ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
SECOND INTERNATIONAL SALON
This Salon is scheduled to be held in Adelaide at the Royal South Australian Society of Arts Gallery from 3rd to 17th August. An increase over last year’s entries was recorded and a survey of the 203 prints accepted for hanging leaves no doubt that the Adelaide International is firmly established.

An encouraging point is to be found in the fact that the Australian group, although less in numbers than 1945, represent a decided overall improvement in quality. Many new names will be seen in the catalog, but the bulk of entrants to the First International, both Australian and Overseas, again sent work to this year’s Salon, indicating support of the Adelaide Camera Club’s objective of establishing a Salon in which it represents an honor to have a print hung.

The increase in quality is probably more noticeable in South Australian work than any other section. The Adelaide Camera Club in 1945 took some heavy punishment at their own Salon, where only 8 prints were hung out of 58 submitted; the story this year is a much happier one; out of 92 submitted, 27 prints will hang, representing an increase in quality that should give the South Australia morale a push in the right direction.

The method of selection for this Salon did not differ very greatly from that in operation last year; the electrical push-button indication system was discarded, being replaced by a system whereby each selector recorded his vote on his own printed list of titles which corresponded with the prints as they were placed before them. It was found that this method saved a good deal of clerical work and “back-room” distraction as the preparation of the lists and the recording of the votes could be carried out at leisure and when its operation would at least likely to distract the jury’s attention. A system of “master sheets” was also adopted, these sheets bearing the whole history of the Salon and showing the how, when and wherefore of every print submitted. The “master sheets” were started in January when the first package of prints arrived and were entered up progressively as each parcel came to hand, so that by the time the day arrived for the selection, most of the clerical work was done.

This year’s selection was made by three well-known pictorialists, Messrs. Les Fisher and Rupert L. Packer and Lieut. F.A. White ARPS. Mr. John B. Shearer was originally listed as one of the selectors, but was called into the country on urgent business at the last moment and his place was ably taken by Mr. Packer. The selectors adhered strictly to a “the picture means everything — the author’s name nothing” attitude and are responsible for a Salon of an even higher quality than last year. A total of 780 prints was submitted and 15 hours was spent by the Jury in their selection of the 203 that will hang. Of these 203, some 50 prints, representing those receiving three full votes, have been sent to Mr. Harold Cazneaux Hon. FRPS, one of Australia’s most distinguished pictorialists. Mr. Cazneaux has duly awarded Silver and Bronze Plaques and Merit Certificates to outstanding work; his decisions are listed on this page.

In all, 17 countries were represented in the entry list. They are: Australia, America, Brazil, British West Indies, Canada, China, Denmark, England, Holland, India, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, South Africa and Switzerland.

Australia submitted 371 prints and Overseas countries submitted 409 prints, the latter being nearly 200 more than was received for 1945. Of the 203 hangings, Australia supplies 86 and Overseas 117. An analysis of the Australian effort is shown below and should prove interesting.
