BEECHWORTH CAMERA CLUB

FORMED 1904

An unforeseen contingency prevented me from attending the preliminary meeting of the proposed Beechworth Camera Club, or I should most undoubtedly have been there. I am pleased, however, to learn that the object of the gathering was attained, and that the new club was safely launched on what, let us hope, will prove to be a useful and pleasurable career. The idea is certainly a most excellent one and cannot fail to mentally benefit all who avail themselves of its privileges. I shall watch this new local institution with sympathetic interest and you may expect to hear more about it later on.

A meeting was held at the Town-hall, Beechworth, on Thursday night last to consider the question of the formation of a camera club.

Mr R.B. Barnes, convener of the meeting, was voted to the chair, and explained that the main objects sought were the popularizing of photography, the assistance of some amateurs not so far advanced as others, and the advertising of Beechworth. There were at present a number of amateurs in the town who could get no assistance, and carried their cameras under their coats when they went out as they would carry a gun on a Sunday. He would like a club formed of amateurs for mutual assistance. They could go out on Wednesday afternoons and holidays and work in conjunction with the Beechworth Tourists Club, as the members would send prints all over the world. They could also work in conjunction with other camera clubs, and exchange photographs. Some clubs had question boxes on certain nights, but be would suggest, provided it was decided to form a club, that they have a question box every night of meeting, and to meet once a month. The subscription should be kept low. He moved that it was desirable to form a photographic club in Beechworth.

Mr C. Hembrow, in seconding this motion, said be thought the idea a good one, as such a club would be of great assistance to beginners and help to advertise the town, as most of them had friends in other places to whom they would send photographs which would help to popularize Beechworth. Each member could teach another something, as none of them were perfect in any branch of photography and could all learn something. He thought it a very good idea.

Mr R. Ford, speaking in support of the motion, thought they should be proud to have Mr. Hembrow with them on account of his knowledge of chemicals. He had no doubt they would all be pleased to help one another. He did not know much, but would be pleased to give what assistance he could. Everyone of them knew a little, some might know what others did not, and by meeting occasionally they could help one another. He would suggest that they meet at each other's houses to give demonstrations in development, and they would soon know far more than they did at present. The formation of a photographic club was also desirable for social reasons.

The motion was carried unanimously.

On the motion of Mr Barnes, seconded by Mr Hembrow, it was decided that the name be the Beechworth Camera Club.

ELECTION OF OFFICE BEARERS
The Chairman thought they first required a Hon.Secretary, and he was pleased to propose Mr. R. Loyer as Hon.Secretary and Treasurer; seconded by Mr H. Crouch, and carried.

Mr Loyer thanked the meeting for the appointment. They could rest assured the club would have his best assistance to further its interests and the art. He would also try to encourage some of the natives of Beechworth to visit some of their beauty spots.

Mr Barnes having declined the honor of President.

Mr. Crouch proposed, and Mr Barnes seconded, that Mr C. Hembrow be President. Carried unanimously.

Mr. Hembrow, upon taking the chair, said it was an honor he had not looked forward to, but be would do his best.

An executive committee consisting of the President, Hon.Secretary and Messrs. Barnes, Ford and Crouch, was appointed to prepare a set of rules for submission to next meeting.

Mr R.B. Barnes was elected Vice-President on the motion of the President, seconded by Mr Jarvis.

GENERAL BUSINESS
On the motion of the President, seconded by Mr Jarvis, the qualification of members was determined as an amateur photographer or one interested in photography, and it was also resolved that members have the privilege of inviting visitors to their meetings.

All present then enrolled themselves as members of the club.

Mr Crouch said the club was welcome to his dark room for demonstrations.

Mr Barnes guaranteed to obtain all material and chemicals required for demonstrations free from Melbourne firms as he had already had an offer to that effect.

Mr. Ford moved, and Mr. Crouch seconded, that the membership fee be 5s with a liability of another 5s if necessary to the requirements of the club. — Carried.

Mr Barnes said that interest was already being taken in the club, and he and Mr Loyer had been asked by Mr Poynton, M.A., president of the Beechworth Musical Competitions committee, to arrange for a set of views of Beechworth and vicinity for exhibition on the schedules about to be issued and sent all over the state. The meeting then adjourned.

BEECHWORTH CAMERA CLUB
A meeting of persons interested in photography was held in the Shire Hall, Beechworth, Victoria, on Thursday evening, August 11th, to consider the proposal of forming a camera club. There was a fair attendance, and Mr R. B. Barnes, convener of the meeting, was voted to the chair, and explained that the objects sought were the popularizing of photography, and the assistance of amateurs who were not so far advanced as others. Already there were a number of amateurs in Beechworth who could not get any assistance, and who carried their cameras under their coats when they went out as they would carry a gun on Sundays. He would like a club formed for mutual advantage. They could arrange for outings on Wednesday afternoons and holidays; they could also work in conjunction with other clubs and exchange photographic productions. Some clubs had question boxes on certain nights. He would suggest that they have a question-box on every meeting night, and to meet not less than once a month. The rate of subscription should be kept low. He moved, "That it is now desirable to form a camera club in Beechworth”.

Mr. C. Hembrow seconded the motion, and said he thought the idea a good one, as such a club would be a valuable assistance to beginners. Each member could teach another something, as none of them were perfect in any branch of photography. Mr. R. Ford, in supporting the motion, said he thought they should be proud to have Mr. Hembrow with them on account of his knowledge of chemicals. He had no doubt they would be pleased to help one another as some knew what others did not. By meeting occasionally they could help each other. He would suggest that they meet at each other’s houses and have practical demonstrations. The formation of a photographic club was also desirable for social reasons.

The motion was carried unanimously, and it was decided to name the club the Beechworth Camera Club, and the following officers were duly elected President, Mr. C. Hembrow; vice-president, Mr. R.B. Barnes; Hon.Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. R.W. Soyer.

An executive committee, consisting of the President, Vice-President, Hon.Secretary, and Messrs. R. Ford and H. Crouch, were elected to draw up a code of rules. It was decided that the qualification of members be determined as an amateur photographer or anyone interested in photography, and that the membership fee be 5s. per annum.

BEECHWORTH CAMERA CLUB
A meeting of the Beechworth Camera Club was held at Mr. Wade's pharmacy on Thursday evening, 15th March. Mr. Ford was elected secretary, in place of Mr. Loyer, who has left the district. With a view to strengthening the club the secretary was instructed to write to all amateur photographers in the town, inviting them to attend a meeting to be held at the same place, at 8pm on Thursday next, 22nd March, with a view to their enrollment as members. This has since been done, and nineteen letters were sent out on Saturday last, and it is anticipated that a large increase in membership will result.

BEECHWORTH CAMERA CLUB
A meeting of the Beechworth Camera Club was held at Mr. Wade's Pharmacy, Camp-street, Beechworth, on Thursday evening, 22nd March, a large increase of members taking place, no less than eleven new members being enrolled. The club was formed for the purpose of assisting one another in the art of photography, and the increase of members was very gratifying.

The following new members were nominated and balloted in: Messrs. Shuter, Edwards, Walton, Vallance, Eagleton, Vine, R.J. Mitchell, Misses M'Kenzie, B. Fletcher, R. M'Millian and I. Ford.

The next meeting will be held on the 2nd Thursday in April, when the members are requested to bring their cameras for examination into their various modes of working; also photos and negatives (especially faulty ones) so that their defects may be discussed.

A very nice album, holding over 100 pictures, is being filled with general views of Beechworth and district, and when full it is the club's intention to present it to the local public library.

An "outing" of members will be shortly arranged to take place on a Wednesday afternoon at Lake Kerferd, when a good muster is anticipated.

The Club was formed about eighteen months ago for the purpose of mutual assistance in the art of photography, and the increase of members was very gratifying.

The next meeting will be held on the second Thursday in April, when members are requested to bring their cameras for examination of the various modes of working, and also photos and negatives (especially faulty ones), so that their defects may be discussed.

The usual monthly meeting of the Beechworth Camera Club was held on Thursday, April 12. The attendance was poor, owing to the proximity of the holidays. Members brought their cameras, which were examined, and movements were pointed out in some which the owners themselves were not aware existed. A few faulty plates were also brought, and their defects discussed. The next meeting will be held on the second Thursday in May, when “Development” will be dealt with. Members are requested to bring plates with them to be developed at the meeting.

BEECHWORTH CAMERA CLUB
A meeting of the Beechworth Camera Club was held at Mr. Wade's pharmacy on Thursday night last. Owing to the regrettable departure from the district of Mr. Ford, the late secretary, a new secretary was required, and Mr. Wade was appointed to the vacant position. Mr. C. Mather was elected as a new member.

The members then developed negatives, each in their way, and the other members commented on their methods. Mr. Parker, a member of the camera club in connection with the Working Men's College, Melbourne, was able to give some useful hints to the Beechworth members.

Mr. Barnes gave an exhibition of machine tank development of films in ordinary light, which was found very interesting and instructive.

It was decided that the next meeting on 14th June would be devoted to bromide and gaslight printing.
