ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The highlight of the November activities was the opening of the 15th Annual Exhibition by the Lord Mayor, Mr. Rymill. About 110 prints were hung, quite a few less than usual, but this was compensated for by the general high quality. The entries were hung in their respective sections, such as landscape, portraiture, etc. Plaques and certificates were awarded to the winners in each section.

On the evening of the 17th, following the conclusion of the exhibition, a meeting was held at which the prizewinners told the other members of their techniques and prizewinning ways.

The outing was another all-day trip to Aldinga and Port Willunga. The members of the Adelaide Camera Club joined with those from the Filmo Club and a most successful day was enjoyed.

During the last November meeting, an Ansco Color film was developed by club members Messrs. Mitchell and Grosser. They had no easy task, as the temperature for the day had been 103 deg. During lengthy stages of the process, Mr. Tomlinson projected a selection of Kodachrome transparencies.

Merit Certificates were awarded to:

Some of the best photographers in the world are expected to send prints for an international salon of pictorial photography at the Royal Adelaide Exhibition of 1952. The salon is being arranged by Adelaide Camera Club in conjunction with the SA Chamber of Manufactures. The club president (Mr J.N. Tomlinson) said today only the best work would be accepted. A panel of judges consisting to famous photographers would decide the works to be included. The salon will be in the upstairs foyer of Centennial Hall.

A splendid attendance of members crowded the club rooms on the night of 5th March, to witness the judging of that popular annual event — the special competition for the “G.L. Fisher Memorial” trophy for landscape. In all 15 entries were received. Instead of selecting the winner by popular audience vote, a sole judge was chosen by the committee. Keith P. Phillips, acting in this capacity, declared John Sprod the winner. This member’s entry was a particularly fine high-key study.

In addition to the special contest, the monthly competitions for both “A” Grade and “B” Grade were conducted with 8 entries in “A” and 12 entries in “B”. The critics for the evening were Dr. Enid Robertson and John Sprod. Merit Certificates were awarded:

At the monthly outing on Sunday 11th March, forty members, en masse, invaded the Koala Bear Farm, where Miss Bernice Kopple, of the farm staff, modeled for enthusiasts in a sarong and with an armful of pythons. President Jack Tomlinson built a back ground set of grass mats and palm leaves; altogether the novel experiment was a huge success.

Members then had a picnic lunch on the banks of Torrens Lake before moving down to the speed-boat racing at Snowden’s Beach, on the Port River. They were able to go out in speed-boats for action shots of the racing.

A “technical meeting” was held on Monday 19th March, with the subject “Print Quality and How to Obtain It”, in the capable hands of Mr. John Bennett, who described in detail his methods of producing exhibition prints. General discussion followed and several members described their favorite processes.

A special beginners competition was judged at the general meeting, held on Monday 2nd April. Print sizes were limited to 8x10 and an excellent showing resulted. Mr. D. Giles was declared the winner.

The monthly competitions for “A” and “B” Grades were also conducted, Merit awards:

The month’s outing on 8th April, took the form of a photographic inspection of the Otranto at the Outer Harbour. The club had the freedom of the ship and working with a model, Miss Muriel Smart and at times, the ship’s crew, proved a lively and very interesting afternoon.

On 16th April, “Posing the Figure” was the subject for the evening and the lecture was in the capable hands of artist Miss Barbara Robertson. Mr. Jack Beare handled the lights to produce drama and glamor, while model Bernice Koppel gamely faced the barrage of cameras for both black-and-white and color shots.

The monthly print competition, judged at the meeting held on 7th May, produced seventeen pictures from A Grade and eleven from B Grade members. Merit Certificates were won:

A novel and enjoyable evening was had by all, with the gay scene highlit every so often by the firing of a flashbulb.

The Half-Yearly Social gathering was held on Monday 18th June. An all-time record attendance of one hundred and ten members and friends was made. The first portion of the program took the form of an 8mm movie made by Mr. Garfield Mitchell of the club’s outing to the Koala Farm and Snake Park. Then followed a color film made by Mr. Stain covering his recent trip to England and the Continent. An excellent supper wound up a very enjoyable evening.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The unique outing to the Mile End railway yards and Roundhouse on 14th July was unfortunately spoiled by inclement weather. However, eighteen members went along in the rain and although few shots were taken, some unusual possibilities were seen and a future trip has been planned.

On 16th July, over eighty entries were received for the color slide competition, but only one received a unanimous decision from the three judges. The winner was Mr. Doug. Wolff, with an unusual interior shot of molten metal. Judges were Messrs. Pat Clements, George Dickson and Keith Cook.

A novel electronic judging system was introduced by President Jack Tomlinson. Judges sat amongst members of the audience and operated a push-button set in front of them. Reactions of the judges were seen on a screen in front of the recorder. The system proved highly successful.

The general meeting on 6th August, covered both the monthly competitions and the special “Cover Girl” contest.

Tremendous enthusiasm was shown for the “Cover Girl” contest, and thirty-one entries were received.

The word didn't take long to get round about Adelaide's fourth international photographic salon organized for next year by the Chamber of Manufactures and Adelaide Camera Club. First entries to arrive are from one Joseph Seidel, of Budapest, Hungary behind the Iron Curtain. The salon will be held in Centennial Hall, Wayville, throughout the Royal Adelaide Exhibition.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The club outing on the 9th September was devoted to marine studies and seascapes. Members started to click their shutters at Port Adelaide, where ships of all sizes and shapes were moored and waiting for a “seeing eye” to discover their aesthetic beauties. Lunch was taken at Largs Bay and the outing concluded at the Outer Harbour, where the Royal Yacht Squadron Fleet was at anchor.

“Photographic and Character Make-up” was Mr. F. Gunnall’s subject at the clubroom lecture on 17th September, and those who saw Mr. Doug. Wolff sit down in the “make-up” chair were amazed at the startling transformation brought about by Mr. Gunnall’s skillful application of the make-up. Any resemblance between the Chinese gentleman who sat to be photographed by members and Mr. Wolff was merely coincidental. Lighting arrangements were in the capable hands of Messrs. Doug. Dansie and Eric Spargo.

The “Robertson Trophy” for the best character study and the “Robertson Trophy” for the best picture taken by a “B” Grade member on a club outing were the main items to be contested for at the General Meeting held on the 1st October.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The Adelaide Camera Club history was made on the holiday week-end of 6th to 8th October, when, under the leadership of President Jack Tomlinson, nineteen members spent the week-end shutter-clicking and socializing on the South Coast at Victor Harbour. Fourteen members stayed at a guest house and five accommodated themselves in caravans.

Activities were social on Saturday afternoon and evening, but at 6am on Sunday morning, with the sun just peeping over the horizon and the air crisp, the early risers were given an opportunity to photograph the local fishermen attending to and setting their nets. Long shadows and complete co-operation from the fishermen resulted in some particularly fine shots.

A return was made for breakfast, then onto the beach with three of the local lifesaving beauties as models for “Beach Photography”.

The afternoon was devoted to “Landscapes”, when members worked in the Inman Valley, a delightful gum-tree-studded valley some fifteen miles from the beach.

Monday morning was taken up with “Seascapes” at King’s Beach, a rocky locale ideal for this type of work and in the afternoon, Chiton Beach and Port Elliott were visited and photographed.

Scientific Photography was the subject chosen by Dr. Saltpetre for his lecture on Monday 15th October, and although at times the technicalities were hard to follow, it was a "meaty" lecture and very much appreciated by the members present.

General meeting and print competition were held on Monday 5th November, and Merit Awards were presented:

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
FIRST JUBILEE INTERNATIONAL COLOUR SLIDE EXHIBITION
For this, our first exhibition of its kind to be held in South Australia, we received 230 slides from 58 entrants from Australia, America, England, Canada and Sweden. Of these, 176 were accepted for public screening.

The opinion of the judges was that there existed a lack of originality in the subject matter of the slides, there being too many "pretty picture postcard" type of scenes showing excellent color, but with little thought to obtaining suitable viewpoints which would result in more pleasing compositions.

The judges feel that some of this could, no doubt, be attributed to the small viewfinders as fitted to many 35mm cameras. The best solution is a single lens reflex, but the recently introduced Kodak Retina, frame-type sports finder is extremely good, thanks to a parallax compensation device when working at short distances.

It appears that the best of the Australian exhibits compare very favorably with those received from overseas and the Honor Awards presented for the Australian slides were well deserved.

EXHIBITION OF COLOR PICTURES
Color pictures from the US, England, Sweden, New Zealand and many other countries are among the entries in South Australia's jubilee international color - slide exhibition, which will be given a public showing in the Institute Building, North terrace, on Wednesday night and Wednesday week.

The international exhibition — believed to be the first in Australia — was sponsored by the Adelaide Camera Club. Australian entries, including about 20 from SA, will also be shown, together with a selection of other pictures by camera club members. The exhibition will be free.

CAMERA CLUB EXHIBITION
Landscape studies in the Adelaide Camera Club annual exhibition were "wonderfully representative", particularly to someone who did not know Australia, the US Vice-Consul (Mr J.F. O'Grady) said last night in opening the exhibition in the Society of Arts Gallery.

A special Jubilee feature of the exhibition will be the screening tomorrow night and the following Wednesday of the first international exhibition of color slides. The exhibition, which comprises more than 100 portrait, figure, landscape and miscellaneous studies, will be open daily from noon to 5pm and from 7pm to 9pm until 14th December.

A new member of the Adelaide Camera Club, Miss Rhonda Buckley is showing six pictures in the club's annual exhibition in the Society of Arts gallery, North terrace.

The exhibition was opened last night by the US Vice-Consul (Mr John Q'Grady).

One of Miss Buckley's pictures, "Here Endeth The First Lesson", which was published in "The News" last Wednesday, won an honor award. "It took me two hours and two dozen exposures to get that photo of the dog dressed as a cleric", she said. Miss Buckley, who has been a darkroom operator with a photographic studio for 11 years, recently won the Ailford Award for the best advertising stunt. She specializes in animal photography and during her five years of serious photography she has taken 500 animal studies, chiefly of dogs and cats. She prefers indoor photography because she thinks it more effective.

Other women exhibitors include Dr. Enid Robertson, Miss Laurel Thomas and Miss Fay Hunter. The exhibition will be open until Friday week.

The first international exhibition of color slides was screened at the Royal SA Society of Arts gallery last night as a special Jubilee feature of the Adelaide Camera Club annual exhibition. There are more than 100 photographic portrait, figure, landscape and studies in the exhibition, which is open daily until 14th December.

Saturday 8th December 1951  Page 45 - The Mail (Adelaide SA)

A creditable display of pictorial photography by members of the Adelaide Camera Club will attract many admirers to the Society of Arts gallery until Friday. Besides many interesting examples of portraiture, character study and landscapes there are two collections of noted camera men, exhibited by invitation. Hugo Keil, ARPS, shows some well-selected landscape compositions of Central Australia and Keith T. Cook's portrait and figure studies are clever and imaginative.

FINE LANDSCAPES
The landscape section is a particularly good feature of the show and the awards of the judges, Messrs. Kell, Cook and Geoff Dickson are well merited. Doug Wolff's "Three (dinghies) of a Kind" is well thought out and handled with skill, as is also "Forest Mists" by E. Robertson ARPS. The same photographer also scored in the portrait honors with "Shipmates" and Maurice Hunter produced an attractive "Cover Girl". Other pictures that capture the attention include "Foam", by D.C. Dansie, "Safe Anchorage", by D.E. Robertson, "White Sails", by Colin West and "Morning Fog", by J. Wood. But each will select his own favorites from among these 107 fine prints.

ENTHUSIASTS can't remember when Adelaide last had a feast of two major photographic exhibitions at the same time. One, the Adelaide Camera Club show, is in the Institute Building, North terrace, the other, an exhibition of colored photos by Noel Habgood of the Kiwis (for parcels to Korea) is in the Curzon Theatre, Laubman and Pank Building, Gawler place. There's a friendly spirit between the two. I've heard patrons at each place telling visitors not to miss the other show before both close on Saturday.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The club outing in November took the form of a pictorial picnic to the hills near the Mt. Bold Reservoir. A nearby farm provided a rural backdrop for many and varied farmyard scenes. Local models were most co-operative and enjoyed the activities as much as the members.

A “Color Night” was held at the clubrooms on Monday 19th November. A color slide competition drew sixty-seven entries and awards to the following:

The judges were Miss Robertson, Mr. E. Robertson and Dr. R.J. Best.

Dr. R.J. Best projected a series of color slides and commented on his recent world trip, much to members enjoyment.

The winning color slides in the Adelaide Camera Club International Color Salon were also screened as a preview for members. The night was an outstanding success and was greatly enjoyed by the eighty members and friends present.

Monday 3rd December, saw the opening of the Club’s Sixteenth Annual Exhibition of Pictorial Photography and First International Color Salon in the Royal South Australian Society of Arts Gallery on North Terrace. The show was officially opened by Mr. John O’Grady, the American Vice-Consul. It was estimated that three hundred people attended the opening. The exhibition was well received by the press.

The judges of the Exhibition were Messrs. Hugo Keil ARPS, Geoff. Dickson and Keith T. Cook.

The judges for the Color Salon were Messrs. Jack Tomlinson, E. Newsham and Doug. Wolff.

The Royal Adelaide Exhibition will have the finest World Salon of photography ever seen in Australia. In all, 807 entries came from 29 countries. The largest number of countries represented in Australia at any previous salon was 15. "Very, very high" is the standard of the photographs selected, according to one of the judges and the president of the Adelaide Camera Club (Mr Tomlinson) says that it is the finest collection of overseas prints ever brought to Australia.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The outstanding event for January was a club outing at Langhorne’s Creek, approximately fifty miles from Adelaide. Ten cars carrying fifty members and friends made the trip, at the invitation of club member Mr. C.V. Potts. The weather was perfect, although one club member complained to the host that he had placed the clouds in the wrong position. New Australian models in national costumes posed in the vineyard of Mr. Pott’s winery and Miss Stella Coles modeled for glamor pictures in a number of dresses. Photographing near a swamp many wild duck were shot, with cameras.

The first print competition for the new year was held at the club rooms on Monday 3rd February, with merit awards going to:

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The all-day outing planned for the Adelaide Camera Club on the 9th February at Sellick’s Beach, was spoiled by wet weather and a further outing has been scheduled for this popular spot.

The mid-monthly meeting on the 18th February was one for the color enthusiast and in addition to the talk given on “Color Composition” by artist Mr. Ivor Francis, a color slide competition was held. There was a good line-up of entries, and Merit Awards were awarded to:

Members were asked to assist in the hanging of the International Salon at the Centennial Hall, Wayville, on Saturday 1st March. It was an all-day task and enough helpers turned out to make the work go smoothly. In addition to hanging the Salon, prints for the Royal Adelaide Exhibition were hung in another hall in the grounds on the same day.

Monday 3rd March, saw the monthly general meeting and print competition. Mr. Ainslie Roberts, one of the Salon judges, was the sole critic for the evening and members benefited greatly from his helpful and constructive "words of wisdom". Fifty five members and friends were present and Merit Awards were awarded to:

The Society was formed by Mr M.R. Pocock when he was living in Mount Gambier several years ago. The winning entry consisted of prints by Messrs. J. Adamson, of Portland, (Aarum Lilies), S. Cowell, Melbourne, (Sunlight on the River), L.J. Dundon, Mount Gambier, (Sun on the Sand), L. Puckridge, West Coast, (Swirling Waters), M.R. Pocock, Adelaide, (The Bow) and R. Seaman, Adelaide, (Homeward Bound). Each will receive a silver medal and a certificate will be presented to the Club. Warrnambool Camera Club was awarded second prize. Other competitors were Adelaide Camera Club and Hobart Camera Club. Other members of the Society who were awarded silver medals were J. Noyce, West Coast, for a landscape and K. Baker, Murray Bridge, for a still life.

HIGH AWARD FOR PHOTO
The work of a Goulburn photographer has been accepted for exhibition in the Adelaide International Salon of Pictorial Photography at the Royal Adelaide Exhibition of 1952.

The photographer, Mr Reginald Warlow, of Auburn Street, was one of the four N.S.W. exhibitors who had their work accepted for the exhibition from hundreds of applicants.

Mr Warlow's entry was a portrait, which he called "Stephen", of a bearded man, which was displayed for several weeks in the window of Mr Warlow's Auburn Street studio.

This portrait was entered in competition with countless entries from all over the world, including those from photographic societies in Canada and the U.S.A. and was selected for exhibition along with the work of 21 other Australian exhibitors.

Most of 195 entries already judged came from overseas exhibitors. The top awards of the exhibition were given mostly to American exhibitors.

President of the Adelaide Camera Club, Mr J. Tomlinson, said that, to the best of his knowledge, some of the prints were the best yet seen in Australia.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
Forty members and friends spent a glorious autumn day at Sellick’s Beach on 9th March. Although it was essentially a camera outing, swimming was high on the agenda. A picnic lunch added to the sociability, and “Pop” Berrans played host at his cobblestone castle. Model Stella Coles again provided glamor for the enthusiasts and two small boys played enthusiastically for the cameras.

A technical evening was held on 17th March, when sixty members heard Dr. Ramsay delivering a lecture on “Photographic Optics”.

On 29th March, an “unofficial” outing was held at Golden Grove and a camera group worked amongst hay tossing and hay carting operations. Although the weather was not ideal, the subject matter proved so interesting and photogenic that some valuable pictorial work should result.

The largest number of prints ever submitted for competition at a monthly meeting was hung at the general meeting for April. Competitions were for the “G.L. Fisher Memorial Landscape Trophy”, a special competition for members who had never won a trophy and the usual “A” Grade and “B” Grade aggregate. Winners were:

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The Club outing was held on April 20th at the famous Barossa Valley, home of the wine making industry in South Australia, an undulating land of vineyards and glorious gum trees. Al fresco lunch was a feature and over sixty members and friends in twenty-two cars, covered one hundred miles in the round trip.

“Gadget Night”, held on the 21st April, attracted a good attendance of members and gadgets. Ideas as simple as "how to pour water from a bottle in a hurry", to "complicated electronic timers" were exchanged. Club member George Zeising photographed the audience during his short demonstration, without members being aware of the fact, until it was all over. Dudley Dansie, with an impressive looking box covered with a fearsome array of dials, switches and flashing lights showed "how to make a print" and he demonstrated also a "lost film or paper detector".

Eric Spargo came along with a "puddin basin" enlarger that was a credit to him and probably (if they could see it) the envy of the commercial enlarger manufacturers. New member D. Ristich demonstrated an ingenious electronic timer. It was a grand evening and most members went home feeling that they had learnt something.

Members were invited to attend a "critical" session at the Fourth International Salon on May 2nd evening, at the Centennial Hall, Wayville. Twenty five members came along and studied, criticized and praised the overseas workers photographs.

The "spinal cord" of the Club — those members who volunteer to work when there is work to be done — rallied round on Sunday 4th May at the Centennial Hall and dismantled the Salon, collated the prints and during the week packed them up ready for despatch to the owners overseas.

Competition night at the clubrooms, held on Monday 5th May, attracted seventy-five members and the full house voted the following members Merit Awards:

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The club outing for May was an afternoon and evening event. Members visited Mr. Cedric Warren’s residence at Stirling, and during the afternoon sought out the glorious autumn tints which abound in this district. A giant barbecue was planned for the evening, but unfortunately the weather broke, and many members returned to the city. Those who stayed on, however, enjoyed the delights of outdoor cooking on Mr. Warren’s barbecue. Succulent chops, sausages, and slabs of steak, with toasted crumpets kept the conversation to a minimum.

An elaborately prepared lecture on “Posing the Figure” was presented to a capacity house on May 19th by Miss Barbara Robertson. After showing poses by epidiascope, Miss Robertson directed model Stella Coles who demonstrated how poses were achieved. Members will later have an opportunity of putting their acquired knowledge into practice at a city studio.

General Meeting on June 2nd and an excellent roll-up of members despite the rigors of a winter’s night. The usual competitions were won by:

A GRADE; Mr. George Ziesing.
B GRADE: Mr. Dudley Dansie.

The K.P. Phillips Trophy was contested for and won by Mr. Doug Wolff, with “Three of a Kind”.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
Our June outing was an “inning” owing to the wintry conditions prevailing and fifty members and the "Duke Trio" of acrobats, spent a crowded afternoon in a city studio, which was made available to the Club.

Some interesting shots were made, but those unfortunate enough to be at the back of the crowd, had to wait until the following club night — when pictures of the “inning” were handed around — to know just what really did go on!

One hundred and five members and friends attended the "HALF-YEARLY" Social on June 16. As a change from still photography, a program of 16mm sound films was shown. Mr. Reg. Shorthouse kindly loaned the Club his projector and acted as operator for the evening. Films included an American documentary on Edward Weston the photographer.

Competition Night, held on July 7, included a special “Humorous Study” competition which succeeded in drawing seventy-five members away from their firesides. Mr. John Sprod carried off the £l/1/- prize for the best “Humorous Study” with a shot taken at a club meeting. Winner in A Grade was John Sprod, and in B Grade, Dudley Dansie. Mr. John Stanier acted as critic for the evening. Having a critic from outside the Club, has proved a great success and has injected many members with enthusiasm and the desire to "get out there clicking".

Mr. Doug. Wolff displays his print, “Three of a Kind", which gained the “K.P. Phillips Trophy”.

Twenty two members paid a visit to the News and Mail headquarters on July 12, to see the week-end newspaper "The Mail" being published and they watched and photographed the production of the newspaper from the editorial department to the giant presses. Although not completely photographic the outing was intensely interesting and everyone voted it as highly successful.

Color night was held on July 21, and one hundred and three color slides were submitted for competition. The judges were Messrs. I. Monfries, D. McDonald and K.T. Cook. Only one slide, entered by M. Hunter rated a unanimous vote from the judges and this was given top honors. Eighty-five members were present. Color nights are proving consistently popular and this year it has been proposed that there be a Color Section in the annual exhibition to be held in October.

An extra Almond Blossom Outing was included in this month’s program by special request of members and twenty-five enthusiasts went to Tea-tree Gully on July 26, and photographed South Australia’s famous almond blossom at its best.

Competition night and the General Meeting took place on August 4. Sixty-five members and friends attended and eighteen pictures were submitted for competition. An excellent criticism was given by Messrs G. Zeising and D. Dansie.

Something different was offered members for the August outing in the form of a visit to St. Peter’s Cathedral, North Adelaide. Features of the cathedral are its stained glass windows and magnificent carvings. There was material for color as well as monochrome.

A practical demonstration of modern lighting in portraiture was given on August 18, to sixty members by Messrs. Zeising and Dansie. Members brought their cameras and all had an opportunity of photographing model Helen Williams in any pose they cared to nominate.

The general meeting was held on September 1, and the conduct of club business was followed by the Monthly Print Competition and criticism; also a special competition to discover the Best Outdoor Night Photograph. This was won by Maurice Hunter with “Light’s Vision”, a fine study of Adelaide at night with the statue of Colonel Light silhouetted in the foreground.

Motion, pictures in color taken from a rocket in flight with "stills" from its maximum height of 70 miles were features of a film screened at the Liberal Hall last night for advanced amateurs and their friends, the guests of Kodak Ltd. Another sequence showed a day's happenings of the sky from sunrise to sunset, all compressed into 21 minutes. Chairman for the evening was Mr Keast Burke, of Sydney, who had come over as co-judge for the Adelaide Camera Club 17th annual exhibition which will open at the Institute Building on October 27. Mr Burke also screened color transparencies from all over the world. Australia was represented by a group depicting the lives of the tribesmen of the New Guinea Highlands. This series, "Colorful Nonlugl" was the work of Sydney color photographer Clarence B. Young.

CAMERA ART
Every year, photographs by the Adelaide Camera Club encourage us to keep our cameras clicking. At the club's seventeenth annual exhibition most exhibitors have solved the endless difficulties of making a picture from a photograph. In portraiture, visitors can enjoy the simple photographic statement of "Jill"; in landscape, "Green Bay Beach" and "Sunshine and Shadow" (No. 43) are a delight in the decorative scene. But for the purest work of photographer's art look at a flower piece (No. 90) - a photograph and a photographer with a fresh vision.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
Fashion photography was the main theme for the spring outing on September 7, and thirty members and friends with four models were invited to Mr. Dudley Turner’s property near Crafens. Mr. Turner’s gardens offered many fine backgrounds and opportunities for this type of work and the enthusiasts and models were kept busy. This was a departure from the usual outing and it was hailed as a great success.

An attentive audience heard Mr. Max Grosser describe and discuss the chemistry of photography on September 15. The technical subject was handled in everyday language and members found it easy to follow and were grateful to Mr. Grosser for his help.

We were delighted and honored to have Mr. Keast Burke ARPS, APSA, Editor of The A.P.-R. with us at the General Meeting and he kindly consented to act as critic for the evening; he also acted as judge for the Robertson Special Trophy for Portraiture and Character Study. Mr. Burke’s critical analysis and suggestions were eagerly received by members, who said after the meeting that they had received a great deal of help along the right track.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
A photographic exhibition of excellence will be presented at the Technical College Annexe tonight by the Broken Hill Photographic Society, of which Mr J. Parry is Hon.Secretary. The exhibition has been loaned for the occasion by the Adelaide Camera Club and it is of interest that most of the prints and finished photographs, of which there are more than 60, were in the Adelaide Camera Club 1952 exhibition. The prize winners of that exhibition will be on view tonight. Mr Dudley Dansie, a former local resident, who is a prominent member of the Adelaide Camera Club, arranged the exhibition for the local body. Also tonight there will be staged a continuous demonstration of Kodachrome transparencies and 16 mm Kodachrome films. The exhibition, which is for tonight only, will be open from 6pm till 10pm. Besides prints, there will be a considerable amount of equipment, the property of local enthusiasts, on view. The Society hopes to make such exhibitions as this a regular feature of its activities.

An exhibition of photographs made available by the Adelaide Camera Club to the local Camera Club was displayed at the Technical College annexe last night. More than 300 people inspected the photographs some of which were displayed in the main Adelaide Camera Club exhibition, including a premier award winner. A demonstration of equipment and antique cameras also proved popular. A continuous demonstration of colored films in a lighted room was tried for the first time in Broken Hill and proved successful. The club intends holding similar demonstrations in the future.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION INCLUDES FINE WORK
HIGH STANDARD SHOWN IN AMATEUR STUDIES

Some striking prints were included in the exhibition of photographic art at the Technical College annexe last night, and the work shown should provide a stimulus to amateurs to show what they are capable of.

The exhibition, which was presented by the Broken Hill Photographic Club, consisted of prints shown in the Adelaide Camera Club exhibition recently.

The wide variety of subjects presented, and the high percentage of everyday topics highlighted through unusual approaches made the exhibition one of intense interest, not only to enthusiasts, but to the layman who, perhaps uses his camera for holiday snapshots.

For instance one exhibitor chose as his subject a few ordinary lemons. He grouped them, produced a fine enlargement, and called it "Three of a Kind".

Another photographer illuminated the petals of two flowers with cunningly placed back-lighting, while yet another selected a vase of sunflowers.

Ingenuity enabled some artists to turn out delightful studies with the use of small ornaments.

One carefully produced print, "Tension", was the result of carefully arranging two small glass animals, a cat and a dog, softly back-lighted and looking quite animated.

Portraits included a number of children, mainly by D.G. Dansie, who used to belong to the local club. Another of his studies, "Grain", produced in fine detail the graining on old timber projecting from drift sand.

Among the unusual effects ranking high in the Judges awards, were two prints which, from a moderate distance, resembled delicate pencil or charcoal work.

They were, respectively, a study of trees and a portrait; both so carefully under-printed that the effect was almost ethereal.

"Nonconformist" showed a vast stack of wire coils, with one solitary coil departing from the general theme.

An example of painstaking technique was "Light's Vision", portraying Colonel Light's statute in silhouette as it overlooked the city he had planned.

In addition to the exhibited photographs, the club last night exhibited old and new equipment, including still and movie cameras, a titling outfit for movies, and other miscellaneous gadgets.

Transparencies and movies were shown in the hall, and the public free to view with most of the lights on, the studies or the projected films as they chose.

This was accomplished by shielding the screen from the bright sidelights which may have reduced the contrast of the image.

The Club hopes in the future to present a similar display of members photographs of equally high standard, and announces that new members are always welcome. Activities of the club cover all phases of amateur photography. Regular field days are held, and the club meets every Tuesday evening at the Aero Club for discussions, practical demonstrations and projection evenings.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The popular annual three-day location outing took place on 11th to 15th October, at Yankilla, a delightful country center about fifty miles south of Adelaide. Models, both local and imported from the city, were available and members made full use of the opportunities offered to make some pictures that were “different”.

A very successful barbecue, enlivened by fireworks, was held on the nearby Normanville beach on Saturday evening. The high spot of Sunday was a trip through the beautiful Inman Valley and some color shots were made. Monday morning was dull, with drizzling rain and although a run was made to Second Valley, very little was achieved photographically.

Lunch at the guest house officially wound up the week-end and members gradually dispersed during the afternoon in the direction of the city.

A special night was given by the “trade” on 20th October, when all the latest in equipment and new methods was demonstrated. Mr. J. Mack demonstrated new 35mm and twin lens cameras and gadgets which had members “watering at the mouth” and Messrs. H. Richardson and F. White, of Kodak Ltd., gave a practical demonstration of the Flexichrome Process. It proved a very successful evening.

The Seventeenth Annual Exhibition of Pictorial Photography and Color Slides was opened by Mr. Norbert Griffen (Consular Representative for France) on 27th October, in the presence of 300 people. The exhibition proved a great success and was well attended during the two weeks it was open. The Wednesday evenings were devoted to a showing of color slides, and both occasions resulted in the “Full House” sign being displayed.

General Meeting and Monthly Competition were held on 3rd November.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The club outing to Second Valley on 9th November was postponed and finally abandoned, owing to the rain. Color Night on 17th November, attracted a record attendance of over 100 members and friends. There is no doubt that color has gripped enthusiasts and onlookers alike. One hundred and twenty slides were screened and the judges, Messrs. T. Watson, R. Swan, and J.L. Austin, were kept on their toes to select the winners. Outright winner was J. Windle and six other competitors were awarded Merit Certificates.

The year of 1952 drew to a close, at least for the outgoing committee, on 1st December. Elections for officers and the final monthly print competition for the year were conducted on this busy evening, which was attended by more than sixty members.

Officers and committee for 1953 were elected as follows: President, Mr. D. Dansie; Vice-President, Mr. G. Zeising; Secretary, Mr. M.A. Gibson; Treasurer, Mr. J. Windle; Committee, Mrs. V. Cook, Miss R. Buckley, Messrs. J. Bennett, I. Monfries, and E. Spargo.

At the close of the elections a vote of thanks was passed to retiring President, J. Tomlinson, who has held the office for two years. Jack has done a splendid job for the Adelaide Camera Club his cheery good nature and untiring efforts are reflected in the fact that our club has never been stronger, both socially and in membership, than at the present.

The December print competition resulted in awards being made to:

The meeting of 15th December, was devoted to a Christmas party and as is usual for such functions, a capacity house was present. Over one hundred members and friends saw the major awards for the year presented. Our new president, D. Dansie, then declared the party “on” and the assembly was entertained by movie films, competitions and a very tasty supper prepared by the ladies. Of course, a grand time was had by all.

During December we believe an innovation was made in Australian photographic circles by members of our club in conjunction with the newly-formed Naracoorte Camera Club. A collection of prints was forwarded to Adelaide by the latter and these were analyzed and the opinions recorded on to a tape recorder. Both the prints and the tape were returned to Naracoorte. We believe this idea could have many benefits to Australian photographic societies.

May we of the Adelaide Camera Club take this opportunity to wish readers of the A.P.-R. and all photographers in general a happy and photographic New Year and extend to you the invitation to visit us when in South Australia.

The next meeting of the above Club will be held at the "Golden Gate" cafe at 8pm on Tuesday 10th February. There will be on exhibition a collection of prints from the Adelaide Camera Club, while the main part of the program will be given over to Mr B.C. Jellett, who will screen some of his 16mm color movies. As Mr Jellett is widely traveled, an interesting evening is assured and all members should make a special effort to attend.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The year 1953 opened in the form of an outing to Sellick’s Beach, which is about thirty-two miles south of Adelaide. The weather was co-operative and approximately twenty-four members, several children and last but not least, two charming models made the trip. During the day Mr. Behrens beach house was at the disposal of members, who appreciated his hospitality.

The meeting on January 19th, opened with general business and continued with the first print competition of the year. The mentor critic was Mr. G. Ziesing and acting critics Messrs. R.V. Leunig and M.A. Gibson. Awards were made to:

This will give us an extra two meetings a year and headquarters will be more centrally situated for the club’s activities.

Monday 30th March 1953  Page 7 - The Narracoorte Herald (SA)

At the annual meeting of the Naracoorte Camera Club held recently Mr R. Sims was elected President, Mr B.C. Jellett Vice-President and Mr T. Rowe Hon.Secretary. This year's program is a much more active one than the initial program and it is hoped members will make full use of the helpful evenings arranged for developing, printing, enlarging and mounting their own prints. The first of these evenings is to be held at the next meeting of the Camera Club on April 14th at the "Golden Gate" Cafe, when members are asked to bring one of their own exposed negatives which they will develop for themselves during the evening. An interesting range of subjects for the photographic competitions has also been arranged. The competition for next meeting is for A grade and is entitled "Still Life". At the last meeting it was decided to give an exhibition of prints both from the local Club and from the Adelaide Camera Club at the H. and F. Society's chrysanthemum show in May.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
An interesting and informative lecture by Mr. F. White ARPS, on the subject of sensitized materials was heard by approximately fifty members on the occasion of February 17, meeting. Mr. White presented his lecture in simple and non-technical terms, included both slides and a motion picture to illustrate points in his talk and at the conclusion touched briefly on the pros and cons of warm-toned development on chloro-bromide papers.
The February outing was held at Aldinga Beach with about thirty members and friends in attendance. The weather, doubtful in the morning, cleared in the afternoon and a pleasant day was had by all.

Competition highlight on March 3, was the excellent showing by "B" Grade, sixteen of the twenty-one prints exhibited being by "B" Grade members. The quality in every case was excellent, a grand pointer for the future and perhaps a direct result of the President’s appeal a short time ago for more active participation by members. On 17th March a good roll up of members was present to hear an interesting and informative address by Mr Andrews, who spoke on Color for Reproduction. Mr Andrews illustrated his lecture with colored filters inserted before projected Kodachromes, together with actual four-color reproductions. The Color competition also held on this evening resulted in the following awards:

The judges were Messrs Monfries, Cook and Wolff.

We were delighted and honored to hear that South Australia's new Governor, Sir Robert George, has agreed to accept the position of Patron of our Club. His Excellency showed great interest in the Club's activities and we hope that his stay in this State will be as long and as happy as that of his predecessor, Sir Willoughby Norrie.

Like the proverbial "bird of passage", the Adelaide Camera Club has again moved to new premises - the YMCA building in Grenfell Street. Our new location should prove very adequate for the Club's activities and we look forward to a long and successful association here. With this move we also revert to our original meeting dates, the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month.

Owing to the Easter holiday our April print competition was held on the 30th March. Twenty-four prints were exhibited. Merit certificates were awarded to:

CAMERA CLUB CONTEST
The Broken Hill Camera Club will announce the winners of its photo competition at a public display of the entries in the Y.M.C.A. next Tuesday night.

A spokesman said that the winner of both the black and white section and the color transparency sections would be announced.

In the black and white section 10 contestants submitted 115 entries, which range from Broken Hill scenes to English and European scenes, commercial, child and nature study shots. This section is at present being judged by a panel of local experts.

In the color transparency section nine exhibitors submitted 45 entries. The entries had been sent to Adelaide for judging by officials of the Adelaide Camera Club.

On Tuesday entries in the black and white competition will be displayed and color competition entries will be projected for the public. The winning entries in the black and white section will later be displayed at a photography store.

CAMERA CLUB EXHIBITION
The Camera Club will hold an exhibition at the YMCA tonight, commencing at 7.30pm, of entries in its recent contest.

There are 45 black and white entries and 115 color transparencies. The latter were sent for judging to the Adelaide Camera Club, of which a former local, Mr D. Dansie, is Hon.Secretary. Results of both sections will be announced tonight during the exhibition and screening. There will also be a screening of selected slides.

Later the black and whites will be shown at Jone's Photo Store, which sponsored this section. Mr J. Wicks sponsored the color section.

Tonight's exhibition will be officially opened at 8pm by the club's president.

CAMERA CLUB PRIZEWINNERS
The Camera Club's exhibition of black and white photographs and color transparencies at the Y.M.C.A. on Tuesday night attracted a considerable amount of public interest, and very soon after the doors opened at 7.30pm all the seating accommodation was packed out and late-comers found there was "standing room only".

In the official opening at 8pm, Club President, Mr. R. Millsom, announced the winners of both the black and white and color transparency competitions. In the black and white section, the three winners:

BLACK AND WHITE SECTION:

FIRST
W. Marsh (portrait)
SECOND
R. Peterson (seascape)
THIRD
R. Barnes (industrial shot)

The fact that the judges had difficulty in selecting winners from the 45 entries submitted, was shown by their eight Highly Commended awards, and a number of others which were commended. Judges were Miss Harding, of the Technical College Art Department, Mrs. E. Erricks, and Mr. Ralph O'Connor, sponsor of the competition, and donor of the prize money.

Invited to speak at the opening, Mr. O'Connor expressed his pleasure at the high standard achieved, and spontaneously offered to increase the prize money. The competition entries were collected after the exhibition and one to be displayed at Jones Photo Store.

There were 115 entries in the color transparency section of the competition, which was judged by the Adelaide Camera Club. This contest, which was sponsored by F.A. Wicks and Company was divided into two sections - one for shots taken in Broken Hill, and the other for shots taken in other places.

First prize in the first section went to L. Power and he also carried off third prize. Second place was gained by Gordon Campbell. In the second section, Club president, R. Millsom, was awarded first prize:

There was also a number of Highly Commended entries.

The Adelaide judges comments on the work from the Broken Hill Club praised the high standard reached in all sections. They said that a number of the transparencies submitted were technically perfect, but were lacking in composition. Most of the black and white entries will be displayed during the Y.M.C.A. hobby week in July. Winning prints will be shown this week in Jones Photo Store, Argent St.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
A visitor from Hollywood, U.S.A., Miss Gwen Jones, was our lecturer on the occasion of the April 20, meeting. Miss Jones subject was "Make-up for Photography" and almost eighty members and visitors were introduced to the mysteries of the subject. Although the audience was predominately male, we were all deeply interested when Miss Jones, using herself as a model, wrought amazing alterations in her appearance and after the demonstration answered the many queries by members about all phases of photography and T.V. in America.

The general meeting and print competition of May 4, once again saw a very good attendance of members. The President announced the first of several special meetings devoted entirely to color screenings, additional to our normal syllabus. This should satisfy the large number of color enthusiasts in our club, who have felt that this branch of photography warrants greater time than is at present available.

Another good roll-up of prints was on display to be voted for and criticized and the largest number of Merit Certificates to be awarded in one evening (nine in all) were allotted to:

CAMERA CLUB CONTEST
Color slides, which were entered in the recent camera competition, will be screened in the foyer of an Argent Street shop on Saturday night. The entries were judged in Adelaide by the Adelaide Camera Club. The 115 slides, together with the judges comments, have been returned and all will be screened on Saturday between 7.30pm and 7.55pm. Commenting on the entries, the judges said that technically the slides were of a high standard, but most were lacking in composition.

Saturday 6th June 1953  Page 6 - Barrier Daily Truth (Broken Hill, NSW)

CAMERA CLUB COLOR SNAPS
Following a recent contest for color transparency and black and white snaps, the local Camera Club has now received back from Adelaide the color transparencies which were judged by the Adelaide Camera Club.

As these were not available for display to the public when the black and white films were exhibited, Mr Jack Wicks, who sponsored the color section of the competition, has given the Club permission to screen the transparencies in the foyer of his Argent Street store between 7.30 and 8pm on Saturday evening.

This generous offer will enable members of the pubic to see the many lovely slides entered in the contest. As there were 115 entries, It is anticipated that it will be possible to run through them twice in the time available. During the showing a commentary on the shots will be given, based on the comments made by the Adelaide judges, who have said that the greater percentage of the entries were technically perfect but lacking in composition and artistry.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
On the evening of 19th May, a series of demonstrations was presented in a somewhat different manner, four demonstrations taking place simultaneously. The subjects of Oil Reinforcement, Spotting, Reduction and Dry Mounting were capably presented by Messrs. G. Zeising, J. Bennett, I. Monfries and G. Dickson respectively and the large number of members present were able to watch whichever course of instruction they preferred.

Our monthly outing for May was an excursion to the Adelaide Hills in search of Autumn Subjects.

Members of our club who are interested in color photography have formed a color group which will meet monthly and their first meeting was held on May 25th, with an attendance of approximately thirty. A sub-committee was formed to direct the activities of this group under the leadership of Mr. J. Tomlinson.

The general meeting on 1st June, was again well attended and brought forth a very impressive array of prints for the monthly competitions and also for the annual competition for the Fisher Memorial Trophy for Landscape. Our guest critic for this evening was Mr. Anton Tulla, a prominent Adelaide photographer, who also delivered, at the conclusion of his print analysis, an extremely interesting and informative address on the method of judging and producing pictorial prints. Results of the competitions were:

Although the advent of cold, wet nights probably tempted many to stay at home before the fireside, an exceptionally large attendance greeted the color slide competition on the evening of June 15. Under the revised color competition rules, each competitor is limited to two slides, which provision improves the technical standard of entries and facilitates judging. Our invitation panel of judges consisted of Mr. G. Mitchell, life member of our club and keen color photographer; Mr. M. Rugless, who has had considerable experience in the making of color prints and Mr. I. Badger, who is interested in both still and movie color work. The judges decision resulted in awards being made to Messrs. Gadd, J. Windle and Burge. The color group meanwhile continues to hold its popular meetings on the last Monday of each month.

Our monthly 'innings' was divided into two groups on successive week-ends, the subject being ballet photography. On 23rd June, Messrs. G. Zeising and J. Windle convened a special 'bring camera' evening, where a large number of members tried their skill at character study.

The July general meeting and print competition on 6th had the usual excellent attendance and we were glad to welcome as our critic for the evening Mr. J. Mack, prominent Adelaide photographic identity. Awards for the evening were:

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
During July our Club had two organized outings, the first being held on the 11th, at the Mile End Railway Yards and the other, a week later, aboard a ship at Port Adelaide. Both functions were well attended and some excellent prints and color transparencies resulted.

On 20th July, we departed from our usual procedure in that we met at the University Lecture Room, to see a demonstration in enlarging technique by Mr. George Scarrett carried out under actual darkroom conditions. This evening should be of great benefit, particularly to the many new members who predominated in the audience. It is very pleasing to note the large increase in attendance at both meetings and outings as compared with a year or so ago.

The general meeting and print competition were held on 3rd August, and during the print analysis an innovation was tried by inviting the author of the print concerned to participate in the discussion. This gave members an opportunity to understand more fully the reasons behind the production of the picture and also to inquire on any technical details of interest. Critics for the evening were Messrs. M. Gibson and R. Leunig, and merit certificates were awarded to:

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
With the coming of spring sunshine, members of the Adelaide Camera Club are looking to the outstanding events of the year’s activities — our yearly exhibition which opens on 26th October, and the holiday week-end, 10th to 12th October, which will take place this year at Victor Harbour. If prints exhibited this year in our monthly competitions are any criterion, our exhibition will be a great success and of course the holiday week-end is always memorable to those of us fortunate to attend.

Our program for the evening of 17th August, took the form of two lectures on the subject of “Flash Photography”. Mr. M.A. Gibson took as his theme the technical aspect of flash materials, while Mr. D.G. Dansie spoke on the practical side, touching upon necessary development modifications, exposure data and other essentials. As both expendable and electronic flash are being used increasingly, members gleaned many useful tips.

Outings for August were, firstly, a trip to the Zoo, where, in spite of cold and wet conditions, many of the animals co-operated in providing subjects for pictures. The second outing, organized by the Color Group, took the form of a “Cherry Blossom Tour”.

The print competition and general meeting of 7th September, was also the occasion of the Robertson Trophy for A and B Grade competitors.

Tuesday 27th October 1953  Page 2 - News (Adelaide, SA)

What makes it possible for a photographer to produce an attractive picture of a seagull standing on the broad back of a swan when the same subject would look absolutely ridiculous if painted by an artist? An interesting feature of the Adelaide Camera Club annual exhibition in the Institute Lecture Room is the grouping together of animal studies. In every case the photographer has achieved a truly sentimental character study in which extreme ingenuity must have been called for. Photographic exhibitions are difficult to review because of the endless variety of subject-matter and slants, to say nothing of techniques. Altogether it seems an excellent show.

The high standard of work that distinguishes the Adelaide Camera Club is well maintained in its eighteenth annual exhibition in the lecture room of the institute. It will be open until Friday. The awards of Mr J.W. Metcalfe will meet with general approval. I noticed especially E. Robertson's "Sand Dunes", R.V. Leunig's "Marine Study", W. Hobden's untitled portrait and R. Cann's charming study, "After School". But there are many attractive works apart from the awards, whether in land or seascape, still-life, figure studies, portraits, or miscellaneous. A fascinating feature is the color slide, of which there are 83 excellent entries. These were screened at Wednesday night's session and will be screened again on Tuesday at 8pm.

The Color Slide Competition, held on 21st September, was very well attended and an excellent showing of color slides resulted. Awards were made to Mr. J. Windle (1st), with the unusual occurrence of a triple-tie for second place between Messrs. J. Osborn, A. Randall and R. Wood. At the conclusion of the competition members saw a screening of transparencies of general interest during which exposure, composition and other points of interest to the color worker were discussed.

Entries for the 18th Annual Exhibition held by our Club closed on 21st September, and our sole judge was Mr. J. Metcalfe of Sydney. Awards made in the various sections were:

During Mr. Metcalfe’s stay in Adelaide a reception was given by Mr. and Mrs. R. Cann at their home. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Metcalfe, Mr. Melchior of Melbourne, Mr. J. Mack and members of the Club Committee. As can be judged from the accompanying illustration those present enjoyed themselves immensely and our thanks go to our host and hostess for their hospitality. During the evening, Mr. Metcalfe spoke of great names in Australian photographic circles, including the late Dr. Julian Smith and his reminiscences caused considerable interest.

The outing scheduled for 4th October, took place in spite of rain and wind; the locale was Uraidla and district in the Mount Lofty ranges. Members fortunately had the use of a hall for their mid-day meal and as the downpour still persisted staged an impromptu concert.

At the usual general meeting and print competition on 5th October, the critics for the evening were Messrs. S. Gibbs and G. Windle. Awards gained were all by "B" Grade exhibitors, the following members being successful in obtaining Merit Certificates:

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
One of the most enjoyable and important of our Club’s activities is the annual three-day holiday week-end, which this year took place at Victor Harbour.

About thirty members made the trip, our head quarters being 'Clifton Guest House'. Highlights of this year’s function were: a miniature 'Redex Trial' undertaken by some members on a trip to the Hindmarsh Valley; an excellent showing of a 16mm Kodachrome film taken by a member, Mr. L. Gadd, on a recent trip to New Zealand; a chop picnic held near Encounter Bay. Throughout the entire three days we experienced excellent weather and our thanks must go to our outing organizers, Messrs. L. Rhodes, J. Osborn and H. Stratman for an excellent program.

On October 19th, we heard a lecture given by Mr. F. White ARPS, on the subject of Composition and as we have come to expect from Mr. White, his advice, amply illustrated by slides and prints, was exceptionally interesting and helpful.

Another big night for members was October 26th, when at 8pm, the Annual Exhibition was declared open by Dr. Derek van Abbe, of the Adelaide University. This year, although we did not have as many prints from members as previously, the quality was excellent and we were honored to have two excellent invitation panels from Messrs. John Hearder and Athol Shmith. His Excellency the Governor, Sir Robert George, inspected the exhibition and conveyed to members through our President his congratulations on the display.

Our last print competition for 1953 took place on November 2nd, and after the monthly general business, members viewed and voted for their choice in the twenty-four prints exhibited. Critics for the night were Messrs. M. Hunter and W. Hobden and the awards were:

WHOM CAN YOU TELL IF YOU SEE A FLYING SAUCER?
If I saw - or thought I saw - a flying saucer tonight I would be hard pressed to find an authority willing to take action on my report.

Mr D.M. Scherek, of Kirkcaldy, had this bother early on Saturday morning. He told a reporter he had unsuccessfully rung the Adelaide Observatory, the police, the University and physics Prof. L.G. Huxley to report the unusual bright object, now thought to have been the planet Jupiter. If another flying saucer should appear, someone with access to good astronomical instruments should be available, he said

I tried the Civil Aviation Department. A spokesman said: "We will check all reports of aircraft seen. If we find there was no aircraft in the vicinity we will take no further action. "Would you consider a flying saucer is an aircraft?" I asked. "If a flying saucer should come along, I would most definitely keep my mouth closed", was the reply.

The RAAF was more helpful. The CO of No. 34 Transport Squadron, Wing Commander McCormack, said: "We record such reports on a special form which is forwarded to Air Force headquarters in Melbourne".

Professor Huxley, president of the Adelaide Astronomical Society, said he had got up at 2am on Sunday morning to observe the planet Jupiter, which he thinks was the object seen by Mr Scherek. "But once in a while is enough for me", he said. "I don't want everyone ringing me when they see something strange in the heavens". And that's as far as I got.

However, the Adelaide Camera Club is enthusiastic about one phase of the current spate of flying saucer reports. A spokesman said: "If you see people carrying cameras wherever they go, don't conclude they're tourists. "They'll probably be Adelaide Camera Club members ready for the chance to claim The Mail's £100 prize for the first authentic picture of a flying saucer over South Australia".

NARACOORTE CAMERA CLUB ACTIVITIES
The first meeting of the Naracoorte Camera Club for the New Year will be held at the Golden Gate Cafe on Tuesday evening next. As well as the "A" grade competition, "Land or Seascape", Mr Pallant will be presenting a very interesting series of 16mm movies and it is suggested that everyone make an effort to attend. An extra evening (Wednesday 10th February) will be held at which members will have in attendance Mr Dudley Dansie of the Thelma Duryea Studio, Adelaide. Mr Dansie is one of Adelaide's leading photographers as well as being a very prominent member of the Adelaide Camera Club and he is keenly interested in fostering photography among amateurs. With him will also be Mr Eric Spargo, whose knowledge of photography is well known to us all.

ROYAL TOUR PICTURES CAN WIN PRIZES
Thousands of amateur photographers will want to take pictures of the Queen when she comes to South Australia, for no matter how good pictures taken by professionals may be, they lack that personal "I took it myself" touch.

To foster this sentiment and to help raise the standard of amateur photography, "The Sunday Advertiser" will give £160 prize money, beside reproduction fees, for pictures taken by amateurs of the Queen, or of incidents associated with the Royal visit.

The Judges will be the president of the National Council of Women (Miss Ruth Gibson), the State Director of the Royal Tour (Mr. M.A.F. Pearce), the Director of the National Gallery (Mr. Robert Campbell), the president of the Adelaide Camera Club (Mr. D. Dansie) and the Assistant Editor of "The Advertiser" (Mr. M.R. Lamshed).

Saturday 13th February 1954  Page 2 - The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA)

ODD ANGLE SOUGHT FOR PHOTO PRIZES
The sidelights which professional photographers sometimes miss are what amateurs should look for in taking pictures for 'The Sunday Advertiser' Royal tour photographic competition. This opinion was given last night by the immediate past president of the Adelaide Camera Club (Mr D. Dansie) who will be one of the judges for the competition. Mr Dansie said that although the Judges would be looking for good pictures of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, photographers should not overlook the human and humorous possibilities among the crowds.

A total of £160 in prize money, besides reproduction fees, will be awarded by 'The Sunday Advertiser' for the best pictures taken in the contest, which will have several sections and will be open to all amateur photographers in SA. In the open section, the prizes will be £50 first; £25 second; and £15 third. In the sections for boys and girls under 16 on March 31st, the prizes will be £10, £7/10/- and £5.

Country photographers will have extra opportunities of winning prizes with Royal tour pictures taken at Mt. Gambier, Broken Hill, Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Renmark.

The first outing for this year was held on Sunday, January 10, when members went to Angaston on a picture hunting expedition backed by beautiful weather and armed with two lovely models. It was announced at the following meeting that a new and novel competition would be held each month on the same night as the regular monthly Print Competitions, for the best A Grade and B Grade pictures taken on the club outing of the previous month. Other changes this year include a Color Slide Competition on the fourth Monday of each month, while the fifth Monday of the month — if there is one — will be a Practical Night, to which members will be asked to bring their cameras.

He returned to Sydney via Mt. Gambier, Ballarat and Melbourne.

PICTURE OF MUSICIANS COMMENDED
Musical circles in Adelaide and admirers of artistic photography, have been impressed by the full page picture of the brother musicians Leon Goossens (oboist) and Eugene Goossens (conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra) which headed the pictorial section of "The Sunday Advertiser" last week-end. It was by Bob Horwood, a staff photographer. A leading member of the Adelaide Camera Club described it as an outstanding piece of work, both in choice and treatment of subject. Pictures chosen for their news value and pictorial quality are featured in the special pictorial section every Saturday and the high reputation established throughout Australia by that section during the Royal Tour is being maintained.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
Our Practical Evening on 17th May, was a lecture on Flash Photography by member Milton A. Gibson, illustrated by excellent lantern slides prepared by Mr. W. Hobden. Mr. Gibson traced the development of this branch of photography from the days when the use of several ounces of flash powder was comparable to deliberate arson up to to-day’s compact electronic units. Constructional methods of the expendable bulb, synchronization and electrical data on electronic units were explained in simple, laymen’s terms and members left the meeting considerably enlightened.

For our regular monthly competition on 7th June, we viewed and voted for fifty-three prints in both grades entered by twenty-two members. This is exceptionally encouraging, bearing in mind the 1954 Exhibition which opens on 18th October. There was also a special competition for the best set of three prints covering the Royal Visit.

Of recent months, we have instituted a novel form of print criticism, which can be best described as “For and Against”. Two critics, drawn from members, are allotted an equal time each; one to comment on the shortcomings of a picture, the other to extol its virtues. Both then combine to discuss improvements. This system has proved very popular and instructive and occasionally amusing, as the critic occasionally forgets which “side” he is on.

Results of the voting for the June competitions showed that eleven members were successful in gaining Merit Certificates.

FREDERIC CHARLES KRICHAUFF
1861 - 25th April 1954

We have only just learned of the passing, at his residence in Portrush Road, Toorak Gardens, Adelaide, at the advanced age of ninety-three, of Frederic Charles Krichauff. Mr. Krichauff, it will be remembered, was the subject of a biographical sketch (by E. Robertson) in our issue of June, 1949. On this occasion he was termed “Australia’s Oldest Amateur” — a title which he well deserved, for his experiences in photography went back to the dawn of the home-made dry plate in the early eighties. When the South Australian Photographic Society was formed in 1883, he became its first Hon.Secretary and four years later his work gained “First Order of Merit” at the Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition. As his biographer pointed out, those were the days when “one’s success depended not only on one’s genius as a photographer, but also on one’s ability to prepare the various materials in the first place.

The outing for June was held at Pt. Noarlunga, and owing to inclement weather we adjourned to the local Institute where we photographed our two models indoors. Thirty members and friends attended.

Our mid-monthly meeting for June was really an excellent one as we had with us Mr. Ainslie Roberts ARPS, APSA, as our guest speaker. Mr. Roberts declared at the outset that he had no intention of giving a lecture but instead preferred his talk to be more of a discussion in which members participated. His subject was Principles of Judging and Print Analysis, which revealed to members the points upon which salons and exhibitions are judged and the attributes which prints require to gain awards. Later in the evening prints brought along by members were analyzed by Mr. Roberts.

As usual, our Color Group met on the 4th Monday of the month and a special competition for the best group of four slides taken during the Royal Visit was held.

The regular monthly print competition was held on 5t July, and there was also a competition for the best prints for both A and B Grade taken on the June outing and the best print taken by artificial light. The awards were:

The meeting on 19th July, took the form of a trade display and a host of gleaming equipment was arrayed before the eyes of members. The only complaint made was that many wondered how they had managed to take pictures with the equipment they already possessed.

We had with us as guest speaker at the July Color Group meeting Mr. Fisher, former President of the Adelaide Camera Club. Mr. Fisher commented upon many of the slides exhibited by members and pointed out that because one is working in color there is no reason to neglect the usual rules of composition as must be applied to monochrome. Too often we see a transparency of glorious color which is sadly lacking in the essentials of first class pictorial work. Meanwhile, the Color Group continues to draw interest; the attendance at this meeting was in the vicinity of 100.

The August monthly competitions were held on the 2nd and another fine attendance resulted. We saw about forty prints in A and B Grades, and also an excellent response to the annual Robertson Trophy Competitions. The critics for the evening were Mr Ian Monfries and Mr. John Sprod. The awards were:

On 16th August, Dr. Aebi told of the many ways modern photography aids the Police Force and how everything from traffic offenders to court documents are recorded by the camera. The evening was very enlightening and a novel change from the usual run of lectures.

The outing for 8th August, was in two parts; in the morning, at the Zoo; in the afternoon, at Port Adelaide, where a launch was provided for the use of members. Many good pictures have resulted from this outing to date and as the weather was fine, no doubt we will see many more.

More than 60 members were present for the August Color Evening where they saw possibly the best show since the color group’s inception. Members gaining certificates were:

Horsham Camera Club members were shown a series of instructive and interesting slides at the annual meeting of the club on Tuesday night. Mr C. Kroker had a composite selection from Kodak in black and white, most of which illustrated the principles of composition. He also showed portfolio slides from the 14th Kodak International Exhibition and other slides from the Adelaide Camera Club competition. Discussion took place on camera club exhibits for the Horsham Show and other general matters.

Office bearers are: President, Mr Fitzsimmons; Vice-President, Mr R. Wynne; Hon.Secretary-Treasurer, Mr E. Hardinge; Assistant Hon.Secretary, Miss F. Gray.

CAMERA SHOW IS ONE OF CLUB'S BEST
This year's nineteenth annual exhibition of the Adelaide Camera Club features less novelty and technical fireworks and more good, straight camera work. The exhibition is in the Institute Building lecture room.

There is a lot of real, intrinsic pleasure to be derived from pure photography, in which the practitioner has seized on the potentialities of his subject in the very first instance and has then carried through the whole process logically and constructively to its destined conclusion.

We see this in such examples as "Penitent", a most satisfying piece of work from all viewpoints, "Winter", a really convincing study with a quietly professional touch and "Journey's End", a clean, simple statement. Altogether, this is the most pleasing show I have yet seen by this club.

Thursday 11th November 1954  Page 15 - The Narracoorte Herald (SA)

A special picture evening of the Narracoorte Camera Club is to be held at the Golden Gate Cafe on Saturday night. Four of Adelaide's leading cinematographers will be present to screen 16mm movie film, project color slides and show some of the prints which were exhibited in the recent Adelaide Camera Club Exhibition. The evening should be varied and interesting, especially to those who enjoy amateur photography as a hobby. Slides will be criticized and the prints analyzed for the benefit of local club members. The evening will be in the charge of the Vice-President of the Club, Mr B.C. Jellett, who made all the arrangements to ensure the success of the night's entertainment.

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB
The October holiday week-end held at Nuriootpa (in the famous Barossa Valley), was an event enjoyed by all the forty-five members and wives who attended. In brief, the program arranged by the organizers, in conjunction with the local enthusiasts, consisted of outings, visits to the local wineries, a slide and print display, and a barbecue. This is an annual function and one which is increasing in popularity each year.

Our Annual Exhibition was successfully concluded with a club evening during which it was discussed and possible improvements and innovations were suggested by members.

The last competition for the year was held on November 1st, and the following awards were gained:

ANNUAL EXHIBITION
Our Nineteenth Annual Exhibition was opened on 18th October, by President George Zeising in the presence of about four hundred visitors who were later entertained by a screening of the award winning slides in the color section. The Exhibition remained open for one week, and on the concluding night, October 25th, the color section of the Exhibition was screened before another packed house. In every respect the Exhibition must be considered one of the most successful in recent years. The award winners were:

EXHIBITS WIN IN ADELAIDE
Local photographers will be interested to learn that two members of the South Coast Camera Club have met with considerable success in the Adelaide Camera Club annual exhibition which will open next Monday. Mr. M.A. Strawbridge received a bronze plaque and Mr. J.R. Tregenza two merit certificates for color slides which had also previously won awards in the recent contest conducted by the South Coast Camera Club.

TALK ON PHOTOGRAPHY
A cordial invitation is extended to all camera owners to attend a talk on photography, to be held tonight at 8pm, in the Youth Club Hall. Are you perfectly happy with the results you get from your camera? Do you want to improve your standard? Do you want to graduate from the "pretty pussy in the backyard" snapshot to something better and on a higher level? Do you know the relation between shutter speed and the lens opening?

Many people have acquired a camera in the past 12 months and most of them want to learn some more about their hobby. This talk will help them. It is the first of the South Coast Camera Club renewed activities. Being affiliated with the Adelaide Camera Club which was the very first camera club in Australia, expert guidance and tuition to deal with any problems will be available. Questions invited, criticisms given by people who know their photography. Bring your cameras, your prints and slides and ask! If we don't know the solutions, we'll find them for you from the best and most up-to-date sources available. And not only photography in theory, on our "model" nights and demonstrations of lighting and darkroom techniques, you will receive practical assistance. Beginners and advanced amateurs, all are welcome.

SOUTH COAST CAMERA CLUB
CAMERA CLUB ACTIVITIES
The most encouraging enthusiasm shown by the people who attended the "Talk on Photography" last week ensures a lively re-opening of the South Coast Camera Club activities. Decision was readied to hold the first meeting on Monday, 6th August. This will take the form of a "model" night—a pretty model, all the lights, and you bring your own camera. All help and advice will be given. You do not have to be an expert or have an expensive camera; all that is required of you is to be a "camera fan". Box camera owners are just as welcome as the advanced 35mm color photographers and movie fans.

Plans are in hand to participate later on in competitions against other clubs, have camera outings on Sundays, visit Adelaide Camera Club on meeting nights, have a competition amongst local members in both sections (color and BLACK & WHITE PRINTS), and more functions to keep the club lively and keen.

Meetings will be held in the C.W.A. Hall, commencing on 6th August at 8pm. Remember the date and turn up. You'll like it!

TALK ON PHOTOGRAPHY
The South Coast now has a full-time resident professional photographer with a fully equipped studio. He is Victor Harbor-based Mr James Bateman, who has had a long-time interest in photography and is available for a wide range of photographic assignments. Mr Bateman, who is readily available from his studio in the Yilki Picture Framers building at Maud Street or by telephone, has been operating on the South Coast since June last year. He has the experience to carry our virtually any kind of photographic work, including portraits, weddings, children, engagements and product, aerial and commercial photography.

Mr Bateman has been involved with photography as a serious hobby for eight years and as a professional for the last 12 months. Before that he was employed in a processing laboratory for a year after having been Hon.Secretary of Adelaide Camera Club for 12 months.

Since moving to Victor Harbor, Mr Bateman has established a studio measuring 30 feet by 15 feet and equipped it with quality gear including Hasselblad, Nikon and larger format Super Graphic cameras and Multi-blitz and Ellinchrom studio flash. He has, therefore, the equipment and expertise to bring to any photographic assignment and in addition Mr Bateman endeavors to bring techniques from his special interests - fashion photography and photographing people - into his everyday photographic work.

VICTOR HARBOR HERITAGE FESTIVAL
Top photographer Mr Kel Roberts, whose work regularly featured on the covers of telephone directories, has a print exhibition in the public library. His talent has featured in calendars, magazines and overseas publications and he was the first ever recipient of the gold star award in the Adelaide Camera Club. He received countless prizes and recognitions for his work and the exhibition of 80 prints to be shown in Victor Harbor was highly commended when shown in Adelaide. This exhibition will be officially oipened by Mr John Mack at 11am on 6th October. And still on the line of lenses, the South Coast Camera Club will hold their 2nd Colour Slide exhibition during the Heritage Festival. A trophy will be awarded to the best slide in each category, comprising an open section, people, nature and South Coast heritage. Judges for the exhibition, to be staged at the Anglican Hall in Burke Street, Victor Harbor on 10th to 12th October, are from the South Australian Photographic Federation.

FOCUS ON THE PAST...
PRINTS FOR DISPLAY

The South Coast Camera Club will host a photography exhibition tracing the history of the Adelaide Camera Club this Friday night.

The exhibition, entitled The Heritage Collection, consists of more than 250 black and white photographs, which have since been transferred to 35mm transparencies, taken by members of the camera club between 1940 and 1980. The collection features works by several local master photographers, including the late Ainslie Roberts, Frank Bergh, Keith Cook, John Sprod and Roy Berry, late of Goolwa.

The collection has been compiled by the longest serving member of the club Mr Richard Leeton and is a must for lovers of fine photography. The exhibition is being shown to various camera clubs around the State and will eventually also be shown overseas. It will be exhibited in the music suite of the community recreation hall at Victor Harbor.

These photographs are by Keith Cook, of Victor Harbor, one of the
local master photographers whose work is included in The Heritage Collection.

2017

In 2017 the Adelaide Camera Club entered the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique Clubs World Cup competition. There were clubs from 41 countries, who between them submitted over 2,000 images for judging. The Adelaide Camera Club gained a creditable 20th position in a field of 201 clubs who participated.
