HOBART Y.M.C.A. CAMERA CLUB
A camera club has been formed in connection with the Hobart Y.M.C.A., to which non Y.M.C.A. members are admitted as members. The office-bearers of the club are:

OFFICE BEARERS 1913 - 1914

PRESIDENT
Mr. CHARLES DAVIS, JUN.

Hon. Secretary:
Mr. Mr. E. Gates
Hon. Treasurer:
Mr. Mr. E. Gates
Committee:
Dr. Hodgkinson
Committee:
Mr. Charles Davis
Committee:
Mr. Gifford
Committee:
Mr. Millar
Committee:
Mr. Storr
Committee:
Mr. Gates

The usual fortnightly meeting was held on 6th February, there being a large attendance. The winner of the monthly competition (seascape subject) was Dr. Hodgkinson.

Mr. Davis gave a very interesting and most instructive talk on the production of lantern slides, describing the apparatus used, and the way to use it to best advantage. He advised the use of a rather diluted developer, as it gave the detail time to appear before the slide gained full density. A large number of slides were thrown on the screen to illustrate the different methods and results.

On 20th February, Dr. Hodgkinson delivered a lecture on the carbon process, which he illustrated in a most practical manner by carrying out the whole process of transferring and developing the prints, so that it was at once made manifest to the members present that there were not so many difficulties to overcome as the average amateur thinks. Our darkroom is at the disposal of visitors, who are always welcome at our meetings.

On 10th April the subject for the evening was “Bromide Printing”. There was no set lecture, the members explaining their own particular methods. The illuminant used varied with the different workers, Dr. Hodgkinson advocating the use of acetylene gas owing to the great actinic value of the light obtained.

Mr. Robinson advised the use of an incandescent gas burner, with a diffusing screen of tissue paper. The use of an ordinary candle was also advocated, as it gave an almost unvarying light, and was a great help to the occasional worker.

Metol-Quinol and Amidol were the favorite developers, although one member pinned his faith on Rytol in no uncertain terms. Some new members were given very useful hints in Bromide work by the older hands, and will no doubt derive great benefit from the evening.

On 24th April the secretary gave a talk on retouching, explaining that as a plate was almost color blind, it was often necessary to retouch the negative.

The processes of applying the medium, sharpening the pencil, and applying the lead were then dealt with, and it was explained how to use the knife to reduce the high lights, an example being shown in which a figure dressed in white had been completely removed from a picture, a background being worked in in place of same.

Mr. Charles Davis, Junr., also spoke, and gave much useful information to members on this interesting subject.

At the usual meeting on 8th May prints for the monthly competition were received, the subject being “Harbour Scenes,” the prints being handed round and criticized by different members.

A system of print exchange was started, the rules being as follow: A member desirous of exchanging prints, places three prints in the club collection, and selects one in exchange, thus the club has an increasing collection of prints showing the work of different members.

The evening was spent in discussing post card printing; methods of masking, etc., were demonstrated by different workers, who also explained the various, methods employed in cutting the different shaped masks used. A home-made printing frame for printing post cards from half-plate or larger negatives was also shown and explained by one of the members.

On 22nd May, the club again met, when the results of the harbour competition were announced, Mr. W. Macdonald Fordham occupying the winning position, with Dr. G.F. Hodgkinson second, and Mr. E. Gifford third. It was decided to hold a “street scene” competition during the ensuing month.

A “club album” was started, all prints for inclusion to be passed by the club as being of sufficient merit to be placed therein.

On 3rd July, Mr. Gifford gave a talk on “Outdoor Portraiture”, relating to his own experience in that particular branch of photography. He always worked in the shade, and rather near a wall or building, as a good side light was then obtained. Special Rapid plates were used, and the exposures with a stop of F.8, ranged from 1 to 4 seconds. Rytol was the developer most favored by the speaker, who found it satisfactory for portraiture.

On 17th July, Dr. Hodgkinson and Mr. Gifford gave a practical demonstration of “Flash light Work”. Dr. Hodgkinson used a “Todd-Forrett” magnesium lamp, which gave a very good light, lasting about half a second; Mr. Gifford used an “Agfa” flash lamp, with the “Agfa” flash powder, the flash being very brilliant and practically instantaneous. Several groups were taken and the plates developed, so that members were able to see the actual results, which were exceptionally fine.

HOBART Y.M.C.A. CAMERA CLUB
The first annual meeting of the Hobart Y.M.C.A. Camera Club was held on Thursday 29th January, Mr. E. Gifford occupying the chair, and judging by the attendance of members a very successful season should ensue.

The balance-sheet disclosed the fact that the Club's finances are in a sound condition, and with the strong management committee and enthusiastic members the club should go ahead by leaps and bounds.

Mr. W. Macdonald Fordham was elected to the position of Hon.Secretary, replacing Mr. E. Gates (resigned), and the newly appointed secretary intends to leave no stone unturned to make the Club a live factor in the local photographic world.

During the evening a number of items were promised for the year’s syllabus, and some extremely helpful topics will be under discussion during the session. It is also proposed to have a series of Saturday after noon outings, and these should materially help to bind the Club together in one harmonious whole.

Members of mainland photographic societies and camera clubs are always sure of a warm welcome at any meetings, and the club dark-room is always available for them.

The usual fortnightly meeting was held on the 12th February, when a very pleasant and instructive time was spent in propounding a number of photographic helps and wrinkles. A pleasing feature of the meeting was the increased attendance of members, and the Club certainly seems to have taken on a new and more vigorous existence.

The next meeting was held on the 26th February, and Dr. Hodgkinson was very much at home with his subject, “The Carbon Process”, and gave those present an interesting demonstration of the methods of printing and developing.

The result of the competition was announced as follows:
