The balance-sheet showed a credit of £9 4s. 5d., and the balance of assets over liabilities was £78 12s. 5d. The library contained over 100 bound volumes of useful photographic works. Mr. Collins had rendered good service as librarian. Dark-room improvements had been effected, and the increase of members lockers was probable.

Messrs. A.J. Relph and J.H. Harvey were thanked for their lectures, and Messrs. Relph, Hammerton, and Thacker for giving competition trophies.

The club’s good wishes were tendered to Mr. H.V. Leckie, who is leaving by R.M.S. Otway in a fortnight to study the photographic art in London. From a junior member he had worked up to the club’s highest standard, and they trusted he would meet with well merited success.

The Hon.Secretary, Mr. H.L.S. Potter, was commended for his valued work.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Messrs. J. Hammerton and A. Mockridge.

The election of office-bearers resulted:

Mr. A.O. Muncey was the winner of the club’s gold medal, having obtained the highest aggregate number of points in the 12 monthly competitions. The silver medal for second highest number of points be came the property of Mr. Tom Harrison.

During the evening a presentation of a purse of sovereigns was made to the esteemed secretary, Mr. H.L.S. Potter. The president, in making the presentation, referred to the good work done by the Hon.Secretary, who, by his untiring efforts, had placed the association in the flourishing condition it was in to-day.

Mr. Potter, in returning thanks, said it was the good feeling amongst members that made the secretary’s task the easier.

A splendid supper was provided at the expense of the president.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The Annual Meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held at the College on the 14th July. Mr. A. Mockridge occupying the chair.

The Annual Report and Balance Sheet showed that the Society was in a very flourishing condition, and that notwithstanding the war and drought, the finances were in a very satisfactory state.

Thanks were tendered the Judges of the various competitions held throughout the year, to the members who helped at meetings with demonstrations, etc., to Messrs Kodak (Australasia) Ltd., and Harrington for journals, to the donors of trophies, Messrs. J. Hammerton and A. Mockridge, and to Mr. L. Hirst for presenting half-a dozen lockers for the Dark Room.

Feeling reference was made to the loss the Society had sustained through the death of Mr. Relph, whose services at all times had been at the disposal of the Society, and with whom many instructive and entertaining evenings had been spent.

The result of the June Competition for Best Lantern Slides resulted: Mr. H.A. Purnell, first: Mr. A. Muncey. second; and Mr. T.P. Treyvaud, third.

The Shield given for the highest aggregate of points gained throughout the year in the twelve Competitions held was won by Mr. P. Treyvaud, Mr. H. Haney, second.

A record was placed on the minutes conveying the hearty thanks of the Society to Mr. A. Muncey, the retiring Secretary, whose keen interest in the welfare of the Society left nothing to be desired.

An attractive Syllabus has been prepared and Competitions will, as usual, be held each month for prizes donated by the Society, Mr J. Hammerton again donating a Shield for the highest aggregate for 12 months.

New Office Bearers have been elected to every office and with Mr. J. Hammerton as President and Messrs. H. Haney and P. Treyvaud as Joint Hon.Secretaries, a very interesting and profitable term is assured.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
In submitting the 27th annual report, the Committee made reference to the sound position held by the Club, both financially and with regard to membership. Eleven new members were elected during the year. Fourteen have enlisted and are at present on active service. An Honor Roll has been placed in the Club’s Room.

The attendance in the earlier part of the year was not all that could be desired, owing to the influence of the war, but later there was a change for the better. The Club’s dark-room has been particularly popular.

The entries for the monthly competitions were of a high order. In connection with the recent Victorian Photographic Affiliation Exhibition in Melbourne, the Club submitted 21 prints, all of which were accepted and hung. The demonstrations and other regular features have been very useful and members have derived much benefit.

An attractive syllabus for the coming half year has been prepared, and it is hoped that the activities of the Club will be well sustained.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The past year was most successful. Many new members were welcomed. An excellent syllabus comprising demonstrations in bromoil, carbro, retouching, toning, tinting, etc., was carried out, and the social side had been attended to by several motor trips.

There was much regret in losing the services of the Hon.Secretary, Mr. P.H. Treyvaud. who had acted for many years, and a special vote of thanks was accorded him for his past services.

During the year interest in competition work was well maintained, and the shield donated by Mr. Hammerton for the highest aggregate was won by Miss A. Miles, who had been a consistent competitor throughout. Mr. A. Muncey, the incoming President, will give the trophy for the highest aggregate in the coming year, and Mr. Hammerton has also promised a trophy.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The first meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held in January, 1889, and to fittingly celebrate the fiftieth anniversary a re-union of past and present members took place on February 22nd.

Amongst the thirty-seven who attended were Mr. H.G. Roebuck (Foundation President, 1889-1896); H. Denmead (Vice-President), A.V. Smith, H.A. Purnell, George R. King, O.B.E., F.R.A.I.A. (life member), T. G. Moore, P.H. Treyvand (Past Secretary), T.L. Gurr, A.S. Mockridge, P. Neilson, R.R. Pavia (Principal Gordon Institute).

The President (Mr. H.L.S. Potter) (life member), in his presidential address of welcome, referred to the debt the club owed to its foundation members and old members, and expressed special pleasure at the presence of Mr. H.G. Roebuck. He also referred to the objects of the club having been to consistently encourage its members to appreciate the value of the pictorial as well as the technical side of photography, and said it was up to the present and future members to worthily carry on the example set by the founders of what is now believed to be the oldest amateur photographic association in the British Empire outside the British Isles.

A number of lantern slides of domestic interest recalled some outings during the early days of the club, and during a "free and easy” portion of the program many incidents were recalled, chief among which were:

Inter-colonial Photographic Exhibition of Easter, 1905 (the first in the Commonwealth); the honor obtained by the club at the World Exhibition in Dresden in 1909; the highest membership in the years 1912-1914, totaling between seventy and eighty; the enlistment of many members in the Great War, some of whom paid the supreme sacrifice; and the work of the club in the interests of the "Snapshots-from-Home League".

Light refreshments were served by the members, and a short toast list included: "The King”; "Old Members,” submitted by Mr. G.R. King, and responded to by Messrs. H. G. Roebuck, H.L.S. Potter, T. Gurr. A.S. Mockridge, P. Neilson and H.A. Purnell; "The Association", submitted by Mr. J. Sharpe, responded to by the Secretary, who stated that the formation of a Cine Section of the club was being mooted; "The Gordon College Council” (coupled with the Principal, Mr. Pavia), was submitted by Mr. Muncy (life member), and supported by Mr. Denmead, both of whom expressed the gratitude (to the council) of the club.

The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" terminated a very happy reunion.

The Secretary, Mr. F.A. Williams, 33 Elizabeth Street, Newtown, Geelong, Victoria, would be pleased to hear from any past members of the association who may happen to read this account.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
In submitting the 57th Annual Report, the committee is pleased to state that the Club has had another successful year. This year the aggregate trophy was won by Mr. E. Rogers, with Mr. G. Rowe in second place. To Mr. Rogers also goes the honor of having the best picture of the year. The trophy donated by Mr. F. Williams to the member who had not won an aggregate was won by Mr. G. Rowe. The Club extends its congratulations to these members.

In December and June, members and their friends were entertained at social evenings by the President (Mr. H.L.S. Potter) and Vice-President (Mr. J. Sharp). Also on the social side of the Club’s activities was included two visits to Mr. B. Brownbill’s theatrette, at which members enjoyed the screening of films. Members also held a “Landscape” outing to Murgheboluc.

With the completion of the war and the return of members from Active Service, combined with the marked improvement in photographic supplies and the hope of a more suitable Club Room, the Committee feels sure that the Club should continue to carry on as it has in the past.

In conclusion, we would like to thank the Council of the Gordon Institute for the use of the Club Room, and the Secretary, Mr. E. Rogers, for his sterling work throughout the year.

When submitting the 58th Annual Report to the Chairman and Members at the Annual Meeting held in the clubrooms on Wednesday, 9th July, the Secretary made reference to the improvement in work submitted by members towards the end of the year.

The Aggregate Trophy was won by Mr. John Abercrombie, whilst Mr. Keith Briggs secured second place. To Mr. Abercrombie also goes the honor for the Best Picture of the Year with his character study “Meditation”.

In the very near future the Association expects to be moving into a new clubroom at the College, where wider facilities will be available for the members use.

Office-bearers for the coming year were elected as follows: President, Mr. H.L.S. Potter; Vice-Presidents, Messrs. J. Sharp and G. Rowe; Joint Secretaries, Messrs. E. Rogers and K. Briggs; Assistant Secretary and Press Correspondent, Mrs. R. Abercrombie.

We thank the Council of the Gordon College for its continued support of amateur photography by making available a room for the use of the Association, and we thank the Geelong Advertiser for publicity given in the press during the past year. Our thanks also go to Mr. Rogers for his good work as secretary during the year.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
During August we moved into the new clubroom, which is very spacious and undoubtedly should prove an incentive to better work.

Mr. Porter, of Kodak Ltd., gave a very interesting illustrated talk on the manufacture and processing of film and paper at the Abbotsford factory. He covered the subject thoroughly, and at the conclusion answered many questions.

Mrs. Lorna Rowe demonstrated the art of oil coloring, which, we all know, is apart from photography; yet we must admit that portraiture, and sometimes flower studies, have an added interest when tinted with oil colors.

The Flower Study Competition, judged by a former member of the club, Miss Miles, was divided into two grades, and resulted as follows:
A GRADE: 1, Mr. K. Briggs (“Daffodils”); 2, Mr. E. Rogers (“Gladioli”); 3 (equal), Mr. J. Abercrombie (“Diosma”) and Mr. E. Rogers.
B GRADE: 1, Mrs. R. Abercrombie (“Centrepiece”); 2, Mr. F. Williams (“Blossom”).

The “B” Grade has been specially introduced to allow new members the opportunity of competing against members of their own grade. Success depends upon entries, and all members are asked to submit prints.

Pending the construction of an up-to-date club room, promised by the Council of the Gordon Institute of Technology, the club is holding its meetings in the T.E. Bostock Memorial lecture room on the first Wednesday of each month.

With a membership of approximately 25 persons, the club will presently arrange its syllabus for the first half of 1949.

On Saturday afternoon, 13th November, an outing was held at Fyansford, near Geelong. Members found abundant pictorial material in the vicinity, but unfortunately an unsightly telegraph pole and wires hindered any attempt to photograph the old stone bridge designed by the late Sir John Monash. Nevertheless, a good number of “landscape” and “river scene” shots was secured by the members, who later enjoyed “billy” afternoon tea.

The Secretary (Mr. F.A. Williams, “Norwood", 33 Elizabeth Street, Newtown, Geelong) will be pleased to hear from any ex-members who may read this account.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
There was a very encouraging attendance at the first meeting for 1949 in the T. E. Bostock Memorial Room on Wednesday, 2nd February, at which the President (Mr. Potter) presided.

The Diamond Jubilee Re-union Social evening is dated for April 27th, and a club outing is planned for March 26th to Prince’s Bridge—one of the prettiest parts of the Barwon River in Geelong.

Seven entrants contributed 18 prints for the “Open” competition judged by Mr. Pockley, one of Geelong’s professional photographers. He congratulated the competitors on the high standard of their work and made the awards as follows: 1, “Hillside Idyll” (Mr. J. Abercrombie); 2, “The Old Home” (Mr. E.P. Bradley); 3, “Landscape” (Mr. S. Hannam).

The Association is believed to be the oldest society of its kind in the British Colonies and, in view of the re-union Social to be held on April 27th, the Secretary would be pleased to hear from any ex-members who may read this account; also to receive any photographs or items of appropriate historical interest (on loan or otherwise) concerning the early days of the Club.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The Gordon College Association was established in Geelong in 1889 and thereby believes itself to be the oldest amateur photographic club in the British Commonwealth. Some detailed accounts of the early days of the Association appeared in this magazine in July for 1939 and June 1949.

More recently the history and status of the Association received lengthy publicity in the shape of an attractive half-page feature story in the Geelong Advertiser for April 29th, 1950. The account also included photographs of Mr. H.L.S. Potter (President), Mr. F.A. Williams (Secretary), as well as an excellent example of character portraiture by Mr. E.J.R. Taylor.

The concluding paragraph runs: All who have been associated with this body seem determined to make “reality” the motto of the Association, “We grasp the shadow”.

We commend this fine group to all photographic enthusiasts in the Geelong area.

GORDON PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
The activities of the Gordon Photographic Society over the past few months have been largely of a practical nature. Many of the meeting nights have been devoted to demonstrations and lectures by the more advanced members and others experienced in photography. These include Mr. G. Stephens (Contact Printing); Mr. E. Rogers and Mr. W.J. Porter (Enlarging); Mr. S. Hill (Table Top Photography), Photographing Pottery, with the assistance of Mr, Felix (Pottery Instructor, Gordon Institute).

Mr. E. Rotherham and other members of the Melbourne Camera Club also gave some very instructive talks.

Owing to the greater interest being taken in color photography, several evenings have been devoted to the projection of members color slides. Mr. D. Webb (Art Master, Geelong College), gave a very interesting talk entitled “Color Harmony”.
