MANLY CAMERA CLUB
The Club’s First Annual General Meeting was held at the Manly Literary Institute on Thursday, 31st August.

Presentation of the Annual Report and Financial Statement disclosed the continued healthy state of the Club.

Speakers praised the work of the retiring President, Mr. J. Phillips, Hon.Secretary Mr. K. Mossop, and other officers and members.

In its foundation, the Club was indebted to Messrs. Kodak (Aust.) Pty. Ltd. for the advice and services of several lecturers who, together with other speakers, have done so much to promote the steady improvement in members work.

The Club was fortunate in having the keen support of members like Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, Messrs. E. Douglas and M. Challenger, who are members of the Photographic Society of New South Wales.

During the year the Club had acquired a black board, a cupboard, a small library and an enlarger to help in demonstrations to members.

Officers elected for the ensuing year were: President, Mr. E.W. Douglas; Vice-President, Mr. K.B. Mossop; Hon. Secretary, Mr. F.B. Solomon; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. C.I. Tringham; Publicity Officer, Mrs. Norrison; Committee, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, Messrs. D. McLean, J. Wateren, J. Phillips and M. Challenger.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
Our Club is now in the second year of its existence and is still making steady progress. We have just overhauled our Constitution and Competition Rules.

We have been fortunate in obtaining the help of lecturers from Messrs. Kodak Pty. Ltd., and the Sydney Photographic Societies. These included Mr. Keast Burke, Dr. A.E.F. Chaffer, Messrs. J. Savage, K.D. Hastings, H.N, Jones, J.W. Metcalfe, A.W. Gale and W.C. Noble.

On 31st May the Club had the pleasure of a visit from Mr. Henri Mallard to judge the “Open” competition. Members much appreciated his commentary and his interesting talk on Camera Clubs and Photography generally; also his many reminiscences and anecdotes most aptly selected.

On an earlier occasion members enjoyed a splendid color slide screening and talk by Mr. W. Dye.

Club members were proud, too, in obtaining fifth place in the percentage of marks awarded in the recent Inter-Club Competition.

Visitors are always welcome to our meetings.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
Club member, Mr. M. Challenger, has been conducting a Beginners Class each evening for some weeks past. On July 12th, it was brought to a happy conclusion by a competition consisting of a print enlarged from one of a set of duplicate negatives of the same subject exposed by Mr. Challenger. The different results thus obtained were most interesting, the winners being S. Scotchmer and Keith Musgrave.

On 26th July we had the pleasure of a visit from Mr. A.R. Eade, of the Photographic Society of New South Wales, when he screened a collection of Kodachrome slides made on a trip to New Zealand. His splendid presentation and commentary was much enjoyed and appreciated by all.

On 9th August, we were fortunate in having a visit from Mr. J. Mortley, of Kodak (A/asia) Pty. Ltd., who acted as judge for the monthly Open competition. Results were:
“A” Grade: l, E.S. Franks; 2, E.W. Douglas; 3, G. Hollingworth.
“B” Grade: 1, C. Tringham; 2, Keith Musgrave; 3, Mrs. Morrison and J.J. Waterer.

Following a review of the prints submitted for the competition, Mr. Mortley showed a selection of prints from the A.P.-R. Prizewinning Prints Exhibition and in turn, gave an apt commentary on each print.

An enjoyable evening terminated in a vote of thanks being accorded Mr. Mortley for his judging and interesting talk.

On 23rd August Mr. Munnings gave members a demonstration of processing Dufaycolor film. Using chemicals he had brought with him for that purpose, the lecturer explained the use and action of each. Afterwards he invited questions especially from those who may have already attempted the process.

At present the club is conducting an exchange of prints and friendly competition with the Orange City Camera Club — further news of this later.

On 6th September, the competition “Record or News” was judged. Results were: 1, J.J. Waterer; 2, C.I. Tringham; 3, A. Patterson.

The committee hopes to encourage members to forward their prints to the A.P.-R. competitions.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
On 6th September, Mr. V.S. Joyce, a local photographer, delivered a very interesting lecture and demonstration on portrait lighting, which proved most instructive and which was appreciated by all.

At the second Annual General Meeting, held on the 20th September, the election of officers resulted: President, E. Douglas; Vice-President, J.J. Waterer; Hon.Secretary, F.B. Solomon; Hon. Treasurer, A.R. Patterson; Hon. Publicity Officer, Mrs. Harrison; Hon. Auditor, L. Hope-Caten. Committee: Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, Messrs. E. Ware, C.I. Tringham, S. Scotchmer, Keith Musgrave.

The second Annual Report and Financial Statement was read and a copy was presented to each member. Points from this showed that 24 club meetings were held during the year (excluding a Christmas social and committee meetings). After purchasing several items of equipment and paying for stationery, printing, etc., finances still showed a healthy state, but owing to increasing costs it was necessary to increase the fees to 15/- per annum in lieu of the previous charge of 10/-.

The club held twelve competitions (alternative “Open” and “Set” subjects), engaged sixteen outside lecturers and judges and fourteen talks were given by club members. A beginners class had been conducted and many happy inter-club relations had been formed.

The club wishes to place on record its thanks and appreciation of the help extended by the various photographic houses, clubs and others who have given up so much of their valuable time.

The year’s point score competition resulted:
A Grade: 1, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone; 2, J. Hollingworth; 3, E.W. Douglas.
B Grade: 1, J.J. Waterer; 2, F.B. Solomon; 3, C.I. Tringham.

On October 4th members were most happy in having a visit from Mr. Axel Poignant, who told us of his exploits as co-partner with Mr. Fritz Coro, of the American magazine Life, on an assignment to photograph, in color, parts of The Great Barrier Reef, Heron Island and Northern Australia. He described the various cameras and equipment used; Kodachrome and Ektachrome film being the photographic medium. Mr. Poignant fascinated members with his many stories of underwater and aerial photography and exploits. Mr. Geoff. Simmonds, a friend whom Mr. Poignant had brought with him, then gave members a talk and demonstration on the latest methods of color printing, thus completing a most happy and interesting evening.

On October 18th, members received a most informative talk on “Photographic Chemistry for Beginners”, given by Mr. A.S. Hart.

On November 1st, the club was fortunate in obtaining from Kodak (Aust.) Pty. Ltd., a loan collection of the pictorial color transparencies accepted at the Sixteenth Kodak International Salon of Photography. This action was much appreciated by members, who thoroughly enjoyed the screening.

B Grade: 1, A. M. Davidson (10 pts.); 2, S. Scotchmer (9 pts.); 3, A. Patterson (7 pts.).

On Saturday afternoon, 1st December, members, accompanied by Mr. Henri Mallard, had a most enjoyable afternoon outing at Harbord, Bayview and Church Point and many shutters were 'clicked'.

We take this opportunity of wishing all other clubs, photographic houses and kindred bodies a very happy and prosperous New Year.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
On December 13th, the club held its Christmas social meeting. It was attended by about 65 people in all, including guests, who had the pleasure of viewing a very good collection of movie films made and screened by Mr. Henri Mallard, of Kodak Ltd. These included a film covering a tour to New Guinea and another depicting kangaroo hunting in Australia. Members take this opportunity of thanking Mr. Mallard for his generous gesture. Light refreshments were served afterwards, during which visitors were able to fraternize with members while looking at a display of about 75 prints, the work of members during the past year. Guests included: Miss Smith (Manly Literary Institute), Mr. and Mrs. K.D. Hastings (The Camera Club of Sydney), Mr. Symonds (Photographic Society of New South Wales), Mr. Gow (Y.M.C.A. Camera Circle), Mr. Atkinson (Railway Institute Camera Club) and Mr. J. Mortley (Kodak Ltd.).

On 10th January, the competition “Australian Landscape” was judged by Mr. Keast Burke, of The A.P.-R., at the conclusion of which Mr. Burke gave an informal talk to members, during which many interesting phases of photography were discussed.

On 24th January, members had the pleasure of witnessing the screening of a film showing the manufacture of photographic goods and sensitized materials at the factory of the Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York. The club’s thanks to Mr. Hogarth, of Kodak Ltd., for presenting this screening.

On 7th February, the “Open” Competition was judged by Mr. H.P. James, of the The Camera Club of Sydney. After delivering a very apt and appreciated criticism, Mr. James held a general talk and discussion with members, which was much appreciated.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
February 21st, was our “Color Night”. To begin with, color movies were shown and then followed a presentation of 24 x 36mm Kodachrome slides made by several members. Commentaries were given by the contributors, whilst various slides were discussed amongst the audience. An interesting point to note is the development of this side of the club’s activities. The club is indebted to Messrs. Were, Faulks, and Mcllveen for the loan of their respective projectors and to Mr. A.S. Hart for his screen.

On March 6th, the Set Competition was “Man or Men at Work”. Members were pleased once again to welcome Mr. Symonds, of the Photographic Society of New South Wales, who acted as judge. The results were:
“A” Grade: l, J.J. Waterer (8 pts.); 2, F.B. Solomon (5 pts.).
“B” Grade: l, E.B. Coker (8 pts.), 2, A. Patterson (7 pts.); 3, E. Were (6 pts.).

The club was also fortunate on this evening of having a notable visitor, Mr. J.P. Carney, of Griffith. Mr. Carney gave an impromptu talk to members, relating the experiences of his early days in photography, how he came to exhibit his pictures, firstly in A.P.-R., then in Australian exhibitions and lastly in many oversea salons. Members were fascinated by the frankness of Mr. Carney’s talk and of the discussion of many of his exhibits in the A.P.-R. As a word of advice, he gave this moral: “Hard work by the individual and the application of advice given”.

Our club feels indeed grateful to both Mr. Symonds and Mr. Carney for this most enjoyable and instructive evening.

On March 20th, we were given a very instructive talk on Child Photography by Mr. Roy MacDonell, who impressed members by his simple approach to this interesting subject.

Our “Open” competition night was held on April 3rd, and once again we had with us for our judge Mr. A.W.Gale ARPS. Points awarded were:
“A” Grade: l, E.W. Douglas (10 pts.); 2, K.B. Mossop (8 pts.); 3, {Equal) Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone and C.J. Tringham (5 pts.)
“B” Grade: 1, A.R. Laurie (10 pts.); 2, Keith Musgrave (7 pts.); 3, E.B. Cohen (5 pts.).

After the judging Mr. Gale proceeded to give a most comprehensive criticism of each print, which later developed into a general talk on the importance of the selection of subject matter. He used as his main theme, “Principality”, emphasizing that the photographer should leave out all extraneous matter in composing the picture. Question time followed and a good evening was concluded with thanks to Mr. Gale for his constructive talk.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
On 17th April our guest speaker for the evening was Mr. J.C. Young, a well-known city commercial photographer.

Mr. Young chose for his lecture Synchro-flash Photography. With cameras and equipment he brought with him, he was able to demonstrate the synchro action of various shutters, including those on most of the more advanced types of cameras. The use of various types of flash bulbs was explained, how to handle the camera when taking 'flash', how the relative distance between the camera and subject would affect exposure — he also touched on portrait lighting. Our Club’s thanks go to Mr. Young for this most interesting talk and painstaking demonstration.

On Sunday, April 6th, an all-day outing was arranged by our club outing organizers, Messrs. S. Scotchmere and Keith Musgrave. About twelve members attended and a most enjoyable tour was made of the Windsor and Richmond districts. As a consequence, the latter “suffered”.

On May 1st, for our competition “Street, Road or Track”, we were once again pleased to welcome Mr. J. Mortley, of Kodak (A/asia) Pty. Ltd., as judge and guest speaker. His awards were:
A Grade: 1, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone (8 pts.); 2, J.J. Waterer (7 pts.); 3, F.B. Solomon (6 pts.).
B Grade: E.B. Cohen (8 pts.); 2 (equal), Keith Musgrave and S. Scotchmere (6 pts.); 3, A.R. Patterson (5 pts.).

After a comprehensive criticism of each print, Mr. Mortley went on to explain to members the main points that should be considered when making a picture of a street, road or track. To illustrate his points, he brought with him a small collection of A.P.-R. prizewinning prints. This was followed by a pleasant surprise—members were able to view a “Portfolio of 50 Masterpieces” by the late Dr. Julian Smith FRPS.

Our Club’s thanks again go to Mr. Mortley for his kind gesture both in bringing to us these interesting portfolios and also for his able judging of our competition.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
May 15th, was a Demonstration Night for our club, and Mr. E.W. Douglas gave a practical demonstration of enlarging. For this he used negatives brought by members who had found some difficulty in printing them and the solving of these problems brought much satisfaction to all present.

On May 29th, our monthly Open competition was held. Mr. E.W. Douglas acted as judge on this occasion and his awards were:
A Grade: 1 and 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone (8 and 7 pts.); 3 (equal), J.J. Waterer and F.B. Solomon (6 pts.).
B Grade: 1, B.A. Adrian (7 pts.); 2 (equal), B.A. Adrian and Keith Musgrave (6 pts.); 3, A.R. Patterson (5 pts.).

Also on this evening a competition of smaller (mostly half-plate size) prints was held, the subjects being limited to shots taken at the outing held on 6th April last. This proved a highly successful experiment and a 'popular vote' was taken of the many entries to ascertain the winning prints.

On Monday June 2nd, a night outing was held and attended by twelve of our members. A cold but enjoyable evening was had by all.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
On 12th June, Mr. Sidney Douglas, a recent arrival from England, screened a Kodachrome movie show of films he had brought with him, most of which were taken during the “Festival of Britain”. His use of synchronized recorded music and his commentary with the films impressed our members, who enjoyed the screening very much.

At the Inter-Club Competition held on 20th June, at the Y.M.C.A., members had the pleasure of obtaining second place in the percentage of marks awarded. Our member, K.B. Mossop is to be congratulated upon attaining the highest award (42 marks) for his print, “The Glazier”, which was proclaimed the Most Distinguished Print of the Competition.

Our competition “Outdoors at Night” held on June 26, was judged by Mr. K.D. Hastings of the The Camera Club of Sydney. His awards were:
A Grade; 1, E.W. Douglas, 8 pts; 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, 7 pts; 3, (equal) J.J. Waterer and F.B. Solomon, 5 pts.

Mr. Hastings then gave members a brief talk on each of the twenty-five prints-that his own Club had entered in the Inter-Club Competition and now afterwards loaned to us. This was greatly appreciated, especially by those who had been unable to view them previously.

Club member K.B. Mossop on 10th July, delivered a lecture on the making of paper negatives. His knowledge of the subject was borne out by the many negatives and prints made by him and displayed during his talk and by the fact that he had used this process in some of his exhibition prints. He demonstrated how the negative was made, how much easier it was to work on this than on a straight print and how any number of prints could be made from the final negative.

Once again we were indebted to Kodak Ltd. for the loan of a portfolio of prints on Press Photography. Members were pleased to view this unique collection.

Our Open Competition was judged by Mr. J. Hoey of The Camera Club of Sydney on July 24. Mr. Hoey, while giving a constructive criticism of each print, stressed the need for what he termed perception when setting out to take a photograph. The awards were:
A Grade: 1, C.I. Tringham, 8; 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone and V.S. Joyce (equal), 7; 3, Miss O’Neill and V.S. Joyce (equal), 6.
B Grade: 1, L. Hope-Caten, 7; 2, S. Scotchmer and Keith Musgrave (equal), 6; 3, Keith Musgrave, 5.

Members later viewed a number of Mr. Hoey’s own prints and he explained his reasons for taking them and the methods used. This proved most interesting and was appreciated by all.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
Once again members were pleased to welcome Mr. A. W. Gale ARPS on the evening of August 7, his topic being "Composition and Print Control". In his talk Mr. Gale first stressed the fundamentals of composition as observed by artists and then in turn discussed its main points, these being:
(1) Center of Interest, (2) The Dominant Highlight, (3) The Most Dramatic Effect, (4) The Importance of Stability and Support.

Then followed a demonstration of print control showing the effects, before and after, of treatment on some of the prints the lecturer had brought with him and Mr. Gale also explained the uses of oil reinforcement and various dyes. Members greatly appreciated his lecture.

On this evening we were also able to welcome a visitor — Mr. Webster of the Sunraysia Camera Club.

A trial innovation was introduced in our competition on August 21, as it had been decided to limit the dimensions of our Set Subjects, prints to be a maximum of half-plate size on 8" by 10" mounts. This change attracted twenty-five entries for our Tree Study Competition. Mr. J.S. Mortley of Messrs. Kodak (A/asia) Pty. Ltd., being our guest for the evening kindly consented to judge and criticize the prints. His awards were:
“A” Grade: 1 and 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone; 3, Miss O’Neill and F.B. Solomon (equal).
“B” Grade: 1, Keith Musgrave; 2, Mrs. Harrison and E.B. Cohen (equal); 3, Mrs. Harrison.

In his criticism Mr. Mortley pointed out that the subject was essentially the picture of a tree and all extraneous matter must be avoided, otherwise the picture tended to become a landscape.

Club member, G. Hollingworth, gave a demonstration on "Rubber Solution Mounting", using white Bostik diluted with carbon tetrachloride as the solvent. (Petrol would do as well he said). The advantage over water pastes was that it would not soak through the prints, which could be removed from their mounts again by soaking in the solvent if so desired

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
At the Third Annual General Meeting held on 4th September the election of officers resulted in: President, E.W. Douglas; Vice-President, J.J. Waterer; Hon.Secretary, F.B. Solomon; Hon. Treasurer, A.R. Patterson; Hon. Auditor, L, Hope-Gaten; Committee, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, Mrs. N. Harrison, Messrs. G. Hollingworth, S. Scotchmer and Keith Musgrave.

The third Annual Report and Financial Statement was read and a copy presented to each member. Points from this showed that 23 club meetings were held during the year (including the Christmas Social) as well as five committee meetings. Despite increased costs finances still showed a healthy state. The club held twelve competitions, alternatively Open and Set Subjects, obtaining the services of eighteen lecturers, including judges and several talks were given by our own members.

Outing organizers Messrs. S. Scotchmer and Keith Musgrave arranged outings at Windsor, Bayview and French’s Forest and one night-outing in Manly. All were well attended. The new club competition certificates now available were shown to members.

Our club wishes to place on record its thanks for the help extended to us by our kindred societies and clubs and also the various photographic houses for their help and co-operation. In particular we wish to thank Messrs. Kodak (A/asia) Pty. Ltd. for the loan of various portfolios of prints and color slides for exhibition at our meetings.

The year’s point score competition resulted in:
A Grade: 1, J.J. Waterer; 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone; 3, F.B. Solomon.
B Grade: 1, S. Scotchmer; 2, Keith Musgrave; 3, E.B. Cohen.

On September 18, we were indebted to Mr. J.L. Phillips of the Photographic Society of New South Wales for his judging, commentary and talk on the prints of our Open Competition.
His awards were:
A Grade: 1, J.G. Jude, 10; 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, 8; 3, Keith Musgrave, J.J. Waterer and J.G. Jude (equal), 7.
B Grade: 1, L. Hope-Gaten, 10; 2, E. Were, 7; 3, Mrs. N. Harrison and A.K. Laurie (equal), 6.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
In a talk given on October 2, club member A.S. Hart referred to "The Emotional Impact as Regards to Color" which the photographer received when first observing the picture he proposed to take. This feeling could later be translated when printing the picture and more use made of the various methods of toning at our disposal. For example, blue tone denoted a cold feeling; green a feeling of contentment; while brown depicted the Autumn or Harvest Time. Red mostly depicted blood and was forceful and disturbing but when mixed with other colors became interesting and beautiful, as in sunsets. The lecturer suggested that in lieu of the usual 'Just Black and White' many in-between shades and tones could be introduced, both by the method of direct development and by toning. Some beautiful and striking exhibits of these prepared by Mr. Hart were shown to the audience present who much appreciated his instructive lecture.

On 16th October, our competition "Against the Light" was judged by our Mr. E.W. Douglas whose awards were:
A Grade: 1, J.G. Jude, 8; 2, J.G. Jude and Keith Musgrave (equal) 7 each; 3, S. Scotchmer and Keith Musgrave (equal) 6 each.
B Grade: 1, L. Hope-Caten and Mrs. N.E. Harrison (equal) 7 each; 2, A.R. Patterson and L. Hope-Caten (equal) 5 each.

On this evening club member A.M. Davidson told us "How I Take My Child Studies". An amateur should have time at his disposal to live amongst the children, his subjects, and observe their habits, the clothes they wear and so on. Mr. Davidson was able to show a number of fine examples of studies taken by him during the many years he has spent at this fascinating hobby.

On the evening of October 30, members were given a practical demonstration of "Cloud Printing-In". For this we were fortunate in obtaining the services of Mr. H.P. James of the The Camera Club Of Sydney who, after explaining the methods he adopted and exhibiting several cloud negatives, proceeded to make a 15 by 12 tree enlargement and then to add the clouds to it. This instructive and fascinating lecture was appreciated by all present.

An Open competition night was held on November 13, and for the judging and criticism we were pleased to welcome Mr. G.S. Gow, President of the YMCA Camera Circle. He made awards to:
A Grade: J.G. Jude, F.B. Solomon, G. Hollingworth, Miss O’Neill, E.B. Cohen, Keith Musgrave and S. Scotchmer.
B Grade; Mrs. N.E. Harrison, C. Harrison and E. Were.

Member G. Hollingworth gave a very interesting talk on his experiences of "Picture Making in the Snow Country".

On 27th November, our competition Along the Waterfront was judged by Mr. K. B. Mossop, awards being: A Grade Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, J. G. Jude, E. B. Cohen, and F. B. Solomon. B Grade; C. Harrison and A. R. Patterson. Member E. Were also gave an interesting talk on making monochrome prints from color transparencies, in which he very ably explained his methods of working, exhibiting transparencies and the negatives and prints he obtained from them. Members were greatly impressed with the excellent results he obtained.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
On 11th December, the club held its Christmas Social Meeting which was attended by about fifty-six people including guests. Certificates of Merit awarded for the Yearly Competitions were presented to members by Mr. Henri Mallard. An additional prize for the winners of both A Grade and B Grade was in the form of a donation kindly given by Mr. J.L. Phillips, of the Photographic Society of New South Wales. The audience then viewed a screening of color movies and slides taken while on a trip to Lord Howe Island. Mr. A. Short also screened some of the members slides. During refreshment time, visitors were able to fraternize with members while looking at a display of about fifty-five prints, the work of members during the past year. Guests included Mr. Henri Mallard, Mr. S. Symonds (Photographic Society of New South Wales), Mr. J. Mortley (Kodak Ltd.), Mr. G.S. Gow and Mr. Graeham (both of YMCA Camera Circle).

On 8th January, short talks were given by members as follows: Mr. J.J. Waterer, "Portraits by Daylight", Mr. Keith Musgrave, "Hypo Economy" and "Bas-relief Process", Mr. J. Jude, "Photography and the World of Art" and Mr. V.S. Joyce, "Professional Methods".

The Open competition on 22nd January, was judged by Mr. Henri Mallard, whose helpful criticism is always appreciated. The awards were:

Mr. J.L. Phillips, of the Photographic Society of New South Wales, gave his exhibition “One-Man-Show” on February 5. This consisted of a collection of beautiful prints and the author gave a brief commentary on each exhibit, explaining the reason for taking the picture and the technique involved. Added interest was given them when the author related the comments they received when previously exhibited. This proved both useful and interesting.

On the evening of 19th February, our set competition "Pattern and Texture" was held, the judge being Mr. J. Mortley of Kodak Ltd. After explaining to members in some detail the many and varied forms of pattern and texture subjects Mr. Mortley gave a painstaking commentary on each print. His awards were:
A Grade: 1, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, 9; 2 and 3, J.B. Jude, 8 and 7.
B Grade: l and 2, L. Hope-Caten, 8 and 7; 3, Mrs. N.E. Harrison, 6.

Our first competition of color slides was held on the evening of 5th March, and Mr. W. Dye of the Photographic Society of New South Wales, who had been previously given the slides for pre-view and judging, was present to give an apt commentary on them. The judge remarked that, as in monochrome prints, many slides were in record class despite their good technical quality; but those of the winners were certainly very beautiful and he complimented their authors. In all nine members competed, with a total of 85 slides. The winners were: 1, W. Faulks; 2 and 3, O.G. Phillips. The meeting was attended by 27 members and in addition we were pleased to welcome nine visitors.

On March 19 we were fortunate in having Mr. K.D. Hastings to judge our Open competition. His awards were:
A Grade 1, J.G, Jude and J.J. Waterer (equal), 8pts; 2, J.G, Jude and Keith Musgrave (equal), 7.
B Grade: 1, L. Hope-Caten and K. Carter (equal), 8; 2, Mrs. N.E. Harrison, 7.

Mr. J. Hogarth of Kodak Ltd. gave a slide-talk on the use of filters on April 2. He explained the various types of filters and their influence upon the different kinds of film emulsions and illustrated their applications in the many branches of photography. Our thanks once again go to Mr. Hogarth for his very interesting lecture.

Our Set Competition "A Scene from Everyday Life" was held on the evening of April 16, and our Mr. E.W. Douglas was the judge. Following upon a very apt commentary his awards were:
A Grade : 1, F.B. Solomon, 9; 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, 8; 3, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, 7.
B Grade: 1, L. Hope-Caten, 8; 2, G. See, 7 and Mrs. N. E. Harrison, 7, (equal).

On 30th April, members were given a practical demonstration in the various methods of Print Toning by Mr. R. Nasmyth who is known to be well versed in this art. Processes shown were:
1. Gold toning to produce both blue and red tones — for blue a chlorobromide paper was necessary.
2. Sepia toning with thiocarbamide and caustic soda — in lieu of the usual sulphide method.
3. Copper toning, which gave brownish-black to chalk red tones.
4. The method of re-converting a sepia of bad color back to black and white by re-bleaching and re-developing. Interest was added by comparing the results of the finished prints with an untouched original.

On the evening of 14th May, Mr. J.L. Phillips of the Photographic Society of New South Wales judged our Open Competition. His awards were:
A Grade: 1, Keith Musgrave, 10; 2, (Equal), V.T. Joyce and M. Goodman, 8; 3, (Equal), J.G. Jude and Miss O’Neill, 7;
B Grade: 1, H.R. Patterson, 10; 2, B. Adrian, 8; 3, L. Hope-Caten, 7.

Once again our thanks go to Mr. Phillips for his attendance at our meeting, his judging and most interesting commentary.

On 25th May, members were given a Portraiture Demonstration by Mr. Henri Mallard. For this Mr. Mallard brought his own lights and background, for which we were deeply grateful. Points he stressed were:
(1) Use of panchromatic film;
(2) Use of make-up for the subject;
(3) Spend 5 to 10 minutes observing your subject;
(4) Remember good portraiture means modeling and the two sides of a face are seldom the same;
(5) Use of blue filter for artificial light;
(6) Do not get too close with a short focus lens;
(7) For children, use light backgrounds; for older persons a darker background.

Our Set Competition Architecture or Interior was held on June 11, and for this our judge was Mr. M.L. Challenger. As Mr. Challenger was originally a foundation member of our Club, we were pleased to welcome him back for this evening. His awards were:
A Grade: 1, S. Scotchmer, 9; 2, J. G. Jude, 7; 3, Keith Musgrave, 5.
B Grade: 1, L. Hope-Caten, 8; 2, Mrs. N.E. Harrison, 7; 3, A.R. Patterson, 6.

On this night we also screened members color slides, among which there were many pleasant surprises and this helped to make a most enjoyable evening.

Mr. A.R. Eade gave a talk and demonstration on "After Print Finishing" on June 25. Dye-retouching was demonstrated first and the lecturer handed around the prints from time to time for members to observe the effect of the process. Then the oil-reinforcement process was shown and as Mr. Eade had brought many duplicate prints of the same subject, members were able to see them being worked up to the finished picture. Once again we are indebted to Mr. Eade for a very fine lecture.

For our Open Competition on 9th July, we were fortunate in having with us Mrs. Leggett of the Photographic Society of New South Wales to act as judge. This was the first time we have had the pleasure of having a lady as judge and members enjoyed her open and very fair remarks. Mrs. Leggett later gave members a talk on the various photographic processes she had used and gave hints on the use of some simple equipment she herself had found most useful. This was deeply appreciated by all present. The awards were:
A Grade: 1, M. Goodman, 10; 2, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, 9,; 3, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, 8.
B Grade: 1, Mrs. N.E. Harrison, 8; 2, L. Hope-Caten, 6; 3, A.K. Patterson, 5.

On 23rd July, Mr. J. Mitchell gave a talk Photography in Spain, together with a showing of many beautiful color slides taken in that country. This proved unusually interesting as the slides were all 2 1/4" by 2 1/4", made with a reflex camera and their composition was a great credit to the author. His explanation of the habits of the peoples visited; of the many anecdotes; of a visit to the arena of the bull fight; and his descriptions of the old Moorish architecture; together with his many witty remarks during the talk, made the evening one of the most interesting of its kind and we sincerely thank Mr. Mitchell for his most enjoyable visit.

Last May, Mr. Henri Mallard kindly brought along his lighting equipment and treated members to a Portraiture Evening and that started the shutters clicking. Since then, other portrait evenings were held under the guidance of Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone and Mr. V.S. Joyce. Consequently many portraits of members were produced, amusing and otherwise; but despite this we feel that much was learnt from the experiment. In addition, member W. Faulkes took some Kodachromes by artificial lighting and we take this opportunity of congratulating Mr. Faulkes on these results and also on his recent success in obtaining a First (Equal) award in the A.P.-R. Kodachrome contest for his entry, Silvery Dawn. The culmination of all this was our Set Competition, “Portrait of a Member”, held August 6, and kindly judged by Mr. Henri Mallard. The awards were:
A Grade: 1 and 2, C.W. Douglas; 3, V.S. Joyce.
B Grade: 1 and 2, B.A. Adrian; 3, L. Hope-Caten.

Color enthusiasts had the opportunity once again of viewing some very splendid slides by Mr. A.W.W. Gale ARPS, who came to us on the evening of August 20. These comprised pictures taken in England and Europe in 1938 and some later ones taken in parts of Australia, including Tasmania. These slides not only served to show the excellence of the pictorial beauty captured by the author, but also served to demonstrate in no uncertain manner the progress made in color photography through the years. Remarkable, too, was the state of preservation of these slides and our grateful thanks once again go to Mr. Gale for a very fine evening.

We were pleased to welcome Mr. H.N. Jones ARPS, of the Photographic Society of New South Wales to judge our Open Competition on September 3. Following upon a very excellent commentary on the prints, his awards were:
A Grade: 1, E.B. Cohen, 8; 2, Keith Musgrave, 7; 3, B. Solomon, 6.
B Grade: 1, G. See, 6; 2, A.R. Laurie, 5; 3, O.G. Phillips, 4.

At the Fourth Annual General Meeting held on September 17, the election of officers resulted: President, F.B. Solomon; Vice-President, Keith Musgrave; Hon.Secretary, L. Hope-Caten; Assistant-Secretary, S. Scotchmer; Treasurer, A.R. Patterson; Publicity Officer, A.R. Laurie; Auditor, E.B. Cohen; Committee, Mesdames M. Wheatstone and N.E. Harrison and Messrs. E.W. The club held thirteen competitions during the year and obtained the services of nineteen lecturers, including judges and talks were given by some of the members. Our first Color Competition, held on March 5, judged by Mr. W. Dye, proved both successful and popular. An enjoyable outing was held on May 17 in the Camden District. Results of the Annual Point Score Competition were:
A Grade: 1, J.G. Jude, 82; 2, Keith Musgrave, 79; 3, S. Scotchmer,69.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
On 1st October, members and friends were entertained by Mr. Raynor B.Sc., with a talk on Central and Northern Australia illustrated with color slides. This was both educational and entertaining as the pictorial and technical quality of the Kodachrome slides was of a very high standard. Mr. Raynor’s description of the lesser-known parts of Australia was most enlightening.

An innovation on 15th October, was the judging of the Set Competition "Interior" by two club members, Messrs. Goodman and Scotchmer. The average of the judges point score resulted in first and second placings going to Miss King, a new member. This was the last set competition in which the print dimensions are restricted to half-plate size on 8" x 10" mounts. This rule has been in force since August 1952.

A talk on Table Top Photography, illustrated by prints, was given by Mr. Goodman on October 29. The aspects of lighting, perspective and background in Table Top Photography were outlined by the speaker, while hints on how to build sets from common available materials were also given. A large entry for our Set Competition "Table Top" in February 1954, is expected as a result of the interest displayed in this talk.

The Open Competition was held on 12th November, the visiting judge being Mr. H. Tolhurst. A print by H. Furnell, “The Spill”, was judged by Mr. Tolhurst to be the winning entry in A Grade and J. Keesing was successful in B Grade with his “Cover Girl". Mr. Tolhurst commended H. Furnell on the originality and technical quality of his work and remarked that, for certain subjects, the camera was unexcelled as an artistic medium. The “suitability of subject” was a point used by Mr. Tolhurst when judging the prints.

The Annual Social on 19th November, was attended by seventy visitors and thirty members, including members from other Camera Clubs and representatives of some photographic houses. A selection of 100 color slides by members was shown and Mr. J. Mitchell showed some excellent slides taken during his recent visit to Spain and various other countries of the world and depicting places and customs that the majority of the viewers would never have the opportunity of seeing. Fifty selected prints were also hung and visitors thus had an opportunity to inspect the work of members. Some of these prints had been successful entries in various competitions and exhibitions.

A lecture on developing and printing was given by member E. Douglas on November 29. The speaker stressed the point that consistent results can be achieved by always having all solutions, developer, fixer and wash water at 68-70°F.

The last meeting for 1953 was on 10th December, when a set Competition “Action”, was held; the judge was Mr. K. Mossop, a member of the club. H. Furnell was again successful with his entries of beach ballet shots, these being excellent prints of a difficult subject.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
The first activity for 1954 was a meeting on 7th January, when short talks were given by three members of the club. Mr. Cohen’s talk on the problems and methods of Glazing was much appreciated, many of the audience having experienced problems similar to those outlined by the speaker when glazing prints. Mr. Scotchmens topic was Photo-engraving and its various applications in the printing industry. The talk was illustrated with sample blocks and illustrations for both line and half tone.

The subject chosen by Mr. Laurie was Exposure and he discussed the effects of various exposure times on fine grain film and fast pan film. He also mentioned the exposure latitude of films, including single and multi-layer emulsions.

For the first open competition of 1954, held on 21st January, the visiting judge was Mr. J. Pinnock. The prints entered by H. Furnell were the best in this competition. Mr. Pinnock also demonstrated and described some of the current modern cameras available in Sydney. These ranged from single 35mm cameras to comprehensive models with interchangeable lenses, taking roll film, sheet film, film packs and plates.

On 4th February, Mr. R.G. Robertson B.A., gave a most interesting and educational talk and demonstration on Stereo Photography. His talk covered the history of stereo photography, the difference between third dimensional and stereo and many of the technical aspects associated with this branch of photography. Slides, including some drawn by hand, black-and white and Kodachrome, were used to illustrate various effects obtainable in stereo work. The speaker showed that stereo slides can be taken with a single lens camera by fitting it in a suitable holder and with ordinary twin cameras and special stereo cameras with twin lens systems.

The club’s Set Competition Table Top was held on 18th February, the judge on this occasion being Mr. L. Goodman. The number of prints entered was greater than anticipated, as this was considered a difficult subject. The judge commended the authors on the quality of the prints and it was apparent that considerable work had been spent in making and arranging the necessary figures, etc. Mr. H, Furnell was the successful competitor in A Grade; Mrs. Harrison was successful in B Grade; and Mr. Hooper in C Grade. If the number of prints entered was any indication, this was one of the most popular set subjects that we have had.

On March 4, an interesting, practical demonstration on Print Control During Enlarging was given by two senior members, J. Jude and Keith Musgrave. These two showed that prints can be improved by shading dodging, flashing or burning-in during exposure of the print when enlarging. By so varying the exposure, a far more attractive print was produced; in comparison, a straight print from the same negative was flat and lacked the brightness of the controlled print.

On 18th March, we held two competitions, an Open Competition for black-and-white and a Color Competition. The visiting judge for both competitions was Mr. Keast Burke ARPS, APSA. A screening of all entries in the color section was well received by both members and friends. Color nights have become very popular, over fifty being present. Results of the Open Competition were:
A Grade: H. Furnell.
B Grade: Miss King.
C Grade: J. Hooper.

Slides for the Color Competition were entered together by all grades. The results from ninety entries were:
1, P. Hanke; 2, E. Douglas; 3, W. Faulks; 4. (Equal), S. Roberts and G. Phillips.

It would be fine if more of our local societies would follow the excellent example set by Manly Camera Club (N.S.W.) in having trim "reminder post-cards" for guest lecturers. The reproduction herewith shows the general idea and it will be noted that the card shows the location of the club rooms rather than just the address of the Hon.Secretary.

MANLY CAMERA CLUB
The first activity for April, was a demonstration and talk by Mr. K.D. Hastings, a visiting speaker, on The Intensification and Reduction of Prints. By bleaching, intensification and re-developing the prints, the speaker showed that results could often be salvaged from the scrap bin. This instructive demonstration was much appreciated by the members and no doubt many of their prints will be given further treatment in the future.

An outing to Kurnell and the Cronulla sandhills was held on April 11, and an enjoyable day was spent by all. Members who had hopes of taking some first class photographs amongst the sandhills were handicapped by the absence of sunshine in the afternoon; but in our competitions we may see some impressions from negatives taken on this outing.

The Set Competition for April, Study in Character attracted many entries, the visiting judge on this occasion being Mr. L. Goodman. A demonstration by three club members, Mrs. Mavis Wheatstone, and Messrs. S. Scotchmer and J.J. Waterer on toning prints was held on April 29. Mrs. Wheatstone demonstrated the process of gold toning, using a gold chloride solution for both cold and warm tones. Mr. Scotchmer chose sepia toning, using sulphide solution and showed that some types of prints are more attractive if only partly bleached out so that some black remain in the finished print. Mr. Waterer demonstrated his skill with a hot hypo-alum solution. Despite the look of his ancient “brew” and fractious remarks from his audience, Mr. Waterer “cooked” some very nicely toned prints.

The open competition on 13th May was judged by Mrs. N. Leggett, a visitor from Mosman, who selected a print by K. Furnell, "Ye Olde Mylle", as the winner in A Grade and Keith Musgrave’s entry "Morning" was second. The successful prints in B Grade were both entered by H. Duit, "Forty Winks", a candid study of a weary ferry traveler, and "A Study in Stone".

On 22nd May, an afternoon outing was held at Long Reef and Narrabeen Lakes. The bleak weather, with wind and heavy cloud, was far from satisfactory for photography but we have hopes of seeing some first class prints exhibited from shots taken on this outing.

Miss O’Neill showed, on 27th May, a selection of interesting color slides, A Visit to Alice Springs, taken during her stay of eight months in Central Australia These slides were enjoyed by all, as they showed a part of Australia which the majority of the audience have not visited.

A set competition, The Royal Visit, was judged by Mr. J.W. Metcalfe. The print entered by B. Cohen Gothic, was judged as the best on the wall. Pictures of the Royal Visit were usually taken under difficulties as the crowds and traffic limited the photographer in his choice of viewpoint, with the result that fewer prints than usual were exhibited.

On 24th June, a set of black-and-white slides supplied by Messrs. Kodak Ltd, on Composition were shown and color slides by members were also exhibited.

An early morning outing to the Spit and Balmoral on 1st August, was the start of the club’s activities for the month. This was arranged for 7.30am so that keen photographers would have the advantage of the early morning sun with its soft shadows. Of course, some members preferred their soft beds and missed some splendid opportunities for picture-taking, as the day was bright and sunny. We are now awaiting the prints of harbour and waterfront scenes which should appear in our future competitions.

The Set Subject for August, Five of a Kind, was judged by Mr. L.J. Phillips, who gave a very comprehensive criticism of all the prints. Then followed a selection of members color transparencies, which always prove popular with both members and visitors, as we have many color enthusiasts in the district.

The club has been fortunate in securing the use of a larger room in the Presbyterian Hall, Raglan Street, Manly. The new premises have space for the storing of club equipment.

On 19th August, a recorded and illustrated lecture on Color Facts was presented by the courtesy of Kodak Ltd. This lecture, an introduction to the science of color was most interesting, as it embraced a subject that few have studied. With scenes and diagrams on slides the principles of color harmony, matching colors, dominant and complimentary colors were shown. The difference between warm tones, cold tones, hues, shades and tints was also explained.

This was the first occasion that a recorded lecture has been given at this club and it was much appreciated by the audience, who agreed that this was one of the best lectures that we have heard. The magnetic tape is an excellent medium for the recording of lectures such as this and no doubt more use of the tape recorder will be made in the future.

The club's Open Competition of 2nd September, attracted many entries and the visiting judge Mr. H.N. Jones ARPS, commented on the excellent showing of prints in both grades. H. Furnell’s entries gained 1st, 2nd and 3rd in “A” Grade, gaining 14 pts., 13 pts. and 12 pts. respectively, a very fine effort actually the first time that a member has had this success. In “B” Grade Mr. H. Duit’s entries were 1st and 3rd, whilst Miss S. King’s entry was 2nd. These three members have been very consistent exhibitors in our competitions, and have shown many fine prints during the past year.

The winners of our yearly point score were: H. Furnell, “A” Grade, 74 1/4 points; Miss S. King, “B” Grade, with 69 points, a fine effort by both members.

Our 5th annual meeting and election of officers for 1945-55 was held on September 16. The President, Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and Publicity Officer were reappointed whilst a new Committee was elected. In five years our membership has grown to 52 members, and now that we have larger clubrooms and better facilities, we have hopes of increasing our membership during the coming year.

After the meeting color slides of New Zealand were shown by P. Kanke and I. Tringham. These collections were very much appreciated by the audience, very few of whom have been to New Zealand.

The Set Competition for September, was “Outdoors at Night”, the judge on this evening being Mr. J. Hoey. As this is a difficult subject fewer prints were entered than usual. A print by Mr. J. Duit was selected by the judge whose comments, criticism and advice should prove helpful to members when taking photographs outdoors at night in the future.

Thursday 11th July 1957  Page 2 - Nepean Times (Penrith, NSW

A color competition was conducted by Springwood and District Camera Club at its last meeting, the title being "Person at Work"; a large number of entries were submitted by members and resulted in a win for Mr. D. Hill, with Mr. E. Oxley and Miss P. Panton being placed second and third respectively.

Mr. Keith Musgrave, president of Manly Camera Club, gave a talk on filters and their uses, with particular reference to black and white photography. The speaker gave practical demonstrations as to the effect of various colored filters on the film emulsion by means of slides and prints.

This talk was most instructive and was sufficiently simple so as to be easily absorbed by the beginner.

This was followed by a display of color transparencies by the members and a large number of these slides were the result of the recent outing conducted by the club.

The next meeting of the club will be held on Friday 19th July, at the Presbyterian Hall, Springwood, at 8pm. A black and white competition will be held, the subject being "Table Top".

Thursday 13th November 1958  Page 7 - Nepean Times (Penrith, NSW

The Springwood and District Camera Club held a meeting on 7th November when a color competition "Best of any Club Outing" was held. Twenty entries were submitted. Winners, E. Oxley, 1 and 2, E. Ockenden, 3. At conclusion of the competition a collection of slides was shown by Mr. Keith Musgrave from Manly Camera Club.

Next meeting, 21st November, when a black and white competition, "Christmas card" will be held. New members contact Miss Langhorne, Oxley's Pharmacy, Springwood.
