MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
At the invitation of Miss Marsh, "Summerlands", the members of the Mackay Camera Club spent a very pleasant afternoon on Sunday last. This club has been in existence a few months only, and judging by the enthusiasm displayed by the members and the rapid increase of membership is clearly going to be one of the most successful of its kind in Queensland. The object of the club is to assist beginners in the photographic hobby and to allow of the exchange of views of those more proficient. In addition to this, open-air excursions gave an opportunity for exercise and social relaxation. "Summerlands", the bungalow residence of Miss Marsh, was an ideal spot for a camera outing. The residence stands in a forest of trees, the familiar mango and stately palm with numerous exotic members, some the only specimen's of their kind in the district. The late Mr. Marsh spent much money with excellent taste in laying out these grounds. To-day with the social unrest, there is not the same desire to carry on this beautifying, civilizing work, the idea being foreign to an age when money not beauty is the standard bearer and sloth not energy the pacemaker. A delightful afternoon tea was spread in the shade, and full justice done to the nice things provided. A hearty vote of thanks to Miss Marsh was proposed by the president (Mr. J.F. Williams) and carried by acclamation. If the photos taken by them turn out well each member will have a permanent souvenir of a happy and healthily spent Sunday afternoon.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
A PICTURE LECTURE
Reference was made in these columns on Wednesday morning to the lecture delivered the previous evening by Mr. E.M. Cornwall under the auspices of the Mackay Camera Club. The lecturer dealt in a popular way with his subject, and showed many beautiful views of bird life and the beauty spots of this district. But not the least interesting portion of the lecture was the introduction. He said:

First of all I must ask you to deal leniently with me this evening; I am not a lecturer and in fact am a bit surprised at my temerity in venturing to address an audience like this. I can only hope that when you see my pictures you will find it in your hearts to forget all other faults. When I first took up photography it was not altogether with the idea of making pretty pictures; in fact the artistic side of the hobby did not consciously appeal to me at all. I used it simply as a means of making records of objects of natural history, in which I was interested. Rut one cannot be continually handling these beautiful and interesting subjects without becoming conscious of the wider beauties of landscape and seascape in which they are framed. And so I was led away until it did not satisfy to merely make a picture of a bird's nest; the tree in which it was placed and the landscape surrounding it began to appeal to me as worthy subjects. Many of us have a very primitive knowledge of art. We only know when a picture pleases us, and after all that is really all that matters. Our dear old friend, Artemus Ward, in one of his lectures, remarked, "I do not paint myself, though perhaps if I were a single young lady of uncertain age, I might. I used to draw a bit. I once drew a cartload of raw turnips over a wooden bridge. The people noticed me; I drew their attention. Now, if Artemus had possessed a camera he could have taken that cartload of turnips without the trouble of drawing it. Some people resemble a friend of mine of many years ago. He was a great cyclist and fond of making long tours through the western district of Victoria, where the country is level and there are hundreds of miles of road as smooth almost as a billiard table. Thereto he would betake himself when he had a holiday or two, and with head bent low over the handles of his machine would scorch for mile after mile, his one and only object being to break some previous record made by himself or some other cyclist. The natural beauties of the countryside had no charm for him. He saw nothing but the narrow strip of road immediately under his nose, and the quicker that was piled behind him the better he liked it. But what a different tale can be told of him who walks abroad with eyes wide open to the beauties of the wayside, and who can stop and listen with joy to the wild birds sing.

He Studies shadows, colors, clouds, Grass buds and caterpillar shrouds. He can echo the words of John Burroughs who in one of his charming essays remarks, "Whichever way I go I'm always glad I came". A lover of Nature can never feel lonely on his or her way through life. It matters not which way one wanders, through the forest, by the seashore, the river, or in mountain fastnesses, there is always a page of Nature's book open before one, and he who wills may read. Nature has been likened to a dear old nurse who sings to her children.
"Come, wander with me", she said
"Into regions yet untrod,
And read with me awhile
In the manuscript of God"
"And I wandered away and away.
With Nature, the dear old nurse.
Who sang to me by the way
The rhymes of the universe"
"And whenever the way seemed long
And my heart began to fail.
She would sing a more wonderful song,
Or tell a more marvelous tale"

And now I would like to say a few words about photography as a hobby. A man is a poor creature if he has not got a hobby of some kind. As a boy he is a constant source of worry and anxiety to his mother. She never knows when to put her hand upon him, and the chances are that whenever he is out of her sight he is up to some mischief or other. And as a man he is not much chop. Instead of being a member of a camera club, or some other educational body, he spends his evenings talking politics or horse racing on the street corner or over the bar of the public house. He lays abed until all hours on Sunday and expects his hardworking wife to bring him his breakfast to bed, and complains if the children are not kept quiet, that he can get the sleep he should not need. If the lad has a fancy for photograph, give him a camera by all means. It need not be an expensive one, for good results can be obtained with quite a low priced outfit. Photography leads one out into the open air and God's good sunshine; it helps one to appreciate the many natural charms of the countryside; tree and flower reveal new beauties, and sunshine and shadow have new meanings for one who views them with a photographic eye.

"A blade of silver hair grass nodding slowly
In the soft wind, the thistles purple crown
The ferns; the rushes tall and mosses lowly

Can fill one with sensations exquisite For all are exquisite and every part Points to the Mighty Hand that fashioned it".

Although all photographers are not naturalists, there is barely an exception to the rule that all naturalists are photographers. The camera is an essential part of the outfit of workers in all branches of natural science, and has I think, done more than all else to popularize that study. Photography helps to draw us very close to Nature's heart. In looking for pictures we find much more than we realize at the time.

Kendall sings of the longing - "To steal the beauty of that brook. And put it in a song",

We may not be able to put the beauty of tree or flower, of bird or brook, into a song, but certainly we can, with a camera, secure many gems of woodland beauty which otherwise would be but fading memories. And now I will ask our operator to let us have the pictures and I will try to tell you something about them as they are thrown upon the screen.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The Mackay Camera Club held its usual fortnightly meeting at the School of Arts last Tuesday night. The business of the evening was a very interesting lecture on the "Welcome" photographic exposure record and diary by Mr. G. Poulton. The lecture was illustrated by an enlarged copy of the exposure calculator, in which the detail working was easily seen by the members. In photography it is essential to give a correct exposure for successful results. Mr. Poulton concluded his lecture by a few remarks on the different apertures of the shutter. Mr. Poulton is to be congratulated on the very able way he handled his subject. Evenings of this kind will help the members to make photography a successful hobby.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The Mackay Camera Club has been responsible for many pleasant evenings during the year to members and friends and as was to be expected, when invitations were sent out for a final exhibition prior to going into recess there was a pleasing response. The invitation stated that a lantern lecture would be given by the President (Mr. J.F. Williams) on "Some of the Wonders of the World", and this took place in the Oddfellows Hall on Wednesday night, the audience filling all the available seating accommodation in the building. The lecturer kept his audience interested for two hours with an exhibition of over a hundred views of many remarkable places and objects principally in the East, and as each was described in a lucid manner the evening proved instructive as well as interesting. The lecturer also exhibited several reproductions of microscopic slides which were very beautiful. The photography throughout was very clear and highly creditable to Mr. Williams, particularly as, with a few taken from negatives, all the pictures were reproduced from books and newspapers. In acknowledging a vote of thanks at the close of the lecture - which was carried by acclamation - Mr. Williams stated that the club had endeavored to enlist support in amateur photography by giving illustrated lectures and demonstrations during the year, and had been successful, and he hoped the members would continue this form of social gatherings when the club resumed next year. He also gave a word of praise to the operator of the lantern. Mr. Rowe, who has been invaluable as an assistant to the different lecturers. Mr. Rowe is quite an expert at manipulating the lantern, and those who have had the pleasure of being present at the different lectures cordially endorsed the complimentary references mad by the President.

It is most gratifying to note that all of the prizewinners in the above competition had not previously won a prize, and three out of the five are ladies. Gentlemen, look to your laurels !

Some discussion took place as to the advisability of holding a conversazione and exhibition of members work on some future date, and a sub-committee was appointed to go into the matter and report. Business having occupied considerable time, the subject for the evening, re-touching, by Mrs. Woodley, was postponed until next meeting. This subject is most interesting and of the greatest value to all amateurs who wish to do good work. Members are advised not to miss the address.

As the President and Mrs. Williams are about to visit the Southern States on holiday, the members took the opportunity of wishing them bon voyage. The members who spoke expressed the hope that the change would be beneficial to both and that the President would bring back some new ideas for the benefit of the Club.

In the course of his annual address the retiring President deplored the fact that the club had not during the past year made the progress hoped for; the various competitions had not been supported to the extent desired, for although the work submitted was good, the number of entries did not adequately represent, the resources of the club. He urged the members to take part, in all competitions and so enhance their interest and make them a real educational factor for club members.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patrons, Mr. W.W. Holyoake, Mr. P.E. Armati, W.J. Manning: President, Mr. J.F. Williams; vice-presidents, Mrs Woodley and Mr. E.M. Cornwall: secretary and treasurer, Miss M. Swanson: operator, Mr. Rowe; committee, Miss Black and Miss Wiles and Messrs. Keller and Dupuy; auditor, Mr. Ross.

When thanking the members for electing him for the third year, the President wished to record his appreciation of the loyal help he had always received from members. He regretted that owing to various causes during the last few months he had not been able to give all the attention he desired to club matters. He drew attention to the near approach of the Show, and urged members to have their exhibits ready in good time. A syllabus was arranged for the next three months, and as all are interesting and some of them new, it is hoped members will take full advantage of the demonstrations. The subject for next meeting will be "Tank Development", manipulated by Mr. Hennessey. Before closing the meeting the President drew attention to the generous treatment meted out to the club by the local press, and directed the secretary to convey the club's appreciation to the 'Daily Mercury'.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Tuesday evening last. The President, Mr. J.F. Williams, presided and there was a fair attendance of members. After routine business had been disposed of, Mr. Hennessey gave a most interesting and instructive demonstration of "Tank Development of Films". With the aid of a perfect little Kodak developing outfit he was able to carry his audience through the whole process and at the same time he chatted interestingly on his experiences with developing solutions, temperature, and other matters connected therewith. The resultant negatives demonstrated effectually the possibilities and limitations of this method of tank development, and proved that with ordinary care in the matter of exposure and manipulation the result must be satisfactory. Mr. Hennessey was accorded a very hearty vote of appreciation of his efforts, and at the same time congratulated on being one of the first of the younger members of the club to come forward as a demonstrator. It is to be hoped that others will follow his excellent example.

The subject for next meeting, on May 31, is "Gaslight Printing", by Mrs. Woodley and Miss Wright, and as this subject is of special interest it is to be hoped there will be a good attendance. Members are reminded that entries for the "Street Scene" competition close at next meeting.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held on Tuesday evening. The President, Mr. J.F. Williams, occupied the chair, and the attendance was better than usual. Three new members were balloted for and duly elected. The President gave verbal report of the outing on the 12th. He said the attendance of members was a bit disappointing, but those who did attend had a very enjoyable time. They were the guests of the vice-presidents for the afternoon, visiting first of all the residence of Mr. E.M. Cornwall, where they inspected some of that gentleman's photographic work and his natural history collection. A move was then made to "Woodleigh", where Mrs. Woodley dispensed afternoon tea. The vice-presidents were heartily thanked for their efforts to make the outing enjoyable.

It was decided to hold a reunion of club members and friends, in lieu of a public social and a sub-committee was appointed to hand to the secretary at the next club meeting the names of those friends they wish to invite. The subject for the evening was a short lecture, by the President, on correct exposure of plates. He illustrated his remarks with suitable negatives, and gave many valuable hints on the use of stops, exposure, etc. A cordial vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. At the next meeting the President will handle the subject of trimming, and the various processes of mounting prints, which are often stumbling blocks in the path of the amateur.

The ordinary meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Tuesday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) presided, and there was a good attendance of members. One new member was balloted for and elected. It was decided that a social evening be held on Saturday, August 6th, for club members and friends. Invitation cards are now available and members can procure them from Vice-President Cornwall at the Red Arcade.

The subject for the evening was a lantern lecture by Mr. Neilsen, who showed a number of views taken by himself during his wanderings in various parts of the State, including the Atherton Tableland, Cairns, the Gulf country, and other places. The President expressed the thanks and appreciation of the club for his efforts.

At the next meeting of the club Mr. Dupuy will initiate members into something new for most of them, Artura printing. This process is particularly useful for some class of photography, and members will be glad to avail themselves of the opportunity of seeing it demonstrated.

Members are urged to do their best to make the social on the 6th worthy of the best traditions of the club. Lady members will meet on Tuesday evening next to finalize arrangements.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The members of the Mackay Camera Club on Saturday night held a very pleasant invitation social in the Star Theatre. There was an attendance of about 60 couples, and the evening, occupied mainly with dancing, was enjoyable to all present. Mrs. Keogh was warmly applauded for her contribution of a vocal number. As M.C., Mr. Hennessey carried out his duties efficiently; Miss Wantford provided the dance music. A delightful supper was provided by the ladies of the Club and greatly enjoyed. Proceedings terminated shortly before midnight and another successful function added to the long list of this popular association.

The subject evoked considerable discussion, all present taking part. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Dupuy for his effort.

The subject for next meeting is "Tank Development", by Mr. Hennessy. Members are reminded that the competition for Manuel's Creek closes on Monday next, and are requested to hand in their prints to the Secretary not later than that date.

The subject for the evening was "Tank Development", by Mr. Hennessy. He explained thoroughly the method of this developing and pointed out its many advantages by making developing possible without the use of a dark room. On the motion of Mr. Goodrich, seconded by Mr. Rowe, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Hennessy for his very interesting demonstration.

The successful competitors in the "Street Scene" competition were as follows: Mr. Goodrich, first; Mr. Cornwall, second; Mr. Hennessy, third; Mr. Milson very highly recommended.

After the routine business had been disposed of Mr. Rowe gave a most interesting and instructive demonstration on "Gaslight Printing", showing the method of printing by several different artificial lights, amongst which was the magnesium ribbon, which makes it possible for printing to be carried out with less time and trouble. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Rowe for his efforts.

At the next meeting the President will give an address on "Stereoscopic Work". This should prove a very interesting topic.

Au outing to Dumbleton on the 29th was discussed, and final arrangements will be made next meeting, therefore, a good attendance is requested.

The successful competitors in the Manuel's Creek competition were: Miss Bourne, 1st: Mr. Andrew, 2nd.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Tuesday evening. The proposed Club outing for the 20th was discussed, and in view of the fact that many members would be unable to attend on that date, it was decided to hold the matter over until after next meeting. One new member was proposed and a ballot will be taken at the next meeting.

The subject for the evening was "The Stereoscope and Stereoscopic Photography", by the President, Mr. J.F. Williams, who explained the method of making stereoscopic pictures, and pointed out how easily they can be made with any ordinary camera, stressing the point that the most commonplace subject is beautiful when viewed through the stereoscope. As an example, he drew attention to a photo of a piece of coral, which though flat and uninteresting in an ordinary photograph was indescribably beautiful when viewed through the stereoscope. All members present were supplied with stereoscopes and were thus enabled to examine and enjoy the many beautiful pictures which the President brought along to illustrate the lecture. On the motion of Messrs. Rowe and Cornwall, a very hearty vote of appreciation was accorded Mr. Williams for his able demonstration. In connection with stereo work, we understand that Mr. and Mrs. Woodley are offering a prize for a competition which will be held early next term.

The subject for next meeting to be "A Lantern Evening", by the President and Vice-President and as that will be the last meeting until after the Christmas recess it is hoped there will be a record attendance.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held on Tuesday evening. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. The Secretary (Miss Swanson) tendered her resignation, which was received with regret. The President expressed appreciation of the capable manner in which Miss Swanson had carried out her duties whilst in office. Mr. Andrew was then elected as Secretary, and Mr. Cornwall, Treasurer.

The evening was spent in viewing a very fine lantern display by the President and Mr. Cornwall. The formers collection of slides included some very good views of some of the most notable buildings in New York, also some fine reproductions of beautiful pen and ink drawings, and a lovely series of miscropical forms of marine life. Mr. Cornwall showed a collection of splendid pictures dealing with bird life. On the motion of Mr. Goodrich, seconded by Mr. Dupuy, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrators, and Mr. Rowe, the operator, for the great amount of trouble they took to give the members such a pleasant evening.

The Club now goes into recess until the first Tuesday in February.

Thursday 9th February 1922

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The first meeting of the Mackay Camera Club, which has been in recess for some time, took place on Tuesday evening last, when there was a fair attendance of members. The President (Mr. J. Williams) occupied the chair. A syllabus was arranged up to the end of the financial year in May. The demonstrations which will be given are a particularly interesting series, and members are urged to take full advantage of them.

Amongst the items is a paper, to be read by Mr. L.L. Green, on "Lenses and their use in Photography". The date of this lecture will be announced later.

The club decided to purchase a very fine daylight enlarging and copying camera, which should prove a boon to members, who will be able to enlarge their pictures without any trouble. The matter of providing a dark-room was again brought forward, and there appears every probability that this long desired convenience will soon be available to members.

The stereoscopic competition for which prizes are being offered by Mr. and Mrs. Woodley, will close in four weeks, and members are urged to participate in it and to have their entries in the hands of the secretary for the first meeting in March.

The President mentioned that show time was drawing near, and it was expected that members would do their utmost to have the club well represented in the photographic section.

The subject for next meeting will be "Gaslight Printing", by Mr. Rowe. Members are invited to bring along any negatives from which they would like prints taken. Two nominations for membership were received.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Tuesday evening last. The President, Mr. J.F. Williams, occupied the chair, and there was a moderate attendance of members. Owing to unfavorable weather conditions the club outing to Slade Point was postponed. It will be considered at the next meeting on the 21st.

Entries for the stereoscopic competition should be in the secretary's hands next meeting night.

The subject for the evening was "copying" and a very fine demonstration was given by the president, Mr. Williams, who used the very fine enlarging and copying camera recently acquired by the club. Members are advised to take full advantage of the opportunity of using this enlarging camera. By its means and with the minimum of trouble enlargements can be made from the smallest negative up to 12 x 15 pictures. The President will be glad to afford members all the instructions necessary to use the outfit.

The subject for next meeting will be intensification and reduction of negatives and in the capable hands of the president the demonstration will be both interesting and instructive. Members are earnestly requested to make special efforts to attend the club meetings as it is most disheartening for a demonstrator to be met with the small attendances that have been in evidence lately.

SCHOOL OF ARTS
The monthly meeting of the committee of management of the Mackay School of Arts was held on Tuesday night.

A letter was read from the Mackay Camera Club thanking the committee for granting permission to erect a dark room on the veranda downstairs, and asking that permission be given to erect the room on the top story balcony. Mr. Hartley considered it would inconvenience the subscribers to the reading room if it was upstairs, and moved that the matter stand over for a month to see whether any subscribers had any objection to the proposal. Mr. Denning seconded. An amendment moved by Mr. Storey and seconded, that the committee does not entertain the proposal of erecting the room upstairs, was carried.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Tuesday evening last. The vice-President (Mr. E.M. Cornwall) presided, and there was a good attendance of members. The question of the dark room was gone into, and it was ultimately decided to go on with the erection as soon as possible. The dark room should be a great acquisition to the club members as it can be used in conjunction with the fine daylight enlarger already possessed by the club.

Entries for the stereoscopic competition were handed in, and the results will be made known at the next meeting. One new member was balloted for and elected.

The subject for the evening was "Intensifying", and which owing to the unavoidable absence of the President, was demonstrated by Mr. Dupuy, who undertook the task and gave a most interesting and instructive description of the process he used and was accorded a very hearty vote of appreciation.

At the next meeting of the club, Mr. L.L. Green will give an address on "Lenses and Light", and as this is a most interesting subject members are urged to attend, and are also at liberty to invite any friend who might be interested.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The annual general meeting of the Mackay Camera Club took place at the club room on Saturday evening last. The President, Mr. Williams, presided, and there was a full attendance of members.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patrons, Messrs. W. HoIyoake, P.E. Armati, and W.J. Manning; President, Mr. J.F. Williams, (re-elected): vice-presidents, Mrs. Woodley, (re-elected), Miss Black; treasurer, Mr. E.M. Cornwall; operator, Mr. Rowe.

The Office of Secretary was left open until next meeting. Mr. Goodrick consented to act pro. tem.

A competition "Still Life Studies", was arranged for prints to be handed in to the secretary on May 30. A syllabus was arranged for the first term, embracing a great variety of subjects; that for the next meeting being "Sepia Toning", by Mr. Dupuy. One new member was proposed and a ballot will be taken at next meeting.

A pleasing feature of the meeting was a presentation by the members to the retiring president, Mr. J.F. Williams. The vice-president (Mr. E.M. Cornwall) made the presentation. He asked Mr. Williams to accept a small wallet and its contents. He mentioned that Mr. Williams had carried out the duties of president since the formation of the club, and not only had he guided it along right lines, but he had also given much of his time to its welfare and advancement. At the end of the fourth year the members felt they would not allow the occasion to pass without expressing in some slight degree their appreciation of his efforts on behalf of the club. The intrinsic value might be small, but the members hoped it would be accepted in the spirit in which it was offered, not as a reward for services rendered, for it would be quite impossible to repay him for all he had done for the club, but simply as a slight expression of the esteem in which he is held. All the members hoped the happy camaraderie of the Mackay Camera Club would long continue under his guidance. Mr. Williams was quite taken by surprise and very feelingly acknowledged the gift.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the rooms on Tuesday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. William's) occupied the chair and there was a moderate attendance, including several visitors. Several entries were handed in for the "Study it Still Life" competition, and the date for receipt of same was extended for two weeks. Members are urged to take part in these club competitions and have their entries ready in good time.

Miss Davis was elected to the position of secretary for the current year. Members are reminded that subscriptions for the year 1922-23 are now due, and the treasurer will be pleased to receive same.

The subject for the evening should have been "Stereo Work", by Mr. Rowe, but owing to that gentleman's absence in the country a postponement was necessary. The President came to the rescue and delivered a most interesting address on "Exposure of Plates and Films". Many amateurs find it difficult to master this most essential part of picture making, and the president's remarks were thoroughly appreciated.

The subject for next meeting will be "Tank development", and Mr. Keller will be the demonstrator. One new member was balloted for and duly elected.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club rooms on Tuesday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) occupied the chair and there was a fair attendance. The subject for the evening was "enlarging" by the President; it proved both instructive and interesting, the demonstrator being most explicit in all points regarding various subjects, lenses, papers, etc. It is rather a pity that on such occasions members do not make a special effort to be present, as they lose the chance of gaining a great amount of knowledge; at the same time it is very discouraging to the demonstrator, who goes to no end of trouble for the special benefit of the members, to have a small audience. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Williams. An alteration was made in the "street scene" competition; it has been changed to "animal study" entries close August 22.

Thursday 10th August 1922

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
A demonstration of transparency and lantern slide work was the main feature at the meeting of the Mackay Camera Club on Tuesday evening last. The president, Mr. J.F. Williams, handled the subject in his usual masterly manner and clearly demonstrated the feasibility of producing these charming transparencies and lantern slides without the aid of a dark room. Members were invited to try their hands at the process, and, under the capable supervision of the president, they were entirely successful. This charming branch of photography is worthy of more attention than is usually devoted to it by amateurs. Nothing is more beautiful than a good transparency and these can easily be made from all ordinary films and plates. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the president for this delightful demonstration. Members are reminded that the "animal study" competition closes on the 22nd of this month, and pictures should be handed in by that date.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Tuesday evening last. Vice-president Mrs. Woodley occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. Mr. W. Kippen was elected a member of the club and another was proposed for ballot at next meeting. Prints for the "animal study" competition must be handed in by the 19th of next month.

It was decided to have a club outing on September 23rd next the site selected being the western end of the Goose Ponds. Prizes donated by one of the Patrons, Mr. Armati will be offered for the best picture taken during the day.

The subject for the evening was "stereopraphy", with an ordinary camera. Mr. Rowe was the demonstrator with a Kodak and stand of his own designing; he clearly explained the whole process. He also undertook to give a field demonstration at the outing on September 23rd, and to donate a prize to be competed for on that day. A hearty vote of appreciation was accorded Mr. Rowe on the motion of Messrs. Goodrich and Cornwall.

The subject for next meeting will be "Copper Toning". The president, Mr. Williams, will handle the subject, and members are urged to attend and get an insight into this most charming branch of photography.

Mr. Crow, a foundation member of the club and first vice-president, attended as a visitor, and was cordially welcomed by the members. Mr. McKinnon was elected a member of the club. The outing for the 24th was discussed and final arrangements left over until next meeting. The subject for the evening was "Copper toning", and the President gave a fine demonstration of this beautiful branch of photography. He was accorded a cordial vote of appreciation at the end of the demonstration. At the next meeting Mr. Dupuy will handle the joint subjects of intensification and reduction, and members are advised not to miss it. Pictures for the "animal study" competition must be handed in at the next meeting.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The Mackay Camera Club entertained its members and friends in the Star Theatre last evening with one of those delightful entertainments which have become so popular. There was a good attendance and the subject was a lantern evening, entitled "A Trip Across Canada", the lecturer being Mr. John Smith, a visitor to Mackay. Mr. Smith has made the journey which he described on several occasions and is qualified to make his hearers familiar with its beauties and natural magnificence. The views were entrancing, whether of the wonderful Rockies, the prairies, lakes, or cities, and as they were screened the audience became possessed in some small degree at least with what such a journey represents in an educative sense. Mr. J.F. Williams proposed a vote of thanks to the lecturer and this was carried with very hearty acclamation. The lantern was operated by Mr. Rowe, who was kept busy following the rapid changes of scenery as the lecture proceeded, but as usual he carried out this part of the work with unqualified success.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
After the usual Christmas recess the Mackay Camera Club resumed its activities on Tuesday evening last, when the President (Mr J.R. Williams) presided over a fair attendance of members. A syllabus was arranged for all meetings up to the end of the financial year in May.

An outing was arranged to be held at Mary Creek on March 4th, final arrangements for which will be announced at the next meeting. The club outings are always enjoyable, and this one should be particularly so, as Mr. Rowe will give a practical demonstration of stereoscopic work with an ordinary camera, and a prize will be offered for the best stereo picture taken by the members present at the outing.

The subject for next meeting will be gaslight printing, by Mr. Rowe. Members are urged to make a special effort to attend the meetings of the Club and also to bring along as many new members as possible.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Tuesday evening last. The chair was occupied by Mrs. Woodley) vice-president, and there was a very moderate attendance of members. The demonstration for the evening had to be held over as the demonstrator (Mr. Rowe) was suddenly called away on urgent business.

The outing for the 4th inst. was discussed and final arrangements left in the hands of a sub-committee, consisting of Mrs. Woodley, Miss Davis and Miss Gallantie.

The subject for next meeting will be "Enlarging", by the President, Mr. J.F. Williams, and as the new curtains for excluding light from the room will be used for the first time, the whole process of exposure and development will be carried out in comfort and in full view of those present. Three new members were proposed and will be balloted for at next meeting.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Tuesday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) presided, but owing to counter attractions the attendance of members was very small. Three new members were elected, and one proposed for ballot at next meeting.

The subject for the evening was "Enlarging", and this was demonstrated by the President. The curtains for darkening the room were used for the first time and proved satisfactory in every way. Unfortunately the lantern condenser was fractured by the heat, and that accident made it impossible for the best results to be obtained. However, present thoroughly enjoyed the demonstration, and a very cordial vote of appreciation was accorded Mr. Williams for his efforts.

The subject for next meeting is to be "Bromide printing", and one of the lady members, assisted by the president, will demonstrate.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The annual general meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Tuesday evening last. The President Mr. J.F. Williams, presided, and there was a fair attendance of members. Consideration was given to the meeting night of the club, and it was decided that the club meet once a month on the second Thursday in each month. It is hoped this arrangement will suit members and that there will be good attendances. It was decided to start the new year with a club outing, that the club pay all expenses and that it be an annual function. The first meeting will be hold on the 27th of this month, and all members are urged to take part in it. A ladies committee was appointed to arrange details of catering, etc., and members are requested to advise the secretary of their intention to be present.

The election of officers for the ensuing term was then proceeded with and resulted as follows: Patrons, Messrs. W.W. Holyoake, P.E. Armati, and W.J. Manning (re-elected); President, Mr J.F. Williams; vice-presidents, Mrs. Woodley and Mr. H. Dupuy; secretary, Miss Davis; treasurer, Mr. E.M. Cornwall; committee, Misses Dobson and Wiles, Messrs. Keller and Donnan.

Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring officers, also to the Patrons for their generous assistance, and to the "Daily Mercury" for publishing reports of the various club functions. A syllabus was arranged for the first half-year. The subjects are varied and interesting, and it is to be hoped members will attend regularly: Members are reminded that subscriptions are now due for the ensuing year.

The subject for next meeting, which will be held on Thursday evening, June 14, will be "Gas Light Printing", and the demonstration will be in the able hands of Mr. Rowe.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
A special general meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Thursday evening. Mrs. Woodley (vice-president) presided, and there was a good attendance. Arrangements were finalized for the club's outing on the 27th. It is intended to make this an annual function, and as the whole expense of the outing will be borne by the club it is hoped that all members, without exception, will attend. Cars will leave the club's headquarters (School of Arts) at 9.30, and proceed to Alligator Creek. During the day several competitions in photography will be conducted one being a landscape subject with figures, for which prizes are offered. Mr. Rowe will give a demonstration of stereoscopic photography with an ordinary camera, and he also offers prizes for the best picture taken by members after his demonstration. Members are requested to notify the secretary of their intention to be present, not later than Wednesday next, so that catering arrangements can be made. All members are earnestly requested to attend this outing and make it as successful and enjoyable as other outings of this club have proved.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club, which was held in the Club room on Thursday evening last, was more than usually interesting. The president (Mr. J.F. Williams) presided, and there was a good attendance of members. Arrangements were completed for the club outing to be held at Dumbleton on the 14th. The place selected is a pretty one, offering a great variety of subjects for the camera, and it is hoped there will be keen competition for the prizes offered for the day by the president and treasurer. One new member was balloted for and duly elected.

The subject for the evening was "Correct, exposure", and this was handled by the President in his usual masterly way. After explaining how essential to a good negative is the correct exposure of the plate, he pointed out that if the plate is under exposed no intensification can bring out detail that is not there ; but in cases where the plate is under-developed (quite a common failure of the impatient photographer) intensification will make a negative worth printing from. With the aid of a monoscope the President demonstrated the beauty of transparencies made from a properly exposed and developed negative. The transparencies used by the demonstrator were greatly admired by the members, and a very hearty vote of appreciation was accorded him.

The subject for next meeting, which will be held on the 9th of next month, is to be "re-touching", and Vice-President, Mrs. Woodley, will demonstrate. Re-touching is a very essential part of portraiture, and members who are in the habit of "taking" their friends will no doubt be glad of an opportunity to obtain an insight into this beautiful branch of the art.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The usual monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Thursday evening last. The President, Mr. J.F. Williams, was in the chair, and the attendance was better than usual. A report on the Dumbleton outing was received, and all who took part in it expressed the opinion that it was one of the best the Club has held. The weather was delightful, the locality pretty and interesting, and many good pictures were obtained. Pictures in the competition should be handed in to the Secretary without delay.

There were two demonstrations during the evening, the first by Mrs. Woodley, who gave a most interesting and instructive little talk on the subject of re-touching. This is a branch of photography of which the ordinary amateur knows very little, and the Club is fortunate in having a lady member who is not only able but willing to help others in that particular branch. The President then gave a thoroughly practical lesson on "Gaslight Printing". The negatives he used were good and the manipulation perfect, so that members were treated to a demonstration carried out in the President's very best style.

The subject for next meeting, which will be held on September 13th, is "Copying and Enlarging", no doubt members will attend in full force on that occasion. A reminder — subscriptions for the current year are now due.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Thursday evening. The President (Mr. Williams) presided, and there was a very large attendance of members.

The subjects for the evening embraced both copying and enlarging and these were demonstrated by the President in his usual masterly manner. A most interesting and instructive item was an enlargement made from a microscopic negative only half the size of a postage stamp, up to 12 1/2 inches. This was done with perfect success, and the resultant enlargement was perfect in every detail. Copying is a most useful branch of photography, and the lecturer was able to demonstrate how simple the process is provided proper care is taken and that the necessary apparatus is available. All present thoroughly appreciated the efforts of the President to make the demonstrations both interesting and instructive, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him. Several visitors who were present expressed the pleasure they felt for the invitation to be present.

It was suggested that the club organize an outing to Eimeo on the 23rd or 30th. Members wishing to take part can all particulars from the secretary.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club-room on Thursday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) presided, and there was a good attendance of members. Two new members were elected, and one was nominated for ballot at next meeting. The club's dark room is now completed and available to members. This should prove a great convenience and help, and it is desirable that members should take full advantage of it and thus justify the heavy expenditure the club has incurred in its erection. Access to the dark-room can be obtained by members at any time by applying to the secretary of the School of Arts. The club is indebted to the committee of the School of Arts for permission to erect the dark-room on the premises of that institution.

The subject for the evening was "Enlarging from Print", and this was handled by the President in his usual masterly manner. Two 10 by 12 enlargements were made from very small negatives, and the whole demonstration was entirely successful. In proposing a vote of appreciation, Mrs. Woodley (vice-President) expressed the opinion that the club was fortunate in having as President a gentleman so well qualified to carry out the duties, not only of presiding over meetings, but of capably demonstrating in so many branches of the art of photography. These remarks were endorsed by other members, and the motion was carried by acclamation.

The next meeting of the club will be held on December 13, and will take the form of the ever-popular lantern evening. The club will then go into recess until after the holidays.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
After the usual holiday recess, the Mackay Camera Club resumed its activities at the club room on Thursday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) presided and there was a moderate attendance of members. The syllabus for the half-year was considered, and demonstrations in the various branches of the art were arranged. At the next meeting the method of gaslight printing will be demonstrated by the club's lantern operator, Mr. Rowe. A club outing was arranged for the 24th at SeaView, and a sub-committee appointed to make arrangements; particulars can be ascertained from the secretary. Two new members were proposed and will be balloted for at next meeting. Now that the club is active again, it is to be hoped that members will attend the meetings in full force and take full advantage of the various demonstrations. A competition in Landscape Photography has been arranged, and as this subject is one that appeal's to all amateurs it is to be hoped there will be keen competition for the several prizes.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The sixth annual general meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room at the School of Arts on Thursday night. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) was in the chair and there was a good attendance of members. After ordinary business had been disposed of, Mr. Carlyle gave a most interesting and instructive demonstration taking as his subject the intensification and reduction of negatives. He led his hearers through the whole process and showed how a negative should be improved were it either too dense or too thin. He also pointed out that although the process is a most useful one at times, it is always better if the negative is at all faulty to take the picture over again where possible, for although a negative which is either too thick or too thin may be improved by intensification or reduction, it cannot possibly be as good as if it had been properly made in the first place. Mr. Carlyle was accorded a hearty vote of appreciation at the conclusion of his address.

The election of officers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with and resulted as follows: Patrons, Messrs. W.J. Manning. W.W. Holyoake, and P.E. Armati; President, Mr. J.F. Williams ; vice-Presidents, Mrs. Woodley, and Mr. A. Keller; treasurer, Mr. R.L. Donnan; lantern operator, Mr. Rowe; secretary, Miss E.M. Hawley; committee, Miss Dobson and Miss Grant and Messrs A. Grant and Lambert.

Mr. J.F. Williams, who was unanimously elected to the position of President for the seventh successive year, thanked the members for placing him in that position again. He said he would be only too pleased to make way for some one else in the position, but as the members had honored him by again electing him, he would do his best for the advancement of the club. He urged members to attend the meetings regularly and also to do their best to take part in the various club competitions as it is only by comparing one's work with that of others and by having it criticized by competent judges that one may be able to perfect oneself in the fascinating art.

The subject for next meeting is "Tank Development", and as the subject is in the able hands of Mr. Keller, it should be of particular interest to those who use that method in their work.

A committee meeting will be held on Thursday evening next to arrange for the annual club outing. It is very desirable that the club should be properly represented at the coming Show, and members are urged to do their best to assist the President in his efforts to put in a good exhibit.

Friday 4th July 1924

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The members of the Mackay Camera Club and others interested in photography, are asked to attend a special meeting of the club at the School of Arts to-night (Friday) at 8pm. A demonstration will be given by the representative of Harringtons Ltd, on Wellington bromide and Gaslight papers, which is a new paper of special interest to amateurs. Other interesting items will be explained.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Thursday evening. The President, Mr. J.F. Williams, presided, and there was a good attendance of members. Reference was made by several members to the very creditable display by the club at the late Show; it was pointed out that the bulk of the work in connection with the exhibit was undertaken by the president. A special note of appreciation was accorded that gentleman for his efforts. It might be pointed out that the exhibit is now on view at the Red Arcade in Victoria-street, and those who did not have the pleasure of viewing it at the show can do so at the Red Arcade.

The subject for the evening was "Retouching", and this was demonstrated by the vice president (Mrs. Woodley) in her usual thorough way. After explaining and exhibiting the necessary equipment for the operation, the lecturer carefully demonstrated the first steps in the art. Members were keenly interested and accorded Mrs. Woodley a cordial vote of appreciation of her efforts.

A club outing was arranged to take place at Slade Point on Monday week and a prize is offered for the best seascape taken during the day. Particulars as to mode of transit, etc., can be obtained from the secretary.

The subject for next meeting will be "Gaslight printing", and as this process is very much used by amateurs a good attendance is expected.

MACKAY SHOW
The annual show was held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and for the first time for a number of years the weather was splendid right through.

Most of the work in the fine arts section was very poor, but the photographs were good. The Mackay Camera Club had a fine non-competitive exhibit of the work of various members. It comprised some hundreds of photographs and attracted a good deal of attention.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
A special meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club's room at the School of Arts last Thursday. The chair was occupied by the President (Mr. J.F. Williams). who introduced Mr. H. Kington, representing Harrington Ltd., Brisbane. Mr. Kington congratulated the club on the fine exhibit of photos at the Show and said the collection consisted of some fine pictorial effects and enlargements, and hoped next year the people of Mackay would see a similar exhibit of the Mackay Camera Club. During the evening Mr. Kington gave a lecture on photography, pointing out that it was not a very expensive hobby providing the members studied their subject before taking it, and not like many did in the early stages, who often found they had a collection of pictures of little or no interest whatever, all they had was the pleasure of pressing the release. The members had the pleasure of a demonstration on Wellington bromide and gaslight paper showing the beautiful range of tones and the latitude allowed on such papers. Those present were very impressed and are looking forward to another evening with Mr. Kington, who intends to give a demonstration on enlarging and flashlight photography in the near future. A competition will be held for the members during the month on Wellington papers.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Thursday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. Three new members were elected and three others nominated for ballot at next meeting.

The subject for the evening was a particularly interesting one, a cinematograph exhibition by Mr. L. Gould, who with the aid of a Pathe home cinema; put on the screen many lovely and interesting pictures, including the Niagara Falls, views in Venice, Burma, Java, etc. He also demonstrated a slow motion picture, illustrating the opening of a flower, showing in 30 seconds the development of 24 hours. The President, on behalf of the members thanked Mr. Gould most heartily for his most interesting and unique demonstration, pointing out the cinema added a new interest to photography, and the compact little machine which Mr. Gould handled would enable the pictures to be enjoyed in the home circle.

The photo competition was held over until next meeting and members are urged to have their entries ready by that time without fail. The subject for next meeting is a particularly interesting one, and the fact that new members are coming in freely should ensure a good attendance.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Thursday evening last. The president, Mr. J.F. Williams, presided, and there was a good attendance of members. Three new members were elected and several nominated for ballot at next meeting.

The subject for the evening was stereoscopic work, and this was demonstrated by the president and Mr. Gould, who exhibited many beautiful pictures in illustration of the subject. They also explained how these fascinating pictures can be secured by an ordinary camera, and at the conclusion were accorded a hearty vote of appreciation.

It was announced that a club outing to Slade Point would take place on Sunday week, when a prize donated by Mr. C. Harrison would be competed for. A good attendance is anticipated.

The subject for next meeting will be "Notes on a trip to New Zealand", by Mr. R.L. Donnon. The lecture will be illustrated by pictures taken by that gentleman.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the club room on Thursday evening. The President. Mr. J.F. Williams, was in the chair and there was a fair attendance of members. One new member was balloted for and elected. The result of the recent competition was announced, Mr. A. Grant being the winner.

The subject for the evening was a most interesting travel lecture by Mr. R.L. Donnan, treasurer of the club, who, with the aid of a beautiful series of lantern slides, led his audience along the route of a trip recently taken through New Zealand. Some of the beauties of Milford Haven and other beauty spots of that charming land were illustrated and described, and some of its cities were also dealt with. Mr. Donnan's lecture was highly appreciated, and in moving a vote of thanks Mr. Keller pointed out how valuable photography was to those who are fortunate enough to be able to travel and, incidentally, to those who stay at home, who have the pleasure of viewing many beautiful pictures such as those which had just been thrown on the screen. Mr. A. Grant, seconded the motion, and pointed out that club members were much indebted to the President, Mr. Williams, both for his assistance in producing the slides and for the able way in which he manipulated the lantern. The motion was carried by acclamation.

The next meeting of the club will be the last of this session, after which the club will go into recess until after the holidays.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Tuesday evening last. The President, Mr. J.F. Williams, presided and there was a good attendance of members. Judging from the interest taken the new arrangement to meet every alternate Tuesday should prove very satisfactory.

After formal business had been attended to a demonstration of sepia toning was given by Mr. Dupuy. The process was carefully explained and practically demonstrated; all present were interested and no doubt many will now use this process to give variety to their collection of prints.

The outing to Eimeo which had to be postponed owing to the inclemency of the weather, will take place on Sunday next. Members wishing to attend can obtain all particulars from the secretary, Miss Hawley.

The subject for next meeting will be "enlarging", and as the President will handle the subject, all attending will be assured of a most interesting and instructive demonstration.

An important matter bearing on the welfare of the Club will be discussed at next meeting and all members are urged to attend.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The annual general meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held on Tuesday evening last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) was in the chair, and there was a fair attendance of members. The principal business of the evening was the election of officers for the ensuing year, and this resulted as follows:

Patrons, Messrs. P.E. Armati, W.W. Holyoake, and W.J. Manning; President, Mr. J.F. Williams (re-elected for the eighth time); vice-Presidents, Mrs. Woodley and Mr. Alex. Grant; hon. treasure Mr. R.L. Donnan; hon. lantern operator, Mr. Rowe; hon. secretary, Miss E.M. Hawley; committee, Miss Grant and Miss Gallanty, and Messrs. Gould and W.L. Grant.

After ordinary business had been disposed of, the President gave a most instructive and interesting demonstration on the subject of "Enlarging" with a small No. 2 Brownie camera. After explaining the method, several enlargements were made by the demonstrator and some of the members. These were enlarged to eight times the original size, and were perfect in every way, proving that splendid enlargements can easily be made by the aid of one of the cheapest cameras on the market. All present were delighted with the demonstration, and a cordial vote of appreciation was carried by acclamation.

The subject for next meeting will be "Enlarging Transparencies", which is a most fascinating branch of photography, and members are advised not to miss it. Subscriptions for the new year are now due.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Sunday last. The President (Mr. J.F. Williams) was in the chair and there was a fair attendance of members. One new member was nominated for ballot at next meeting, and after other formal business had been disposed of the President gave a demonstration in the working of Nepera paper, showing the variation in print according to the distance from the light. Members then made prints from the different examples with completely successful results.

After outlining the Club's exhibit for the forthcoming Show, the President announced that the next meeting of the club would be held on 16th June, and specially requested a full attendance of members on that evening as it was necessary to finalize arrangements for the club's exhibit at the Show, and other matters.

MACKAY SHOW
The annual exhibition of the Pioneer River Farmers and Graziers Association was opened on Tuesday in glorious weather.

The fine arts and photographic sections also attracted numerous entries. A non-competitive display by the Mackay Camera Club is deserving of special mention. It contained many hundreds of photographs of all sizes. Special praise was given by the judges to the enlargements and photographs in color.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackay Camera Club was held in the Club room on Tuesday evening last. The President, Mr. J.F. Williams, presided, and there was a very good attendance of members. After routine business had been disposed of members were treated to a most interesting lecture by Mr. R.L. Donnan, who took for his subject, "New Zealand, its beauty spots and places of interest". Mr. Donnan very recently enjoyed a tour through that country and used his camera to such good purpose that he was able to illustrate his lecture with many lantern slides of excellent beauty and interest. The lecturer was accorded a most hearty vote of appreciation, and the hope was expressed that other members would follow his example of using their camera freely when traveling, so that the results of their wanderings could be enjoyed by those less fortunate ones who have to stay at home.

The subject for next meeting will be lantern slide work, and as the president will handle it, members are assured of a practical and interesting demonstration.

After formal business had been disposed of, a most interesting and instructive demonstration of Lantern Slide making was given by Mr. Donnan, who kindly handled the subject in the absence of the president. All present were pleased and interested in the demonstration and Mr. Donnan was accorded a very hearty vote of appreciation. The subject for next meeting will be "Copying", and no doubt members will be glad to have an opportunity of getting an insight into this most fascinating branch of photography.

CAMERA CLUB EXHIBIT
An excellent collection of photographs was displayed by the Mackay Camera Club as a non-competitive entry at the Show this week. The club is to be congratulated on the extensive range of pictures that were on view. All sizes of cards were included in the exhibit, from the small pocket camera size to that of enlargements. Old times in Mackay were vividly recalled by the photos of a group of Solomon Island boys, taken 40 years ago and reproduced as an enlargement by Mr. J.F. Williams. Another glimpse of the past by the same amateur was the enlarged picture of the first A.J.S. Bank built in Mackay. This gave some idea of the materials used in the early days of the town, the roof of the building being of bark upon a framework of round saplings. The walls were a mixture of galvanized iron and bark. Latter-day pictures in the collection included two enlargements of the new Holy Trinity Church of England, one being of the interior and the other the exterior. Many well selected views in different parts of the district were also included, and a photograph of the President of the club, Mr. J.F. Williams, occupied a prominent position. The exhibit gave visitors to the district an opportunity of gaining some idea of local beauty spots, and was altogether a fine advertisement.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
At the annual general meeting of the Mackay Camera Club, held in the School of Arts last Thursday evening. Mr. J.F. Williams, who has been president for 11 years, declined to accept the Position again, saying that while he would continue to do all he could for the club in other directions he would prefer to see someone else in the chair. After some discussion Mr. A.W. Keller was elected President. Other officers elected were; Patrons. Messrs P. E. Armati and W.W. Holyoake; vice-President, Mr. A. Grant; secretary, and treasurer, Mr. H.M. Grant; lantern operator, Mr. J.F. Williams.

Obituary

EDWARD MARLER CORNWALL

The children of the gold-rush period of Victoria are rapidly passing the Great Divide. One of them, E.M. Cornwall saw Melbourne develop from a gold-rush town to the vast modern city as we know it now. Born on May 10, 1860, in one of the suburbs which had a few open paddocks in the midst of the primeval bush, as a child he saw many a pack-horse train leave for the North. In that bush he developed that love of Nature that was the leading characteristic throughout his life. As a youth he followed the game of lacrosse with some success, but eventually abandoned it for yachting, chiefly, so that he could study the haunts of fish, and many a week-end he spent on the boats of the fishermen. When a young man, Queensland offered new fields for Nature students, and at Townsville he started his life's work. He had made himself proficient in taxidermy and photography, and many specimens are now to be seen in the various museums and private collections in the South. He made several discoveries which bear his name (Cornwallii), decided the question of food of various species of birds, and became a stout defender of the insectivora. As an authority of this science in North Queensland he was unrivaled; his researches extended along the whole littoral westward to beyond the coastal range, from Mackay to Cairns. His photos of bird life along the Barrier Reef have been used in authoritative publications. He, with his wife, assisted Banfield, of Dunk Island ("The Beachcomber") to settle down in his island home. His interest in gardening is well known locally; as "Melaleuca" his weekly contributions to the 'Mercury' were a familiar feature. He was a member of the Royal Australian Ornithologists Union, Royal Geographic Society of Australia, the Geographic Society (U.S.A.), the Chambers of Commerce in Cairns and Mackay, Commodore of Mackay Yacht Club, vice-president Mackay Camera Club, and vice-president North Side Progress Association. As a sergeant in the Townsville Company, Kennedy Regiment, he was an efficient non-com, and a reliable team shot. In business he held the position of manager of Russell Wilkins's Red Arcade at Cairns, and later at Mackay.

He leaves his wife and daughter (Mrs. R. Shinn), North Side, two sisters (Mesdames L. Borthwick and J. Snowdon, Sydney), and six grandchildren. His life was an active one; cheerful and optimistic, ready to encourage progress, his advice in all things horticultural was sound, backed by long experience. He was generous and sympathetic to a fault, and will be missed sadly by his friends and intimates — indeed, by the whole community. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was attended by a number of friends of the deceased who recognized his work as a citizen and wished to pay their respects to one who had passed on. Rev. K. Tregear of the Church of England, conducted service at the graveside.

MACKAY CAMERA CLUB
The Mackay Camera Club continues to progress favorably. So far we have had an average attendance of about twenty members, with several prospective members in view. Our program committee has arranged a series of demonstrations and lectures. Mr. Schmidtke provided the first demonstration on enlarging, very kindly bringing along all the necessary apparatus himself. It is hoped to have a different demonstration at each of our regular fortnightly meetings.

We have had one field day to one of the local beaches. Those fortunate enough to attend were very enthusiastic at the results. More field days have been arranged.

We have also held our first competition, and the entries were very encouraging. Mr. Breakwell was awarded first in the A GRADE section, and Mr. A. Howard first in the B GRADE. Competitions will be held once a month.
