BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The Bendigo Horticultural Improvement Society is to be congratulated on the unqualified success of its Grand Champion Chrysanthemum Show, which was opened in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon under most auspicious circumstances.

On the walls of the room were hung over 70 photograms of floral arrangements which have been entered by competitors for the handsome trophy offered by Mr. F. Prescott, Hon.Secretary to the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association. The pictures were much admired, and many of them are of more than usual excellence. The prize will be awarded by ballot, a ticket being supplied to each person entering the room. The holder writes on the ticket the number of the photogram which he or she may consider the best, and then drops the ticket into boxes which are placed in different parts of the room. At the close of the show the ballot tickets will be counted, and the prize awarded to the exhibitor securing the most votes. The result is being looked forward to with a deal of interest.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The first annual meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held last evening at the School of Mines. There was a good attendance, and the chair was occupied by Mr. J.W. Faul. The annual report was very encouraging, and the members may congratulate themselves upon the advance the association has made since its inception (October 22, 1895), especially so when all tuition received has been without a recognized Instructor. During the year fortnightly competitive exhibitions were held, with gratifying results. During last evening’s discussion, in which several of the new members joined, it was resolved to endeavor to obtain the services of Mr. Hart. It was decided that ladies should be admitted into the association.

During the evening Mr. Harcourt, who is leaving Bendigo on a trip home, was presented with a handsome souvenir, in recognition of his having been the inaugurator of the association. Mr. Harcourt expressed surprise at the thoughtful and unexpected gift and trusted that he would return in improved health.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association had cause to congratulate themselves upon the exceptionally well attended meeting at the School of Mines on Wednesday evening. Through their exertions and guaranteeing expenses to so able an instructor as Mr L. Hart they have now secured his weekly services to teach residents desirous to add to their other accomplishments the most fascinating, scientific and artistic one of photography. The director of the School of Mines had previously endeavored to form a photographic class, unfortunately without success, but now there is one, of which a small fee will entitle anyone to membership. The president (Mr J.W. Faul), in introducing Mr Hart, mentioned the liberal assistance the association had received from the Council of the School of Mines, and eulogized the many advantages to be derived from a knowledge of photography. To encourage young people under 20 years of age to join the class, the association intends to admit them at half the adult fees. It was his own and the hon. secretary's ambition to see a number of practical workers in Bendigo who could hold their own in competitions with the other leading cities of Australia. Mr Hart, who was received with applause, gave a preliminary lecture as to the methods he intended to adopt in his teaching, and classified by illustration the different species of amateur, particularly impressing upon the minds of those present the absolute necessity for his pupils to follow correctly his dictation and take notes. By so doing a novice may acquire even in the course of one term, sufficient knowledge to enable him to take a fair negative. For the term Mr Hart has prepared a syllabus (which can be obtained from the Hon.Secretary, Mr F. Napoli Prescott) of his afternoon and evening lessons, the first of which will be given next Wednesday afternoon. Intending students need not at present possess cameras.

BENDIGO SCHOOL OF MINES
The annual meeting of life governors and subscribers to the above institute was held last evening. Mr. C. Cohen (president) presided, and there were a dozen gentlemen present. The Annual Statements were tabled.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The Education department having refused to give the school a grant in aid for the purpose of establishing a photography class, the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association requested the council to permit its members to use a room for their meetings. The request was acceded to and the necessary fittings were placed in the room. Mr. L. Hart had been engaged as instructor by the association. The council having decided to advertise the school by means of photographs, to be shown at provincial and other exhibitions, a series of 24 views of the interiors of the class rooms, had been taken.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The first meeting for 1898 of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association is advertised for Wednesday next. A great number of new members are expected to join this term in consequence of the success of the first exhibition held at the School of Mines at the end of last year. The officers have just completed an interesting syllabus for the ensuing term, and special facilities are offered to novices to acquire the knowledge of the art. All information can be obtained from the officers or the Hon.Secretary, Mr. T. Napoli Prescott.

INTER-COLONIAL EXHIBITION
SECOND NOTICE

The inter-colonial exhibition of photographs under the auspices of the Queensland Amateur Photographic Association, which was opened on Thursday, continued to attract attention yesterday and again during last night. During the day Lady Lamington attended the exhibition and spent a considerable time in inspecting the pictures, in which she took great interest. Last night the exhibition of the lantern slides sent in for competition was continued and there were also demonstrations of the X ray photography by Dr. Thomson and Dr. Love. Lady Lamington was present at a special exhibition of the rays by Dr. Thomson, who explained the apparatus to the highly interested vice-regal visitors. Dr. Love also lucidly explained his apparatus to a large gathering and subsequently he photographed a lady's hand encased in her glove.

SEASCAPES
The class seascapes, like that for landscapes, is divided into two sections - namely, A for pictures over half plate and B for pictures half plate size and under. Here, too, the same fact is evidenced as in the landscape class — namely, that the majority of amateur photographers work with half plate and quarter plate, principally the latter. In the section "over half plate" there are only three exhibits, two of them by W. Livingston, of Dunedin and the other by J. Chrichton, also a New Zealand exhibitor. The judges awarded first prize to Mr. Livingston's picture "The End of the Voyage" and deservedly so. The idea is represented by a sailing vessel which has just taken aboard the towline from the steam tug. The picture is good and the photography is also good. There will be many, however, who will not agree with the second award, which the judges give to a view of a shipbuilding yard by the same amateur. The picture, "A Gloomy Day", by Mr. G. Chrichton, in which white surf and frowning rocks form prominent feature's, has much more of the artistic about it and photographically it is a far more difficult subject than the shipbuilding yard, which might be photographed and developed fairly successfully by a novice almost at any time. In the section for smaller pictures of seascapes, there is a much wider variety, ranging from the well studied composition, to the snapshot of some passing sailing boat. The judges selected a pretty little picture, entitled "Leaving Port", for first award. The artist, Mr. T. de C. Lewis, of Sydney, has had before him a difficult task. The exposure to catch a beautiful cloud effect with the sun behind the cloud has necessarily been very short and consequently the other parts of the picture which would have benefited by a longer exposure are rather dark. The second award was given to a snapshot by Mr. A.W. Pigott. The picture, however, lacks detail and it will be questioned whether "After the Storm", by A.C. Gifford, of Wellington and "The Boiling Surges", by the same exhibitor, do not possess greater artistic merits. Mr. D. M'Taggart shows quite a number of hand camera pictures of sailing boats and yachts.

METEOROLOGICAL
The class "Astronomical and Meteorological", including cloud and lightning, is limited to half-plate pictures and under. The prizes both went to A.E. Ridley, of Rockhampton, for two very effective cloud studies; entitled "A Tropical Sunset" and "Cloudland", respectively.

PORTRAITS AND GROUPS
The two winning pictures in section A of the class devoted to portraits and groups are both the work of New Zealand amateurs. The first represents an interior view of a drawing-room, with two figures looking expectantly towards the door. To this picture the artist, Mr. A.C. Gifford, has given the name of "Come In". It would have been a dangerous rival in the "Genre" class. The other picture, entitled "What Shall I Play", represents a lady sitting at a piano and is by W. Williams, of Dunedin. The judges awards in section B of this class will certainly be criticized. The first place is given to "The Village Schoolmaster", by Buckley Joyce, of Wellington. The picture is apparently made to serve the purpose of a display of extreme contrast, rather than that of a portrait. Many will prefer the portrait shown by A.C. Gifford, which, however, is put quite out of the count by the judges. The second place is deservedly given, however, to a beautifully modeled head of a lady, exhibited by Mr. Buckley Joyce.

GENRE SUBJECTS
The class devoted to genre subjects includes animal studies and studies of still life. The award of first place to Mr. A.C. Gifford, of Wellington, for his picture of a group of horses, which he facetiously names "A Local Branch of the Anti-Bot-fly Association", will probably receive a hearty endorsement, as will also the "highly commended" for an enlargement of the same picture. The second place falls to H. Mullett, for his picture, "Tired Out", in which three sleeping dogs do duty as models. In the other section of this class the awards are given to Mr. E. Bostock, of Ipswich, for his picture "An Errand of Mercy" and to Mr. D. M'Taggart for his picture of cattle, respectively. A first award is also given to the picture "Crossing the Stream", by Mr. W. Livingston.

ENLARGEMENTS
Both first and second place in the class "Enlargements" are given to New Zealanders. The first is given to Dr. Roberts for a splendid enlargement of a picture of a grand subject — namely a view of Lake Te Anau. The other is a scene "On the Clinton River", by Mr. A.C. Gifford.

SPECIAL PRIZES
Messrs. Baker & Rouse's special prize for the best three prints, half-plate or larger, on any description of Austral paper, was awarded to Mr. E. Bostock, of Ipswich, for prints on pearl paper — namely, "The Selector's Home", "View on the Brisbane River" and "An Errand of Mercy", while Mr. J.J. Campbell in the same competition is highly commended. A special prize offered by Messrs. Baker & Rouse for genre subjects was won by Mr. A.C. Gifford's picture, "Local Branch of the Anti-Bot-fly Association".

NON-COMPETITIVE EXHIBITS
The success and completeness of the exhibition is very largely owing to the liberal contribution of non-competitive exhibits. Conspicuous among them are photographs of Queensland scenery, lent by the Railway and Works Departments, but for artistic merit and clever photographic productions, the palm will be readily conceded to the superb collection of pictures sent by Mr. F. Napoli Prescott, of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association. Mr. F.C. Wills, of the Queensland Agricultural Department, also contributed liberally among the non-competitive exhibits. He shows a collection of snapshot pictures printed on Simplex paper and while some of the pictures are very good, others are spoiled by indifferent trimming or they show distortion owing to the camera not having been leveled properly when the exposure was made. Other interesting features among the non-competitive exhibits are the contributions of the Queensland Amateur Photographic Society. These are in five large frames, in which they were recently sent to the Dunedin Photographic Society's exhibition and include some very fine samples of photographic art. One of the frames is filled with excellent micro-photographs by Dr. J. Thomson. Micro-photographs are shown also by Mr. W.R. Colledge and by Mr. F.C. Wills. Dr. Lightholler, of Ipswich, contributes a very pleasing feature to the exhibition with his four large pictures, "The Sick Child", "Chaff", "The Sick Stockrider" and "The Bushman's Hut". Then there are some skiographs, or X ray photographs and an interesting feature in connection with these is the fact that attached to the photograph are the actual needles which have been located and extracted from limbs by aid of the X rays. Messrs. Baker & Rouse add interest to the exhibition by a display of prints on their now simplex paper and by a collection of very large photographs, of photographic apparatus, chemicals and appliances. At frequent intervals Mr. Ferguson printed and developed photographs on the Simplex paper by the light of an ordinary Welsbach incandescent gas burner. Much of the success of the exhibition is due to the unceasing efforts of the President, Dr. Thomson, of the Hon.Secretary, Mr. W.C. Voller, who has in Mr. H.W. Mobsby, one of the vice-Presidents of the association, an able lieutenant. The design for the certificate of award, which may be seen on the walls with the pictures, is the gratuitous work of Mr. Mobsby. The exhibition remains open today and Monday till 10pm. Further lantern and X ray exhibitions will be given to-night. For Monday Miss Stennet and Miss Thomson have arranged for a musical evening.

Saturday 27th August 1898  Page 5 - The Brisbane Courier (Queensland)

The Photographic Exhibition in Adelaide street was again open to the public yesterday and there was a marked improvement in the attendance. Lady Lamington and Mrs Pascoe Stuart yesterday viewed the pictures and were also present in the evening to witness the wonders of the X rays and to see the exhibition of lantern views which took place. The first series of views was projected on to the canvas on Thursday evening, consisting of competitive lantern slides. There was only time for a portion of these to be given, however and the rest were shown last evening. The whole of the slides shown were good, those coming from New Zealand, however, proving exceptionally line examples of this class of work.

The competitive portion of the exhibition can roughly be divided into two large parts. One of these is for all photographs exceeding half-plate size and the other for "half plate and under". One is immediately impressed, upon generally viewing this section of exhibition, with the large proportion of New Zealand work which is hung and also with the number of awards which have been secured by New Zealand exhibitors. In the larger landscape division, Mr. J. Richardson, of the Dunedin Photographic Society, secured the award for his "Elfin Bay", which is particularly responsive from a photographer's standpoint, the abrupt contrast offered by the water reflections making a very striking subject. The whole picture is good in composition and distinctly worthy. A sight of "Ball Creek" gains the second award and is also the outcome of the effort of a New Zealander. This persevering gentleman from Maoriland also wins the competition in the same section for the smaller photographs, while another New Zealander, Mr. W. Livingston, appropriates the first two awards in the large seascape division. In fact it becomes rather monotonous to review the number of New Zealand prize-winners of the different competitions. It must not be considered from this, however, that the local work is actually inferior to that of the Maori landers. It rather arises from the fact of the superior subject material which the people across the water possess. They revel in beautiful lakes and high mountains, while we must, perforce, be contented with nature (from a photographic point of view, at least) on a less impressive scale. However, much of the local work really reaches a high standard and our Queensland amateur photographers must be congratulated upon it. It would be useless to single out work where much is so good and where the quality throughout is so remarkably even. Suffice it to say that the competitive section of the exhibition is highly interesting and is extremely valuable, insomuch as it gives a generally representative selection of views of the land we live in. It may be mentioned that not the least interesting part of the exhibition are two large albums, sent by the Surveyor-General, which contain some 300 photographs of Queensland scenery and industries - a very valuable education in itself to one who desires to get an insight into the great resources of the colony.

The first camera day of the new term of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association will take place next Wednesday. For this term a very practical syllabus has been arranged, extending over six months. It includes in its many interesting items, special facilities and inducements for novices who desire practical instructions in the rudimentary practice of photography. One evening during every month is to be set apart for their benefit, besides having the advantage of obtaining instruction at every meeting of the advanced classes.

The first fortnightly meeting for 1899 of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held on Tuesday evening at the School of Mines. The president (Mr. J.W. Faul) occupied the chair, and outlined the course of work arranged for the session. Besides the ordinary fortnightly meeting which will be devoted to the consideration of papers by various members the alternate Tuesdays will be given to the instruction of beginners under the charge of some of the older hands. Tuesday next is the first of these beginners evenings, and Mr. Faul will be in charge. Excursions will be held once a month, and at such other times as may be arranged. Mr. Faul and Mr. Creeth afterwards gave a highly interesting demonstration of toning on gelatine and albumen papers respectively, the former giving a careful explanation of Mr. H. Baker’s system of “pre-tone”. There was a good attendance and the members of the club who were not present missed a very enjoyable and instructive evening.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
At the School of Mines last evening, under the auspices of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association, the Rev. Father Moore delivered an illustrated lecture on “Photography for Travelers, and a Trip up the Rhine”. Mr. J.W. Faul presided, and explained that the lecture was the first of a series of evenings which the society intend holding, to bring the advantages of photography as an art and a science more prominently before the public. He cordially welcomed those present, and invited those who were not amateur photographers to become members of the association. Father Moore said that photography at the present time was no longer among the mysteries of the scientist. It was an interesting art that any person with average intellect might learn. Until recently photography was confined to the studio and the professional photographer; but now that education has so revolutionized society, photography has been made as familiar and as convenient as other accomplishments. Photography was of special advantage to the traveler, for a man traveling without a camera lost the very essence of his trip. He then showed a number of photographs reproduced as lantern slides of a trip he had taken up the Rhine. The pictures comprised views of Amsterdam, Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, Cologne, Baden, Bingen, Frankfort, Heidelberg, Strasburg, Fryberg, Lucerne, Lake Constance, Berne, Lake Geneva and Mount Blanc.

The fortnightly meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held at the School of Mines on Tuesday evening, when Mr. F.N. Prescott gave a lecture on “Negative Making”. After noticing briefly the elementary details of the work of manipulation, the speaker proceeded to point out a number of defects which are liable to occur in the making of a picture — both in the mechanical part of the work and in the composition. A larger number of negatives were shown and commented on, and the whole formed a very instructive evening. A vote of thanks concluded the proceedings.

The fortnightly meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held at the School of Mines on Tuesday evening last. Mr. Selwood was to have given a paper on Lantern Slides, but as he was unable to be present his place was taken by Mr. F.N. Prescott, who gave a practical demonstration on the mode of making slides from the negative, by selecting a negative and making a slide from it, pointing out the various precautions to be taken as he went along. There was a good attendance and much interest was displayed in the speaker’s remarks, as shown by the number of questions asked afterwards. The next meeting will be on May 3, when Mr. Vale will give a paper on “Enlarging”. The next field day is on 26th April, on which date it was decided to visit the Sheepwash Creek.

The fortnightly meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held at the School of Mines on Tuesday evening. The president was absent owing to his having met with an unpleasant accident, which, however, was fortunately not serious. Mr. W. Vale gave a demonstration on “Enlarging” with the aid of a small enlarging lantern obtained for the occasion. There was not time to do a great deal, but in the making of a couple of prints enough was shown to give an insight into the process. Mr. Vale’s explanations were clear and to the point. The next meeting will be held on May 16, when Mr. Faul will give an evening on stereoscope work.

The Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association met at the School of Mines on Tuesday evening. There was to have been a demonstration of the use of the flashlight, but this was postponed owing to the absence of one of the demonstrators. The vacancy was filled by Mr. F.N. Prescott, who illustrated the manner of using "Simplex" paper. Afterwards the committee held a business meeting, when it was decided, to buy an enlarging lantern that had been obtained on approval. A syllabus was drafted for the coming half-year, and it was resolved to endeavor to induce members to take more interest in the competitions of the society. There will be two competitions held during next term — one in September for landscapes, and one in November for groups. As it was found that there was a balance to credit, it was resolved to vote a guinea to the funds of the school. The meeting then dispersed.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association on Tuesday resolved itself into a gathering of members and their friends to inspect the society's half-yearly exhibition. There was a very fair collection of work of all classes — portraiture, landscape, etc., also a large number of stereo views. In response to the offer of a prize by the Hon.Secretary, a good number of cloud pictures was shown, but the task of judging them was postponed. The pictures will be left at the society's room at the School of Mines till Saturday, and they may be seen there in the meantime by anyone interested. The second half-year will begin on 18th July.

The fortnightly meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held at the School of Mines on Tuesday evening, when Mr. Edwards dealt with the subject of flashlight. A clear explanation was given of the use of artificial illuminants in photography and the most useful were enumerated, magnesium, either in powder or ribbon, being absolutely the best. The various difficulties were treated of and it was pointed out that one of the chief was that the subjects were generally in awkward places, such as down a mine, where one is cramped for room, and there is trouble in focusing. A number of interesting prints were shown in illustration of the remarks made. The paper was much appreciated by the members present, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Edwards for the interesting and instructive evening provided. Mr. Prescott then presented his prize to Mr. C.E. Buley for the best cloud picture shown at the society’s June exhibition. At the next meeting of the society Mr. Prescott will give a lantern lecture on “Photographic Aims”. The public are cordially invited.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The annual meeting of members of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held at the School of Mines on 26th March, at which 17 members were present. Mr. J.B. Edwards (the president) presided.

The exhibition of members work done during the year was very good, the older members considering that it was the best since they had joined.

The competitions for the prizes offered were keen, all the awards being made, except that for the best work by new members, a decision being deferred owing to the difficulty of deciding between the exhibits of Messrs. R. Jeffrey and J.W. Smith.

The competitions won were as follow: Architectural interior, the gift of Mr. J.W. Faul, won by Mr. J.B. Edwards; Mr. Prescott's prize for cloud effect, won by Mr. J. Miller; Mr. Vale's prize for best print on simplex paper, won by Mr. F.D. Jones; best three pictures taken at club outings, the gift of Mr. Burston, won by Mr. F.D. Jones. Gifts of three prizes for competition during the ensuing year were reported.

The committee reported that 10 new members had joined the association.

Mr. R. Jeffrey offered to instruct new members in the course which he had gone through at the Working Men's College in Melbourne. Mr. Jeffrey was heartily thanked for his offer, which was accepted, and each alternative Tuesday after Easter Tuesday was fixed for the "novices class".

The ordinary fortnightly club meetings were appointed to be held on Tuesdays.

During the year appliances for the use of members in the dark room at the School of Mines have been purchased.

The balance-sheet showed a small surplus. Reference was made to the good progress resulting from the use of the dark room, kindly lent to the club at the School of Mines, and furnished by the club. It was considered that as funds permitted, the appliances provided for members should be increased.

During the year the Rev. T. Adamson kindly delivered a public address in the School of Mines hall, the subject being the Jenolan Caves, illustrated with very beautiful limelight views.

The "BENDIGONIAN": To-day's "Bendigonian" is a splendid and artistic number. The prizes offered by the "Bendigonian" to the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association for competition amongst its members for landscape and mining views has drawn forth a capital collection. In this issue we reproduce the winning landscape views by Mr. W. Heffernan, and the successful mining views by Mr. J.B. Edwards.

The Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association, held its usual fortnightly meeting at the School of Mines on Thursday evening. There was a very good attendance of members, many being ladies. Mr. T. Hall, vice-president, presided. Transparencies and opals, at the hands of Mr. J.B. Edwards (the president) formed a demonstration of the greatest interest. This higher branch of photographic art opens up scope for decorative photography, such as doors and over mantels, panels in opal and lamps shades, and stereoscopic views in transparencies. Mr. Edwards showed many particularly good views, all of which were praised for their clear and perfect detail. Arrangements were made for the association's outing on 2nd September, and a pleasant and instructive evening was brought to a close with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Edwards.

Jeffrey gave a demonstration of copying, explaining clearly the whole process, so that the younger members were given a good insight into the mode of operation of this useful branch of photography, and many useful points of interest to the older members. A supply of Kadoid films were distributed (from V. Kodak Co.) for use as a test during the outing of September 2nd, which, should the weather hold good, promises to be one of the largest ever held by the association. At the conclusion, Mr. Jeffrey was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his demonstration of the evening, and also for his able treatment of the subject of development of plates at the novices class held on the 20th.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association had a very enjoyable outing to the Sheepwash Creek on Wednesday afternoon (postponed from the 2nd). As was expected, there was a record attendance, in all twenty-two, eight of whom were ladies, so that the aggregate value of the cameras must have been fairly high. A start was made at a little after 2pm from the Fountain, some members traveling in buggies, others on bicycles. One enthusiastic member being late walked out.

A number of views were taken of the creek below the tannery, some of the more picturesque spots being subject to very much attention, all kinds of cameras being used, stereoscopic, 1/2 and 1/4 plate, panorama, and the hand Kodak. A stay of nearly three hours was made, and apart from the photographic interest the perfect day rendered the outing a most pleasant one. Those who remained till the last were taken in a group by Mr. R.E. Jeffrey, an exceedingly good picture being the result. At the ordinary meeting held on Thursday evening two plates taken during the outing were developed by each of the members, with results on the whole good. These will be put into competition after the prints have been toned at the next meeting of the association.

On Wednesday afternoon last another very successful outing was held — this time to Axe Creek. A number of very good views were taken. The ladies thoughtfully provided afternoon tea, and as the day was rather warm this was greatly appreciated by all. Mr. J.B. Edwards secured an excellent group just before a start was made for home.

There was a large attendance of members. The item on the syllabus; "Glazing and Mounting Glazed Prints," demonstrated by Mr. R.E. Jeffrey, proved very interesting. This simple and inexpensive method will be very acceptable to those of the members who favor a highly polished prints. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrator at the conclusion of the meeting. Mr. Jeffrey, by whom during the year the novices have been so clearly and interestingly shown so many things essential to their becoming adept, took as his subject, "Intensifying Weak Negatives" at the novices class, held on the 15th, which was well attended.

There was a record attendance, and two new members were introduced. Mr. R.E. Jeffrey gave an interesting and instructive demonstration of “Printing on platinum paper,” which proved to members the very little skill actually required to obtain the best results in the use of this high grade and beautiful toned paper. Several questions on the subject were asked and satisfactorily answered, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Jeffrey. Attention was drawn by the president to the many competitions open to members in connection with the association, which close in May, and arrangements were made for a novices class next Thursday evening, when Mr. Jeffrey will take the subject, “Negative making".

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The fortnightly meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held at the School of Mines on Thursday evening, Mr. J.B. Edwards presiding. There was a large attendance. The next item on the syllabus for the year was taken, the “Question Box.” This is something entirely new, and it is evident by the attendance and the many questions asked that members showed a great interest in it. The questions concerning photographic work in writing were first placed in a box, and were drawn separately by one of the lady members. The president then called on a member to answer. A discussion followed as to the best means of surmounting the numerous difficulties, and in this way valuable information was gained by all. This innovation should undoubtedly prove to be most helpful to all members alike. Some questions led to a good deal of discussion, whilst others were more easily disposed of. Altogether an interesting evening was spent. Arrangements are being made for another outing, to take place shortly.

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
Yesterday afternoon there was a good attendance at the Forest-street Methodist school-room to view a collection of photographs, the work of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association. The display was all the more praiseworthy because of the variety of the exhibits, and of the artistic touches on the greater number of the pictures. City views figured largely and the members responsible for their production showed an aptitude in securing the most striking results from the original before them. For instance, a splendid copy of the conservatory, law courts, post office and Hustler’s mine was secured through the operator focusing apparently from off the creek wall near the fernery, a position which one would hardly think of taking. There were group photos, scenic and portrait enlargements, studios from life, flora and fauna, and “snappy” views for post cards and envelopes, none of which failed to attract attention. The competitive work was judged as follows:

BENDIGO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
Yesterday the members of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association held their annual exhibition in the Forest-street Methodist schoolroom. The hall was nicely arranged, and over 200 photos, were shown. They included many gems of the photographer's art, more particularly in regard to studies on postcards and enlargements, some of which were beautifully crisp and clear. As camera work, the collection would compare very favorably with any similar collection elsewhere. The association has progressed with remarkable rapidity of late, and now has some 50 members. In every case the standard of work is much above that of the ordinary amateur. The artists showed a keen eye for the artistic in culling their subjects, and it would not be thought that there were so many pretty spots in the district, and even in the heart of the city, as those seized upon by many of the competitors.

In the evening a concert was given, at which songs were rendered by Mr. E.H. Collett and Mr. H. Thomas, Miss E. Woolcock, Miss Lena Collins, Miss J. Matcott, Miss A. Curnow, and Miss E. Brown, and a recitation was given by Mr. H. Coombs. The accompanist was Mr. H. Whitford. The chair was occupied by the ex-president, Mr. J.B. Edwards, who made the presentations. Mr. Jeffrey, who has been instructor to the novice classes, was made the recipient of a handsome silver teapot in recognition of the services he had rendered to many beginners. The function was concluded with light refreshments.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Bendigo Amateur Photographic Association was held at the School of Mines on Thursday evening, the vice-president, Mr. J.H. Crump, in the chair. There was a good attendance of members. The subject on the syllabus was a "Demonstration by the Kodak Company," which proved highly interesting and instructive. The lecturer (Mr. Symons) introduced and described in detail one of the latest and up-to-date novelties recently put upon the market by the Kodak Company, viz., the Premo Film Pack, which certainly appears to be one of the most ingenious inventions yet placed in the hands of photographers. It was shown to be a simple and efficient daylight changing appliance devised for flat films. Its use was very fully described, after which the lecturer gave a practical demonstration upon film development and bromide printing, which was highly appreciated. At the close a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to the Kodak Company, and the lecturer, who suitably responded. At the next meeting of the association, on the 15th December, an instructive demonstration on P.O.P. work will be given by Mr. R.E. Jeffery.

There was a fair attendance, and the chair was occupied by the retiring President, Mr. T. Hall. The show of photographs, the work of the members, was most creditable.
