THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
A meeting of members of the The Grafton Camera Club was held at the Town Hall on Tuesday, evening, Mr. H. Jordan occupying the chair. The Secretary announced that twelve members had been enrolled, and quite a host had signified their intention to do so at once. It was resolved to call the club "The Grafton Camera Club", to include both amateur and professional photographers. Rules were then adopted and a syllabus outlined. It was resolved to ask Mr. W. Stevenson to give an ocular demonstration of flashlight photography at the next meeting, and Mr. Grouzelle one on the advantages of different instruments and lenses at a later period. Mr. Jordan offered the free use of the Criterion Hall for meetings, which was accepted with thanks. It was resolved to hold regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, and to arrange an excursion some Wednesday afternoon before winter.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
A resident of Cowper writes to ask whether residents of other centers will be admitted to the privileges of the The Grafton Camera Club on payment of admission fees, etc. On referring the question to the secretary we learn that the institution not only allows this, but he would be only too willing to enroll any person living outside of Grafton in the The Grafton Camera Club and see that they are extended all the rights and privileges townspeople enjoy. He also informed us that Mr. W. Stevenson has consented to give an address on flashlight photography at the Criterion Hall to members of the Club next meeting, and to give an ocular demonstration of the same. Mr. Grouzelle has also signified his intention to address members on matters of interest at a later date.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
The Grafton Camera Club, yet in its infancy, ought to be a success, and prove a boon in the way of a hobby for those who have any taste for photography. The committee of the club talk of getting up river excursions, so as to enable its members to travel up and down the river and take snap-shots and views of the many beauty spots of the Clarence. Some very pleasant outings, and some charming views, should be the result and it is to be hoped the club will be patronized, and turn out some first-class work. The club is to include both professional and amateur photographers, and the work of its members is to be exhibited to the public.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
A very successful meeting of The Grafton Camera Club was held on Tuesday evening and was attended by about 15 members, including three ladies.

Mr. W. Stevenson, of the Vice-Regal Studios, opened the proceedings with a lecture and demonstration on flashlight photography, followed by a lesson on development, which proved very interesting, and some very fine pictures were produced by the members present, the instructive portion of the program was finished and general business was proceeded with.

Mr. Stevenson, Patron of the Club was voted to the Chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. An apology was read from Dr. Ventry-Smith. Correspondence as read was received on Mr. Jordan's motion. The Secretary reported an excursion, which was deferred to a more opportune time, the weather being too cold at present. Mr. Jordan offered his dark room gratis to members of the Club and Mr. Strauss moved that Mr. Jordan's offer be accepted with thanks, seconded by Mr. Hockey. Mr. Shakespeare's motion - that next meeting be held a month hence to which members be invited to bring photos taken during the mouth for exhibition and criticism ; also, to bring untoned prints so that a demonstration on the method of toning be given. It was also decided to ask Mr. Stevenson to attend and supervise the demonstration. Mr. Hockey moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Stevenson for the address and lecture. This was seconded by Mr. Jordan and carried by acclamation. Mr. Stevenson, in responding said it afforded him much pleasure to give a demonstration of this kind and he would with pleasure attend next meeting and assist as desired. The Chairman then moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Jordan for the use of the hall, which was also carried by acclamation and suitably acknowledged.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
The usual monthly meeting of The Grafton Camera Club took place last Friday evening and was attended by a fair roll up of members. An invitation was accepted from Mr. Grouzelle to display the art of toning photographic prints at his studios in Fitzroy-street. A profitable and highly interesting hour was accordingly spent in Mr. Grouzelle's dark room, all present being delighted at the very complete and edifying nature of the demonstration.

At a subsequent meeting it was resolved to confer with members of the "Grafton Fine Art Society" (of which Mrs. Beatson was present by invitation) for the purpose of arranging for a joint exhibition this year. In the event of this being effected it was agreed that the club should arrange to give four prizes — one for professionals, one for the amateur championship of the North Coast, and two for collections. The secretary was instructed to at once communicate with different gentlemen and firms relative to the prizes.

Before concluding a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Grouzelle for his very instructive demonstration on toning, and the use of his studio and chemicals to demonstrate the same, also that bromide printing be the subject for next meeting.

A parcel containing photographic printing papers, developers, toners, and literature, kindly forwarded by Messrs Baker and Rouse, was distributed by the secretary to members.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
ART EXHIBITION
A meeting of members of the "Grafton Fine Art Society" and The Grafton Camera Club took place at South Grafton last Thursday evening for the purpose of considering whether and if so on what lines, a joint exhibition could be held this year. Mr. -.M. Shakespeare was voted to the chair. Mr. P. Sanders, secretary of the Camera Club, gave information as to what his Club had decided in the matter, which was that it would arrange for four prizes to be given for photographic work, in which Clubs from other centers (particularly Maclean and Lismore) could compete if the "Grafton Fine Art Society" would in turn find space for the exhibits and undertake the usual responsibilities of running the exhibition. This offer was considered a liberal one by those present, and on the Society's master (Mr. Cox) and secretary (Mrs. Beatson) vouchsafing the opinion that the Society would have sufficient new work for an exhibition, the proposed combination was adopted. It was thereupon decided to hold the joint exhibition on Wednesday and Thursday, 9th and 10th September, and that a musical program, together with refreshments, be provided each evening.

The usual monthly meeting of The Grafton Camera Club took place in Mr. Jordan’s Criterion Hall, on Tuesday, 21st July, and was the best attended meeting yet held, Mr. W. Stevenson presiding. The subject for the meeting was Bromide Printing, and much to the delight as well as the edification of all present, Mr. Stevenson undertook the part of instructor. All present were duly initiated into the practice of developing bromide prints, and each member was afforded the opportunity of trying his hand at the game on the spot. After the demonstration a meeting was held. Mr. Shakespeare and secretary reported result of the Club’s deputation to the Fine Art Society re holding an exhibition in conjunction with same, and it was resolved, on Mr. McLennan’s motion, to endorse arrangement made. The meeting then proceeded to draft a program of prizes for the photographic portion of exhibition. The treasurer, secretary, and Mr. Shakespeare were appointed a committee to carry out all further arrangements in conjunction with the society. THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
The annual exhibition of the "Grafton Fine Art Society" and The Grafton Camera Club is to eventuate next Wednesday and Thursday in the Parish Hall and gives promise to be a record Show. For the first time the public are to be presented with the spectacle of an Exhibition of hand paintings and photographs, provided by amateurs from all parts of the State and by pupils of many different tutors. This, in itself, should prove interesting and edifying, while affording a collection of pictures for inspection the like and number of which has perhaps never been got together before in any center outside the metropolis. In addition to the Exhibition a musical program will be provided each evening, while those attending on Thursday afternoon will be provided with afternoon tea. We might add that a number of the pictures and photographs can be purchased by admirers. We have been asked to specially request members of the Society and Club to be in attendance at the Hall to-morrow night and Wednesday to assist in hanging and arranging the pictures.

LOWER CLARENCE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
At the meeting of the Lower Clarence Photographic Society on Friday evening there were present: Messrs J. Kane (President), W.J. Dunnet, W. Hutton, J. Henson, H.T.J. Dawson. M. Ivory, H. Curtis, Forrester, J. Packer, and E. Campbell (Hon.Secretary). Correspondence was received from the The Grafton Camera Club re their forthcoming exhibition.

Accounts from the ADVOCATE, £1 10s. A.H. Pearce 1s, and stamps 3s 2d, were passed for payment.

A prize of £1 1s was offered by Mr. J. Kane to be competed for at the forthcoming Spring Show. It was decided that it be confined to amateur members of The Grafton Camera Club and Lower Clarence Photographic Society, competition pictures to be a collection of six Clarence River views. A prize of 10s 6d by Mr. E. Campbell is to be open to amateur members of the Lower Clarence Photographic Society only, subject — most humorous picture. Similar conditions were imposed for a 10s 6d prize by Mr. W.J. Dunnet for most interesting view.

Votes of thanks were accorded to the donors of prizes.

Two new members were elected to the Society.

Some discussion then took place regarding the Grafton Show on Wednesday and Thursday, for which a number of entries were made by members.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
"Grafton Fine Art Society"
ANNUAL EXHIBITION

The annual exhibition of the Grafton "Grafton Fine Art Society", in conjunction (for the first time) with the The Grafton Camera Club, was opened by Archdeacon Moxon, at the Parish Hall last evening, and can, in every way, be voted an unqualified success.

Willing hands had assisted in getting ready and hanging the large number of pictures and photographs intended for show, while special attention had been given towards lighting the hall, the result being that at the time of opening every thing was ready for inspection, and looked its best. Both the east and West (side) walls of the hall were taken up with pictures, hung row on row to the eaves, while the plat- form end was arranged to harmonize with the proceedings — three parts being screened off with a fine oil painting and the balance left for those taking part to sing or speak from, pot plants being brought into requisition to aid in making the stage look bright and inviting. The opposite end was devoted to photographs.

Looking round one was struck both with the quality as well as quantity of work done by the exhibitors. The center space on either side of the fine art display was alloted to one picture each from the brushes of Mesdames Beatson and Archdeacon Moxon, both commanding a great deal of attention. But, perhaps, the best picture shown was that of Ibis, by Mr. E. Cox. The coloring and pictorial effect of the pictures shew a marked advance on any previous exhibition and speak in the most eloquent manner of the progress made by members as well as to the ability of Mr. Cox as a master and instructor of the art. A conspicuous feature of the exhibition was the number of pictures hung from other centers.

The photographic competition was a very marked success, some 112 exhibitors entering for the eight prizes offered. All the chief prizes were won by competitors outside the district. Mr. Lamy, the genial postmaster at Maclean, was most fortunate in this respect, he winning the three chief prizes, including the championship, although pressed hard for this by Mr. H. Jordan. Two other meritorious winners were Messrs. G.A. Castilow and N.C. Hewett, of Lismore.

Owing to the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, the president of the Art Society declared the Show open, and in a few well chosen words made mention of the labors of those exhibiting (and especially of those of the Secretary, Mrs, Beatson, Master, and Mr. Cox) in providing the show and to the public for lending their patronage to it.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
ART EXHIBITION
The annual exhibition of the "Grafton Fine Art Society" and The Grafton Camera Club was continued in the Parish Hall last Thursday afternoon and night. There was a record attendance in the afternoon, principally composed of ladies, to inspect the work shown. Expressions of surprise were heard on every hand at the magnitude of the exhibition and the merit of the work shown at it. Refreshments were provided, and altogether a pleasant and profitable afternoon spent.

The attendance in the evening was supplemented by the attendance of the Mayor of Maclean, Alderman Kane; Mr Lamy, Post Master at Maclean, and the Hon.Secretary of the Maclean Camera Club. Amongst the many splendid pictures shown by the "Grafton Fine Art Society" that were greatly admired was a group from the brush of Mr. E.J. Cox, and especially his masterpiece "The Ibis". This splendid production, we might add, was purchased by a well known judge of art present for an artist in Sydney, and entitles its author to claim rank with our best painters in the State. The "Grafton Fine Art Society" can certainly be congratulated on having such a talented, though retiringly modest, gentleman as their master. The pictures shown by Mrs. Beatson, Archdeacon Moxon, Miss Fraser, and a host of others, particularized in our last, were also very favorably commented on.

The photographic competitions proved, perhaps, the most interesting part of the exhibition, some of the pictures shown being good enough to win in the metropolis. The largest exhibitors were Mr. H. Jordan, of this city, and Mr. Lamy, of Maclean. The former exhibited some very valuable pictures and went to no end of expense and trouble in aiding the show, but he chose a tone too light in his photos and this lack of strength lost him the honors. Mr. Lamy, on the other hand, went for depth in tone and scored in consequence. The same can be said of the very excellent pictures shown by Messrs Miller and Gostelow.

The prizes were presented on Thursday evening by the Venerable Archdeacon Moxon, who, in the course of a very able address, complimented the "Grafton Fine Art Society" and The Grafton Camera Club on uniting and promoting such a fine exhibition, and expressed the hope that next year would not only find paintings classified for competition, but the exhibition to embrace other branches such as sculpture; modeling and fancy work.

The following prizes were then presented:
BEST SIX PHOTOGRAPHS: Theo. Lamy, Maclean, 1; Norman Hewitt, Lismore, 2; P.C. Sanders, Grafton, 3.
THREE BEST LANDSCAPES: H. Miller, Grafton, 1; N. Hewett, 2; G.A. Gostelow, Lismore, 3.
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP: T. Lamy 1; H. Jordan 2; P. Saunders 3.
BEST ENLARGEMENT: T.M. Shakespeare 1; P.C. Saunders 2; E. Stevenson 3.
ANIMAL STUDY: T. Lamy 1; W.B. Boyce, Taree 2; A.J.H. Elliott 3.
CONTACT PRINT'S: G.A. Gostelow 1; P.C. Saunders 2; E. Stevenson 3.
POST CARDS: E. Stevenson 1; H. Elliott 2; T. Lamy 3.
HUMOROUS PICTURE: A.J. Elliott.

Mr. L. Grouzelle was also made a present by The Grafton Camera Club, in recognition of his services as judge, and Mr P. Saunders of the camera won by Mr Shakespeare (which had been handed back to the Club) in recognition of his services as Hon.Secretary.

A musical program was also provided, towards which the following contributed: Miss McLeod, Mr. Shakespeare, Mr. Lobban, Miss Campbell, Mr. McLennan, Mrs. Rush, Mr. G. See and Mr. Dellow.

We cannot close this report with out mentioning the services rendered by the Hon.Secretaries of the "Grafton Fine Art Society" and The Grafton Camera Club [Mrs. Beatson and Mr Saunders] for the way they worked to bring the show to a successful conclusion. It was entirely due to their efforts, backed up by those of such willing workers as Mr. and Mrs. E. Cox, Mrs. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Miss E. Beatson, Miss Beatson, Mr. C. Turner, and at the door Messrs. Lardner and Low, that the exhibition proved a model and record one, and passed off with out a hitch of any kind.

GRAFTON SPRING FLOWER SHOW AND INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION
The Grafton Spring Flower Show and Industrial Exhibition, under the auspices of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Guild, was opened in the Rink yesterday by his Worship the Mayor, Samuel See. The weather was ideal. The attendance both in the afternoon and in the evening was large, last night's attendance being estimated at considerably above 1000. The takings were: Afternoon, £9 2s 3d; evening, £33 1s 6d; stalls, upwards of £35. The Young Dick brought a fair number from the lower river.

At the official opening an apology for the Rev. A. Fraser's absence was received.

On entering the mammoth building, the eye was struck with the magnificence and artistic nature of the exhibits.

Everything was orderly and even the minutest bud was cleverly and artistically displayed and arranged to show to the best advantage.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMS
Several members of The Grafton Camera Club intend exhibiting at the approaching Maclean Spring Show.

Mr. W. Stevenson, the popular as well as progressive proprietor of the Vice-Regal studios, has recently landed from America all the apparatus and chemicals for the production of button photographs as well as several new departures in the art not yet introduced to country centers. His Christmas productions this year should be both fine and novel.
Mr. H. Jordan, who has definitely decided to open his new studio on King's Birthday, left for Sydney on Saturday to personally select the balance of his outfit. Mr. Jordan recently purchased a forty guinea Ross symmetrical lens for portrait work.

From a note received from Mr. Brady's local representative we gather that although the operator of the Clarence Studios left for the metropolis some days ago and the doors have not since been open, as usual, for business, they are not "closed" as stated in our last and in a notice that appeared in the lobby of the studio itself. However, this is a fact we are very pleased to know. Presumably Mr. Byrne himself is attending to customers.

Mr. D.J. Grant, the architect, expects to have Mr. L. Grouzelle's new studios, at the rear of Mrs A. McDonald's ladies emporium, completed by next Thursday. Mr. Grouzelle, whose reputation as an artist is well known, has an entirely new outfit, and is sanguine as to his future success.

THE GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
MACLEAN SPRING SHOW
A SUCCESSFUL EVENT CERTAIN

At present everything indicates that the Spring Show to be held at Maclean on Monday will be by far the most successful Spring Exhibition held under the auspices of the Society. The season is a most favorable one for spring products, which will result in the bringing together of the finest exhibits of the season yet shown here. The day being a public holiday, will be taken advantage of by the public of the whole district to visit the Show. The interest and enthusiasm displayed by exhibitors and public is the greatest on record. All these point to a most successful Show, and the forecast of success is no mere conjecture, but is supported by the entries already received.

Numerous exhibits are coming from up river, including work from many members of The Grafton Camera Club in the fine art section.

CLARENCE PASTORAL AND AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY
ANNUAL SHOW 1904

The thirty-seventh annual exhibition of the Clarence Pastoral and Agricultural Society was held on Wednesday and Thursday last.

The exhibit which appeared to attract interest was a complete range of photographs of prominent townsmen from cabinets to enlargements, shown by Mr. W. Stevenson, of the Vice-regal Studios, supported by other entries in the same class made by several members of The Grafton Camera Club.

GRAFTON RE-VISITED
AMONG THE PICTURES
(BY ORARA)

Next direction in which movement is most noticeable is in photography. The Grafton Camera Club flourished for a time. A good many things in Grafton, and in many places, flourish for a time. The difficulty is to keep the flourish up to concert pitch afterwards. There's a good deal of a bottle of soda water about human nature, whether the said human nature is in Grafton, or anywhere else. Human nature is pretty much the same thing wherever you find it. So is soda water. Draw the cork, and what follows ? Sparkle, fizz, bubble, animation, energy. Then there's a reaction. Deadness. It isn't hard to draw the cork, anyhow, not after you have learned the trick. It is not hard to start the bubble - a soda water bubble or a human bubble. Do you catch on to what I mean ? but it is hard to keep the bubble alive.

------------------------------------------

One man will go out to-day with good intention in his heart, and a printer's dodger, or a town crier's ball, in his hand. With these, aided by a little push on his own part, he'll quickly enough get a little knot of people around him. And they'll become interested quickly. They'll form a debating club if they are asked to, or a kennel club, or a pigeon club, or a camera club, or a poultry club. Doesn't matter much what it is. They'll start it. And they'll rush it warmly and enthusiastically at the start. After a little while the sparkle and bubble goes out. And what follows is flatness. Carbonic acid gas is not always an admirable quality in human nature, but plenty of human nature does not keep alive because it has too little of it. And in consequence thereof, dog clubs, and cat clubs, and rooster clubs, and hen clubs, and geranium clubs, and a large variety of similar interesting and very useful and highly to be commended institutions die off in infancy.

------------------------------------------

But The Grafton Camera Club bustled along very well, and good work was produced. In photography there is not much left here to take. The The Grafton Camera Club has taken everything in and about Grafton that is worth taking. A few of the very early picture's were enough to take one's breath away. But The Grafton Camera Club made rapid improvement, and some very creditable work has been turned out by members.

------------------------------------------

One townsman, Mr. H. Jordan, has launched, fully into photography. You may have your picture taken there now, if you wish. Also, he has an interesting collection of very pretty views - his own work. They are a credit to him. His studio is in Prince-street, where, by the way, he has one of the best record instruments (musical) that I've heard.

------------------------------------------

Mr. W. Stevenson was probably the first man to vitalize photography in Grafton. He has been here for - well, I understand that he did not know much about Australia, or anywhere else, when he first arrived here. He has been honored with "sittings" by vice-regality. Also he has photographed nearly all the people who are among the best-looking in Grafton, and nearly all those who are not. If I were a photographer methinks I'd strongly advise some men never, to be photographed. A face the same color and the same expression as a pound of butter never looks well in a picture. I never had myself "done": anyhow, never out of deliberate malice aforethought.

------------------------------------------

There is yet another photographic studio "Grouzelle's". He is exhibiting some fine specimens of work. His grouping is very good : some of his pictures are particularly good. But it must be said that taken all round the professional photography of Grafton is high class. Some of Mr. Grouzelle's views of the Hospital, the Hospital staff; also his photographs of local residents, are of considerable merit. His studio is in Prince-street.

------------------------------------------

I am hesitating over the present paragraph : don't quite know how to begin. It is to be about birds. Birds in water colors. Not Cayley's birds: Cox's birds. I am Indebted to Mr. Cox, and to his agreeable wife, for an interesting hour in their studio in Bacon-street. It was an eye-opener. If you don't already know, perhaps you'd scarcely credit, that this enthusiastic, hard, and most undoubtedly capable worker has water-colors of some 150 distinct varieties of North Coast birds. Caley made his name famous as a painter of birds, and although I once knew him very well, and saw much of his very best work, what I did not know was that much of it had been done on the Clarence, and with the present subject of this paragraph, Mr. Cox. The latter is a self-taught man: his hobby formerly was oils and animals. Now it is waters and birds. Done in spare moments, and mostly at night, the effect he has produced is quite above what might be expected. Every bird is painted from nature : it is first prepared by Mrs. Cox, and then this born artist gets to work at it, working on the same lines as Cayley worked, and producing, all round, commendably good results. In all art work one thing is occasionally done better than another, yet in Mr. Cox's work there is uniformity, and some of his birds are - anyhow in the writer's estimation, decidedly better than many one to-day sees exhibited in Sydney over Cayley's name. If Mr, Cox's birds were better and more widely known there would surely be a largely increased demand for them.

GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
A meeting of the Grafton Camera Club was held last night when the President, Mr. Stevenson, gave a demonstration of developing plates to a large muster of members. The demonstration was very instructive and was much appreciated by the members, who warmly thanked Mr. Stevenson. The benefits of this club are numerous to those interested in amateur photography, while the membership is exceedingly moderate, viz., 1s. per month, practically the whole of which is devoted to prizes in competitions among the members. Mr. Percy Sanders is the secretary of the club and will be pleased to enroll more members.

GRAFTON CAMERA CLUB
Members of the Grafton Camera Club assembled at the Clarence Studio on Wednesday night, when the President (Mr. W. Stevenson) gave an interesting demonstration of the detail connected with the development of plates. There was a good attendance of members, who watched with interest the development of a batch of plates with various developers. In the course of his demonstration Mr. Stevenson explained the action of the different chemicals, and gave a number of useful hints regarding that section of photographic work.

Mr. Sanders, the Hon.Secretary, developed a roll of films showing the peculiarity attaching to that class of work. The demonstration proved useful and most instructive to those present.

It is intended to arrange outdoor gatherings in order that the members may afford each other assistance in acquiring skill in the work of taking views.

Further demonstrations of developing, printing, and toning will also be arranged for.

At the last meeting of the committee of the Grafton Camera Club, at which the President, Mr. W. Stevenson, presided, it was decided to hold two competitions during the month.

Messrs. Baker and Rouse wrote, offering a prize of 7s 6d for the three best gaslight prints. The club decided to increase the prize to ten shillings, and on the suggestion of the President it was agreed to divide this sum into two prizes of five shillings each, one for the three best gaslight prints, and the other for the best subject selected.

The President donated a prize of 5s for best three untoned P.O.P. prints, the competition being restricted to Junior members of the club who have only possessed a camera for three months. Mr. Stevenson will act as judge in both competitions. It was decided to purchase a suitable dark-room lamp, and to arrange a demonstration of gaslight printing during the week.

PHOTOGRAPHERS FRIGHTENED OFF
Both local and open photography sections were rather disappointing, said the judge, Mr. Owen Sanders.

Mr. Sanders said he felt many former entrants had been frightened off by outside competition.

Although most of this year's prizes were taken by entries from other centers, he knew there were many fine photos taken locally which could compete successfully enough, probably, to scoop the pool.

The usual large display from the Grafton Camera Club was missing this year, said Mr. Sanders.

Prints generally were lacking in mounting and general preparation. Many lacked depth.

Mr. Sanders said he hoped local interest could be encouraged to build up the section.

Most successful competitors were, in the open section, Mr. A.G. Snow, of Mullumbimby, and Mr. A.T. Murray, of Edmonton; in the local section, Mr. Whale, of Copmanhurst, and Mr. Cousemacher, of Ulmarra.
