HANDLING TIMBER THE EASY WAY WITH A HYSTER FORK LIFT TRUCK

The above picture, taken by Dr. J.E. Hardy, was first-prize winner in the Circular Head Camera Club, September print competition, shows the new fork lift truck delivered a few months ago to Circular Head Amalgamated Timbers at Stanley.

This pneumatic tyred truck is of the latest design to be imported from America. Weighing nearly nine tons, it has a load capacity of six to seven tons, and a standard working height of 17ft. 6in.

The mill management has commenced a new racking system in order to utilize fully the capacity of the machine and to economize in racking space. Recently the Hyster (commercial name for the truck) was used to stack timber in racks five high, a spectacular operation. It is also a useful adjunct to the loading of ships and was recently used to speed the turn round of S.S. Koranui.

Mr. Geoff Baker, who is shown operating the Hyster, recently left to take a position with Clements and Marshall in Devonport. Geoff has a high reputation as a supervisor of pre-drying and kiln work, being ranked among the leading men in the State in this sphere. He was in charge of the Stanley wind-tunnel and kilns before they were destroyed by fire last year.

The recently formed and enthusiastic Circular Head Camera Club conducts a competition each month, and has already produced some very fine camera studies. The subject for the September competition was "Men At Work".
