CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
FIRST ANNUAL MEETING
Thursday night at 8pm at Comino's Cafe will see the first annual general meeting of the Cairns Camera Club. The formation of this club aims at bringing together all those interested in photography and advancing the standard of their technical work, and at the same time promoting the feeling of fellowship among its members.

The club intends to cater for both still and cine camera enthusiasts and to hold meetings fortnightly where lectures on processing and finishing will be given, with demonstrations, and a print criticism offered. It is hoped that all those interested in photography will endeavor to be present, and thus assist in furthering a movement that will aid the advancement of amateur photography as a science and art.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
FIRMLY ESTABLISHED
During the last month the most active of our amateur photographers in this city have, after considerable preparation, established the Cairns Camera Club. This is an entirely new organization, and, so far, has received most enthusiastic support from its foundation members, who are comprised, of both still and motion picture workers.

The aim of this new club is to bring together all those genuinely interested in photography as a hobby, so that they may advance the standard of their individual work, and, incidentally, to encourage the beginners to something more than mere "snapshotting". In the future, the club intends to arrange camera outings for its members, and to encourage contests not only among club members, but also with other clubs. Eventually, it is hoped to be able to equip a small dark-room and studio for club use.

An inaugural meeting was called early in March, and from those 20 in attendance the officers and a board of management for 1941 were elected.

Captain C. Jones was elected president of the club, and will be assisted by Miss M. Stuart as secretary and Mr. W.H. Goddard in the capacity of treasurer. Mr. A. Boorman will act as vice-president. It was decided to hold the regular club meetings at fortnightly intervals, and the first of these meetings took place at St John's Club House, next to the Church of England, in Lake-street, on Monday 24th March.

The serious activities of the club commenced with a picture on elementary photography, by Mr. R.B. Williams. The speaker explained the development of photography from as early as the 16th century up to the present time. Mr. Williams then discussed a point of great importance to the beginners in this splendid hobby, namely, the function of lenses and their various apertures. At the conclusion of this talk. Mr. A.B. Cummings presented part of his collection of motion picture in color. Mr. Cummings explained to members the equipment and method employed in the production of his undersea pictures from the Barrier Reef, and during the screening he gave a most interesting commentary. At the request of the members the films were projected a second time. Mr. Cummings also gave the cine enthusiasts a considerable amount of advice in connection with their branch of the hobby.

On Monday night Mr. John Houghton will discuss with members the problems which usually accompany successful exposure. In addition, a talk entitled, "Introduction to elementary pictorialism" will be delivered.

For the last meeting a G.A. Kodascope projector was kindly lent to the club by Messrs. Kodak Ltd.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
INSTRUCTIVE TALK
Since the publication of the last club notes, the second of this organization's regular fortnightly meetings has been held with promising success. The business of the meeting was dispensed with as soon as possible to enable the lecturer of the evening, Mr. John Houghton, to deliver the first portion of his talk. Mr. John Houghton gave a most interesting and instructive talk on "Exposure Problems", factors which influence successful photography from the technical point of view. The use of some form of exposure calculator was suggested and the merits of several different forms were discussed. The speaker also explained the use of photo-electric exposure meters and gave several examples of their successful application. This talk was concluded with a discussion of members individual practical problems. The next lecture was also given by Mr. John Houghton, and this time photography was considered from the point of view of art, in a discussion on "Elementary Pictorialism". This difficult subject was treated in such a way as to contain much valuable and practical, information, both for the beginners and the advanced members of the club, and Mr. John Houghton illustrated his points with some very pleasing examples of his own work, including two Bromoils of particular note.

To-night a demonstration of developing process will be given, for the benefit of the less advanced workers. It must be remembered that the beginners are entitled to as much consideration, if not more, as the seniorworkers, and so an attempt is being made to arrange the meetings to include both classes.

For the cine followers, a screening of amateur movies will be presented at the next meeting. Any intending members and visitors are most welcome to these meetings and the club extends an invitation to attend, even if they can take no active part in the hobby.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
OUTING THIS SUNDAY
Since the formation of the Cairns Camera Club the members have been awaiting with interest and anticipation the arrangement of one of the much discussed outings, and since last meeting have been preparing for the first Camera Club "expedition" to be held this Sunday. Although this will be an all-day trip it has been decided to confine the outing to reasonable limits and it will be in the form of a hike in the familiar "gap" just across the Cairns Inlet Several times last year short trips were made across by several members, and the area seemed to present very favorable possibilities in the photographic field. The only difficulty is presented by the crossing of the inlet, and so the club has arranged for the party to be conveyed across by the launch Manly on the morning trip to Brown's Bay. On the boats return trip in the evening she will call for the party and the only necessary expense of the trip will be one shilling for the boat fee.

It was decided that the most satisfactory way to overcome the problem of lunch would be for each member to provide his own refreshment. A haversack should prove least inconvenient for this purpose. At midday the party will be able to "boil the billy" at a convenient place. Although the trip is by no means long or rough it would be advisable to wear serviceable clothes and good walking shoes.

To make this first outing a success all members are requested to bring visitors, and, of course, those who are interested in the hobby or even in hiking will be most welcome, although for the benefit of the latter the conversation is not likely to digress from the one topic - photography.

All members of this party are asked to meet at the wharf on Sunday morning.

At the last club meeting a demonstration lecture on practical development was given by A.N. Boorman. The process was explained through all its stages from loading the tank to drying the finished film, and proved most instructive. It will be appreciated that a practical explanation is a most valuable addition to any talk.

Following Mr. Boorman's lecture a screening of part of Mr. G. Blom's collection of 9.5mm, Cine collection was given and included some admirable examples of animation and time lapse photography with an amusing theme. It might be mentioned that Mr. Blom even goes to the extent of processing his own film.

As the next meeting is on Monday night next at St John's Club Hall a discussion on the outing will be deferred till the following meeting, and the greater portion of the evening will be occupied by Mr. John Houghton's demonstration of enlarging technique. In addition a show of members prints would be appreciated at this meeting.

Incidentally Sunday's outing will definitely be governed by the week-end weather conditions.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
Despite the present national difficulties the Cairns Camera Club appears to be flourishing, and the decision to arrange excursions is likely to be most productive of useful and interesting results.

Like the Cairns Alpine Club, it has embarked on a hiking program, and it is announced that an excursion across Trinity Inlet to Glen Boughton is being arranged. Armed with cameras, many unusual and perhaps valuable photographs - still as well at cinematographic - are sure to be obtained, and as some members are naturalists as well, many biological and topographical features should be well represented. It seems a fact that many far less interesting places in other climes are much better known than those in North Queensland, chiefly for the reason that they have been more intensely studied, regarding their photographic possibility, and it seems wonderful that there are artists with pen, brush and camera who can make the most desolate of places thrilling by their accounts and illustrations. Now is the special opportunity of the Cairns Camera Club to do the same in these parts.

CAIRNS SHOW
PHOTOGRAPHY

This year, the photography classes in the Fine Arts and Crafts Section of the Cairns Show should have increased entries over the previous years. A Cairns Camera Club has recently been formed, and the show will afford members an opportunity to display the results of their activities before the public, and some very fine local amateur photography should be exhibited. Mr. H. Chargois FRPS, F.R.S.A., has been appointed judge of the photography section, and the association is fortunate in having obtained the services of so competent a judge.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
INTERESTING LECTURE
Judging by the attendance at the last meeting of the Cairns Camera Club, it seems that photography is gradually being regarded as a most interesting pastime, and is not such a maze of technicalities after all. In fact, it appears that most people with an artistic learning find, that having mastered the main points of pictorialism, it is of no great difficulty to absorb sufficient working knowledge of the hobby to enable them to "try their hand" with quite pleasing results. On Monday, Mr. John Houghton, who lectured previously on pictorialism, continued the club's series of processing talks, by demonstrating in a most practical manner the fundamentals of enlarging. The enlarger and its function was described in detail, and the speaker elaborated on the use of various pieces of darkroom equipment, as well as explaining the various types of printing paper, while proceeding with the actual work of enlarging. During the lecture, Mr. John Houghton was busy answering numbers of questions relating to members own problems. Altogether, the evening was regarded as most successful and instructive by both members and visitors.

For the meeting on Monday night, it has been arranged for Mr. G. Blom to give a talk entitled, "Toning", and the club expects to be able to present a screening of a very interesting film, "Isle of Dreams", photographed in color by the Townsville Camera Club.

Regarding the intended outing on May ll, it must be appreciated that conditions were most unfavorable on that day for any such activities. However, the club deemed it advisable to arrange another outing as soon as possible, and as the area surrounding, the Barron River at Kamerunga present very favorable possibilities for the club pictorialists, the members are taking the 9.20 rail motor to Redlynch tomorrow morning. A member has kindly volunteered to convey the party from Redlynch station to the river and arrangements have been made for the return trip.

Those attending this outing are taking their own refreshments, and in case of any misunderstanding, the whole party will assemble at Kamerunga crossing at about 10am.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
MOVIE PRESENTATION
The most, outstanding feature of the club's varied activities in recent weeks was the presentation of a movie production made during the last year by the Townsville Camera Club, titled "Isle of Dreams", with its sequel, "Pearls of Popay". The film was photographed in color and produced entirely by members of that progressive club. The Townsville Club's literary and artistic talent was responsible for the scenario and amusing dialog and the cast may possibly boast a future Academy winner - who knows? The film, about 1000 feet of 16mm Kodachrome, was screened at the Cairns Camera Club meeting and received most hearty applause from a large attendance. Our neighboring club is to be congratulated on a splendid piece of work, and they might be warned that the blood of some Cairns ardent cine workers has been roused and results might be forthcoming.

It will be remembered that the club's last outing was scheduled for Sunday 24th May, the day before last meeting. Unfortunately the weather on that particular day left much to be desired, but some nine brave photographers ventured forth to Kamerunga. On account of the extreme dampness, both underfoot and overhead, picture taking was greatly restricted, but a fair number of possibilities were noted. The outing eventually resolved itself into a strenuous mountaineering expedition in the rain and the party climbed by devious ways to Stoney Creek Station, where they were able to have lunch in comfort. The afternoon rail motor brought the party home to Cairns.

During the day Mr. G. Blom, one of the cine workers, was seen to be exposing a considerable quantity of movie film, and next night members were surprised by a projection of the same film recording some of the amusing incidents of the trip, and processed the same night on the return, from Stoney Creek. Following the screening of the "Isle of Dreams" Mr. Blom gave a demonstration of sulphide toning methods, a process becoming increasingly popular of late among many amateurs. A program of proposed club activities, in future is now being prepared for some months ahead, so members will be assured of subjects at forthcoming meetings. Some of the lectures in preparation cover filters, color processing, cine processing and lighting. At the next meeting on Monday night Mr. A.B. Cummings is giving a lecture and demonstration entitled, "Radiography".

The club thanks Kodaks Ltd. for the use of their G.A. Kodascope and screen, which have been kindly loaned on several occasions.

Saturday 21st June 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
PRINT EXHIBITION
It will be remembered that several times the desire has been expressed to arrange a small print exhibition among members, and with this in mind it has been decided to request as many members as possible to bring several enlargements to the next meeting. These prints must be of at least half plate dimensions, and preferably mounted. The show of pictures will occupy the second half of the meeting, and will take the form of a print criticism.

The first portion of the evening will be taken up by a short talk consisting of an introduction to the use of filters, and will be given by Mr. R. Williams. The subject of filters covers such extensive ground that it was thought advisable to divide it over several lectures.

At the last Camera Club meeting, which was held away from the usual club-rooms, the business was curtailed in order to allow Mr. A.B. Cummings to cover the rather lengthy subject of "Radiography". Mr. Cummings explained the elementary theory of X-ray technique, both photographically and electrically, and to those present cleared up a number of the "mysteries" surrounding this very interesting science.

Of great interest to the movie workers at this meeting was Mr. Cumming's Ampro-Sound Projector, which he explained in detail, especially the optical system and photo-electric cell. Many questions were answered, and as can be imagined the club is waiting expectantly to see and hear this machine in action.

It is pleasing to note the interest being taken in this club now that it is well established, and a welcome is extended to all new members, who are asked to note that the meeting on Monday night will again be held at St. John's Club-rooms, in Lake-street.

CAIRNS SHOW
The arts and crafts section has received excellent support, and the Cairns Camera Club, which has only recently been formed, will be displaying a very interesting non-competitive exhibit in the photographic section.

Wednesday 23rd July 1941  Page 9 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS SHOW
Although there were not a large number of competitors in the photography section, there was some very fine work shown. The judge, Mr. H. Chargois, said that he was very satisfied with the general standard and that he would be pleased to see more local competitors.

He was most enthusiastic about the non-competitive display by the Cairns Camera Club and said that although this club had been going only a short while they were already creating a more general interest in photography, and he hoped that next year many of the members would have entries in the competitive sections.

The display by the club was particularly fine and featured a number of enlargements of local views, so that it is particularly interesting to visitors to the show. It is proof that the members have taken up their work seriously, and although the display was non-competitive, the judge awarded it a highly commended card.

Monday 28th July 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
DISPLAY AT SHOW
A feature of outstanding interest in camera, enthusiasts eyes during the last few weeks has been the photographic section of this year's Cairns Show. Primarily the Camera Club's interest was centered in the preparation of its non-competitive, show of 12 prints, which were tastefully displayed to great advantage by the show authorities, who gave the club every assistance in this first exhibition.

Cairns Camera Club greatly appreciates the fine reception the prints have received and feels honored to have been highly commended by the judges of the photographic exhibits. The authors of the pictures are extremely pleased with the compliments that have been paid to their work.

Members of the club were keenly interested in the competitive photographs in the show and were high in their praise of some of the art work, quite apart from their own hobby.

At the last club meeting a short lecture entitled an "Introduction to Filters" was given by Mr. R.B. Williams, who explained some of the elementary principles governing the use of filters in photographic work. The latter part of the evening was devoted to the screening of Mr. Le Bas New Guinea pictures. Mr. Le Bas had kindly offered to replace the pictures to have been shown by the president, Captain C. Jones, who was unable to attend this meeting.

To-night two very interesting subjects have been selected for discussion. Mr. A.B. Cummings has prepared atalk for the movie workers, "Amateur Cine Photography", which deals with the main factors influencing successful production in this sphere of photography. Mr. John Houghton, in his lecture to-night, will explain the finer points in the selection of printing papers for use to their greatest advantage, and is supplementing his talk with a little instruction in methods of mounting prints, a subject which will be of great value, as many amateurs regard this process as containing a few too many pitfalls for any one but the greatly experienced.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
At the last meeting of the Cairns Camera Club it was decided to make the necessary arrangements for a trip to the West Cairns district to-morrow. The party will meet on the main road on the top of Reservoir Hill, between 9am and 10am to-morrow, Sunday. Lunches and the usual hiking gear will be necessary. Further plans can be made en route.

On Monday night members will bring their own personal equipment and any unusual accessories they might have evolved to assist their photographic work. In addition, the president, Captain C. Jones, will present a show of home movies, taken for the most part on a Fijian trip.

Saturday 23rd August 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
Since its inception, six months ago, many meetings of the Cairns Camera Club have been held, as well as several other functions, and through the interest created by these activities the membership has developed into a band of serious and enthusiastic amateur workers in both branches of this intriguing art-science, namely, still and cine photography.

For every club meeting there have been arranged short lectures and demonstrations, and although they have been of a somewhat introductory style, nevertheless, from these talks, information of considerable value has been derived, to be rapidly and successfully applied to their own particular work by club members. Following this period of introduction, it has now been decided to concentrate on the individual subjects in a more serious and practical vein and it is from this viewpoint that the club looks forward to a lecture being given on Monday night at the Club Rooms by Mr. H. Chargois FRPS.

"Portrait Lighting", the subject to be treated, will first be discussed more or less theoretically, and it is proposed to follow it in the near future with a practical demonstration under studio conditions.

The club is pleased to welcome Mr. Chargois, who has attained, by his work a place of considerable distinction in the world of photographic art.

It will be remembered that for the last meeting members were requested to bring some of their personal working equipment, for demonstration to others present that night. This resulted in an amazing collection of accessories and "gadgets", and it was found necessary to impose on the explanations a time limit to allow others to follow. This meeting was concluded with a fine show of movies from the president (Captain C. Jones), including a number of scenes of Fijian travel.

On the Sunday following last meeting a club outing was held and a day of considerably varied experiences was enjoyed by the club's ardent pictorialists, who explored the Freshwater Valley and West Cairns hills in search of the precious "trees" and "clouds" so dear to the heart of our artist-cameramen: and in a fashion rather reminiscent of our sturdy Swiss friends. Afternoon found the party traversing the hill-tops in fine style, occasionally varying their progress with vicious thorny encounters, and having found other means of descent from their lofty perch somewhat prolonged and tiring, adopted a well known but rather unorthodox method which certainly attained the desired result and brought them back to their rendezvous at Reservoir Hill at sunset, full of hopes for the results of their day's tramp.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
TO-NIGHTS MEETING
To those members of the club whose hobby covers the field of cine work, to-night's meeting will prove of exceptional interest. At the present time Messrs. Kodak Ltd. have in Cairns a film of some 400 feet demonstrating the versatility of the Cine Kodak Special. That firm kindly made this film available to the club for presentation to-night. In addition Mr. A.B. Cummings, who is the owner of one of these superb instruments, will give a talk on the camera and its accessory optical equipment. At the last Camera Club meeting members were delighted to have as guest lecturer Mr. H. Chargois FRPS, who gave a most interesting and instructive introduction to serious portraiture. The talk was illustrated with some superb examples of pictorial art comprising a collection of pictures of world-wide exhibition. At the conclusion of his lecture Mr. Chargois gave a most constructive criticism of pictures entered by the club in the last Cairns Show. This was greatly appreciated by the authors of the prints, and all members are eagerly awaiting the studio demonstration Mr. Chargois proposes to give shortly to supplement his lecture and advice of last evening.

Saturday 20th September 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
Kraft Cheese and cine cameras might be a somewhat incongruous combination for a Camera Club meeting, but both proved most interesting subjects at the last club gathering. Mr. Bruce Cummings gave a demonstration of the capabilities of his new Cine Kodak special. This superb instrument has an astounding collection of optical equipment, and the tripod for use with the "special" is something of a revelation. Accompanying Mr. Cummings lecture was the showing of a film kindly lent for the occasion by Messrs. KodakLtd., demonstrating the "special" in action and graphically illustrating the uses of its comprehensive accessory equipment. Also on the program of last meeting was the presentation of an educational film depicting the various processes involved in the manufacture of Kraft Cheese. This film was photographed in Kodachrome and the presentation of this subject in color is a credit to its producers. For Monday night it has been arranged for Mr. John Houghton to speak on a subject about which pictorialists are ever hungry for information, namely, "Monochromatic Rendering of Landscapes", to use a title of some technicality. Furthermore members are requested to make every endeavor to attend this meeting as the business for discussion demands serious consideration. The meeting will take place at the Lake-street club rooms.

Monday 13th October 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
Readers will remember a talk given by Mr. H. Chargois at the Cairns Camera Club meeting some time ago, in which an outline of portrait photography was presented. Mr. Chargois dealt with this subject from a somewhat theoretical angle at the time and stated that it was his intention to elaborate on his remarks with a demonstration in his studio. This evening the lecture will be continued and to facilitate the difficulties of a meeting place Mr. Chargois has kindly allowed the club to hold its meeting in his studio in Lake-street. Members are particularly asked to note this to avoid any confusion.

The last club meeting was the scene of a happy little social event in a presentation to Mr. and Mrs. John Houghton on the occasion of their marriage.

Mr. John Houghton also gave a very interesting talk at this meeting, the subject being "Landscape Rendition". This was dealt with from numerous angles and proved highly instructive, as this is an aspect of photographic practice about which the pictorially inclined are always eager for information.

Monday 27th October 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
This evening the Cairns Camera Club returns to the Lake-street club rooms for the regular meeting. The subject chosen for discussion is "Color Processing", and will consist of a demonstration and talk by Mr. R.B. Williams on the treatment of color transparencies.

The last club meeting was held at Chargois Studio, and members had the opportunity of seeing first-hand, the equipment of a portrait photographer in action in the very capable hands of Mr. H. Chargois, to whom the club is very grateful for a most instructive evening.

At the meeting to-night there will come up for discussion, several proposals which should prove of far reaching benefit to the club, and which will also be of great interest to individual members, and so the club is asked to make every endeavor to obtain a full attendance.

Monday 10th November 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
The highlight of this evening's Cairns Camera Club meeting will be the presentation of Mr. A.B. Cumming's latest moving pictures. These comprise a natural color record of some of our most beautiful orchids and other flowering plants, and will prove of exceptional interest to camera men and naturalists alike. Supplementing this screening will be a print show by members of the school of still photography, and a deal of mutual and constructive criticism is certain to result from this small exhibition.

At the last meeting a demonstration of color processing methods was given by Mr. R.B. Williams, and judging by the inquiries since received a great amount of interest in this field has been aroused.

Monday 24th November 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
At the Cairns Camera Club meeting to-night at St. Johns club rooms, Mr. J.A. Murray is to give a lecture to members on some of the finer points in pictorial photography. This talk is to be illustrated with some very fine examples of pictorial art and all members are urged to endeavour to attend. Following the lecture will be a small print criticism for those desiring to submit pictures.

At the last meeting a splendid collection of prints of holiday life on a coastal island were exhibited, as well as some of club members latest efforts.

Monday 8th December 1941  Page 3 - Cairns Post (Queensland)

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
The keen movie makers of Cairns should find this evening's Cairns Camera Club meeting a most attractive function. Arrangements have been made for Mr. A.B. Cummings to give a show of his "latest efforts" in color photography work. This little presentation will consist of some most beautiful and remarkable studies of orchid blossoms and other flowers and are unsurpassed in their clarity and rendition of the delicate colors and structure of these superb blooms. To the botanist, photographer and flower lover alike, these pictures will give a new appreciation of natural beauty, and the club extends an invitation to this evening's meeting at St John's Club rooms. At the last meeting the club was fortunate to have as lecturer Mr. J.A. Murray, who gave a most enjoyable and instructive talk on pictorial photography relative to art, and dealt with the finer points of picture making from that point of view. The criticism of members prints was much appreciated and points of great benefit to future work were revealed. The club values the soundness of Mr. Murray's advice, and wishes to extend its thanks for a lecture of great estimation.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
This evening's meeting of the Cairns Camera Club will mark the reopening of club activities after the suspension for the Christmas and New Year period. The subject chosen for the lecture to-night is one dealing with an aspect of photography which holds infinite possibilities in its present application to still photography in aerial maps and survey work, as well as in the amateur field. This subject is stereoscopic photography, or the reproduction of depth in pictures, and in the capable hands of Rev. H. Norton, who has done a considerable amount of "stereo" work, this talk should be full of interest for members.

ADULT EDUCATION AT INNISFAIL
Adult Education will present on Wednesday the fourth of a series of photography lectures by Mr. L.J. Stack.

Past lectures have dealt with the history of photography, types of cameras and their uses, and the common mistakes of the amateur. How many people for instance, regularly use their lenses? Yet this is one of the essentials which make for good photography. How should one photograph a moving object. These are two of the many points explained by Mr. Stack in his last lecture.

Wednesday will be essentially a practical night, as Mr. Stack will demonstrate the correct method of developing a film. The lectures have now reached the stage at which it may be possible to form a Camera Club.

At the last lecture some excellent photographs taken by the Cairns Camera Club were on show.

The monthly meeting of the Cairns Camera Club will be held next Tuesday night, April 24, at 8pm, in the School of Arts building. Mr. L. Law will give an address on table top and still life photography. A demonstration by the lecturer will follow, after which members will be asked to try their own ideas with arrangement of subject matter and lighting. Members are reminded to bring their cameras and any articles suitable to this branch of photography.

The monthly field day took the form of a basket picnic at Behana Creek on April 1. About 20 members and friends had an enjoyable day. Lighting conditions were ideal and it is expected that some outstanding prints will be offered for criticism by the judges on Tuesday night, the subject being "riverside".

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
The next monthly meeting of the Cairns Camera Club will be held at 8pm on the School of Arts verandah. The highlight of the evening will be the table top prints handed in for constructive criticism.

An outing took place at Palm Beach on May 6. Though the day was marred by intermittent light showers, club members turned out in force and subject matter ranged from the truly majestic "paper-barks" to flower studies of the lovely water lilies. Conditions for seascape work were unsuitable.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
The fourth Tuesday in March ushered in a new (and the third) year in the Cairns Camera Club existence.

The retiring President (L. Law), in a summary of the year’s activities, advised that the points system be discontinued.

Office-bearers for the forthcoming year: President, T. Murray; Secretary-Treasurer, S. Gorkill; and a supporting committee.

Points aggregate for the past year: T. Murray, with N. Ferguson a close runner-up.

Some 25 prints were submitted for the annual competitions. Judges: L. Law and W. Orthraan ARPS.

Results:
A GRADE: No entries.
B GRADE: Print of the year: T. Murray.
B GRADE: BEST FOUR PRINTS: S. Gorkill.
C GRADE: Print of the Year: Mrs. A. Dry.
C GRADE: BEST FOUR PRINTS: H. Coleman.

The judges commented favorably on the composition and pictorial quality of C Grade Print of the Year, stating that, although marred by surface defects, this was an outstanding picture.

An impromptu demonstration of control by powdered graphite was given by W. Orthman ARPS, on some of the entries. He stressed the point that prim control by this method should be on matte paper, preferably hardened and surface prepared by pumice powder.

The monthly meeting was held on 24th April at Cairns School of Arts. About twenty-four, including three new members, were present. On display was quite a large number of prints, some of which will, in due course, be forwarded to support the Kingston State School Show.

The field day took the form of a basket picnic at Behana Creek. Conditions were ideal as regards lighting and clouds, but subject matter proved difficult, it being mostly of a contrasty nature.

Highlight of the outing: D.H. requested permission to 'take' a bunch of bananas. The owner, a Southern European, thought the Iron Curtain had lifted and a spate of words followed. Explanations, a pacified small-holder, and a preferred glass of wine followed. Later, farewelled by a chuckled remark: “Taka da bunch”.

Lecturer at the meeting was Lionel Law, who spoke on “Still Life and Table Top”. The use of an empty frame was shown as a time-saver in determining the best composition of the set-up in mind and, unless a dramatic effect is intended, a soft or even a weak light is preferable.

CAIRNS CAMERA CLUB
The annual general meeting of the Cairns Camera Club was held in the School of Arts on March 25. The report of the retiring president (Mr. T. Murray) revealed that steady progress had been made by the members in the quality of their prints, due, to a large extent, to the continued help of Messrs. L. Law and W. Orthman ARPS, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was passed.

The retiring secretary (Mr. S. Corkill) was elected president for the ensuing year, and Mr. A. Dry secretary-treasurer.

The annual judging of prints will take place at the next meeting on April 22. However, before this, there will be an outing to Peat's Bridge on Sunday next, April 6, to which prospective members are cordially invited.

The meeting place has been set as the Five-ways at 8am. Limited transport will be available for those unable to arrange their own.

CAIRNS SLIDES WERE INTERESTING
Color slides with a recorded commentary of Cairns and district proved an interesting feature at the April meeting of the Hawkesbury Photographic Society.

The feature was supplied by the Cairns Camera Club, who exchanged a similar feature with the Hawkesbury Photographic Society.

A more ambitious project on a similar feature is planned by the local society, and this will be loaned for - screening throughout Australia, thus being an effective means of advertising the Hawkesbury district.

The competition subject was "Boats" and, although entries were small, the quality was good. Brian Stevens made the following awards: Steve Simmonds I, Clive Brown 2, Margaret Dale, 3.
