The usual fortnightly meeting of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Association was held at the Association Room on Thursday 19th October at 8pm. There was a large attendance of members, the subject for the night being a very interesting one. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Arrangements were made for holding another tour on 9th November in conjunction with the Young Men's Friendly Society. Rev. F.E. Haviland gave a brief and interesting account of his meeting with the Sydney Amateur Photographers. The Hon.Secretary, Mr. Stening and Hon.Treasurer, Mr. Jago, were especially kind and gave him a cordial welcome. They stated that the Gulgong association is the only one of its kind in N.S.W. outside of Sydney.

Mr. Stening promised to forward at an early date the manuscript of Judge Docker's lecture on stereoscopic photography. With practical help like this from the parent society, Gulgong amateurs ought to make good head-way. It is rumored that a Camera Club is likely to be started at Cudal, near Orange. Mr. E. Garling promised to bring in for the use of members a large number of back numbers of the Photographic Journal. Mr. J. Fletcher offered the use of two or three forms for the room, which were accepted with thanks. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. H. Cross for his present of a table. The President, Rev. F.E. Haviland, then gave a demonstration of Bromide enlargement. The subject, a view of Cudgebegong River, was well treated and as it was the first enlargement made at the room, Mr. Haviland presented it to the Association. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the demonstrator. The next meeting will be on Thursday 2nd November. Subject: mixing of developers and a demonstration of developing, by Mr. E. Garling.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
ANNUAL EXHIBITION

The annual exhibition of the Photographic Society of New South Wales, which has been thrown open this year to Inter-Colonial competitors, was officially opened at the rooms of the Art Society, 70 Pitt Street, yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a representative attendance. His Honor Judge Docker (President of the Photographic Society of New South Wales), in opening the proceedings, explained that, owing to the unavoidable absence of his Excellency the Governor, Sir James Fairfax had consented to open the exhibition. There was a new departure this year, in as much as the exhibition was open to competitors from the different colonies. Consequently, there was a great increase in exhibitors, New Zealand being especially well represented. It would be found that some of the most valuable prizes had gone beyond the colony. But the society did not grudge these competitors their success. On the contrary, it welcomed them, for what had been lost in prizes had been gained in the comparison which would be drawn with their own work and from the higher standard which had been shown. Sir James Fairfax, in declaring the exhibition open, referred to the fact that the society had been in existence for four years and had held four exhibitions, each of which showed progress. It must be gratifying to see the exhibition so successful. It had been stated that photography was not a fine art, but he was of opinion that in order to produce the best, the operator must have a good idea of art. As an amateur photographer himself and one who had taken a great interest in art, it gave him much pleasure to be present and open the exhibition. Mr. Alfred Allen moved a vote of thanks to Sir James Fairfax, which was conveyed by His Honor Judge Docker. The exhibition of photos, was a very varied one, the entries being very numerous. As it was open to Inter-Colonial competitors, the following societies were represented:

Dunedin Photographic Society,
Queensland Amateur Photographic Society,
South Australian Photographic Association,
Amateur Photographic Association of Victoria,
Wellington Camera Club New Zealand,

Higinbotham, Dunedin (New Zealand); "What Is It?" by Mr. R. Porteous, Working Men's Photographic Club; "Study in Color" a yachting scene, by Mr. H.V. Lawes, Photographic Society of New South Wales; "Flower Study" by Mr. A. Hamilton, Dunedin (New Zealand); and "The Laundress" by Mr. F.A. Joyner, South Australia. GULGONG AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
NEW SOUTH WALES
THE FIRST EXHIBITION
The first exhibition of the recently formed Gulgong Amateur Photographic Association, held on Wednesday of last week, was successful beyond the rosiest anticipations of any of the promoters, and from an artistic point of view did credit to the exhibitors, serving as an admirable illustration of the great stride made in photography of recent years, and of what an elevating pastime the use of the camera is. The opening ceremony was performed by his Worship the Mayor of Gulgong (Ald. R. Rouse) who expressed surprise at the merit of the exhibits, congratulated the Association on the success of its initial display, and hoped to see it long continue prosperously. Much of the attractiveness of the exhibition centered in the non competitive displays, the chief of which was made by his Honor Judge Docker, who is patron of the club, and showed many admirable photographs, stereographs, and lantern slides, which included numerous scenes from the Warrumbungles. The stereoscopic views were a great center of attraction, and people seemed to become transfixed with enchantment around the table on which the glasses and views were placed.

Miss Dunbar Langbridge also added much to the interest of affairs by showing a very nice collection of oil paintings of her own execution which were greatly admired.

For competition there were two sections: one for all comers and the other for members of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Association only. In many classes the competition was indeed keen, and the exhibits of great merit, so that the judges, Mr. W. Hutchinson, of the Gulgong Studio, and Mr. G.W. Kenniwell, of the Alpha Studio, Mudgee, had no simple task in the allotment of awards. Their decisions however, seem to have given general satisfaction both among exhibitors and spectators. There are one or two matters which the Association might give attention to in the drawing up of the schedule for next exhibition, one being the provision of separate classes for silver and platinotype prints, and the other in the class for studies in still life, where a division should be made for pictures including and excluding animal life. Considering that this was the Association’s first exhibition, they are, indeed, to be congratulated upon having presented a schedule in which so little room for amendment suggests itself. Appended we have pleasure in furnishing a complete list of the awards:

Scott, it was decided to join in with the Ballarat Camera Club, Victoria, re the matter of exchanging prints, for criticism and exhibition. The subject of the quarterly competition, lantern slides, was then dealt with. The following was decided on: The competition to take place in the Prince of Wales Theatre on Monday, 8th October, the slides to be shown with the aid of acetylene gas. The Association decided to ask the following gentlemen to act as judges: Messrs. Hutchison and A.H. Hardwick to judge photographically and Messrs. R. Rouse, C. Harris and the Rev. Mr. Doig to judge pictorially. All members to be admitted free on producing card of membership, non-members sixpence admission. All entry forms to be in the hands of the Hon.Secretary by the 30th September. An advertisement is to be put in the local paper a few days before competition. The arranging of a musical program was left in the capable hands of Mr. C.R. Young jun. As most of the slides will be of local scenes, the competition ought to prove very interesting. The next meeting will be Thursday 27th September.

The quarterly competition in connection with the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Association took place in the Prince of Wales Theatre on Monday 8th October, in the presence of a large gathering. The subject was lantern slides. The proceeding were opened by a selection by the Gulgong orchestra, which also played at various intervals during the evening. In his opening remarks, the president (Rev. F.E. Haviland) explained the object of the competition and thanked the public for the generous support given by them to the association. The first section shown were the competitive slides, which were followed by a large number of non-competitive. Keen interest was taken in each picture as it was thrown upon the screen, the various ones of favor getting hearty applause. A part of the non competitive section, "People We Meet in Gulgong", created great surprise and amusement. The judging was in the hands of Messrs. C. Harris, Voss and Dr. Bennett, who judged pictorially and Mr. Hardwick, of Mudgee, who judged photographically. These gentlemen fulfilled their onerous duties to the complete satisfaction of all.

Following are the results: Marks Gained.

Mr. A.P. Lambert — Set 1, photographically (10 max.), 9.25; pictorially (40 max.), 30.6; percentage, 79.7.

The annual fortnightly meeting of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Association was last Thursday night, at Mr. Chris Young's, jun., rooms, Rev. F.E. Haviland (president) in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts to Mr. E. Garling for goods from Harrington and Co £2 5s 11d and 11s to Mr. Florance, Hon.Secretary, were passed for payment. Two new members were proposed, Mr. C.E. Hilton and Mr. P. Brophy, school master, Beryl. The former member will be a decided acquisition to the society, being well up in photography. The president, who acted as judge in connection with the amateur photography section at the Exhibition in Mudgee last week, announced the results. Gratification was expressed at the local members success, Mr. Lambert and Mr. Brown being the only two competing, the former being very successful. It was decided to exchange prints with the Ballarat Camera Club, same to be handed into Hon.Secretary by Wednesday next. The most serious business of the meeting was Mr. Florance's resignation as Hon.Secretary, who has filled the position ever since the initiation of the club with credit to himself and the society. The chairman asked him to reconsider his decision. Mr. Florance stated that he had weighed the matter well and the above is final. However, he would do his utmost to further the interests of the society as an ordinary member. The chairman moved that a vote of thanks be accorded to the retiring Hon.Secretary, the same to be recorded in the minute book. Carried unanimously. Mr. W.J. Brown was then elected to the position. Mr. Edgar Garling decided to give a demonstration developing kalyte paper, at next meeting this gentleman also caused much merriment amongst members present with some pictures taken by him lately during a picnic party.

The usual meeting of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Association was held on Thursday evening, 22nd November, when the following members were present Rev. F.E. Haviland, president (chair) and Messrs. Lambert, Scott, Florance, Morris, Hilton, Fletcher, Garling and Hon.Secretary. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Hon.Secretary then read a petition which the president received from the editor of the Australian Photographic Journal, Sydney, in connection with the federal celebrations. After being fully discussed it was agreed that the president sign same and return to Mr. Hill Griffiths. Mr. Lambert's motion re honorary members was the next item of interest. The question was thoroughly debated and all unanimously agreed that the rule relating to honorary members be rescinded. After a discussion the meeting decided to vote Mr. Cross, storekeeper to the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Association, the sum of £3 as a reserve, which will enable him to keep up the Society's stock, any extra charges or freight connected therewith to be paid by the treasurer. The Rev. Haviland then proceeded with his demonstration on "Re-touching". This gentleman went through everything carefully, explaining each item in this particular branch. It was undoubtedly the most interesting demonstration yet given. A hearty vote of thanks by acclamation was accorded Mr. Haviland. Mr. Lambert will give a demonstration at next meeting on "Intensifying".

The fortnightly meeting of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Society was held on Thursday 6th December, at Mr. Chris. Young's rooms. In the absence of the president, Mr. Morris was elected chairman. The following members were present: Messrs. Lambert, Scott, Young, Florance and the Hon.Secretary. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. There was no correspondence or business for the meeting. Mr. Lambert proceeded with his demonstration, "Intensification of of a Negative", which was ably demonstrated and fully explained. All questions were satisfactorily answered. The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to Mr. Lambert.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Society was held at the club's old room on Thursday night last. Mr. Chris. Young having disposed of his business it was necessary for the society to revert to the old quarters. The following members were present: Mr. Lambert (in the chair). Messrs. Scott, Morris, Hilton, Cross and the Hon.Secretary. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A vote of thanks was unanimously accorded Mr. Young for the use of the room for the last six months. A letter and parcel of photos for criticism from the Ballarat Camera Club was received. This club's criticism on the local member's work, which was sent over a little while back, was very satisfactory. There were no entries for last quarter's competition, so it was agreed by the meeting to amalgamate that quarter with the present one, which will now consist, of architecture, clouds, landscape and camera sets. The meeting then terminated. The hot weather is very disastrous on photography locally.

Considering the number of amateur photographers that there are in Mudgee it is a matter of wonder that no effort has been made to form an association on a line similar to that which exists in Gulgong. The Gulgong Amateur Photographic Society has made remarkable headway in the neighboring town, besides proving a most profitable means of recreation for a large number of people, whose hobby this branch of the art has become.

Thursday 21st February 1901
Page 11 - Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative (NSW)

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Society was held on Thursday evening last at Mr. Cross room, the president being in the chair. Present: Messrs. Hilton, Scott, Florance, Lambert, Garling, Cross and the Hon.Secretary. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The photographic classes to be included in the Gulgong Agricultural Society's schedule, which eventuates next month, were brought forward for discussion and resulted as follows: Class landscape and portraiture (not re-touched), 1 to 14 pictures, will be treated as one entry and hand camera, set 4 prints, the Hon.Secretary to notify the Hon.Secretary of the Show accordingly. By this means a good display can be looked forward to. Mr. Craft, of the Advertiser, generously donated half-a-guinea for portraiture (not re-touched) by an amateur; Mr. Bowman, of Wargundy, £3 3s, for best amateur picture of the Show, to be taken on the ground, first prize £2 2s, second £1 1s. These gentlemen have the sincerest wishes of the Society for their encouragement. Mr. Garling showed some pictures taken in Sydney lately and was very unfortunate in having 11 out of 12 negatives of the Commonwealth Celebrations smashed by a window falling on them. Ballarat Camera Club's work was then put forward for criticism, which was entered into with spirit. The meeting then terminated.

Thursday 2nd May 1901

Lambert and Garling being the only two competitors, the pictures are now in Mr. Hilton's hands. It was decided by Mr. Lambert to give a demonstration at next meeting, similar to one recently given in Tasmania and proved to be most interesting, six exposures, one subject and develop, with six different develops to show which gives the best result. This terminated the meeting.

A fee of 6d will be charged in all competitive sections. It is the Society's intention to secure a Sydney man to judge. The Hon.Secretary was instructed to communicate with Messrs. Baker and Rouse, of Sydney, with a view of getting that firm to undertake the printing of schedules free of charge, they using the covers for advertising. Messrs. Harrington did likewise last year. The matter will be dealt with at the next meeting, at which Mr. Lambert consented to give a demonstration of velox, which will prove interesting and instructive to members who are taking this work up. This concluded the business and the meeting terminated.

GULGONG AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
SECOND ANNUAL EXHIBITION
GRAND SUCCESS

The Second Annual Exhibition of the Gulgong Amateur Photographic Society was opened in the Town Hall, Gulgong, on Wednesday afternoon last. The attendance was very fair and those who were present seemed to take a lively interest in the display of photographs. The exhibits were very numerous and of a varied character and unless a visitor was a judge of photography he would be inclined to imagine that one photo was as good as another, so well and faithfully taken were all the pictures. The exhibits were from all parts of Australia, some from Queensland, Victoria and many towns in the State of New South Wales. Mr. Caro, of the Sydney University, was solo judge and the manner in which he acted left nothing to be cavilled at. The prizes were well distributed, but the "big guns" in Sydney carried most of the palms of victory away. This will make the Gulgong members bestir themselves to greater efforts next year and, as the president said the first prizes will stand a good chance of pulling off the blue tickets in 1902. The number of exhibits easily surpassed that of last year and the work was infinitely superior. The society is a most popular concern and it is the main institution in Gulgong, a society which is well patronized and in which the members take a lively interest. The Rev. F.E. Haviland (President) is a go-ahead gentleman and makes it his business to popularize the association. At night about 200 lantern slides were shown. The vast audience were highly delighted with the views, some of which were of the highest character. The local scenes, especially those taken on polling day were exceptionally clever and caused much merriment. Mr. T.H. Wilkinson, P.M., opened the show and the Rev. F.E. Haviland, after making a very appropriate address, read out the awards which were as follows:

Class A: PORTRAITURE: H.W. Smith (Cassilis) 1, E. Davis (Queensland) 2, A.P. Lambert (Gulgong) certificate of merit; 12 entries.
Class B: LANDSCAPE: J.S. Stenning (Sydney) 1, A.J. Perier (Sydney) 2, A.P. Lambert (Gulgong) certificate of merit; 53 entries.
Class C: SEASCAPE: J. Cummings (Sydney) 1, A.J. Perier 2, J.S. Stenning, certificate of merit; 8 entries.
Class D: ARCHITECTURE: A.H. Hardwick (Mudgee) 1, H.W. Smith (Cassilis) 2; 8 entries.
Class E: STILL LIFE: E.T. Davies (Queensland) 1, E.L. Garling (Springfield) 2; 5 entries.
Class F: ANIMALS: W.T. Brown (Sydney) 1, D. McDonald (Melbourne) 2, E. Davies (Queensland) 3; 15 entries.
Class G: GENRE: A.J. Perier (Sydney) 1, A.L. Hanson (Sydney) 2, A.P. Lambert, certificate of merit; 16 entries.
Glass H: HAND CAMERA: J.C. Daly (Sydney) 1, E.L. Garling (Springfield) 2, E.L. Garling, certificate of merit; 5 entries.
Class J: BROMIDE ENLARGEMENT: W.C. Fischer (Sydney) 1, A.P. Lambert 2 ; 7 entries.
Class K: MAKING ENDS MEET: Miss Maher (Collaroy) 1, Mr. E. Garling (Springfield) 2 ; 6 entries.

In the classes where a certificate has been awarded, it is equivalent for first-class, open to members only. There was a large number of non-competitive exhibits on view, which were greatly admired. A number of colored photographs, taken by Mr. Caro, were thrown on the screen by the aid of a powerful lantern and they were works of art. Altogether over 200 items were put through the lantern, which was worked by the worthy president. The members of the Society are to be congratulated on the success of the show, which will be a wonderful concern in another year or two.
