Report on monthly meeting of the Brisbane Camera Group held on Monday 3rd April 1950.

Permanent club rooms have been obtained with the TOC H which has moved to new quarters in the E.S.& A. Bank Chambers, 110 Roma Street, Brisbane, and all future meetings will be held at that address on the first Monday in every month.

The President, Mr. F.L. Masters, occupied the chair at the monthly meeting held on 3rd April 1950.

Business was mainly confined to a lecture on Portrait Lighting delivered by Mr. Garth Grant-Thomson, who demonstrated various lighting arrangements and gave a very instructive lecture. He was assisted by Miss June Meek and Miss Allison Reedman, who very graciously lent their services as models for the evening.

A representative of the “Brisbane Telegraph” was present, and took several shots for publication in that newspaper.

The monthly print competition was won by Mr. John Schrauwen, with Mr. Fred Masters and Mr. Harry Clements in second and third places respectively.

The May meeting was held at Rafael Tornquist Studios which, by the courtesy of Mr. Ralph Hyde, were thrown open for the use and instruction of club members—even to the free use of sheet film!

Mr. Cyril Savitsky gave an instructive talk on lighting and depth-of-focus problems, and members took pictures of the models with both the studio camera and their own cameras, with the intention of submitting them for the next portrait contest.

First prize in the monthly contest was awarded to Mr. Harry Clements (the subject being “Architecture”), while second went to Mr. John Schrauwen, with Ross Barber and Bill Tevnan tying for third.

Several visitors and some new recruits were noticed in the ranks, and it was gratifying to see the large number of prints submitted for the contest.

On Monday 5th June, the Brisbane Camera Group held its monthly meeting in the club rooms at Roma Street, Brisbane.

The night was an outstanding one, as a lecture and demonstration on Retouching and Coloring was given by Brisbane artist Miss Agusta F.I. Hobday. Members gathered many valuable hints from the talk.

Mr. E Barnbaum, Vice-President, occupied the chair in place of the President, Mr. Fred Masters, who was absent through illness. Mr. Barnbaum asked that a vote of thanks be passed to Miss Hobday, and this was carried by acclamation.

Mr. R. McDermott gained 1st prize in the monthly print competition “Clouds”, while Mr. T. Scruse was awarded 2nd as well as 3rd equal. Mr Doug Smart also gained 3rd equal.

Mr. John Schrauwen won the Field Day contest with an attractive study of a bridge in rustic setting.

Other lectures are being arranged by Brisbane artists and photographers. Visitors and intending members are very welcome.

A most enjoyable field day was held on 23rd September at “Seventeen-Mile Rocks” on the Brisbane River. About 40 members were present, and many exposures were made in anticipation for the set subject - Animals.

Guest for the day was Dr. A. Buchanan, of Oxley, who, in his brief photographic career, has already scored at the Brisbane Exhibition.

Dr. Buchanan asked that a Corinda branch of the Brisbane Camera Group be formed to allow discussion amongst local residents who were keenly interested, but too busy to attend city meetings. The President said the matter would receive consideration at the next meeting.

The monthly meeting was held at the Clubrooms on 2nd October 1950, and the President, Mr, F.L. Masters, occupied the chair. Discussions were held on matters affecting the constitution. It was also decided again to approach the Press with a request to publish photographers names under their pictures; not to alter titles; and to trim only where absolutely necessary.

Several guests and new members were present, and the monthly print competition, judged by G. Grant-Thomson, was won by G. Savitsky, with R. Barber second, and J. Schrauwen and R. Barber sharing third place.

On the following night, 3rd October, members attended the studios of Dorothy Coleman for a lecture and demonstration on portrait lighting, group lighting, posing and arrangement of models and hands.

Mrs. Coleman, portrait painter and member of the Royal Queensland Art Society, gave many valuable hints, and stressed the need to limit equipment, if possible, to one or two diffused lights, one spot and, most important of all, a reflector.

Mrs. Coleman’s training in art was evident in all examples of her work seen. She showed some of her negatives, and told members that she preferred to compose her pictures on the ground-glass, with a careful eye to the tone of the background, thereby providing negatives suitable for “straight” printing.

The monthly meeting was held in the Club Rooms on 6th November, when guest-speaker for the evening was Mr. L. McKay, an International Salon exhibitor, who is also known in Brisbane for his successes at the Royal National Show.

Mr. McKay said that salon judges frequently examined prints under a very strong light with a view to studying the finish; he advised intending entrants to spare no pains to obtain a flawless print. He then proceeded to demonstrate the arts of spotting, knifing, and oil reinforcing on prints, giving detailed explanations throughout. The lecture was greatly appreciated by all present, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed.

Results of the Monthly Print Competition were:
SET SUBJECT: “SILHOUETTE”: l, T. Scruse, 2, N. Berg; 3rd, T. Scruse.
SET SUBJECT: “CONTACT PRINTS”: G. Searle.
FIELD DAY COMPETITION: “ANIMALS”: J. Schrauwen.

A motion was passed admitting female members to the Club, and those wishing to join should now make application to the Secretary, Mr. Ron Close, 420 George Street, Brisbane.

Recent visitors to club meetings included H.N. Jones ARPS Photographic Society of New South Wales and H. Hollingsworth Western Australian Camera Club.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
In spite of very unpleasant weather, there was almost a full attendance at the December meeting of the club on Monday last, when regret was expressed at the illness of the Hon.Secretary, Miss Sonia Campbell. The meeting was in charge of the president, Mr. B.H. Austin, and the principal business dealt with concerned the inauguration of a "Print of the Month" contest.

After the idea had been explained, it was decided to adopt the scheme, and the first display of entries will be held at the January meeting of the club. Members may enter in either or both of two classes, to be known as Class A and Class B.

In Class A, entries must be mounted enlargements not smaller than 6inch by 4inch, and must be entirely the work of the competitor. They may be toned, but not hand colored. Points will be allotted, and winning prints will remain the property of the exhibitor, but must be available for the Club Display in February.

In Class B, entries may be contact prints or small enlargements not larger than 5in. by 4in., to cater for users of miniature cameras. Entries in this class must have been taken by the competitor, but trade finishing will be allowed though not encouraged. Other conditions are the same as for class A entries. Judging, for the first few months, at least, will be by vote of the members present.

It appears certain that considerable interest will be taken in the contest, which will be open to members of the club, including any who join in time to enter prints for the competition.

A collection of 25 prize winners in A.P.R. competition was received from the Editor of the Australasian Photo Review for inspection by the members of the club. This gesture was greatly appreciated by the members, who should benefit considerably by the study of the best work of enthusiastic amateur photographers from other, and in most instances older clubs. Non-members of the club certainly missed a treat. It is hoped to have, early in the New Year, a further collection of prints from the Brisbane Camera Group for display, possibly at the January meeting.

Held at the clubrooms on Monday 4th December, the First Annual General Meeting was devoted mainly to the election of office-bearers, the reading of the President’s, Secretary’s and Treasurer’s Reports, and the presentation of a cheque to Mr. John Schrauwen for the best work in monthly competitions during the year. This prize was awarded on a points system.

Office-bearers elected for 1951 are: Patron, D. McInnes; President, F. Masters; Vice-President, L. Barnbaum; Hon. Secretary, R. Close; Hon. Treasurer, D. Smart; Publicity Director, G. The first meeting for the year was held on 5th February in the club rooms at Roma Street, and was attended by more than forty people, including eight visitors. The President, Mr. F. Masters, occupied the Chair.

A demonstration of hand-coloring of photographs was given by well-known Brisbane artist and art teacher, Miss Agusta F. I. Hobday, who recently joined the club with the object of giving members the benefit of her years of experience in art. This was considered a fine gesture, and a vote of thanks was moved by Mr. J. L’Estrange. Miss Hobday’s demonstration was of great interest to members, and she went to no end of trouble to explain each point as she progressed.

A visitor of interest was Mr. D. Frank Luxeder, a New Australian, and former member of the Budapest Camera Club in Hungary. Mr. Luxeder is a keen salon worker.

The Club Secretary, Mr. Ron Close who, by the way, is doing a very fine job and putting in a great deal of work with correspondence and interviews, read a letter from the President of the Professional Photographers Association, Mr. W. Poulsen. The letter contained an invitation to members to submit prints for display in a Commonwealth Jubilee Train which is to tour Queensland. Several members have already submitted prints.

Results of the monthly competition (“Child Study”) were:
“A” GRADE — l, Dr. A. Buchanan; 2, T. Scruse; 3, J. Schrauwen, G. Varcados (equal).
“B” GRADE — 1, G. Londy; 2, F. Wallis; 3, F. Wallis.

A record attendance marked the March meeting, which was held in the club rooms in Roma Street on 6th March.

Visitors present included Mr. James Savage, from the Photographic Society of New South Wales; Mr. H.F. Sama, President of the Kingaroy Camera Club; and Mr. Victor Dawes, of Hobart.

A very interesting and instructive evening was provided by Mr. Stewart Disney-Smith, Maintenance Officer for the Department of Public Instruction. Mr. Disney-Smith brought along a 16mm sound projector and showed several films, including “Antarctica, 1948”, “Hunting Crocodiles”, and “The Making of a Mural”. The last-named was in color, and gave an indication of the tremendous amount of planning, sketching, modeling and painting done by the artist before attempting the actual mural. A short film of the peanut factory fire at Kingaroy, made by Mr. Sama, was also screened.

The Vice-President (Mr. I. Bambaum) moved that a vote of thanks be passed in appreciation of Mr. Disney-Smith’s work, which entailed a week-end of preparation. This was carried by acclamation.

Miss Augusta Hobday, who has been elected to the panel of judges, assisted with the judging of the Monthly Print Competition: “LANDSCAPE”:
A GRADE: l, R. Close; 2, T. Scruse; 3, T. Scruse.
B Grade: No award.
C GRADE: 1, C. Searle; 2 (Equal), J. Gettons and N. Berg.

The February field day consisted of an outing to Sully’s Gully, on the Pirie River, and an inspection of the National Broadcasting Station at Bald Hills.

On the 2nd April a meeting was held at the Club Room in Roma Street, and was attended by more than 50 members and visitors. The chair was occupied by Mr. F. Masters.

An excellent demonstration on enlarging principles and practices was given by Mr. Garth Grant-Thompson. Finally, he explained the basic steps in printing for salon work and went to no end of trouble to give the members the full benefit of his experience. All equipment, chemicals and sensitive material used was supplied by the lecturer.

The meeting closed with the judging of the monthly competition (“Table Top”). The prints were given an expert and comprehensive criticism by the panel of judges. Results were:
A GRADE: 1, T. Scruce; 2, H. Clements; 3, R. Barber.
B GRADE: No entries.
C GRADE: 1, C. Allison, 2, J. Gettons; 3, G. Searle.

At the meeting held on 7th May Mr. H.A. Snape, of Kodak, Brisbane, lectured on the art of the late Dr. Julian Smith. It was an interesting and informative discussion in which Mr. Snape gave the club members some idea of the photographic genius and character of this outstanding man.

The club has increased its agenda so that two meetings a month are now held, one given over to lectures or demonstrations, the other to general discussion and criticism of members prints.

Another move made to increase the help the club gives to its members is the formation of discussion groups to enable local members to meet informally and discuss individual problems. The first of such meetings was held by the Western Suburbs members at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Murry, and it was highly successful. It is apparent that members individually, and the club generally, will benefit from such gatherings.

There was a good attendance of members at the 7th June meeting which was entirely devoted to a lecture given by Mr. C. Savitsky on “Developers and Their Reactions to Various Types of Films”.

Mr. Savitsky, a member of the club, being a commercial photographer used to working with both color and monochrome, has a wide background of experience to draw upon to answer the numerous questions that the club members asked him, a fact which showed that the members have a definite active interest in bringing their photography to a top quality standard, which, after all, is the ultimate aim of all keen amateur photographers.

An interesting talk on print finishing was given by Mr. L. McKay on Monday, 1st October, at the club rooms. Mr. McKay said it was desirable to do as much spotting work as possible on the negative so as to avoid knifing the finished print. He then proceeded to give a demonstration of negative retouching and print spotting, showing how it was possible by the judicious use of crayon or oil pigment to tone down unwanted highlights, deepen shadows, and alter cloud formations.

All present were keenly interested and thanked Mr. McKay for giving them the benefit of his experience.

On Monday 5th November, the guest speaker was Mr. R. Gregory ARPS. who delighted club members with a screening of his 35mm Kodachrome record of his recent trip to the Barrier Reef, Cairns, and Atherton Tableland.

The projected transparencies, which included interesting coral formations and other marine life, showed that Mr. Gregory had a lively appreciation of color and a well-developed pictorial sense.

At the close of the talk, the speaker answered questions relating to the technical side of the work and the President, Mr. F.L. Masters, asked that a vote of thanks be proposed. This was carried by acclamation.

The resignation is announced of Mr. H. Hollingsworth, who is leaving for Perth.

Results of the monthly print competition held on 25th October are:

Mr. Masters gave an address in which he stressed the value of discussion groups at the private homes of members. He said that membership had increased from fifteen to seventy in less than eighteen months, and that he had high hopes for the future of the Club.

A move is afoot to affiliate the Club with the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, and a Syllabus is being compiled showing lectures, field days and competitions for the coming year.

The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read, and the members were advised that the first Monday in each month would be devoted to Print Competitions and criticism of prints, while the third Monday would be set aside for lectures.

The highlight of the meeting held in the clubrooms, Wickham Street, on 21st April, was the lecture given by Mr. G. Grant-Thomson ARPS, on portraiture.

The lecturer had spared no effort in his preparation of the excellent material which dealt with portraiture in all stages from the best suited type of camera to actual demonstrations of lighting and the posing of the model, the most interesting demonstration being the use of one lamp and a home-made reflector. All equipment used in the demonstration had been brought in by the lecturer.

In the absence of the President, Mr. F. Masters, Mr. I. Barnbaum, Vice-President, moved a vote of thanks for the most instructive lecture the Group had been given, which came at a most opportune time as the set subject for the Club’s June meeting is portraiture; this was carried most heartily by the large attendance of members.

The 5th May being a public holiday, this meeting was canceled and the print night transferred to the bi-monthly meeting held on the 19th May.

The large attendance, which has become a feature of prints nights, was again in evidence and a total of forty prints was submitted to the judges.

The criticisms and hints given by the judges are becoming more evident in the high quality of many of the prints submitted.

Winners for the night for Set Subject 'Trees' were;
A GRADE: 1, H. Clements (34 points); 2, T. Scruse (30 points); 3 (equal), A. Buchanan and G. Searle (27 points).
B GRADE: 1, G. Fowler (36 points); 2, W. Hughes (32 points); 3, C. Prius (30 points).
OPEN — CLASS A: 1, D. McDermant (45 points); 2, J. Schrauwen (32 points); 3, T. Scruse (31 points).
OPEN — B GRADE: 1, C. Prius (32 points); 2, G. Fowler (31 points); 3, R. Kemp (16 points).

PRINT OF THE MONTH: G. Fowler (Set Subject).

Very high praise was given to the excellent prints submitted by D. McDermant and J. Schrauwen, both judges recommending that salon size prints be attempted for submission overseas.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Grant-Thomson for the boost given to the Group in his non-competitive display of animal studies at the Queensland Industries Fair.

Results of the monthly print competition held on June 2nd were;
A GRADE — OPEN: 1, J. Schrauwen; 2, F. Wallis; 3, D. McDermant.
A GRADE — SET: 1, D. McDermant (Print of the Month); 2 (equal), T. Scruse, A. Buchanan.

The general meeting held on July 21st was attended by twenty-four members and four visitors and was presided over by Mr. Masters. As this was our regular lecture night the general business was dealt with as briefly as possible and final arrangements made for our coming Field Day on July 27th. The meeting was closed early so that Mr. G. Jurott could proceed with his lecture on Enlarging. This was a most interesting subject and very ably demonstrated. At the conclusion the Vice-President, Mr. I. Barnbaum moved a vote of thanks to Mr. Jurott and to Mr. W. Hughes who loaned his enlarger.

On 27th July, sixteen members and friends motored to Ipswich for the regular outing and field day and the weather was made to order. A feature of the visit was the kindness and generosity bestowed by Ipswich Club member, Mr. G. Londy, who made his cafe available so that lunch could be enjoyed in comfort. Members returned to Brisbane via Moggill and Indooroopilly, where some good material was available for country shots.

Print night was on 4th August and the Set Subject was Pattern and Texture. There was a very good display of prints and the judges, Mr. R. Gregory ARPS and Mr. G. Grant-Thomson ARPS, made the following awards:
PRINT OF THE MONTH: T. Scruse.

The meeting held on 20th October was attended by about twenty members. In the absence of the President the meeting was opened by Mr. I. Barnbaum, Vice-President, who introduced Mr. L. Mackay. Mr. Mackay is very well known in Brisbane for the quality of his print finishing and it was on this subject that he gave a most interesting lecture that night. The main points of print finishing were spotting, reinforcing with powders and reinforcing with oils, and also general improvement of prints.

There were twenty-eight members present at the meeting held on November 3rd, which was our Print night. The Set subject for this month was Commercial and in introducing Mr. W. Jones, the judge for this night, the President pointed out how fortunate we are to be able to call on the services of such a prominent and gifted commercial photographer. Mr. Jones explained the method by which he was judging the prints and on summing up remarked upon the quality of some of them. Dr. A. Buchanan moved a vote of thanks.

The President drew attention to the progress which the Group has made since its inception and read a letter from the Royal Photographic Society advising that the Group is now affiliated with that body. Before closing the meeting the President reminded members of the Annual Competitions and the Annual General Meeting which will be held in our new rooms in O’Connor House, Albert Street, City.

The results of the monthly competition were:

Lecture night, held on 17th November, was attended by 34 members and several visitors. The meeting was presided over by Mr. F.L. Masters and the Group again had the benefit of the experience of Mr. R. Gregory ARPS, who gave an exhibition of his beautiful color transparencies. His subject was Flowers and he very ably discussed both the photographic and botanical aspects of the display. All members really enjoyed the show and agreed that they had indeed learnt something.

Our Annual General Meeting was held on 1st December, and was attended by 31 members. The main business was the presentation of reports and the election of officers for 1953 which resulted: Patron, D. McInnes; President, F.L. Masters; Vice-President, I. Barnbaum; Secretary, R. Close; Assistant Secretary, A. Thompson; Minutes Secretary, Miss G. Filer; Treasurer, D. Smart; Publicity Officer, R. Cohen; Judges, Miss Holiday, Messrs. R. Gregory ARPS and G. Grant-Thomson ARPS. In addition to the above-mentioned office bearers we have two Print Directors, a Librarian, an Executive Committee of seven members, a Social Committee of seven, two Field Day Organizers, a Magazine Committee of six, a Disputes Committee of four and a Grading Committee.

It is expected that big things will be done in the New Year and all office bearers and members are prepared to ensure that this will be so.

BRISBANE CAMERA CLUB
At the special Breaking-up Evening, held in the new club rooms in Albert Street, Brisbane, Mr. R. Gregory ARPS, one of our judges, acted as M.C. and Professor J.V. Duhig, one of Queensland’s leading Patrons of art, presented the trophies to the winners of the annual competitions. The outstanding print was a study of hands by T.A. Scruse, which won the Trophy Award for the Print of the Year.

After the presentation of trophies, Mr. Eutrope, of Kodak Ltd., Brisbane, presented The A.P.-R. Recognition Medal Award to Mr. Garth Grant-Thomson ARPS. In thanking Mr. Eutrope for the presentation, Mr. Grant-Thomson said that he was very proud to have been awarded the medal and that he must also thank Mr. Keast Burke, Editor of The A.P.-R., for his continued encouragement and constructive criticisms, which he felt had contributed a great deal to his progress. This presentation was the highlight of the evening, as far as the members were concerned, everyone sharing in a small way the glory won by one of our fellow members.

Mr. R. Gregory next projected the trophy-winning color transparencies, after which everyone adjourned for the delightful supper prepared by our two lady members.

BRISBANE CAMERA CLUB
The first meeting for the New Year was held on 19th January, which took the form of a Camera and Gadget night and was attended by thirty members and nine visitors and was presided over by Mr. J. Barnbaum, Vice-President. This proved to be a most interesting night, and after each member had given a short talk on his camera or gadget quite some time was spent by all present inspecting the various items on display. Items shown included a home-made flash outfit made by D. McDermant, a small bracket made by A. Sealy, for use with twin lens cameras to give parallax adjustment on close-ups, and by no means the least was a home-made projector, the result of many hours of planning and hard work on the part of J. Amos, who demonstrated its capabilities.

The first Print Night was beyond our expectations, being attended by over fifty members and visitors who saw the greatest number of prints we have yet exhibited on such an occasion. The Set Subject for this month was Outdoor Night Photography Without Flash and was the cause of some sleepless nights to not a few members. Our President, Mr. F. Masters, introduced Mr. A. Kearney, Hon.Secretary of the Maryborough Camera Club, and commented on the great work being done by that club which is numerically small. Mr. Masters visited the club recently. After very great deliberation, the judges, Miss Hobday and Mr. Garth Grant-Thomson ARPS, made the following awards:
PRINT OF THE MONTH: T. Scruse;
A OPEN: 1, D. McDermant; 2, A. Buchanan and T. Scruse (equal); 3, W. Hughes.
A SET: 1, T. Scruse; 2, W. Prior; 3, A. Buchanan.
B OPEN: l, S. Smith; 2, H. Standfast.
B SET: l, I. Eldershaw; 2, A. Sealy; 3, W. Tate.

The meeting closed after all had enjoyed the supper provided by our band of very capable lady workers, led by Mrs. Murray.

BRISBANE CAMERA CLUB
On account of the weather we were unable to hold our second meeting for February. The Set Subject for March was Figure Study. This subject created considerable interest and brought forth some very fine results. Mr. F. Masters presided over an attendance of thirty-one members and six visitors, and among those present was Mr. D. Njejic, who was on the staff of U.N.O. for some time and is scheduled to give a lecture later in the year on Photography Overseas.

Our judges, Miss A. Hobday, Mr. R. Gregory ARPS, and Mr. G. Grant-Thomson ARPS, made the following awards after they had given their criticisms:
PRINT OF THE MONTH: W. Hughes.
A GRADE SET 1, W. Hughes; 2, F. Scruse; 3, W. Prior.
A GRADE OPEN: 1, W. Hughes; 2, G. Jurott; 3, T. Scruse.

BRISBANE CAMERA CLUB
The Set Subject for our Print night for April was Against the Light and it was interesting to see the manner in which the members attacked the task even if some of the results were not quite up to expectations.

There were 30 members and visitors present and our Vice-President, Mr. I. Barnbaum, took the chair. At this meeting we regrettably received a letter from our President, Mr. F. Masters, who had reluctantly been forced to tender his resignation from that office owing to other demands on his time. Mr. Masters has been President of the Club since its inception and it was with great feeling that the members heard of his decision and it was decided at this meeting to donate a trophy from club funds annually as a mark of appreciation for the work done by Mr. Masters for members individually and the club generally. This trophy will be known as the Fred Masters Club Trophy.

After the judges had deliberated for some time and given their criticisms they made the following awards:
PRINT OF THE MONTH: H. Standfast.
A GRADE OPEN: 1, D. McDermant; 2, T. Scruse, A. Buchanan (equal); 3, W. Prior.
A GRADE SET: 1, D. McDermant; 2, W, Prior; 3, T. Scruse.
B GRADE OPEN: 1, S. Smith; 2, I. Eldershaw; 3, N. Atkinson.
B GRADE SET: 1, H. Standfast; 2, A. Sealy; 3, L. Hall.

On April 20th the members were fortunate to be entertained both photographically and socially by Mr. C. McCarthy and members of his staff at Anthony Caton Studios. Mr. McCarthy went to great trouble to give a most interesting and informative demonstration on Studio Photography and was most capably assisted in this by one of the female members of his staff as a model. All present voted this one of our best evenings and considered it to have been made absolutely complete by the friendly atmosphere which prevailed and the delightfully informal supper which followed.

BRISBANE CAMERA GROUP
The meeting of the Group held on 15th June, was presided over by Mr. I. Barnbaum and was attended by 21 members and 14 visitors. Among the visitors were two from Victoria; and the President, Mr. E. Homan, and two members of the Stanthorpe Club, Messrs. H. and B. H. Milburn. Our special visitor for the evening was Mr. Toni, who has recently returned from an overseas tour of which he had a most colorful pictorial record. Mr. Toni showed quite an impressive number of color transparencies and treated those present with a very fine account of his tour of England and the Continent, and he also supplied some very interesting technical data. This particular phase of Mr. Toni’s visit was especially interesting as we have just started to organize a color group within the Club.

On 6th July, our regular Print Night was conducted and the Set Subject on this occasion was Lane, Alley or Subway. The subject matter available in Brisbane for this particular subject is somewhat limited but it was interesting to see the members approach and the results obtained. The results were:
PRINT OF THE MONTH: Dr. Buchanan.
A GRADE OPEN: 1, Dr. Buchanan; 2, D. McDermant; 3, (Equal), I. Wallis and T. Scruse.
A GRADE SET: 1, Dr. Buchanan; 2, T. Scruse; 3, D. McDermant.
B GRADE OPEN: 1, S. Greenway; 2, S. Smith.
B GRADE SET: 1, (Equal), J. Hall and A. Redlich; 2, S. Smith; 3, P. Smith.

While the judging of the prints was being conducted a ballot was held to elect a President to fill the vacancy which occurred when Mr. F.L. Masters resigned from that office recently. This resulted in Dr. A.J. Buchanan being elected, and he will occupy that office for the remainder of the year, until our next annual general meeting. After the judges had made their awards as above, the President moved a vote of thanks and the meeting closed with supper supplied by our Social Committee.

ANNUAL 35mm COLOUR SLIDES COMPETITION
This Competition will be open to all bona-fide camera club members throughout the State of Queensland and the Northern Rivers District of N.S.W. Club secretaries should obtain particulars from the Hon. Secretary, Brisbane Camera Group, O’Connor House, Albert Street, Brisbane. The competition will be divided into the following groups, Landscape, Floral, Miscellaneous.

BRISBANE CAMERA GROUP
On 20th July the Group was fortunate in having as guest lecturer, Mr. J. Hunter of May and Baker. Mr. Hunter spoke on the various aspects of his firm’s photographic products and throughout the evening answered many questions.

Our print night was held on August 3rd, and a good selection of prints were judged by two of our judges — Miss. A. Hobday, the well-known Queensland artist, and Mr. Ralph Gregory ARPS. The judges proved once again their thorough knowledge of photography as they analyzed and gave constructive criticism of the various prints. Their awards were:
GROUP A, SET SUBJECT: Entrance to Medical School at Herston: 1, Dr. A. Buchanan; 2, D. McDermant; 3, W. Pryor.
GROUP A, OPEN: 1 (Equal), I. Barnbaum and D. McDermant; 2, T. Scruse; 3, Dr. A. Buchanan.
GROUP B, SET SUBJECT: 1, S. Greenway; 2, A. Hall; 3, F. Smith.
GROUP B, OPEN: 1, R. Redlich; 2, P. Myers; 3, S. Smith.

In summing up the prints, Mr. Gregory said that rarely had he seen four prints of such outstanding technique as those exhibited in the Group A Open. The prints, a Portrait, a Character Study, a Pattern and Texture Study, and a Seascape were a credit to the respective makers and it again proves that the many helpful suggestions which the members have received from our judges in their criticism over the past months are not falling on deaf ears.

The night was concluded by a screening of the winning entries from the Color Section Competition, the winners being: Floral, J. Amos; Miscellaneous, D. Smart; Landscape, G. Fowler.

This year, our Annual 35mm Color Transparency Competition will be open to all bona-fide Camera Club members throughout Queensland and the Northern Rivers District of N.S.W.; and Club Secretaries are invited to contact our Hon.Secretary, Mr. Ron Close, for further particulars.

BRISBANE CAMERA GROUP
On 17th August our scheduled lecture was to be a discussion on the prints exhibited in the recent Royal National Exhibition, given by the official judge of the R.N.A., Mr. H.A. Snape ARPS. Mr. Snape, a member of Kodak’s Brisbane staff, unfortunately could not carry out the lecture owing to the sudden illness of his wife. This was explained to the members on on their arrival at the Club, and Miss A. Hobday volunteered to give an impromptu lecture on Negative Retouching. In view of the fact that Miss Hobday had no time to prepare the lecture, the discussion that followed was excellent—but then, what Miss Hobday does not know about retouching is not worth knowing. The many members present asked numerous questions which were all answered thoroughly by Miss Hobday, and their appreciation was shown in the usual manner.

Our September print night was on the 7th, and this month’s set subject was Smoke, Fog, Mist or Rain. Following are the results;
A GRADE SET: 1, T. Scruse; 2 (Equal), W. Prior and D. McDermant.
A GRADE OPEN: 1, D. McDermant; 2, T. Scruse; 3, F. Wallis.
B GRADE SET: 1, L. Hall; 2 (Equal), N. Atkinson and Miss P, Smith.
B GRADE OPEN: 1, L. Hall; 2, S. Greenway; 3, S. Smith.

It was pleasing to note that B Graders “put it all over” the A Graders this month, in both the number of prints exhibited and the fact that a B GRADER, Mr. Hall, took the honors for the PRINT OF THE MONTH.

Thursday 22nd October 1953  Page 6 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, Queensland)

A meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society was presided over by Mr Bill Cardy in the absence of the President (Mr Allen Griffiths), who with the Secretary attended a meeting of the Brisbane Camera Group on behalf of the society. Committee member, Mr Ern Wright was to have been with them but was confined to his bed. All members hope he will soon be fully recovered. Mr Morrie Gee was welcomed as a new member. The society expressed delight that Dr. Hamilton Stuart Patterson had accepted its invitation to become its Patron. Sincere thanks was tendered to a member, Mr Sid Hucker, for work for and gifts to the society.

STILL LIFE
The highlight of the meeting was a competition on "Still Life". This is a very difficult subject for the amateur, but the work produced was of a high standard for such a young club. Ern. Wright took first honors with a beautiful print. Bill Cardy was second and Les Bowling third. The prints were analyzed for some 45 minutes by members with criticism and compliments given and taken in true club spirit. After the competition a number of color transparencies were screened. They proved of great interest to members as they are the entries of some of society members in an exhibition to be staged by the Brisbane Camera Group. The feeling was expressed that at least one entry may bring distinction to the society as well as satisfaction to the owner. The society will visit the Brisbane Camera Group on November 2 and would like all members to make an effort to be there. The group will hold a competition on Flower Study, which should prove both interesting and entertaining. Members cars will be available so please meet in front of Cribb and Foote's in Bell Street not later than 6.45pm. Booval and East Ipswich members will be picked up at the Fiveways. Please inform the President or Secretary if you can come so that transport can be arranged. At Mr Bill Cardy's residence, Eastern Heights, tomorrow week, the draw will be made and color transparencies screened. If you can give a 10 minutes show bring your's along. Please meet cars at W. Cook and Co. in East Street at 7.20. It was the general expression on Monday night that meetings are getting better and more interesting. The society would like anyone therefore who is interested in photography to come along and share these good times.

BRISBANE CAMERA GROUP
On 21st September, our scheduled lecture Photography Overseas by Mr. D. Njejic, had to be postponed. In place of the lecture we had our General Discussion Night when everybody present discussed 'anything and everything'.

Suggestions were put forward for next year’s competitions and it was heartily agreed to have more subjects of a particular nature, in the form of an exercise, to enable members to show their own treatment of the same subject. One competition of this nature held during the year proved very keen and it was interesting to note the various approaches which the competitors made of the subject.

October’s competition, Landscape and Seascape again brought the 'B' Graders to the fore with both quality and quantity. The results were:
A GRADE SET: 1, D. McDermant; 2, T. Scruse; 3, W. Pryor.
A GRADE OPEN: 1, D. McDermant; 2, W. Pryor; 3, T. Scruse.
B GRADE SET: 1, A.L. Smith; 2, J. Cassidy; 3, S. Greenway.
B GRADE OPEN: 1, A.L. Smith; 2 (Equal), S. Smith and L. Hall.
PRINT OF THE MONTH: A.L. Smith.

Mr. Garth Grant-Thompson ARPS, one of our judges, brought along a selection of prints to show us, as he put it, ‘before the club members got to the stage of being better than the judges', but Mr. Grant-Thompson can rest assured that that day is in the distant future. A half-dozen prints were shown, every one of a salon quality that would be a credit to Australia if they were exhibited overseas. It was an exceptionally nice gesture by Mr. Grant-Thompson and the members showed their appreciation by a round of applause.

Wednesday 4th November 1953  Page 6 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, Queensland)

CAMERA CLUB VISIT TO BRISBANE
The Ipswich Photography Society suspended its usual meeting last Monday night and visited the headquarters of the Brisbane Camera Group. While the group got down to matters of club business, the Ipswich members gathered around Messr. Ralph Gregory and Grant Thompson who were judging the monthly competition on flower study. The judges explained their decisions to the Ipswich members and invited questions or comment. After listening to an analysis by the two judges and enjoying refreshments, the Ipswich members left for home feeling the visit had been really worthwhile. Last Friday night a show of Kodachrome transparencies was put on at the home of Bill Cardy by society members Allen Griffiths, Les Bowling, Des Sullivan and Graham Heslop.

LOCAL SUCCESS
At least one society member, Ern Wright, is branching out into wider fields of competition with some success. He entered a portrait in the October competition of "Photography", the national magazine for amateur photographers and gained the highly commended prize. All members congratulate him and hope he goes on to even bigger success. The next meeting will be on Monday. November 16, at 7.30, when a competition on the results of the outing to College's Crossing will be the main event. More interest has been built into this event by the offer of the Brisbane Camera Group to send two from their panel of judges to judge the work entered. The committee would like any member who did not attend the outing and who may have prints of any other nature, to bring them along for inclusion in an open section and hear what the judges have to say about them. In this way there is so much to be learnt, so get busy on those prints and lets have a bumper entry. The committee invites visitors, prospective members and friends to come along that night to the Mining and Hardware Chambers, Brisbane Street.

BRISBANE CAMERA GROUP
On 19th October, three of our members brought along their own color slides, and the various transparencies shown to some 30 odd members proved most interesting. Mr. J.E. Vautier projected a number of Kodachromes taken on his recent return visit to New Zealand and described each view with the help of a very well prepared script. At the members request, he then ran all the slides through again and answered numerous questions about the various shots of the New Zealand countryside.

Mr. Ralph De Vries also showed his slides, some being of his native Holland and others taken since his arrival in Australia. Even though some transparencies were of a more personal nature, showing scenes from his family life, they proved most interesting to all. Mr. De Vries showed a number of black-and-white slides made by himself, and explained in easy-to-follow steps the procedure adopted in processing them.

Finally, Mr. G. Fowler showed his Kodachromes taken while holidaying in Victoria, and also various shots in and around Brisbane. The members present, through their various questions, showed their keen interest throughout the evening.

We had, as guests, the President and Secretary of the Ipswich Camera Club, Messrs. Alan L. Griffiths and L. A. Johnston, together with club member R. Bietram. Their visit was followed by a visit of 17 members of the Ipswich Camera Club on November 2nd. On that night our guests were invited to see our judges, Mr. Ralph Gregory ARPS, and Mr. Garth Grant-Thomson ARPS, judge the prints entered in our November contest Flowers while the Brisbane Club members carried out their regular meeting. The awards for the month were:
PRINT OF THE MONTH: A.L. Smith.
SET COMPETITION: A GRADE: 1, T. Scruse; 2, D. McDermant; 3, W. Pryor.
SET COMPETITION: B GRADE: 1, A.L. Smith; 2, L. Hall; 3, S. Smith.
OPEN COMPETITION: A GRADE: 1, T. Scruse; 2, D. McDermant; 3, W. Pryor.
OPEN COMPETITION: B GRADE: 1, S. Smith; 2, A. Sealy; 3, Mrs. J. Bennett.

For the third time in succession a 'B' Grader again took the honors with the Print of the Month.

Next year two of our most consistent A Grade prize winners, T. Scruse and D. McDermant, will be deputy judges and as a result will retire from regular monthly contests. We hope to gain in many ways by their sound knowledge of making exhibition prints, and it will be a considerable help to our present judges who may, on occasions, find it difficult to attend a meeting.

We now have only one more meeting before our annual ‘Breaking up Night' when the Inter-Club Color Contest will be shown.

Wednesday 18th November 1953  Page 3 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, Queensland)

The Ipswich Photography Society had an attendance of 27 members and a record entry of 18 prints in the monthly competition on the outing to College's Crossing. Along with this set subject an open competition was staged for all members, which had an entry of 19 prints. This open event will be held along with the set subject every month. Visitors to the meeting on Monday night in the Mining and Hardware Chambers were Dr. A.J. Buchanan (president). Messrs. G.B. Fowler, Tom Loruse and Duncan McDemant (all of the Brisbane Camera Group), who acted as judges for the joint competition. Local visitors were Mr Dick Braithwaite, who donated £1/1/- to the winning entry on the set subject and Mr H. Walker. The judges had a very difficult task with such a large entry. The winner of the set subject was Les Bowling, second and third went to Ern Wright. First and second placings in the open section again went to Ern. Third place in the open was taken by Bill Cardy. Dr. Buchanan had an informal chat with the members concerning activities behind the scenes photographically. Most interesting was the formation of a Queensland federation of photography, which it is hoped will be preceded by the word "Royal", when that permission can be obtained. With the progress of the Ipswich society it is felt that it will be able to take an active part in these affairs. A new member welcomed to the club was Mr M. Schuster. A vote of thanks was accorded the Judges and the rest of the visitors by President Allen Griffiths, supported by Mr Bill Cardy. It is hoped that the next fortnightly meeting will take the form of a showing of the year's best transparencies, loaned to the society by Kodak Ltd.

NEW ADDRESS FOR CAMERA ENTHUSIASTS
The Ipswich Photography Society has expanded to such an extent that it has been necessary to find new headquarters. The club has moved to the C.W.A. Hall, where all future meetings will be held. At a meeting in the hall this week a showing of transparencies from a competition held by the Brisbane Camera Group was staged. Included in the 18 chosen were slides by two Ipswich members, Messrs. Allen Griffiths and Graham Heslop. Congratulations were offered to them. Highlight of the evening, which was among the best meetings held to date, was an informal talk by Press photographer Bill Sneyd. Bill began by telling of his early efforts in photography and how he graduated to newspaper work. He related some of his experiences with a Press camera, which proved most interesting. Two Graflex cameras were among the equipment Bill brought along and most members were very interested in them. To conclude he screened a film he had made depicting the various processes a photograph went through from the time the camera clicked until the paper was received into the home. A vote of thanks to Mr Sneyd was proposed by Bill Cardy and supported by Ern Wright. The next meeting will take the form of a competition on child study, along with the usual open subject. The society has again extended an invitation to prospective members, particularly any ladies interested in photography, to attend meetings. In future meetings will be held on Tuesday nights instead of Monday nights as previously.

BRISBANE CAMERA GROUP
Members were privileged to view the “Fifty-six Best” color slides from the Third A.P.-R. Kodachrome Contest on 16th November. Messrs. J. Geddes and H. Snape. of Kodak’s Brisbane Store, projected the slides.

After the slides had been put through twice, the Kodak representatives were asked many questions regarding the duplicating process and color generally, and the evening closed with a hearty vote of thanks from all present. The Club’s thanks also go to the A.P.-R. for allowing us to see for the first time the cream of the entries in the contest, and our sympathy is extended to the judge, who, we trust, is now over the headache he would have had in deciding the winners.

Our Annual Meeting was held on 7th December for the purpose of electing the office-bearers for 1954. Our Patron is once again Mr. D. Mclnnes, and popular Dr. A. Buchanan was re-elected as President. The very busy job of Hon. Secretary is held by Mr. A. Thompson who proved, when Assistant Secretary last year, that he will be right in his element in this position; Senior and Junior Vice-Presidents are Messrs. I. Barnbaum and R. Close; and the Treasurer for the year is Mr. W. Prior, who, being a police sergeant, should have no trouble in rounding up the fees from the members.

The Annual “Breaking-up”, held on 14th December, again proved an outstanding success. Mr. Ralph Gregory ARPS, projected the prizewinning Kodachromes from the First Annual Inter-Club Competition, and this proved very popular with the twenty-three visitors and thirty-seven members present. Mr. Gregory made the projection very interesting by explaining the method he adopted in selecting the winners, and by comparing the various slides and showing how composition was improved with some by reversing the picture. He also gave constructive criticism on some of the prints, but left the portraits to our other judge, Mr. Garth Grant-Thomson ARPS, who specializes in this field of photography.

The prizewinners for 1953 were presented with their trophies by Mr. R. Haines, Director of the Queensland National Art Gallery. Mr. Haines spoke very highly of photography as an art and said he was amazed that such talent existed in Brisbane as was shown in the winning prints exhibited that night, and it was encouraging to see our members expressing their artistic sense through the medium of the camera. Mr. Haines also said that photography was akin to art but, unfortunately, unlike the artist, we were restricted in many ways; but, on the other hand, photography could teach the artist many things.

We are moving into new rooms for 1954 and our location will be the Geographical Society Hall, Ann Street, Brisbane. A very hearty welcome is extended to new members. As our new rooms will allow us more scope for our activities, our syllabus, which is in the process of being drawn up, holds some very interesting and informative nights.

On 25th January, Mr. Louis Hoffman gave us a personal movie show taken on his recent trip to the International Jamboree abroad.

We are looking forward to 22nd February, when it is proposed to screen The Nation’s Tribute to Harold Cazneaux.

Owing to the President (Mr Allen Griffiths) still being on holidays, the chair was again taken by Mr Bill Cardy at the meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society this week. It was announced that half yearly subscriptions were due and members are reminded that they must be financial to compete. The committee wants all members to make at least one print to enter in the portrait competition for the next meeting in three weeks time. These prints, by the way, will not be judged that night although an informal analysis of them will be staged. After the meeting they will be despatched to Mr Garth Grant Thomson for judging. He will return them to the club at the following meeting, giving full remarks and placings on each print along with a practical demonstration on how to go about taking a portrait. This should prove a very interesting evening as members, too will have an opportunity to set up and try themselves out. At least two models will be available, so bring along your cameras and equipment. The usual open competition will be staged as well at the next meeting. The syllabus for 1954-55 was read out to members and it is a very interesting one. It will be printed soon and handed out so that all concerned may take the opportunity of taking the shots as they present themselves. After the business of the society had been dealt with a show of color transparencies was put on. The first half was taken up with the work of Mr George Fowler, of the Brisbane Camera Group, to whom a vote of thanks was tendered by Mr Cliff Venning. This work was taken in Tasmania and was very fine. It was followed by an excellent showing by a club member, Mr Roy Bartram, taken around the Murray River and Adelaide. Dick Braithwaite was present and was responsible for the loan of the slide lantern.

On 22nd February, Messrs. H. Snape and J. Geddes of Kodak, Brisbane presented the tape-recorded Tribute to Harold Cazneaux. The slides were very well presented, and to hear 'Caz' giving personal criticism of his own work was a very interesting experience. The showing of the selection of slides took up the whole of the evening and it is suggested that other Clubs endeavor to obtain these remarkable Pages of History, for much will be gained from the description of the reproductions by 'Caz' and Monte Luke. Our thanks go to Kodak Ltd. for allowing us the use of their equipment together with the Sydney Camera Circle presentation.

During February our monthly contest was Clouds and this month’s competition, held on March 1st, was Child Study. The awards for February were:

Mr. D. McDermant gave the Group a lecture on Portrait Lighting on March 22nd. Readers no doubt are following with interest Mr. McDermant’s articles which are at present running in the A.P.-R. on Portrait Lighting. On the night of the lecture he had the assistance of two models. Using three lights on his subjects, he explained the various planes of the human face and how the action of light casts the right and wrong shadows. Members present showed their keen interest throughout the night, and some who brought cameras along arranged the lights on the plan outlined by Mr. McDermant and “shot” the two models. We should now see some really good work presented in our new Portrait Section.

April 5th was the night of the Competition Industrial, (New Farm Park). The awards were:
A GRADE, SET: 1, A. Sealy; 2, W. Prior; 3, G. Searle.
A GRADE, OPEN: 1, G. Varcados; 2, A. Buchanan; 3, A. Sealy.
B GRADE, SET: 1, Mrs. E. Bennett.

FLORAL: T. Scruse.

Thirty-nine members and three visitors had a thoroughly enjoyable night.

The Set Subject for our May competition was Hands, and once again a B Grader took the coveted honors for the Print of the Month. K. O’Halloran’s print, depicting a pair of hands with a needle removing a splinter, showed excellent planning and technique. The results were;
SET SUBJECT — A GRADE: 1, L. Hall; 2, A. Smith.
B GRADE: 1, K. O’Halloran; 2, J.E. Vautier; 3, Mrs. I. Nicol.
OPEN — A GRADE : 1, W. Prior; 2, G. Varcados; 3, L. Hall.
B GRADE: 1, K. O’Halloran; 2, J.E. Vautier; 3, S.A. Greenway.
PORTRAIT SECTION: 1, J.E. Vautier; 2, S.A. Greenway; 3, K. Woodrow.

On May 24th members were shown the “tricks of the trade” in a very interesting demonstration on enlarging by Mr. Tom Scruse. Mr. Scruse is one of our judges, and his talk proved most helpful to both advanced workers and beginners when he explained his methods of dodging, etc. Our thanks also go to Messrs. C.T. Lorenz for making some equipment available for the lecture. Dr. A. Buchanan, our resident, made a chance remark about photographic chemistry during the night, and as a result he was “roped-in” to answer a few questions. Before long, however, the answers developed into a short lecture which proved very interesting, so much so that Dr. Buchanan is now scheduled to give a lecture on Photographic Chemistry in the very near future.

Our Monthly Competition Marine, Brisbane River Area, on June 7th, resulted in a win for a B Grader. Mrs. Nicol, winner of the Print of the Month, had not been doing any serious work until just recently, and there were some red faces among the A Graders when one of our judges, Mr. Garth Grant-Thomson ARPS, pointed out how the B Graders were running away with the prizes. The complete results were:
A GRADE, SET: 1, I. Barnbaum; 2, L. G. Hall.
B GRADE, SET: 1, Mrs. I. Nicol; 2, J. E. Vautier; 3, Mrs. E. Bennett.
A GRADE, OPEN: 1. No Award; 2, W. Prior; 3, L. Hall.
B GRADE, OPEN: 1, No Award; 2, Mrs. E. Bennett; 3, J.E. Vautier. PORTRAIT: 1, J.E. Vautier; 2, S. Smith; 3, W. Prior.

The attendance of 37 members and 7 visitors was very gratifying, especially with the cold weather breaking all records; but there are still plenty of spare chairs and new members and visitors are most welcome.

FIRST ANNUAL SHOW A BIG SUCCESS
The first annual competition of the Ipswich Photography Society was held in the C.W.A. Hall last Saturday and proved a big success in every way. Prints displayed totaled 104, giving the Judges a very busy time during the afternoon. The evening proved a delightful one for the members and friends present, distinguished guests including the Mayor and Mayoress (Ald. and Mrs J.T. Finimore), Dr. Buchanan, Secretary of the Photographic Society of Queensland and President of the Brisbane Camera Group; Dr. S. Patterson, Patron of the Ipswich Photography Society, Mr H.A. Snape, of Kodak (Australasia) Pty. Ltd., Mr L. Scruse, of C.T. Lorenz Ltd., other members of the Brisbane Camera Group and the judges, Mr Ralph Gregory, President of the Queensland Photographic Society and Mr Garth Grant Thomson. The President of the Ipswich Photography Society (Mr Allen Griffiths) spoke on the aims and accomplishments of the society and introduced the Mayor, who was appreciative of the work presented and expressed a desire to help in any way.

The set subject for July was Glassware and this proved to be very intriguing. Entrants approached the subject from a different angle and the standard of prints was very high.

The Print of the Month was awarded to A Grader Squadron-Leader L. Hall with his print of a crystal decanter and glass while the B Grade winner, J.E. Vautier, submitted a fine print using medical glassware as his subject material. A novel and well-exposed shot by another B Grader, K. O’Halloran, was that of empty milk bottles on a step. Complete results were:
A GRADE, OPEN; 1, L. Hall; 2, W. Pryor; 3, A. Smith.
B GRADE, OPEN: 1, J.E. Vautier; 2, R. Fischer; 3, S.A. Greenway.
A GRADE, SET: 1, L. Hall (Print of the Month); 2, A. Sealy; 3, W. Pryor.
B GRADE, SET: 1, J.E. Vautier; 2, K. O’Hollaran; 3, Miss E. Bennett.
PORTRAITS: 1, J. E. Vautier; 2, L. Hall; 3, W. Pryor.

Member J. E. Vautier was heartily congratulated on achieving three firsts in the one night; and the examples from their own private collections shown by two of our judges, Mr. Duncan McDermant and Mr. Tom Scruse, were very much appreciated.

The prizewinning transparencies of the Color Competition were shown by our judge, Mr. Ralph Gregory ARPS, on July 26th. The awards were:
LANDSCAPE: 1, Miss J. Crenley; 2, G. Fowler; 3, W. Smit; 4, F. Wallis.
FLORAL: 1, R. Fischer; 2, R. Fischer; 3, J. Amos; 4, J. Smit.
MISCELLANEOUS: 1, Dr. A. Buchanan; 2, G. Varcados; 3, W. Smit; 4, F. Wallis.

Mr. Gregory projected all the slides entered in the competition, pointing out the various faults with each. Afterwards he showed a selection of transparencies exposed on his recent trip to Port Moresby and this, together with an excellent commentary, was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

Print competition night on August 2nd was attended by quite a large gathering, but the Set Subject Animal or Bird within the Botannical Gardens seemed to have proved rather difficult, judging by the number of prints entered.

Print of the Month was awarded to Alan Sealy for his picture of black swans. Complete results were:
A GRADE, SET: 1, A. Sealy; 2, L. Hall; 3, W. Pryor.
A GRADE, OPEN:1, L. Hall; 2, W. Pryor; 3, F. Wallis.
B GRADE, SET: 1, K. Anderson; 2, A. Thompson; 3, K. O’Halloran.
B GRADE, OPEN: 1, A.L. Smith; 2, J.E. Vautier; 3, Mrs. J. Bennett.
PORTRAITS: 1, K. Anderson; 2 (Equal), J.E. Vautier and A. Smith.

B Grader K. Anderson, winner of the Portrait Section, was congratulated on an excellent shot taken from the wings of the theatre during a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream under existing theatre lighting.

Brisbane Camera Group members came to the fore by securing many prizes in the photographic section of the Royal National Show, which opened on August 5th. Mr. H. Snape ARPS, a well known member of the Kodak Brisbane staff, was again the judge and his task was not an enviable one. Mrs. Jess Bennett, a constant prizewinner in club competitions, secured two firsts, three seconds, a third and two prints were very high commended. T. Scruse was awarded a first, three seconds and a third and had a print very highly commended. A. Sealy received a first and two thirds and was very highly commended for two prints. Sqd. Leader L.G. Hall (R.A.A.F.) won three thirds and two of his prints were very highly commended. W. Pryor also was awarded a second placing. Our hearty congratulations are extended to all of these prize winners.

Twenty-eight members and two visitors watched with interest Mr. Duncan McDermant explain the pros and cons of good print-finishing on August 23rd. Mr. McDermant brought along two prints, one untouched and the other finished ready for exhibition. The vast difference and improvement were readily seen and, after explaining the various processes, “Mac” then proceeded to bring the un-retouched print to somewhere near salon standard in the short time at his disposal. After such an excellent demonstration (and the fact that Mr. McDermant is one of our judges) we feel sure that print-finishing by club members will be improved out of sight.

Our monthly competition Character Study was judged on September 6th, but, unfortunately, some of the entries had to be transferred from this section to Portrait as, in the opinion of the judges, they were not subjects in character. The awards were:
A GRADE SET: 1, S.J. Smith.
B GRADE SET: 1, J.E. Vautier; 2, E. Mooney.
A GRADE OPEN: 1, S.J. Smith; 2, G. Varcados; 3, L. Hall.

FOR ART PANEL

"Autumn Vista" by Miss Augusta F.I. Hobday

Miss Augusta F.I. Hobday, whose watercolor, "Autumn Vista", Birkdale is the new picture for the "Brisbane Telegraph" art panel, belongs to a family, which for more than half a century was associated continuously with the Royal Queensland Art Society and other cultural activities in Queensland.

She herself studied at the Central Technical College Art School with the late R. Godfrey Rivers and her father, the late J. Mayall Hobday, who had a sound training in English schools.

Miss Hobday is an honorary life member of the Royal Queensland Art Society and one of the judges of the Brisbane Camera Group. She still conducts her own studio, which was founded in 1909.

Her brother, the late P. Stanhope Hobday, and her sister, the late Mrs. Gladys Powell, were formerly associated with her in her activities.

"Autumn Vista" has been lent by its owners, Captain and Mrs. J.G.W. Bullock.

Our judge, Mr. Ralph Gregory ARPS, presented the second half of his interesting New Guinea tour on October 27th. After the showing of the earlier slides, word got round of the excellence of the production, and, as a result, we had a record 25 visitors present. This, together with 32 members, almost taxed our seating accommodation and the night was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mr. Gregory presented the slides in travelogue form and his excellent commentary, which is always ad lib, showed us some of the many facets available with Kodachrome and electronic flash.

October’s monthly competition was "LANDSCAPE", and the awards were;
A GRADE; SET SUBJECT: 1, L. Hall; 2, G. Varcados; 3, W. Pryor.
A GRADE; OPEN: 1, W. Pryor; 2 (Equal), S.J. Smith, G. Varcados, and L. Hall.

The 32 members and four visitors listened to excellent criticism by the various judges, and our congratulations go to Mrs. Bennett, a B Grader, for winning the Print of the Month. The Quarterly Color Slide Competition was also presented, the winners being:
LANDSCAPE: G. Fowler.
FLORAL: P. Myers.

Members, accompanied by friends and families, totaled over sixty and Old Sol even smiled on us for it was the first fine Sunday in twelve weekends. The children both “big” and small made short work of the refreshments provided.

Monday night, 1st November, was our final print night for the year and the Set Subject was “Men at Work”.

The following are the list of awards:

HER MODELS WERE 14 'HOPPERS

Left to Right: "That's not cricket, sir!" : "Ho( p )spitality" : "Duet in slumber" : "Who done it?"

By MARY COLES, staff reporter
A photographer who had never used a camera until four years ago has already become a champion at table-top photography.

SHE is Miss Phyl Jarrott, of Brisbane, winner for the past two years of the story section of the Brisbane Camera Group annual competition.

Her first success was an imaginative treatment of the Story of Creation, detailing six epochs from the beginning of time until today.

She got magnificent effects by photographing white wax and cardboard models with light projected through out-of-focus color transparencies.

Her second win was a series on a "highly civilized" family of grasshoppers, four of which are reproduced on this page.

Miss Jarrott used a cast of 14 grasshoppers and props made by her nephew, agricultural scientist Ken Moir.

IDEAL RELAXATION
Grasshoppers were Miss Jarrett's first experience with "live artists". While she worked they lived in a cardboard box with perforated holes.

She anesthetized them with brief spells in a glass screw top jar containing cotton-wool sprinkled with chloroform, and fixed their poses with cellulose tape.

Miss Jarrott, a pay clerk with an insurance firm, finds table-top photography an ideal way of relaxing after a busy day.

"And it is much more convenient to capture a sunrise scene at night after a good dinner, experimenting with novel lighting effects on white wax, than to get up before the crack of dawn", she said.

"And photographing china ducks swimming in a make believe pool on the dining room table is less frustrating than trying to make real ducks 'hold' a good composition in a real pond".

Her sister, Miss Jean Jarrott, said: "The whole household is disrupted when Phyl is in a creative mood. "Sometimes the dining table is littered with props for a week when she is on location".
