KINGAROY AND DISTRICT AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
This newly-formed club is now in existence and is making steady progress, as evidenced by the good attendance at a recent meeting held at the studio of Mr. R. Sellick.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr. T. Sama; Hon.Secretary, Mr. A.E. Eyres; Treasurer, Mr. R. Sellick; Committee, Messrs. T.W. Holder, J.H. Eyres, E.W. Echart, and E.A. Eyres.

Our first outdoor event takes place on 10th June on the lines of a treasure hunt, as outlined in the A.P.-R. of July, 1949.

Any hints, suggestions, correspondence or portfolios from other clubs or societies will be gladly welcomed. Visitors and intending members are welcome at all meetings.

The Camera Treasure Hunt held recently proved a great success. It allowed members to get together, although only two were successful in securing a picture of a baby crying. The prints eventually submitted were judged at the meeting held on 20th June, and Mr. P.W. Holden was declared the winner.

Two new members were welcomed at this meeting.

Subjects for the meeting held on 18th July were then allocated — each member was asked to submit two enlargements of his “own choice” and two of pictorial or farm subjects. The idea was to allow the judges to arrange for A and B Grades. Only the President, Mr. F. Sama, and Mr. McKitrick qualified for A Grade.

Many of the enlargements showed good judgment in composition and general handling, but there was evidence of much room for improvement.

The next meeting will be held on 15th August at 8pm in Sellick’s Studio.

The August meeting of the club saw a further increase in membership, three new members being admitted.

Many good prints were exhibited and commented on, particularly those sent by A.A.A., of Proston, one of our new members, and to whom we extend a hearty welcome.

Our subject for September is “Still Life” or “Table-top”, one entry per member and each member to bring his or her camera for night photography. We conclude the night with a lecture by Mr. R. Sellick on “Enlargements”.

Arrangements are well in hand for our first Exhibition to be held on the 1st and 2nd September.

Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month in Sellick’s studio in Haly Street, Kingaroy. Any photographers visiting the district will be made very welcome.

The outstanding success of the recently conducted Photographic Art Exhibition has provided members with a wonderful stimulus and interest, as well as promote generally the ever-increasing artistic and photographic talents in the Kingaroy district.

Prominently featured were photographs, paintings and drawings by outstanding local enthusiasts. These were supported by excellent loan collections of photographs kindly made available by Kodak Ltd.

As a result of the exhibition, it is anticipated by club officials that the young and enthusiastic Kingaroy Photographic Club should now progress from strength to strength, at the same time raising the artistic and cultural standards of the community in general.

A GRADE: A.A. Atkins.
B GRADE: A.E. Eyers.

All correspondence and enquiries should be addressed to the new Hon.Secretary at the following address: Hon. Secretary, Kingaroy and District Photographic Club, c/- 5 Belle Street, Kingaroy, Queensland.

The November meeting, held on Tuesday 6th, was well attended and the print competition “Animal Study” was keenly contested. A GRADE was won by A.A. Atkins with “Major,” and B GRADE by A.E. Eyres with “Pals”.

The main attraction of the evening was Mr. H.F. Sama’s 16mm Kodachrome films made on his recent holiday tour of the North Queensland coastal districts and Atherton Tablelands.

The Annual Picnic was held on the 11th November in the National Park Reserve, Bunya Mountains, and was attended by seventeen members and friends. The smoke haze from bush fires was disturbing and certainly not conducive to good photography. However, the day went well and all enjoyed the outing.

The meeting of 12th February was held at the C.W.A. rooms, and was open to the public for the showing of films kindly loaned by the Adult Education Department.

Competition results were: A GRADE: No entries.
B GRADE: l, P. Holden; 2, A. Eyres; 3, R. Sollaye.

General comment on all prints submitted for judging was the ingenuity of members in obtaining silhouettes, and the fact that no two members used the same technique. A noted improvement in mounting prints for display was also evident.

The March meeting of the club was held in the C.W.A. rooms on the 11th at 7.30pm.

The set subject, “Men at Work,” was then judged. Results were:
A GRADE: 1, A.A. Atkins.
B GRADE: 1, A.E. Ayres; 2, P.W. Holden; 3, R. Sollaye.

The club adopted a suggestion by Mr. Atkins that each member in turn submit a collection of six prints to the club to be forwarded to country members unable to attend club meetings. Mr. Atkins accompanied his suggestion with six prints to start the ball rolling; two members stated they would hold prints in readiness for the following two months, by which time a workable roster should be in operation.

Owing to problems of transport, the picnic to Ready Creek had to be abandoned, much to the regret of all members. On that sad note, the main event of the evening began, the filming of adult education films, which was open to the public, 25 people attending.

The club hopes to increase its membership by regular monthly showings of films open to the public and exhibiting prints at the same meeting. Any suggestions from camera clubs and information on how to boost membership would be gladly received by the Hon.Secretary.

The meeting held on 18th June at Mr. F. Sama’s residence was attended by a record number of members, four newcomers having joined since our appeal for new members was published in the April issue of The A.P.-R.

Results of the June competition 'Architecture' were:
A GRADE: 1, F, Sama; 2, P. Holden; 3, A.A. Atkins.
B GRADE: 1, A. Eyres; 2, H. Jensen; 3, G. Jensen.

The order of the evening, which was to have been 'Photographing the Town at Night' was abandoned owing to the freezing weather. Fortunately Mr. W. Smith had brought along his stereo viewer and enough sets of Kodachrome slides to keep us well occupied for the rest of the evening.

The meeting closed at 11pm after a buffet supper which was provided by Mrs. Sama and enjoyed by all.
