LISMORE PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
The members of the newly formed Lismore Photographic Club held their first meeting in the School of Arts Hall last Friday evening, when there was a very large attendance of members. The President, Mr. A.J. Simpson, J.P., occupied the chair, and, in the absence of a special subject for the evening, correspondence and other business was first dealt with, after which there was a general discussion on some of the work produced by members. Mr. W. Cornish, Patron, and the other officers elected wrote accepting office.

In the after discussion. Dr. Kesteven, Messrs. Simpson, Gostellow, W.B. Wilson, B. Jackson, and G. Burley, among the amateurs, took part. Dr. Kesteven, as one of the old wet plate school, recounting the obstacles he had met with in changing from the old process to the new. For the professionals, Messrs. F. Russell and P.K. Hasting imparted some valuable instruction to the amateurs, answering questions and affording every assistance possible.

On the motion of Ald. Russell, Mr. Hasting was unanimously elected honorary adviser to the Lismore Photographic Club .

It was decided that the subject for next meeting should be criticism of the work of the members during the present month. The Lismore Photographic Club meets the first Friday in the month, when members are invited to bring negatives and prints for criticism, and this will be the first business of the meetings. Mr. W.E. Perroux, honorary instructor to the Lismore Photographic Club , has kindly given one night per week for instruction to the members. The members roll is now very lengthy, and rapidly increasing, and it is hoped that the first "field day" will be held shortly.

LISMORE PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
A special meeting of the Lismore Photographic Club was held on Friday evening, 20th January, Mr. C. St. H. Syer, Vice President, presiding. The principal business of the evening was the consideration of a proposal to establish clubrooms for the use of members, alteration of night of meeting, arrangements for a competition and for another field day. It was decided to establish club quarters in rooms secured in the "Victoria" buildings opening on to the balcony, and these will be fitted up for the purpose. The night of meeting was altered from the first Friday to the first Monday in the month.

A proposal was formulated for a quarterly competition for the members. It was reported that the Club had successfully passed through its first half year, and had now entered upon the second half year from January 1st.

Several "field days" had been held, to Boorie, Tirrannia Creek, and Merom Creek Falls, and another would shortly be held to Nimbin Rocks.

The Club had a membership of 35, hut there were still a few amateurs holding aloof for reasons best known to themselves.

Several of the members had received invitations to an exhibition given by the Grafton Camera Club.

A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. P.K. Hasting, honorary adviser, for his valuable assistance during the year. The remainder of the evening was devoted to criticism of prints and negatives submitted by members, some excellent work being shown by Mr. G.A. Gostellow.

LISMORE PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
The Lismore Photographic Club having passed through the early troubles associated with the formation of any club, has now settled down to an even keel, and is in a good position both as regards finances and membership. The present members take a lively interest in the club’s welfare. It is now over a year since the club was formed, and during that period it has done wonders in such a short space of time, chief amongst which was to get the committee of a show recently held to include a photographic section in their schedule. Club rooms have been established in Woodlark street, and at present an endeavor is being made to procure a suitable site centrally situated upon which it is intended to erect a club dark room, and provision will also be made for members to enlarge up to the largest size. We have two architects in our club who are also great enthusiasts, and it is expected that the plans, when prepared, will be everything that is desired from a photographer’s point of view.

At present a competition is being held, which will extend over six months. Judging in connection with same is being done by points, and competitors will not know what have been awarded until the whole competition is over. The object in not making known what points have been awarded each exhibit, is to maintain the enthusiasm in the competition, which would lag if competitors knew what points were awarded each month.

Each month has a class, and competitors must have two prints, “any size or paper”, ready before the end of each month. The prints must be from two distinct negatives which have been made since February last. All the work shown so far has been on bromide paper, and members prefer the Australian make of paper to the imported material. The iron developer is greatly used now, but recently members have been using several different developers; but they find the iron works best.

The list of subjects in connection with the competition are as follows: April, “Flowers or Fruit”; May, “Architectural Study”; June, “Intonors”; July, “Animal Study”; August, “Photographic Study, Composition”; September, “Landscape”.

The officers for the present year are: Patron, Mr. J.W. Coleman, M.L.A.; President, Mr. C. St. K. Syer; Vice-Presidents, Msssrs. G.H. Gostellow and F. Wicks; Hon.Secretary, Geo. N. Burley; Treasurer, Dr. C. Franceschi.

LISMORE PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
A party of members of the Lismore Photographic Club, including Mr. C. St. H. Syer, President, and Ald. C. McKenzie, Vice President, journeyed by coach to Cooper's Creek on Wednesday afternoon last for a field day. They were favored by magnificent weather, it being an ideal day for photographers' work. Upon arrival the party laid the foundation for the afternoon's labor by attacking the baskets of refreshments, the fresh air giving a zest to the viands. Some very pretty creek scenes were secured, and several farms were visited, a large number of excellent pictures, both landscape and cattle, being obtained. After a necessarily long walk afternoon tea was done justice to, and the amateurs returned to town about nightfall.

On Thursday evening Mr. J.S. Stening, Hon.Secretary to the Photographic Society of New South Wales, who is visiting these districts, accompanied by Mr. W.L. Young, of Middows Bros., Sydney, kindly gave an evening to the members of the club at their rooms in the Victoria building. Mr. Stening gave the local amateurs several hours valuable advice and practical instruction in bromide, platino-type, and carbon processes and showed some of his own work. Mr. Young also kindly exhibited about a hundred pictured in albumen. Both gentlemen evinced a great interest in the Lismore society and went to considerable trouble to assist it. Mr. Stening went on to the Clarence yesterday.

DEATH OF POSTAL VETERAN
A former employee of Lismore Post Office for over 49 years, Mr. George Nicholson Burley, 74, died in Sydney on Tuesday. Be had gone to Sydney to seek medical attention, and was a patient in the Memorial Hospital, Byrell Street, Waverley.

Mr. Burley was born at Wyrallah, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Balfour Burley, who were among the earliest settlers at Wyrallah. They had the Caledonia Hotel there in the 80's. John Burley was associated with the early timber days of the Richmond River.

Mr. Burley joined the Lismore Post Office staff as a junior officer and postman, in 1891. Later he was often sent as relieving or acting Postmaster to district offices. After 49 years' service, during which he was the senior mail room official, the highest position available to an officer in the mail branch in country districts of the State, Mr. Burley retired. He could remember the mail coach services through the district, and fondly watched the growth of the town reflected in the volume of mail, which increased from 1000 in one despatch to 10,000 postings daily in 1940. He could recognize the handwriting of nearly every person in Lismore in the early days.

"It has been an interesting experience for me to see the many changes and to observe the district's progress", Mr. Burley once said. "There were eight houses in South Lismore when I first delivered mail there, and five hotels at North Lismore, which was the important suburb. The Post Office was housed in a building since replaced by the Public Works Department offices, and the allotment of land on which the present Post Office stands, was a paddock overgrown with weeds and tall grass".

Mr. Burley said a postman's life ranked among the most interesting in the world. Incidents which called for resource, courage and a sense of humor occurred almost daily. He also held the distinction of having made up the first mail which left Lismore by air to Tenterfield.

After retirement, Mr. Burley returned to Lismore Post Office on duty for several years during World War II to ease the manpower position. He also played his part in the social life and development of Lismore. He had a lifetime association with the Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Lismore Band and Lismore Orchestra, and gave devoted service to any organization in which he became interested. He was a founder of the old Lismore Photographic Club, also of the first swimming club in Lismore, when races were regularly held at Coleman's Point.

A first marriage with Miss Maud Austin lasted only a few months, due to the death of Mrs. Burley. In 1909, Mr. Burley married at Lismore Miss Bessie MacKenzie, who died in 1929. One daughter, Miss Muriel Burley, of Lismore, survives. A son, Mr. R.M. Burley, was electrocuted in an accident in 1939. Two sisters, Mrs. E. Annand (Lismore) and Mrs. P. Pluck (Goulburn) also survive.

Mr. Burley will be buried in Lismore.
