KODAK CAMERA CLUB
Formed but a few months ago, the Kodak Camera Club is growing rapidly. Its purpose is to unite in one body any enthusiastic photographers on the staff of the Kodak organization in the Melbourne area.

At the inaugural meeting the following office-bearers and committee were elected: President, Jan Kroef; Secretary, B. Stewart; Treasurer, F. Waghorn; Committee, F. Atkins, D. Stainsby, J. Garrett, J. Seagrave, C. Easey, B. Spence, R. Duffy.

The first full meeting was held on Wednesday, 13th February, when a panel of three, Messrs. Kroef, Atkins and Stewart, discussed “The Camera — What it is and what it will do”. At this meeting it was resolved to hold two meetings monthly, on the second and fourth Wednesday in each month, the first meeting to present a lecture or demonstration, the second for a print criticism and general discussion evening.

Outings at which friends and relatives will be welcome are to be arranged when desired by members.

Enquiries are welcomed by the Hon.Secretary, Bruce G. Stewart, of Abbotsford staff.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
Following the forming of the Kodak Camera Club, several interesting meetings have been held in the canteen at Abbotsford. On Sunday, 16th March, an outing was held to the Botanical Gardens and, as evidenced by the prints at the next print discussion evening, some very good shots were taken.

At the meeting on Wednesday night, April 9th, a demonstration of Photography by Artificial Light was given by Mr. Frank Bergh. Judging by the many and varied angles used by the club members, they thoroughly enjoyed the night of practice with the aid of such a skilled demonstrator.

Anyone within the Kodak organization in Melbourne wishing to join the club should contact the Hon.Secretary, Bruce Stewart, c/- Electrical Department, Abbotsford.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
The members have been extremely busy with planning, working and collecting material for an exhibition which will be held shortly. Judging by the work of the prints in hand, the club has brought forth a deal of latent talent and has given the committee quite a lift to see such enthusiasm displayed by a body so recently formed.

At the next lecture night to be held in the Foremen’s Dining Room at the Abbotsford Works on 9th July, 1952, at 6pm, the subject will be “A Voyage from Australia to England” (in color slides and monochrome), by Mr. C. Arnold.

Mr. Arnold has recently returned from a six-months tour overseas, and as I have been fortunate enough to have had a preview of some of his slides, it is a night which will be enjoyed by everybody. A cordial invitation is extended to anyone within the Kodak organization to be present at this screening.

The last meeting of the Kodak Camera Club held on the 11th June, was addressed by Mr. Jan Kroef on “Filters, their Theory and Uses”. Mr. F. Atkins then followed on with a demonstration of filters as applied to color separation, and the members were only sorry that time did not permit of further discussion; but we have been promised a further demonstration by Mr. Atkins of “The Flexichrome Process” at a later date.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
The acceptance of a constitution for the club at our meeting on June 25th automatically dissolved the existing committee. The following office-bearers were therefore duly elected: President, Mr. Jan Kroef; Vice President, Mr. B. Stewart; Secretary , Mr. C. Watson-Brown; Treasurer. Miss B. Spence; Committee, Messrs. F. Bergh, A. Gardiner, M. Moors, G. Snibson, D. Stains by, F. Waghorn.

At the meeting held on July 7th, Mr. C. Arnold gave us his experiences and showed colored slides of his recent trip abroad, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. We have been promised another treat by Mr. Arnold on December 10th.

Our “First Annual Exhibition of Photography” of the Kodak Camera Club was opened by Mr. Foote, our Managing Director, in the Dining Room at Abbotsford Works on July 28th. It was indeed a very happy and encouraging occasion. The photographs were on display from 28th July to 4th August. Voting slips were provided and all workers were asked to nominate the exhibit they liked best. The results of the voting were:

1st (Equal), Strangled, and Strezlecki Ranges, by J. Kroef;
2nd Parvati Temple - Poona, C. Watson-Brown;
3rd (Equal), The End of the Day, C. Watson-Brown; Series of Baby and Doll, D. Smith;
4th (Equal), Lest We Forget, C. Arnold; The Scientist, F. Bergh.
5th (Equal), Lover's Walk, C. Wilson; Portrait, F. Bergh.

Several members have expressed the wish for a Crest for the Club, so at our last meeting it was decided that we hold a Crest Competition. All members have been invited to draw a rough sketch on a sheet 10" by 8" and bring it in on 13th August, the night of our next meeting.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
The night of 13th August, was the closing date for the entries for our Club Crest. Nine entries were brought in: three were selected, and the authors had until August 27th to make final adjustments and alterations. After the selection of these entries Mr. F. Atkins gave us a very interesting and practical demonstration of the Flexichrome Process, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

On 27th August members were asked to bring along films they had taken and we would run them through on either of the two projectors we had managed to secure for the evening (16mm and 8mm). Unfortunately this evening was also the final date for the Club Crest Competition, and with the other Club business time prevented us from seeing more than one roll of 16mm color film brought in by Mr. F. Atkins. The crest submitted by Mr. Jan Kroef was a winner all the way, and was unanimously chosen. The sketch has been placed in the hands of the badge makers and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the finished article.

At out next meeting on 10th September, Mr. C. Wilson will give us a talk on Mounting and Finishing of Prints, which should prove a great help to all members.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
The two meetings in September were very interesting, and quite a lot was learned by both old and new members. On the 10th September, Mr. C. Wilson spoke on The Finishing and Mounting of Prints, which was appreciated by all. On the 24th September, Mr. F. Bergh brought in photographs of varied subjects and gave us a very interesting talk on why and how these particular photographs had been taken. He was given a spontaneous round of applause at the finish of his talk.

Our President, Mr. J. Kroef, with Mr. F. Waghorn represented the club at the inaugural meeting of the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies. Mr. Kroef was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Society.

The meeting on 8th October was Film Night, when we were shown four 16mm films from the State Film Centre and four 8mm films made by Mr. Watson-Brown in India. We spent a very enjoyable evening together.

The weather having improved a trifle, we decided to have an outing on 12th October. Members met at The MacRobertson Fountain in the afternoon and then strolled through the Botanical Gardens.

Members looked forward to the afternoon of 16th October, for the club had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Keast Burke, who spent a very interesting hour with us.

A Model Night was held on 22nd October, and we had a record attendance. Lights were set up, and Mr. F. Atkins and Miss N. Davidson very patiently posed and carried out the wishes of the members. Judging by the number of shots taken we are sure to have a pretty good show of prints.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
After a long wait each member is now the proud owner of a badge showing he is a member of the Kodak Camera Club.

We had two meetings during the month of November on the 12th and 26th. The latter was a print discussion night, and the 12th was the evening that Mr. D. Davies gave us a talk on The History of Photography. He showed slides which depicted the phases through which photography had developed.

We have drawn up plans for a monthly Print competition. The entries for the first competition have to be in by January 14th, our first meeting next year, We have decided on Transport as the set subject for this month.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
We closed the year with our last meeting on December 10th, when Mr. C. Arnold took us photographically on a very interesting tour through Europe and the British Isles.

At our meeting on January 14th we judged first our print competition. There was an open subject and a set subject {Transport) for this first competition. We did not have a very good start and there were not as many prints as we expected. The results of the judging were:
SET SUBJECT: l, F. Atkins, 36 points; 2, C. Watson-Brown, 29 points; 3, C. Watson-Brown, 15 points.
OPEN SUBJECT: l, F. Atkins, 29 points; 2, F. Atkins, 15 points; 3, F. Waghorn, 12 points.

The prints were judged by all the members on individual points. Our next subject is Trees and Clouds.

Our second meeting on January 28th was a Model night, Miss N. Davidson and Mrs. Y. Murray very kindly helped the members out by modeling for them. A very pleasant evening was spent by all.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
The Club is slowly but surely growing, and all members feel that we are at last getting somewhere. We have had a few changes in regard to the rules of our print competitions. Instead of having the members judge the prints, we now have three independent judges, namely: Messrs. G. Collins, Abbotsford, E. Merton, Collins Street, and G. Green, Color Print Service, Abbotsford. We have also appointed an Art Committee consisting of Messrs. J. Kroef, F. Atkins and B. Stewart who have graded the members and who will check all prints that may be submitted for inter-club competitions.

The meeting of February 25th was indeed a very happy occasion for all members, particularly Mr. F. Atkins who had submitted two Flexichrome prints in Section II of the 18th Kodak International Salon of Photography, for he had achieved the honor of winning the McGhee award for the print “La Cruche d’Automne” and a certificate for the print “Le Polisson". Mr. E.J. Rouse, Chairman of Directors of Kodak, attended the meeting and presented Mr. F. Atkins with a silver salver, the prize for "La Cruche d’Autumne". Mr. Merton then took over the meeting and gave us a very interesting and helpful talk on composition, which all members enjoyed.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
We now have a darkroom for our practical work and demonstrations. The Management have very kindly agreed to us using the darkroom on the fifth floor at Collins Street whenever we require it. We have also been given permission to use the Kodak Gallery, Collins Street for our regular club meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Our meeting on March 11th was Print Discussion Night, when we reviewed the results of the February competition, Trees and Clouds. The winners in this competition were:
A GRADE: 1, J. Kroef; 2, M. Moors; 3, J. Kroef.
B GRADE: 1, E. Norman; 2 (equal), M. Anderson and N. Davidson.

On March 25th, Mr. N. Beale gave us a very interesting and practical lecture on Emulsion Making which was appreciated by all members. We are looking forward to the meeting on April 22nd when Mr. Teasdale will show us slides of native flowers and birds in Kodachrome.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
April 8th was a Print Discussion Night, and we reviewed the prints that had been entered for the March competition. The winners were:
A GRADE: 1, J. Kroef; 2, F. Atkins; 3, F. Atkins.
B GRADE: 1, R. Bryant; 2, R. Bryant; 3, C. Watson-Brown.

The meeting on April 22nd was a night we were all looking forward to, and believe me, we were not disappointed. All those members who were able to attend, spent a very enjoyable evening seeing the wonderful variety of native birds and flowers that Mr. Teasdale had photographed with still and movie cameras.

Our President Mr. J. Kroef will speak to us on May 27th about Photographic Flash Technique. We have been very fortunate in that we have had a series of very good lectures, and we hope to do still better things in the future.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
The meeting of June 24th was the last for the year 1952-3, and with it, among other things, came the election of the following office-bearers President, Mr. J. Kroef; Vice-President, Mr. B. Stewart; Secretary, Mr. R.D. Ghivers; Treasurer, Miss B. Spence. The members of the Council are: Miss S. Kempton, Messrs. M. Moors, F. Waghorn, R. Bryant, C. Watson-Brown, R. Nudds. The Art Committee are as before: Messrs. J. Kroef, F. Atkins and B. Bryant. Finally, in the matter of officials for the ensuing year, the delegates for the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies are: Messrs. J. Kroef, and R. D. Chivers.

The result of the May print competition Child Study, was announced and the prize winners were; 1, Mr. J. Kroef; 2, Mr. B. Bryant; 3, Mr. J. Kroef.

We feel that the past year has seen steady progress, and a syllabus planned to arouse plenty of interest has been drawn up for the next six months. It seems to be the appropriate place to thank all the good people who helped by lecturing during 1952-3.

This being the annual meeting the remainder of the evening was spent 'at leisure' viewing some excellent Kodachromes presented by Frank Waghorn, depicting some pleasant holiday experiences. This brought down the curtain on a very successful year. With the co-operation of all I feel that the forthcoming year will be a grand one for all concerned.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
For some reason or other we have not mustered enough members for a quorum at the last two meetings; perhaps they got lost on the way. However, these two meetings were very profitably spent. On July 8th, Dr. Fisher, of the emulsion laboratory at Abbotsford, gave us a talk entitled The Use of Filters in Photography. The lecture was illustrated by lantern slides, our President becoming a very hot projectionist in the true sense of the word. Dr. Fisher’s talk was a very interesting and practical one and was enjoyed by all.

The meeting of July 22nd was equally enjoyable; members were invited by the Victorian Institute of Cinematograph Technicians to attend a showing of 16mm sound films. These films were most interesting, particularly the Swedish item Rhythm of the City and the American film Tanglewood. The evening was something of a change, and provided the opportunity of studying the technique of cameramen on both sides of the globe.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
Perhaps it is because Spring is in the air, I am not sure, but since last writing of our club activities I am delighted to say that the attendances at our meetings have increased, and consequently the last few meetings have been a great success. The evening of August 12th was no exception, because our popular President, Jan Kroef, presented to us a very practical demonstration of flash photography, with particular reference to portrait work. Two flash bulbs were employed, one, of course, for back lighting. More than usual interest was shown in this demonstration, as members were invited to bring along their cameras and join in the proceedings.

I regret to say that we will not have the pleasure of having Jan with us at future meetings as he has taken up an appointment on the technical staff of Kodak in Singapore. I am sure that you will all join me in wishing him the very best of luck in his new appointment.

At the meeting of August 26th, Bruce Stewart enlightened us somewhat on the technicalities of electricity in a talk entitled, Electricity and the Photographer. Bruce stressed the great care needed in handling any equipment using electricity. Incidentally Bruce is our new President; with our co-operation he can do a lot to further the aims of our club.

KODAK CAMERA CLUB
It is said that a change is as good as a holiday. Our members discovered the truth of this saying when we had the good fortune to be conducted around the color section of the Argus newspaper. A large crowd of members and friends were able to see the entire process from the sensitizing of the stainless steel plates, the exposing of the plates for about four minutes under arc lamps, and the various washing processes which finally produced a black relief image on the steel. The publication we saw under way was a well known comic, being printed in four colors, the machine having four heads which exposed the sensitized material simultaneously; and, to further our enlightenment, we were able to watch the cameras at work, also the production of a printing plate which we saw in print the following morning.

September 23rd was another successful model night, a grand gathering of members and friends was evident, and cameras of all types were brought into operation. Thanks are due to the four charming models who did so much to make the night a success. Fred Atkins was, as usual, the life of the party, and all were sad to hear that it was Fred’s last night as a member of the Kodak Camera Club. His new place of employment is only just across the road in Collins Street, so there is no reason at all why Fred should not pay us a visit now and then.

The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies First Inter-Club Competition was most successful and we are pleased to say that our club was well represented. Congratulations to Bob Bryant for having his print chosen for the A.P.-R. folio to be submitted by the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies.
