The fortnightly meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society was held this week in the Mining and Hardware rooms, There was a good attendance and one new member was admitted. He was a new settler from Hamburg, Germany. The President (Mr Allan Griffths) led the meeting and some important decisions were made for the advancement and financial progress of the society. An outing was arranged for 4th October at College's Crossing, cars to leave Nicholas Street at 8am. There will be a competition for photographs at an early date. A competition of landscape prints, the first in the history of this newly formed club, brought a total of 17 prints for judging. Prints by Mr W.S. Cardy and Mr R. McDermott tied for first place. Mr A.L. Griffiths taking second and third places. The work was of a high standard considering it was a new society with many members comparatively new to photography. Points aggregates for members on all prints entered for competition, will be totaled on each monthly competition and the prize for the best work of the year will be awarded to the member who has the highest total. The society is out for the advancement of photographic art in Ipswich and would welcome anyone interested in the work, either male or female, to meetings. The next meeting will be held early in October, when a lecture will be given.

Thursday 8th October 1953  Page 2 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

At a meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society an instructive lecture was given by Corporal H. Whyte, of Amberley. He spoke on the basic principles of using a camera to the best advantage. Corporal Whyte dealt with principality and subordination going on to the subject and its satellites. He also touched on repetition and variation of theme. The second half of the talk took in continuity, radiation, contrast, balance and curvation, winding up with that most important item - the point of view. Mr Ern Wright thanked Corporal Whyte on behalf of the society and It was hoped he would pay a return visit in the near future with a talk on his own work. The two prints which tied for first place in the landscape competition last month were Judged by Corporal Whyte. He gave first place to Bill Cardy's print and second place to Ron McDermott's. Third place went to Allen Griffith, who was also highly commended. A photographic portfolio is now under way, consisting of 12 members of the society. Through this medium, each in turn will enclose a print and give critical or complimentary remarks on each of the other prints. On the completion of the circuit each member will have put in one print and have 11 opinions of its quality. By this means it is hoped to learn from mistakes and help fellow members. It is likely to prove very popular and it is hoped to start another very soon. An outing was enjoyed last Sunday morning by members to Colledge's Crossing to take pictures. A competition on the work and results of this outing will be conducted in six weeks time. Next Monday night the monthly competition subject will be "still life". Get your prints ready for a real good show. By these methods the society will advance more quickly. Its invitation to new members is still open to males or females, who then can enjoy this pastime in good company.

Thursday 22nd October 1953  Page 6 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

A meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society was presided over by Mr Bill Cardy in the absence of the President (Mr Allen Griffiths), who with the Secretary attended a meeting of the Brisbane Camera Group on behalf of the society. Committee member, Mr Ern Wright was to have been with them but was confined to his bed. All members hope he will soon be fully recovered. Mr Morrie Gee was welcomed as a new member. The society expressed delight that Dr. Hamilton Stuart Patterson had accepted its invitation to become its Patron. Sincere thanks was tendered to a member, Mr Sid Hucker, for work for and gifts to the society.

STILL LIFE
The highlight of the meeting was a competition on "Still Life". This is a very difficult subject for the amateur, but the work produced was of a high standard for such a young club. Ern. Wright took first honors with a beautiful print. Bill Cardy was second and Les Bowling third. The prints were analyzed for some 45 minutes by members with criticism and compliments given and taken in true club spirit. After the competition a number of color transparencies were screened. They proved of great interest to members as they are the entries of some of society members in an exhibition to be staged by the Brisbane Camera Group. The feeling was expressed that at least one entry may bring distinction to the society as well as satisfaction to the owner. The society will visit the Brisbane Camera Group on November 2 and would like all members to make an effort to be there. The group will hold a competition on Flower Study, which should prove both interesting and entertaining. Members cars will be available so please meet in front of Cribb and Foote's in Bell Street not later than 6.45pm. Booval and East Ipswich members will be picked up at the Fiveways. Please inform the President or Secretary if you can come so that transport can be arranged. At Mr Bill Cardy's residence, Eastern Heights, tomorrow week, the draw will be made and color transparencies screened. If you can give a 10 minutes show bring your's along. Please meet cars at W. Cook and Co. in East Street at 7.20. It was the general expression on Monday night that meetings are getting better and more interesting. The society would like anyone therefore who is interested in photography to come along and share these good times.

CAMERA CLUB VISIT TO BRISBANE
The Ipswich Photography Society suspended its usual meeting last Monday night and visited the headquarters of the Brisbane Camera Group. While the group got down to matters of club business, the Ipswich members gathered around Messr. Ralph Gregory and Grant Thompson who were judging the monthly competition on flower study. The judges explained their decisions to the Ipswich members and invited questions or comment. After listening to an analysis by the two judges and enjoying refreshments, the Ipswich members left for home feeling the visit had been really worthwhile. Last Friday night a show of Kodachrome transparencies was put on at the home of Bill Cardy by society members Allen Griffiths, Les Bowling, Des Sullivan and Graham Heslop.

LOCAL SUCCESS
At least one society member, Ern Wright, is branching out into wider fields of competition with some success. He entered a portrait in the October competition of "Photography", the national magazine for amateur photographers and gained the highly commended prize. All members congratulate him and hope he goes on to even bigger success. The next meeting will be on Monday. November 16, at 7.30, when a competition on the results of the outing to College's Crossing will be the main event. More interest has been built into this event by the offer of the Brisbane Camera Group to send two from their panel of judges to judge the work entered. The committee would like any member who did not attend the outing and who may have prints of any other nature, to bring them along for inclusion in an open section and hear what the judges have to say about them. In this way there is so much to be learnt, so get busy on those prints and lets have a bumper entry. The committee invites visitors, prospective members and friends to come along that night to the Mining and Hardware Chambers, Brisbane Street.

Wednesday 18th November 1953  Page 3 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

The Ipswich Photography Society had an attendance of 27 members and a record entry of 18 prints in the monthly competition on the outing to College's Crossing. Along with this set subject an open competition was staged for all members, which had an entry of 19 prints. This open event will be held along with the set subject every month. Visitors to the meeting on Monday night in the Mining and Hardware Chambers were Dr. A.J. Buchanan (president). Messrs. G.B. Fowler, Tom Loruse and Duncan McDemant (all of the Brisbane Camera Group), who acted as judges for the joint competition. Local visitors were Mr Dick Braithwaite, who donated £1/1/- to the winning entry on the set subject and Mr H. Walker. The judges had a very difficult task with such a large entry. The winner of the set subject was Les Bowling, second and third went to Ern Wright. First and second placings in the open section again went to Ern. Third place in the open was taken by Bill Cardy. Dr. Buchanan had an informal chat with the members concerning activities behind the scenes photographically. Most interesting was the formation of a Queensland federation of photography, which it is hoped will be preceded by the word "Royal", when that permission can be obtained. With the progress of the Ipswich society it is felt that it will be able to take an active part in these affairs. A new member welcomed to the club was Mr M. Schuster. A vote of thanks was accorded the Judges and the rest of the visitors by President Allen Griffiths, supported by Mr Bill Cardy. It is hoped that the next fortnightly meeting will take the form of a showing of the year's best transparencies, loaned to the society by Kodak Ltd.

Wednesday 2nd December 1953  Page 5 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

Owing to having a showing of the 56 best Kodachrome transparencies which were entered in this year's Australian Photo Review, the meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society was held in the Croquet Hall, Queen's Park. Messrs. Snape and Geddes screened the slides which were of a very high standard and were thoroughly enjoyed by all members and visitors. Another outstanding feature of the evening was the first visit of the Patron (Dr. Stewart Patterson). He was welcomed by the President (Mr Allen Griffiths). A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Snape and Mr Geddes. The next meeting will take the form of the usual monthly competitions. The set subject will be flower study and the open competition, it is hoped. will draw a good entry. The membership is growing but there is still room for more, so any interested at all in photography will be welcome. This includes ladies.

Thursday 17th December 1953  Page 9 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

This month's Ipswich Photography Society competition had a flower study as the set subject. A fair entry was submitted by the members and the winners were Ern Wright first and third and Lea Bowling second. Only six prints were entered for the open competition with Les Bowling again taking the honors. This competition is deserving of more support. New judges were appointed to the society for this competition. Mr Dick Braithwaite and Mr Cor Zeilstra. Dick is well known in the city and although he and Cor worked as a team. Dick was the man for the technical and processing. Cor is a Dutch migrant who has been in Queensland about three years and is an art painter of no mean ability. He looked after the composition side of the entries. New members welcomed were Mr A. Timperly and his son John. On view were two new trophies. One, a shield, has been donated by Kodak and will be known as the Kodak Trophy to be awarded to the member with the highest aggregate of points in the set subject at the end of each year. The other is a silver cup donated by C.T. Lorenz of Brisbane. This will be known as the Lorenz Trophy going to the print of the year at the annual exhibition. Des Sullivan, whose work is taking him further North in the New Year, was farewelled. Members regret the loss as Des's work showed such good promise and he was a real club man. A vote of thanks to the judges was moved by the President (Mr Allen Griffiths) and the society closed for the Christmas recess. The next meeting will be on 11th January, the competition being for an open subject. The compliments of the season to all members and may the New Year see the best work yet!

Thursday 14th January 1954  Page 6 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

A competition on open subject was the basic interest of the Ipswich Photography Society's first meeting for the New Year, in the Mining and Hardware Chambers. Owing to a number of the members still being on holidays, the competition did not receive the support it deserved. Fifteen prints were the total entry, but the work was of a higher standard than has so far been submitted. The winning print, "Reclaimed Glory" was a shot of Pompeii by Bill Cardy, who also took third placing. Ern Wright held second place with a shot of the ANZAC Memorial. Dick Braithwaite and Cor Zeilstra were again in charge of the judging and they took great care in their selections. The club welcomed a visitor from Dalby and a new member, Mr Cliff Vinning. At the next meeting, a lecture on Press photography will be given by Bill Sneyd, of the "Brisbane Telegraph".

Friday 22nd January 1954  Page 3 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

The Ipswich Photography Society has expanded to such an extent that it has been necessary to find new headquarters. The club has moved to the C.W.A. Hall, where all future meetings will be held. At a meeting in the hall this week a showing of transparencies from a competition held by the Brisbane Camera Group was staged. Included in the 18 chosen were slides by two Ipswich members, Messrs. Allen Griffiths and Graham Heslop. Congratulations were offered to them. Highlight of the evening, which was among the best meetings held to date, was an informal talk by Press photographer Bill Sneyd. Bill began by telling of his early efforts in photography and how he graduated to newspaper work. He related some of his experiences with a Press camera, which proved most interesting. Two Graflex cameras were among the equipment Bill brought along and most members were very interested in them. To conclude he screened a film he had made depicting the various processes a photograph went through from the time the camera clicked until the paper was received into the home. A vote of thanks to Mr Sneyd was proposed by Bill Cardy and supported by Ern Wright. The next meeting will take the form of a competition on child study, along with the usual open subject. The society has again extended an invitation to prospective members, particularly any ladies interested in photography, to attend meetings. In future meetings will be held on Tuesday nights instead of Monday nights as previously.

Friday 5th February 1954  Page 2 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

Marked progress has been made in the Ipswich Photography Society. The monthly competition was again the highlight of this week's meeting. The set subject was child study for which there was an entry of 20 prints. The open section had a total of 16. Messrs. Bill Sneyd and Cor. Zeilstra were the judges. Bill having been offered honorary membership, which he was pleased to accept. The standard of the prints submitted was high, both in composition and processing. The judges stated they were particularly pleased with the neat, workmanlike presentation of the prints. The open section resulted in a tie for first place between Cliff Venning and Ern Wright. Ern again had two prints tying for second place, with Ron McDermott in third place, Bill Cardy took fourth placing. In the open section Cliff Venning again tied for first place with Bill Cardy. The latter also took second and third place. Brian Venning was welcomed as a new member. Brian was first to congratulate his father on taking two firsts with the first prints he has ever entered in any competition. The society will have an outing to Brisbane on Sunday week, meeting at Petrie Bight at 6pm for night photography without flashlights. This will take the form of a competition at a later date. The next meeting will take place next week at 7.30pm in the new headquarters - the C.W.A. Hall. A lecture on personal experiences and accomplishments in amateur photography will be given by a member of the R.A.A.F.

Saturday 20th February 1954  Page 4 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

At the last meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society members entered freely into general discussion and a lot of useful information was the result. Last week a few members attended the inaugural meeting of the Photographic Society of Queensland thereby becoming foundation members. It is hoped that in the near future a building will be available as headquarters for the use of all members for lectures, as a workroom, library and for exhibitions and as a rest room. The next meeting of the Ipswich society will be the usual monthly competition night. The set subject is "Night photography without flash". An open event will be run in conjunction. The judges again are Messrs. W. Sneyd and C. Zeilstra. At the last meeting Mr George Londy was welcomed as a new member and the society is still hopeful of many more new members in the near future.

Saturday 6th March 1954  Page 9 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

The monthly competition of the Ipswich Photography Society had as set subject "Night without flash". Although a difficult subject there was quite a large entry. Cliff Venning again took first place and he is certainly producing the kind of work which will go on winning competitions. Ern Wright was second and third and Keith Sharpe was highly commended. In the open Brian Venning, son of Cliff, took second placing with a very good effort. Brian is a new member and has really got down to good work right from the outset. This effort should be an example to other members not yet producing prints. Congratulations Brian. He also took fourth placing. Ern Wright was first and Bill Cardy third. Owing to the absence of the President (Allen Griffiths) Bill Cardy presided at the meeting. It has been decided to form an A and B grade for competition in the club's second year. This will apply to both set subjects and open and will give the competitors in B grade an extra interest as well as a chance to take a placing. Three wins will take a member from B grade to A grade. Four new members were enrolled - Les O'Keefe, Mr Devonshire, Norman Symcock and Dave Allen. Les, brought along his nephew, Brian O'Keefe, of Rockhampton, as a visitor. Members were glad to meet him, particularly as he is a friend of Des Sullivan who was a foundation member of the Ipswich Photography Society before he went to Rockhampton. Portraiture is the set subject for the next competition.

Friday 19th March 1954  Page 4 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

Owing to the President (Mr Allen Griffiths) still being on holidays, the chair was again taken by Mr Bill Cardy at the meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society this week. It was announced that half yearly subscriptions were due and members are reminded that they must be financial to compete. The committee wants all members to make at least one print to enter in the portrait competition for the next meeting in three weeks time. These prints, by the way, will not be judged that night although an informal analysis of them will be staged. After the meeting they will be despatched to Mr Garth Grant Thomson for judging. He will return them to the club at the following meeting, giving full remarks and placings on each print along with a practical demonstration on how to go about taking a portrait. This should prove a very interesting evening as members, too will have an opportunity to set up and try themselves out. At least two models will be available, so bring along your cameras and equipment. The usual open competition will be staged as well at the next meeting. The syllabus for 1954-55 was read out to members and it is a very interesting one. It will be printed soon and handed out so that all concerned may take the opportunity of taking the shots as they present themselves. After the business of the society had been dealt with a show of color transparencies was put on. The first half was taken up with the work of Mr George Fowler, of the Brisbane Camera Group, to whom a vote of thanks was tendered by Mr Cliff Venning. This work was taken in Tasmania and was very fine. It was followed by an excellent showing by a club member, Mr Roy Bartram, taken around the Murray River and Adelaide. Dick Braithwaite was present and was responsible for the loan of the slide lantern.

LOCAL CLUB HAD PORTRAIT COMPETITION
An interesting evening was spent at the Ipswich Photography Society's headquarters on Tuesday, when the highlight was the first portraiture competition. Members did not come along with the flow of entries expected, but the 17 received were of a fairly high standard. A discussion took place on the prints which were to be despatched next day to Brisbane for judging by Mr Garth Grant Thompson, of the Brisbane Camera Club. Prints will be returned to the society next Tuesday by Mr Thompson who, in the meantime, will have judged and placed them. He will give his analysis on the entries which should prove very interesting and particularly helpful to all members. In the second half of the evening he will give a demonstration on how to set about taking a portrait with the help of two models. Members bringing along their cameras, will then have an opportunity to try themselves under the guidance of Mr Thompson. It is strongly recommended that all members take advantage of this visit and thereby add to their knowledge from a man well versed in his subject. Along with the portrait entry, the usual open competition was run. First place was taken by Bill Cardy, who also had two prints taking equal merit as highly commended. Recent new member, George Londy, took second place with a very nice print. Equal third place saw good prints by Ron McDermott and Norman Simcock, who is also a new member and completely new to photography. Once again this should prove to all members that they have an equal chance of a placed print if they will only enter them. Mr Bill Sneyd was again the resident judge and the society is grateful for his help. The President (Mr Allen Griffiths) was welcomed back after his holiday and absence for two meetings. Members are reminded that entries for the Ipswich Show will close on Saturday and a big entry from members is expected.

THE PORTRAIT COMPETITION
At a meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society, in a portrait competition, Mr E.E. Wright took first, second and third places and was congratulated by all present on such an outstanding success. After an analysis by Mr Garth Grant Thomson on all entries, he gave a lecture on portraiture. Speaking for almost two hours and covering a very wide field, he said a lot which should prove beneficial to most members. Mrs Thomson acted as model while her husband displayed the different systems of lighting and their effects. The society was deeply indebted to both for the helpful instruction. It was felt by the society that, while strict attention must be given to all advice from Mr Thomson, his analysis of the portraits entered for the competition should not discourage any members in taking up this extremely interesting line of photography. Mr Thomson has attained a high standard in this work and it was felt that probably a little too much was expected of a club so young with so many of its members as yet inexperienced in even the general practice of amateur photography. Whilst certain standards are expected in any branch of photography as a basis on which to build, members must never stick so strictly to them that they lose that individuality which is so necessary to the success of anyone practising the art. The society thanks Messrs. Graham Heslop, Ern Wright and Allen Griffiths for all the work done on the photographic lighting and stands which will prove of tremendous value to the club. The next meeting will take the form of the usual open competition and the set subject is "architecture". It is hoped all members will be present, along with friends and prospective members.

Tuesday 11th May 1954  Page 4 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

At the meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society the open and set subject competitions were judged as usual by Mr Bill Sneyd. Architecture was the set subject and brought quite an appreciable entry of a varied nature, the final results being very close. Tyeing for first place were Ron McDermott jun., who was welcomed as a new member to the club and Ern Wright, with a total of 40 marks out of a possible 50. Three prints shared the honor of second place with 39 marks, two from Bill Cardy and one from Ern Wright. Bill Cardy took third place and Ron McDermott and Les Bowling came fourth with 37 marks. In the open competition Ron. McDermott took the honors. Arthur Timperley took second place with the first print (a portrait) he has entered. This was a very good effort. Young son, John, who is a junior member of the society, also had a print entered. It was not placed but nevertheless a fine effort, particularly as it was John's work from start to finish. In the open competition Ron McDermott jun., was third and Ron McDermott sen., fourth. The following members have attained the honor of becoming A grade workers in the next club year beginning in July when the system of A and B grade will operate for all competitions: Ernie Wright, Bill Cardy, Bob Pratt and Les Bowling. There is yet one set competition and the annual event for more members to reach the total percentage which will make them eligible for A grade work. After the competition a lively discussion took place on the prints entered. It is hoped tonight's meeting will take the form of discussion and minor lectures and a good attendance is expected.

Entitled "The Craftsman" this study won for Mr Ern Wright the
championship award at the Ipswich Show in the photography section.

Tuesday 8th June 1954  Page 4 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

The Ipswich Photography Society last Tuesday held the last of its competitions on set subjects for the current year. These have been held every month for the past 11 months and have proved helpful and instructive to all members. The next competition will be a combination of almost all the set subjects tackled. The total for this event as set subjects will be eight and three entries will be permitted in each subject. The judges will be Messrs. Ralph Gregory and Garth Grant Thompson. The "print of the year" will be selected from all entries for which a silver cup trophy, donated by Lorenz of Brisbane, will be awarded. This show will be open to the public and it is hoped many people will take the opportunity of seeing the work. Tuesday's set subject - bird, animal, or insect - brought a good entry. There were many pleasing prints and two in particular which took first and second prizes, were the work of Cliff. Venning. He again shared third placing with four other members, Messrs. G. Londy, Ron Ewin, A. Timperley and C. Wright. It was a notable performance for Cliff and will make him a worthy exhibitor in the A grade for next year. As this was the last of the set subjects for this year, the aggregates were totaled. The winner, C.C. Wright, will now take the Kodak Shield at the end of the club year and it is the unanimous feeling in the society that he fully deserved it. In second place is Les Bowling, who is to be congratulated on his total of marks and Bill Cardy takes third placing. In Tuesday's open competition Ron. Ewin gained first place, Cliff Venning second, Geo. Londy third, with R. McDermott and Norm Simcock tying for fourth. Next meeting will take the form of "gadget night" and discussion.

CHELSEA SHOW
At a special meeting of the Ipswich Red Cross Society, presided over by Mrs K.J. Hill yesterday afternoon, it was reported that Lady Lavarack had consented to open the Chelsea Flower Show in the Town Hall at the beginning of September. Among those present at the meeting was the Secretary (Mrs K.J. Patrick). Local bodies have offered to co-operate in the staging of the Chelsea Show and it is hoped that an outstanding success will result. On the Friday night the winners of the "Queensland Times" garden competition will be announced; the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce and Industry will arrange for special window competitions during the week of the Flower Show and a floral photograph competition will be conducted by the Ipswich Photography Society in conjunction with the Show. Each of the six Junior Red Cross Circles in Ipswich will contribute a miniature garden and this year, as well as the usual bowls, there will be a display of miniature bowls. A parade of floral hats will take place on both nights. An innovation which should prove popular also will be a novelty cake shop.

FIRST ANNUAL SHOW A BIG SUCCESS
The first annual competition of the Ipswich Photography Society was held in the C.W.A. Hall last Saturday and proved a big success in every way. Prints displayed totaled 104, giving the Judges a very busy time during the afternoon. The evening proved a delightful one for the members and friends present, distinguished guests including the Mayor and Mayoress (Ald. and Mrs J.T. Finimore), Dr. Buchanan, Secretary of the Photographic Society of Queensland and President of the Brisbane Camera Group; Dr. S. Patterson, Patron of the Ipswich Photography Society, Mr H.A. Snape, of Kodak (Australasia) Pty. Ltd., Mr L. Scruse, of C.T. Lorenz Ltd., other members of the Brisbane Camera Group and the judges, Mr Ralph Gregory, President of the Queensland Photographic Society and Mr Garth Grant Thomson. The President of the Ipswich Photography Society (Mr Allen Griffiths) spoke on the aims and accomplishments of the society and introduced the Mayor, who was appreciative of the work presented and expressed a desire to help in any way.

All the winning prints will be on display in Cribb & Foote Ltd.'s window in the very near future.

Saturday 24th July 1954  Page 6 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

At the annual general meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society the President (Mr Allen Griffiths) expressed complete satisfaction with the progress of the society during his term of office and urged members to keep up the good work. Mr Ern Wright, who was appointed president for the new term, said he had big plans for which he hoped to have the co-operation of all members. Mr Wright said he hoped to put the society on a still sounder foundation. A vote of thanks was tendered to Mr Griffiths as he vacated the chair after a very busy year.

Election of other officers resulted: Secretary, Mr Cliff Venning; vice-president, Mr Bob Pratt; treasurer, Mr Geoff Reimer; working committee, Messrs. Larry Johnson, Allen Griffiths, Sid Hucker.

The financial statement revealed that the society was in a very sound financial position. The President pointed out that, with all subscriptions due, the club was off to a flying start in its second year. The retiring president then made a donation of £5/5/-. It was announced that a competition in two weeks time would take the form of "Table Top". Thanks were expressed to the "Queensland Times" for all the fine work done in such a helpful way to the benefit of the society.

Tuesday 10th August 1954  Page 5 - Queensland Times (Ipswich, QLD)

The Ipswich Photography Society began its second year with a competition on "table top". After the excellent entry for the annual competition the entries seemed scarce but good quality was retained. In the absence of the resident judge. Messrs. Ern Wright and Bill Cardy were asked to do the job of judging. At the close of the meeting they were thanked and congratulated. This year marks the first step towards keener competition by having two groups of competitors, A and B. George Londy took first, second and fourth places in the A grade and Cliff Venning third; while Allen Griffiths had first and second honors in the B grade, with Keith Sharpe in third place. Next week's meeting will be in the form of a lecture when a good roll-up is requested to get down to serious work immediately. Another new member and a prospective member were welcomed by President Ern Wright, but there is still room for more.

A good attendance at the showing of color transparencies, which formed the basis of this week's meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society, were high in their praise. The exhibitors were Past President Allen Griffiths, Peter Londy, Dave Allen, and the society's first lady member, Miss Jeanette Summerville. Great credit was due to Jeanette as her showing was a first effort. Another new member, Dave Allen, who also put transparencies on view, was welcomed by Vice-president Bob Pratt. The Society was pleased to welcome past member Des Sullivan, who is on a visit to Ipswich. At the next meeting the set subject will be "Marine" for both A and B groups. The committee is hopeful of a bumper entry.

IPSWICH PHOTOGRAPHY SOCIETY
The society’s First Annual Competition was conducted on July 7, and from its onset was an outstanding success. All members enthusiastically entered into the spirit of the competition and the display of 104 prints in 8 sections was a credit to a new club composed of inexperienced members. Over 60 attended, including the Mayor and Mayoress, Alderman and Mrs. J.T. Finimore; Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Snape of Kodak Ltd., Brisbane; Mr. and Mrs. Scruse of C.T. Lorenz, Brisbane and a party of Brisbane Camera Group members, headed by their President, Dr. A.L. Buchanan. In opening proceedings, our President, Mr. A.L. Griffiths, welcomed our distinguished guests and echoed the society’s appreciation of their interest in our first Annual. The judging was capably carried out by Mr. R, Gregory ARPS, and Mr. G. Grant-Thomson ARPS, both of Brisbane Camera Group, who completed their arduous task in the afternoon. The presentation of trophies, donated by business houses in Ipswich and Brisbane, was performed by the Mayor.

The two coveted trophies, the C.T. Lorenz Print of the Year Cup and the Kodak Shield for A Grade Aggregate were won by R.H. McDermott and E.E. Wright respectively and it was noted that these two awards went to the two inaugural co-founders of the club. Mr. McDermott’s winning entry was a delightful landscape study, which was highly commended by the judges and Mr. T. Scruse who presented the trophy.

The section competition resulted:
LANDSCAPE: 1, R.H. McDermott; 2, E.E. Wright; 3, G. Londy; 4, A.L. Griffiths.

Miscellaneous: 1, R.I. McDermott; 2, E.E. Wright; 3, R.I. McDermott.

The criticism of the award-winners was greatly appreciated by the members and the society will benefit immensely as a result of the expert advice from both Mr. Garth Grant-Thomson and Mr. R. Gregory.

Club members Messrs. L. Bowling and R. Ewin were active all night with their flash, recording for the club’s scrapbook the highlights of the evening. A Birthday cake in the form of a twin-lens reflex camera was a novel feature appreciated by all.

At the Annual General Meeting, held on 20th July, the election of officers resulted: President, E.E. Wright; Vice-President, R.K. Pratt; Hon.Secretary: C.T. Venning; Treasurer, G.F. Riemer.

The meeting conducted by the Ipswich Photography Society at the Trades Hall saw an outstanding lecture and demonstration on character study by Mr Duncan McDermant of Brisbane. His lecture was followed by a one-man show of his own character studies which had been exhibited in overseas and Australian salons. Mr McDermant explained lighting to suit all types of anatomical features and a sound method of tone control by lighting. The self-criticism of his salon exhibits was well received by an enthusiastic audience. The speaker showed by his lecture has acute appreciation of pictorial expression and passed on much helpful advice in the final preparation of the prints. At the next meeting at the C.W.A. Hall, Limestone Street, the first color transparency competition will be judged.

STRONG FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHY

THIRTY-FIVE years as a member of the Ipswich Photography Society is a pretty good record by any standard - and that is what Brassall resident Zita Brown has achieved having joined the photo club in 1989.

Photography is in Zita's blood. She has had a camera since she was 12 years old but it wasn't until she won a share in the Golden Casket that she bought her first single lens reflex camera. Since then her photographic journey propelled her into photographing hundreds of newly born babies in the Ipswich area. Zita took over from her son-in-law after he ceased his baby photography practice in 1995. Since then, she has photographed many Ipswich babies and, in some instances she has photographed babies of people she photographed at birth years before.

She developed all her own images, setting up her dark room in the laundry of her home and spending many hours there on a daily basis. Her signature photos were black and white - unless color images were requested.

Belonging to the Ipswich Photography Society provided Zita with many other photographic opportunities.

She reminisced about traveling to places like Lord Howe Island with professional photographers, enhancing her photographic skills that resulted in her winning many awards. The digital era forced Zita to learn new photographic skills as well as the use of the digital darkroom - a computer. Technology does not faze this 84-year-old. Today she uses Adobe Bridge and Photoshop to enhance her images, a far cry from the long hours spent in a dark room with chemicals.

2000 - In recognition for her work and commitment to the club, Zita was made a LIFE MEMBER of the Ipswich Photography Society.
