Our meeting on 14th September, held in our Clubroom, 30 Frederick Street, Miranda, opened with our monthly competition in which the results were. SET SUBJECT, “ARCHITECTURE”: 1, M. Mariner; 2, T. Nurse; 3, J. Short. OPEN SUBJECT: 1, C. Carmichael; 2, C. Carmichael; 3, F. Matson. Our thanks go to Mr. K.L. Aston, and Mr. D. Mr. Aston gave an instructive talk on Club Management from which many valuable points were gained.

At our last fortnightly meeting on 28th September Mr. B. Townsend gave another of a series of his interesting lectures, this time the subject being Composition illustrated with color slides from which we gained considerable knowledge for our next competition which will take place on October 12th, the subject being Landscape.

The Program Committee has drawn up a very interesting syllabus for the ensuing 12 months which includes Black-and-White, Color, Movie Competitions, Outings, and a Cine Night for the kiddies at Christmas. A copy of the syllabus is available on application to the Secretary.

At the fortnightly meeting held on November 9th, a Cine night was held at the residence of Mr. F. Johns and about 40 members and visitors were in attendance. Some very interesting films were screened, Mr. Johns showing some of his travels overseas. Mr. T. Nurse screened his film taken on the Society’s recent outing on Port Hacking, and a Melbourne Cup film was entered by Mr. P. Joice.

An outing at Bundeena was held on 8th November and a very pleasant day was had by all. Mr. Carmichael provided his launch and the members pulled in at Jibbon Beach where they had lunch. Some very good pictures are anticipated as the sea was in the right mood and brilliant sunshine prevailed.

Our club will be pleased to welcome visitors or prospective members, and especially ladies. As we have our own premises, we have a darkroom and are able to give practical demonstrations and instructions to beginners in processing their own films, prints, enlargements, etc.

Members and visitors who travel by rail will be met by car between 7.45pm and 8pm at either Caringbah or Miranda Stations. For further information please contact the organizer, Mr. C. Carmichael, of Miranda, or the Secretary, Mr. A.R. Collins, Clifford Road, Miranda.

The general meeting of the Caringbah Photographic Society took place at the club rooms, 30 Frederick Street, Miranda, on Monday, 10th May, 1954, when a very good attendance of members and visitors was present.

An instructive lecture was delivered by Mr. M. Hind of Miranda on "Enlarging" and after giving a practical demonstration, members and visitors were invited to make enlargements under instruction of Mr. Hind.

On Sunday, 2nd May, 1954, an outing in the Camden district was held and approximately 35 members and friends attended. Memers made camp at Cut Hill and after lunch, photographs were taken on a set subject under instruction of Mr. Hind. Members then split up in various groups spending the rest of the afternoon taking landscape photographs of the beautiful scenery prominent in this district.

Further information will be gladly furnished by contacting the Secretary, Mr. A.R. Collis, 2 Clifford Road, Miranda, or at MX 2901.

A competition was held at the fortnightly regular meeting of the society on June 7th, at the clubrooms, 30 Frederick Street, Miranda. The Set Subject was Tree Study, taken under the supervision and advice of Mr. M. Hind at our recent outing in the Camden district, and the winning print was by R. Pidgeon of Cronulla. There were many entries in the Open Subject, the placings being: 1, H. Quigg, Miranda; 2, D. Short, Caringbah; 3, F, Reeves, Gymea.

Mr. Hind acted as judge for the Competition and offered criticism on each individual print and commented on the improved quality of the entries, especially those of H. Quigg which, he stated, would hold a strong place in any inter-club competition. Mr. Matson of Miranda produced a special print which he had hand colored and this was highly commended by the judge. It is quite probable that competitions on hand-colored prints will be held in the near future.

The Membership is steadily growing and it is heartening to see the increase in the number of lady members. At the last meeting four new members were enrolled, and enthusiasm is so strong that an informal night is now held every alternate Monday so that members may exchange their views and ideas.

Anyone interested in photography, whether they be beginners or advanced photographers, are welcome to attend the society’s meetings. If further information is required, please contact the Publicity Officer, Mr. C. Carmichael, Matson Crescent, Miranda, Tel. LB 6549.

The competition for the Print of the Year was held at the clubrooms, 30 Frederick Street, Miranda on July 19th in the presence of a very large attendance of members and visitors. Mr. F. Newman of the Campsie Camera Club kindly acted as judge and with his usual good humor gave a detailed criticism on each print, followed by a very fine lecture and demonstration on Copying with the Enlarger. The competition resulted: 1, D. Short; 2, T. Nurse; 3, M. Hind.

Quigg; 3 (Equal), F. Matson and A. Hinchcliffe.

An Amusing Candid Shot was the Set Subject for August 16th. This was judged very ably by Mr. M. Hind who introduced an innovation by asking each member in turn to give a definition of the story of their print, how the subject was taken, etc., and offer general summing up of the judge’s criticism in comparison with their own. This idea proved very successful and will be repeated in future competitions. The winners of the Set Competition were; 1, R. Mills; 2, H. Quigg; 3, R. Mills.

In the Open Subject the results were: 1, C.W. Watkins ARPS; 2, A. Hinchcliffe; 3, C. Carmichael.

Thanks go to Professor Bissieta of Pitt Street, Sydney, who traveled to Caringbah to act as judge, for this competition and who also gave a very interesting lecture on Art and Color.

About 40 slides were entered in the competition, all of exceptionally good quality. It is interesting to note that many more members are now taking an interest in color and entering competitions.

The committee wish to express their appreciation to Father Keller who has made the hall available, as the club has grown so rapidly that our clubrooms are not large enough to accommodate all the members and visitors on competition nights, although the clubrooms are still being used for demonstrations and lectures.

Visitors and prospective members are welcome at all meetings and lectures, and for further particulars, contact the Publicity Officer, Mr. C. Carmichael, 26 Matson Crescent, Miranda, LB6549.

A camera night was held in the Catholic Hall, President Avenue, Caringbah, when the club, engaged a professional model to pose so that members could be given an opportunity to make first-class portraits. Mr. Charles Watkins supervised and showed his ability in this field of photography.

Every member was given a chance to take an individual photo while Mr. Watkins offered any technical advice where required.

Miss Rogers, who posed for the club, showed great patience and a thorough knowledge of the Art, while waiting for members to set up their cameras or adjust lights, etc. Much knowledge was gained during the evening which is another step towards making this club the best in the metropolitan area.

Visitors and prospective members are welcome at all meetings and can obtain further particulars from Publicity Officer, Mr. C. Carmichael, LB 6549.
