CAMERA CLUB LINK WITH 50 YEARS AGO
The second meeting of Lismore Camera Club was held at the Town Tennis Club-house with a good attendance, which included four new members.

The new members included Mr Robert Jack, who had been a member of a camera club in Lismore 50 years ago. He gave interesting reminiscences of photography of that era and exhibited photos he had taken at that time.

The proposed constitution of the club was submitted to members and a management committee was formed.

Officers elected are: President, Mr D. Bonner; senior vice-president, Mr H. Green; junior vice-president, Mr C. Palmer; Hon.Secretary and Hon.Treasurer, Mr C. Burgess.

LISMORE CAMERA CLUB
The second meeting of the Lismore Camera Club was held on 2nd February at the Canberra Hotel, Lismore. The constitution of the Murwillumbah and Tweed Camera Club was read and adopted for the time being. Mr. Bonner was elected President; Mr. H. Green and Mr. C. Palmer were elected Vice-Presidents, and Mr. C. Burgess was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Fifteen members were present at the meeting.

The monthly meeting was held on 4th February at the Town Tennis Club Rooms, and a lecture by a panel of Lismore photographic experts on various phases of photography was arranged for February 9th to be followed by 'question time'.

For the purpose of arranging outings, a management committee was appointed consisting of seven members, and G. Green was appointed Publicity Officer for the club. The first outing to Boat Harbour will be in charge of Mr. Green.

The club has adopted three groupings for competition prints, namely: (a) Members who process and enlarge their own work, {b) Members who process their own work but do not enlarge prints, {c) Contact prints whether processed by members or otherwise. Provision has been made for promotions to higher grades and, incidentally, for demotion if a case should warrant such action.

Attendance at the meeting numbered fourteen, of whom four were new members. An interesting feature of the evening was a talk by Mr. Jack who was a member of the Lismore Camera Club of fifty years ago. His interesting reminiscences, supported by three pictures of fifty years ago, were well received.

The monthly meeting was held at the club rooms on 6th May. An excellent attendance included three new members. At the close of routine business, entries for the set subject "Tree Study" and the open subject were judged. Mr. H. King was adjudged winner of the Set Subject, and Mr. C. Palmer of the Open.

After the judging, members were addressed by Mr. G. Green who spoke on his photographic experiences. A number of prints on his subject were distributed by the speaker.

At a committee meeting held on 13th April it was decided to commence instructional classes to be held monthly. The location of the monthly outing on Sunday, April 12th, was Rocky Creek Dam, a recently completed project 15 miles from Lismore. Although the weather was not very favorable, some fine shots were obtained and a good time was had by all.

The monthly meeting was held at the Lismore Town Tennis Club room on 1st July with a fair attendance. In the unavoidable absence of the president, our senior vice-president, Mr. H. Green, occupied the chair. The general business brought forth some frank discussion on the state of the club, and it was decided to suspend outings for a period, as most members found it difficult to attend because of personal commitments. It was also decided to abandon the Tennis Club rooms and to accept a very generous offer by Mr. J. Kaske for the club to hold its meetings at his home. Mr. Kaske has a very well equipped darkroom which he has also offered for demonstrations. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to both Mr. and Mrs. Kaske.

A demonstration night on enlarging technique has been arranged for Wednesday 15th July, with Mr. H. King in command. The monthly competition set subject Table Top, judged by Mr. Rapaporte, was won by H. King.

Due to pressure of business, Mr. Rapaporte has been obliged to resign and in regretfully accepting his resignation, the chairman expressed the Club’s appreciation of his services.

The monthly meeting was held at Mr. J. Kaske’s residence on 5th August with a good attendance. In the unavoidable absence of the secretary for six weeks, Mr. H. King performed his duties. Later, by unanimous vote, Mrs. J. Kaske was elected Secretary pro tem.

After the routine business was over, much interesting discussion took place regarding stimulating interest in the club. Mr. H. King reported that the club’s request for space at the annual Lismore Show to exhibit prizewinning prints had been granted, and members agreed that such an exhibition will arouse local interest. It was decided to select these prints at the next meeting.

Judging of this month’s exhibition Night Study followed with honors going to Mr. J. Kaske with his excellent print Study by Match light. Judging was by popular vote, with each member giving his own criticism of all the prints submitted.

It was decided that the next demonstration evening would be Flood and Flashlight. Members will be bringing their cameras, three floodlights and an electronic flash unit.

On the previous demonstration evening Mr. H. King gave a very interesting lecture on the theory and application of local reduction by ferricyanide. His demonstration which followed indicated the effectiveness of the reducer and the care with which it is applied.

The meeting on 19th August at Mr. J. Kask’s residence took the form of a “Flood and Flash” evening. Members all brought cameras and five flood lights and an electronic flash unit were available. A new member, Miss D. Sullivan, undertook the position of model and performed her duties well. The more experienced members demonstrated the finer points of lighting and model placement. Many good shots were obtained by the fifteen members present.

On the following Tuesday evening the Club was addressed by Mr. T. Torma, a visiting professional photographer who is touring Australia. Mr. Torma gave an address which gave members a real insight into the methods he used and showed the traps into which the unwary can fall. Using two lights, the demonstrator showed how shadows of the nose can widen the mouth, narrow the full face, provide soft pleasant effects, or powerful dramatic pictures. Following on this, Mr. Torma showed the effect of skilfully applied oil tinting. On the completion of his address, the lecturer was plied with questions to which he gave interesting and full answers.

An instructional evening was held on 18th November, and took the form of Film Development. Mr. J. Cromarty undertook to demonstrate the dish method and, prior to commencing, explained the action of the various solutions and the importance of correct temperature. Following the demonstration, members returned to the meeting room and our President demonstrated the tank method. He stressed the importance of correct temperature and standard agitation, and showed the usefulness of time-temperature tables. The members appreciated seeing the two methods, and could see points for and against each of them.

It has been decided to make a drive for younger members and, to this end, posters advertising the club have been distributed to chemists. If sufficient of the younger fry can be enrolled as members, it is intended to hold beginners classes early in the year.

The monthly meeting was held at Mr. J. Kaske’s residence on 3rd February. There was a fair attendance, quite a few members being absent due to holidays. It was decided to extend the activities of the Demonstration Night by processing rolls of film brought along by members, together with enlarging and printing. It was also decided to increase the stock of club equipment, and members were allotted the task of gathering various items.

At the annual meeting on January 6th, neither the President nor the Secretary stood for re-election. Mr. Harold King was elected President, Mrs. J. Kaske Hon. Secretary, and Messrs. D. Bonner and C. Burgess Vice-Presidents. Mr. Bonner was re-elected Publicity Officer.

The Club looks forward to another successful year’s activities and welcomes newcomers who wish to join. Those interested can contact our Secretary, Mrs. J. Kaske, whose address is High Street, Lismore.

LISMORE CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting was held at Mr. J. Kaske’s residence on 3rd March. The attendance was less than usual due to the recent severe flood. This also caused a reduction in the number of entries in the Set Subject, Seascape or River Scene, and brought forth some facetious remarks regarding good lake scenes being readily available a week earlier. Members expressed appreciation of the service the A.P.-R. is rendering the club, and in its sending an exhibition of prizewinning prints.

Routine business brought an offer by Mr. D. Bonner to allow the members to use his photofloods until they get their own. This was accepted. It was decided to make a donation of two guineas to the flood relief fund.

The monthly general meeting was held at Mr. J. Kaske’s residence, High Street, on 5th May, with eleven members in attendance. In the absence of the President due to illness, the Vice-President, Mr. D. Bonner, occupied the chair. After the routine business was cleared, discussion centered on a proposal that members shall give short lectures on subjects of their own choosing. It was held that such lectures would give members an understanding of the theory side of photographic processing, and be a valuable adjunct to the practical section. It was also decided to request a well-known local doctor to give a screening of color transparencies taken on his travels.

At the previous Demonstration Night, on 21st April, Mr. L. Sheppard gave an interesting demonstration on Processing Under-exposed Negatives. The results were very good and members knowledge was greatly enhanced. The club has on loan three photoflood lighting units, and these have been put to good use in recent weeks.

LISMORE CAMERA CLUB
The general meeting was held at Mr. J. Kaske’s residence on 2nd June with a good attendance. At the conclusion of the routine business, discussion was centered on a letter from the Byron Bay Camera club in which an invitation was issued to the Lismore club to visit them. It was decided however, to invite them to our next demonstration night on June 16th to witness a screening of color transparencies taken by Dr. J. Gribben on his recent travels in the U.K. and U.S.A., and to arrange a return visit in the near future.

The meeting discussed arrangements for judging the Print of the Year, and after a very lively discussion it was decided that a point score total be taken of the eleven monthly competition results, in which first place secures three points, second two, third one, and in the event of one competitor gaining two placings in one month, the highest placing only to be counted.

Mr. D. Bonner delivered a short talk on the Theory of Development of the Silver Image. The lecturer briefly explained how the sensitivity speck was formed on the bromide crystal, how this speck formed the latent image, and why the developer does not attack an unexposed crystal. The club looks forward to further talks by other members.

The previous demonstration night, on 19th May, took the form of mass experimentation on Printing-in Clouds. From all accounts members had a good time and it is hoped to see in the near future proof of their increased wisdom. The Secretary also brought to notice that a large amount of correspondence is being addressed to the previous Secretary, and desires to intimate through these columns the correct address: Mrs. J. Kaske, High Street, Lismore, N.S.W.

Dads on the Air in 2008, Celebrating Men, Discrimination, Feminism, International Perspectives, Men's Health.

We close today’s show by talking with Kay Knight from the Thanks Dad Photos competition, run by a group called Community Connections. Here is some background on the origin of the competition from their website.

“Simply displaying positive photos of dads with their children was first suggested to Chris Hawke in July 2000 by Michael Hawton a Family Court Counsellor in Lismore and Greg Schlieman one of the co-founders of Northern Rivers Mensline telephone support based in Lismore NSW.

Chris Hawke had just started in July 2000 as a men and family relationships worker funded by the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services in the Lismore area. His aim was to continue to run Father Son Weekends and provide dads with other activities like sporting days to bring men and boys together. This positive photo idea was a great way to get to know the local community.

The 2000 Fathers Day Photo Competition was organized in six weeks with the support of local media and schools with cash prizes provided by Lismore businesses and presented to winners in front of K-Mart in Lismore Shopping Square. The Lismore Camera Club and several local schools were involved, local judges and also people's choice voting. A trophy was also given to be best primary and secondary school photographer by Darcy McFadden, a well-known and recently retired photographer with The Northern Star.

The impact was amazing. In organizing the competition, Chris became involved in hundred of discussions with men and women who were keen to share their positive stories. Many men were delighted to have positive photos of themselves with their kids displayed in public. The public people’s choice vote seeded many thoughts and stimulated many discussions within families or with the exhibition attendants. Some also wanted support to rebuild broken or struggling relationships with their children and partners.

The 2001 Fathers Day Competition and Exhibitions expanded to include people voting for their favorite photo at Ballina Shopping Fair, schools and community venues. The regional newspaper The Northern Star provided cash prizes and promotion for a Regional Schools Workshop at Richmond River High School. Ian Causley our federal parliament representative presented prizes with several speakers including Jacklyn Wagner photographer from The Northern Star.

In 2002 we went national after many requests from around Australia. We visited many schools, community groups.

A second regional schools workshop was run in conjunction with the NSW CAMERA CLUBS CONVENTION with speakers and school students from 15 schools across the region, speakers and prizes.

In 2003 the People’s Choice Exhibitions also toured for three months around the south coast and southern highlands of NSW with the NSW Men’s Health and Wellbeing Association. The competition has continued to go from success to success. Many thousands of Australians continue to be stimulated by this positive preventive activity affirming the positive times that men are already having with our children and young people”.
