THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
After a very successful Annual Salon held on December 12th, the Camera Circle got away to a very good start in the New Year. The competition subject for January was Child Study, and some very good prints were entered to compete for the trophies. The Cup for A GRADE was awarded to B. Naudy, with the medal for B GRADE to N. Whittaker.

A field day was held on January 25th when members went to Burragorang Valley with their gear and some very fine photographs were taken. Despite the fact that the weather was slightly overcast the party had a very enjoyable day.

The club welcomes a new member, Mr. B. Couper, who has recently returned from England after being away for over two years. Members are looking forward to seeing his overseas color slides at the next meeting in March.

Results of the Annual Salon were:
A GRADE: 1, Laurie Friend; 2, R. Simpson; 3, L. Hoggard; HC, Laurie Friend.
B GRADE: 1, W. Glading; 2, W. Glading; HC, W. Glading; HC, F. Gerrard.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
On March 4th the Garden Island Camera Circle held its monthly get-together at the Island. The monthly competition was Open and prints of a very high standard were judged by the Island’s panel of judges. The placings of the competition were:
A GRADE: 1, Laurie Friend (“Australian Landscape"); 2, B. Coupar (“Rustic Tranquility”); 3, Laurie Friend {“Storm Patrol”); HC, W. Glading {“Sea Gulls”).

After the judging had been concluded a constructive criticism of the prints in general was given by Mr. Phil Dean, Assistant Radiographer at Garden Island. Congratulations were offered to Mr. W. Glading on his winning a competition in a photographic magazine. When club business had been concluded a color slide show of an extensive tour of Europe was presented by Mr. B. Coupar, and this brought to an end a most enjoyable evening for members and visitors.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
Because most of the members have been on annual leave the only function last month was a field day at Forester’s Beach, where some very fine shots were taken.

Despite a wet night on May 6th there was a very good attendance for our monthly meeting with an excellent display of prints for the monthly exhibition in which the honors were:
A GRADE: 1, L. Hoggarth, Cargo Shed; 2, B. Couper, Over the Way; 3, D. Flinn, Tranquility; HC, G. Smith, Come Rest in my Shade.
B GRADE: 1, A. Braybrooke, Poplar Lane and Solitude (equal); 2, Griffith, (two equal).

After a criticism had been passed on the other prints, a show of color slides was given in which most members exhibited slides which were taken on their annual leave and a most entertaining 90 minutes was had by all.

Correspondence relating to the Circle should be addressed to Mr. Bert Coupar, C/- Garden Island Dockyard Pattern Shop.

The Circle’s field day held on May 5th at Taronga Zoo was also a social outing and a very pleasant day was had by all. A field day in the near future has been arranged for Port Kembla.

On June 3rd our monthly meeting was again held at Garden Island and the business of the club resulted in Mr. B. Couper being elected to the position of Secretary and Mr. B. Noudie to the position of Assistant Secretary. Members have agreed on the club’s badge, which will be seen in the near future.

The subject of the June competition was Trees and the standard of the prints was again of very high quality. The honors were taken by:
A GRADE: 1, Laurie Friend, Guardian of the Forest; 2, W. Gladding, The Gum; 3, L. Hoggard, Sunlight and Shadow.
B GRADE: 1, J. Griffith, Prince Eucalypt; HC, N. Whittaker, On Parade.

We extend hearty congratulations to the club’s Treasurer, Mr. Laurie Friend, who won the Four Diverse Prints section and also gained other placings with the Y.M.C.A. Camera Circle (1953).

A lecture was later delivered by Mr. Townsend of the Kodak Lecture Service on Enlarging, with such simple thoroughness that all members and visitors gleaned invaluable information. Mr. Townsend answered innumerable questions; thus a very pleasant evening was enjoyed by all.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
The Second Annual Exhibition, which was held on December 4th, proved to be a successful show, particularly for a young club of limited membership. The Exhibition was opened by Captain F.N. Cook, Superintendent of the Yard, who made a most interesting introductory speech.

The Print of the Year was selected by our panel of judges, Messrs. Deane, Ferguson and Fallon, all of Garden Island. The prize, awarded to Laurie Friend for his excellent Print, “The Guardian of the Forest”, was presented by Captain Cook and consisted of a valuable book, “My Experiences in Color Photography”, by Dr. Paul Woolfe, which was very kindly donated by Mr. Metcalfe, of Henry Yorke and Co. Ltd.

A color screening of 50 slides followed. These were representative of the work of members and entailed quite a lot of discussion when we were selecting them prior to the show. During the evening the Garden Island Entertainment Unit contributed much towards the enjoyment of the show. Three sound films were screened by member D. Flinn, who loaned his 16mm projector and officiated as projectionist.

At the November meeting the following office bearers were elected for 1954; President, Mr. G. Smith Secretary, Mr. W.A. Glading; Treasurer, Mr. Laurie Friend Librarian, Mr. A. Braybrooke; Publicity Officer, Mr. L. Hoggard. Mr. Hoggard’s address is Balmoral Street, Hornsby. The Secretary may be contacted by telephone during business hours, FA0444, Ext, 522 and after hours L 82567.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
The first meeting of 1954 was held on January 13th. The competition for the night was Portrait and was won by W. Glading, with G. Smith gaining second and third. After the print judging and commentary, the quarterly color competition was held, and the first award went to Laurie Friend, with G. Smith second and L. Hoggard third. This was our first color competition and it aroused keen interest in the members. Our next color competition will be held in May, so we will have plenty of time to expose some new slides.

Due to the holiday disorganization, we did not have as good a showing as usual for our "Portrait" competition, but we hope to do better with the next monthly competition, which will be “Children at Play”. The following month’s competition is “Architecture”, which will require a portfolio of three different architectural shots from each member, the award going to the best three.

On 3rd February, a launch was hired to cruise the harbour and await the arrival of the Queen. Amongst those present were a number of members of the Y.M.C.A. Camera Circle, who utilized their cameras to the full. Our President, Mr. G. Smith, and Secretary, Mr. W Glading, are to be congratulated upon the successful organizing of the trip.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
Our second monthly meeting was held on March 3rd, the meeting scheduled for February having been canceled owing to the indisposition of our Secretary and also to the fact that the majority of our members had other commitments on that particular night. However, the March meeting drew almost one hundred per cent attendance and the evening went with a swing. The real purpose of the evening was a screening of members slides of the Royal Tour. It was decided unanimously that the next Color Competition, in April, will be set around the Royal Visit.

After the Slide Show, a most interesting and enlightening talk was given by Mr. H.N. Jones ARPS, ably accompanied by Mr. J.W. Metcalfe. The subject was the well-known Tilney Collection, a number of prints from which were exhibited and used as an illustration to Mr. Jones talk. Mr. Jones brought to our attention many points about these prints that made each one a successful picture. Mr. Metcalfe also pointed out that electric or telephone wires running across a picture could be utilized to assist in the composition by breaking up awkward portions of some pictures.

The March Competition will combine two set subjects. {Architecture, A Portfolio of Three Architectural Subjects), and the March Open Competition.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
On 5th May, the circle held a Visitors Night. The program consisted of a Color Show of the Royal Tour and a Color Competition set around the same subject. Our guests of honor were the Port Officer, Captain F.N. Cook, and Mrs. Cook. Also present were representatives of the Caringbah Camera Club, as well as friends and relatives of circle members.

After a preliminary screening of some 60 miscellaneous slides, the main screening was commenced and about 200 slides were projected. These comprised the arrival of the Gothic , scenes on the harbour, the Royal Progress, decorated streets and buildings, the changing of the guard at Government House, illuminations and fireworks, and the departure of the “Gothic” from Sydney Harbour. The slides were contributed by four club members, Messrs. G. Smith, B. Naudy, L. Friend and L. Hoggard.

The competition was divided into two sections, Daylight and Illuminations and Fireworks. The Daylight Section was won by L. Friend, who also gained second Section, Laurie Friend again scooped the pool with first, second and third; L. Hoggard was awarded HC. The Competition slides were first shown together with the main screening, and the audience were asked to spot the winners. Then, at the completion of the main show, they were separately screened and the placings announced. The night’s commentator was Mr. B. Naudy and a most entertaining evening was had by all present.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
On Sunday afternoon, 20th June, the circle held a well-attended outing to the Sydney Domain and its environs. This outing was for the purpose of photographing a set subject for the July Competition. The subject finally chosen was the small stone building adjacent to the Conservatorium of Music and it was pictured from all angles. After exhausting the possibilities of this building, members proceeded to the sea wall at Farm Cove, where some action shots were taken of the speedboats as they raced past.

The monthly meeting, held on July 7th, was attended by the Patron of the Circle, Captain F.N. Cook. The main event of the evening was a lecture on Enlarging by Mr. Barry Townsend of Kodak Lecture Service. This talk was most interesting and informative especially to our newer members some of whom had not previously seen enlarging done. Our more advanced members also found food for thought in Mr. Townsend’s remarks.

The June Competition was Action Shots and the awards were:
A GRADE: 1, L. Hoggard; 2, G. Smith; 3, G. Smith; HC, L. Hoggard.
B GRADE: 1, R. Templeton; 2, N. Whittaker; 3, N. Whittaker; HC, R. Templeton.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
On July 25th, members were the guests of Mr. C. Carmichael of the Caringbah Photographic Society on a launch trip around Port Hacking. Although the day was cold and windy, an enjoyable time was had and several photogenic spots were explored and throughly photographed.

At the meeting on August 4th, the Set Subject was the stone building adjacent to the Conservatorium of Music. The awards were:
A GRADE: 1, L. Hoggard; 2, W. Glading.
B GRADE: 1, N. Whittaker; 2, N. Whittaker; 3, N. Whittaker.

As usual, a print criticism and discussion was conducted amongst the members, and much interest and benefit was gained by all taking part.

On August 8th, the circle joined the Photographic Society’s Combined-Outing at Palm Beach, and all present considered it a memorable day.

The competition on September 1st was Landscape, and the awards were:
A GRADE: 1, Laurie Friend; 2, W. Glading; 3, W. Glading.
B GRADE: 1, N. Whittaker; 2, N. Whittaker.

THE GARDEN ISLAND CAMERA CIRCLE
On Sunday, September 26th, about 30 members of the Caringbah Photographic Society and the Garden Island Camera Circle got together for a combined outing at Garie Beach. Unfortunately the weather did not co-operate but, in spite of gray skies and cold breezes, a sociable and interesting day was enjoyed by all which proves that dull days do not mean dull company. There is always opportunity for lively argument when camera fans bring out their pet theories. These discussions are also a fertile field for candid shots of varied expressions on the faces of the ones engaged and these opportunities are generally utilized to the full.

On the night of October 6th, a delightful color screening was given at Garden Island by Mr. R. Dallimore of the Caringbah Photographic Society. His slides covered a very wide area of Central Australia from Bourke to Mt. Isa and included such famous places as Ayers Rock, Brunette Downs, Hermansburg Mission, Charlotte Downs and Tennant’s Creek. The show was much appreciated, and we all envied Mr. Dallimore his opportunities for making these fine slides.

Our competition for the evening was “Open” and the awards were;
“A” GRADE: 1, W. Glading; 2, W. Glading; 3, W. Glading.
“B” GRADE: 1, R. Templeton; 2, N. Whittaker.

Owing to pressure of work and the overtime at present being worked by most of our members, we have been compelled to postpone our Third Annual Exhibition which was to have been held early in December. We regret having to do this but have no alternative since organizing an Exhibition requires a great deal of spare-time activity on the part of the Committee.

If all goes well however, we hope to hold the Exhibition about March 1955.
