On February 18th, 24 prints were hung; this gave the judges a very hard task of elimination. The results were: 1, J. Allen; 2, T.G. Noonan; 3, L. Hackett.

We were the guests of Newcastle Photographic Society on February 22nd. We wish to thank all members of Newcastle Photographic Society for the welcome afforded us, also for the generous offer of assistance by their President, Mr. Manuel.

The meeting of 6th May was well attended. The Child Study Competition was judged by the well known Newcastle photographer, Mr. T. Jackson; the results were: 1, T.G. Noonan; 2, N.A. Lewis; 3, L.E. Rackett. Mr. Jackson discussed the prints and spoke on the indiscriminate use of filters, suggesting that more work be put into the print under the enlarger with the aid of dodgers and by shading all four comers of the print. Of the 13 submitted, Mr. Jackson said all were of good quality and reflected the progress of the club.

At our meeting of 20th May, there was a record attendance and 15 prints of good quality were shown. Our visitor, Mr. R. Manuel, President of the Newcastle Photographic Society, accepted an invitation to judge. Results of the open competition were: 1, W, Boxall; 2, N. A. Lewis; 3, G. Derkenne. Mr. Manuel discussed the prints and followed up with a demonstration of home portraiture, member Miss P. Linney being the model. Members were treated to a first class demonstration which included many variations of lighting and demonstrated the thousand and one pitfalls the beginner will encounter in the use of artificial light. Mr. Manuel will return next month and exhibit the results of the demonstration.

On 17th June, we entertained members of the Newcastle Photographic Society who said they were impressed with our progress and meeting facilities. Messrs. C. Collin, N. Tacon and J. Charker agreed to judge the June Open Competition. The results were: 1, G. Derkenne; 2, V. Hotston; 3, B. Jones. A very instructive talk was given by the judge. This was followed by the showing of several films which included a fine one on the manufacture of a camera and a demonstration of the natural curve, which contained many items of photographic interest. Our thanks to Mr. Charker for making available these instructional films.

Members of the Newcastle Photographic Society were our guests for the day on June 20th when we held our first combined outing. About forty enthusiasts descended on our fair suburb, and everything was photographed at least twenty times. By the way, who was the A Grader who got lost in the Pipe Works? When last seen he was stoking a kiln. Members were pleased to see that “Keeneye” Charlie Collin is able to get around again with a camera after being inactive following a recent accident. One of those little birds that follow photographers told me Dave Tacon fell in our beautiful lake.

Membership of the Belmont Camera Club is open to any person interested in photography. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of the month, in the Belmont Pipe Works Recreation Rooms, at 8pm. Further information from the Secretary, Mr. T. Noonan, 11 Tudor Street, Belmont, Newcastle. Tel. Belmont 169.
