MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
A very successful meeting of Amateur Photographers was held last night in Mr. Smith's Board Room, Adelaide street, and it was decided to form a club under the name of "The Maryborough Camera Club". Mr. A. Hockley was voted to the chair. The members were very enthusiastic over the project, and the interest shown augurs well for the future of the Club. Mr. E.H. Warry was appointed Hon. Secretary, and Mr. F. Murray, instructor. A number of details were gone into, and it was decided to hold another meeting on Saturday night, 24th May. The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman, and to Mr. Smith for the use of the room.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
CAMERA CLUB FORMED IN MARYBOROUGH
The Keen interest in amateur photography in Maryborough has borne fruit in the formation of a Camera Club. Until an inaugural meeting was called it was not realized just how numerous were the followers of photography here. A surprisingly large number turned up at the meeting, and it was enthusiastically decided that the Maryborough Amateur Camera Club should be formed.

With the following aims and objects:
(1) To increase the individual knowledge of photography and his photographic technique.
(2) To promote fellowship and the exchange of ideas.
(3) To foster exhibitions and contests.
(4) To interest more people in photography as a hobby.
(5) To promote the advancement of photography as a science and an art.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. W. McKewen; Vice President, Mr. F. Lawrence; Secretary, Mr. P. Monsour.
A program committee was formed, comprising Messrs. W. McKewen, R. Probak and F. Lawrence.

Much useful information will be derived by beginners and old hands alike from the club. At last Friday's meeting members brought along their own points for criticism. Under the supervision of Mr. Pat McNamara both good and bad points were defined and many puzzling problems cleaned up.

It has been pointed out by the club that photographic ability or expensive cameras are by no means necessary to join the club. Raw beginners are just as welcome and will be the ones to benefit mostly. There are no restrictions as to type of camera, and members will find that the cheapest types of all will be no handicap.

Club outings are being arranged, and already the first monthly photographic competition is announced. The subject is: The War Memorial or any part of it. There will be two sections in this competition:
(1) Direct contact prints:
(2) enlargements.
Entries close on February 28th.

As a definite subject is stipulated, this competition will be an excellent opportunity for comparisons of results, and a great deal should be learnt by members by this comparison.

The new club is grateful to Messrs. Kingston and McNamara for their aid in the formation of the club. Meetings so far have been held at Mr. Kingston's Pharmacy, but beginning on Friday evening, February 14, at 8pm, fortnightly meetings will be held at the School of Arts. Anyone at all interested is welcome to attend.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
COMBINED PATRIOTIC AND SHOW CARNIVAL
A display by the Maryborough Amateur Camera Club, featuring local scenes and scenes of other localities as far away as Sydney was a most interesting one, and attracted a good deal of attention. Some of the efforts were well composed, the subjects being skilfully treated.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The inclemency of the weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of a number of young, and not so young, photographers, who assembled in the Adult Education Hall in the School of Arts on Wednesday night to consider the formation of a Camera Club in Maryborough.

The formation of such a club was urged by Mr. B.H. Austin, who expressed surprise that no such body existed in a city the size of Maryborough. He recalled that an enthusiastic club did exist over 30 years ago. A motion was carried that the Maryborough Camera Club be formed, to meet in the Adult Education Hall on the first Monday of each month.

The subject chosen for the meeting next month is a display of members photographs, it is hoped that all members, and intending members, will display as many of their best prints as possible. Whether they were taken by a cheap box camera or by the most costly modern instrument will make no difference to the amount of interest such a display will create.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr. B.H. Austin; vice-presidents, Messrs. D. Cunningham and B.H. Crew; secretary treasurer, Miss S. Campbell. It was resolved that all those present constitute the committee.

It is intended in the future to have addresses and demonstrations by the more experienced members and at least two field days a year, when members will use up numbers of films in taking the various beauty spots around the district.

All present were very keen on the movement, and it is hoped that the meeting on the first Monday of next month will be well attended and the membership considerably increased.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
KODAK TO HELP LOCAL CAMERAMEN
The April meeting of the newly formed Maryborough Camera Club was held on Monday night in the lecture room of the Adult Education Board. Several new members attended, and considerable enthusiasm was shown by all those present.

The President, Mr. B.H. Austin, mentioned the need of a set of rules and by-laws to govern the working of the club and it was resolved to go into that question at the May meeting. The president stated that he had notified Messrs. Kodak (Aust.) Pty. Ltd. of the formation of the club, and had asked for hints which might be of assistance in the running of such a society. He hoped to have a reply in time for the next meeting.

The special business of the evening was the display of photographic work by members of the club. Quite a gratifying number of prints were on show, including contact prints and enlargements, some of which were toned and others hand colored; while several color films were also on view. Generally speaking, the work, even of the beginners, was of fairly high quality. It is hoped, before long, to hold competitions among the members who, of course, will be graded according to their ability. It was felt that such competitions would do much to stimulate interest in the various photographic processes and improve the standard of the work generally.

It is the intention of the club to have a series of talks, with demonstrations where possible, on the various processes of developing, printing, enlarging, and so on. At next months meeting on May 1st, at 8pm, Mr. C.D. Webster will give the first of these addresses, his subject being "Exposure and Composition". It is hoped that all members will be present, and an invitation is issued to all amateur photographers to attend and become members of the club.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
During March, a meeting was held in Maryborough by enthusiastic photographers to consider the formation of a camera club in the district. As a result of the meeting, a motion was carried and the Maryborough Camera Club came into being.

Meetings will be held in the Adult Education Hall on the first Monday of each month.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr. B.H. Austin; Vice-Presidents, Messrs. D. Cunningham and B.H. Crew; Secretary-Treasurer, Miss S. Campbell.

It is intended in the future to have addresses and demonstrations by the more experienced members, and at least two field days a year.

BASIC RULES FOR CAMERA
The monthly meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held in the Adult Education lecture hall on Monday night, but owing, probably, to its being Labour Day, the attendance was somewhat disappointing.

It had been intended to go into the matter of rules and by-laws for the club, but in view of the small attendance it was decided that a sub-committee consisting of Mr. B.H. Austin (President), Miss S. Campbell (Secretary-treasurer) and Mr. C.D. Webster (Vice President) should draw up a set of rules and by-laws and submit them to the next general meeting on Monday, June 5th. As the amount of the annual subscription, a matter vitally affecting all members, will be fixed on that night, it is hoped that a full attendance will be recorded.

At the conclusion of the general business, a very interesting and helpful address on "Composition" was given by Mr. Webster, who evidently had given considerable thought to his subject. He laid down three general principles:
1. Be careful of the background;
2. Avoid formal arrangement;
3. Do not include too much.

In dealing with each of these basic rules, the lecturer referred to the unsuitability of background evident in many negatives produced by snapshooters, instancing particularly the spotty background and the many instances in which line posts and clothes props are made to appear as it growing out of a subject's head. Mr. Webster, who was handicapped by the fact that the epidiascope belonging to the Adult Education Centre was not available at the time, illustrated several of the points made in his lecture by reproductions of the work of prominent pictorial photographers as well as some fine enlargements produced by himself.

It was resolved that the subject for the June meeting would be "Exposure" a matter that caused many beginners to fall by the wayside. In all likelihood a club outing will be held in the near future, so camera enthusiasts are advised to get their cameras into good order for that occasion.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held in the Adult Education lecture hall on Monday night last, there being a fair attendance of members. The president, Mr. B.H. Austin, occupied the chair, and two new members were admitted. The report of the sub-committee elected to draw up the constitution and by-laws was submitted. and their recommendations were adopted after one or two minor amendments had been made. The subscription was fixed at ten shillings per annum, and the first subscription will cover the period ending, June 30th, 1951.

It was decided to hold a club outing at Baddow on Sunday 13th June, and members are asked to make careful note of the date. Anyone interested in photography is invited to attend. Members will meet at Ululah at the corner just past the golf links at 9am. The arrangements for the outing are in the hands of the Hon.Secretary, Miss S. Campbell. It is hoped that many good pictures will be taken and prints submitted for inspection and discussion at the July meeting of the club. It is also hoped that the Board of Adult Education epidiascope will be available for the display of prints. Morning tea will take the form of a basket picnic.

At the conclusion of the ordinary business, a very interesting and informative address on the subject of "Exposure" was given by Mr. C.D. Webster, to whom a unanimous vote of thanks was accorded at the end of the talk. Mr. Webster answered several questions on the subject. It is hoped that a number of such addresses will be given during the year by the more experienced members, and all young and aspiring photographers are advised to join up and get the benefits offered by the club.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
A meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held at the Adult Education Centre last Monday night, when members took part in an inspection and discussion of prints taken on the Baddow outing. The epidaioscope was available and members derived a great deal of satisfaction from seeing their prints enlarged upon a screen. The general opinion was that the Baddow outing had been a great success from the photographic as well as the social point of view.

A number of results were excellent, and members are now inspired to hold a public exhibition of prints in the future. The meeting also discussed the idea of holding a table-top night in the home of one of the members. Tables and lighting will be arranged beforehand and each member will bring along a small collection of oddments — ornaments, toys, flowers etc, — which he will arrange and photograph as he thinks most effective

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting was held last Monday 5th June, when there was a fair attendance of members in spite of adverse weather conditions. The President, Mr. B.H. Austin, occupied the chair, and two new members were admitted.

A Constitution and By-Laws were adopted, modeled on suggestions kindly supplied by Kodak (Aust.), Brisbane, and the annual subscription was fixed at ten shillings.

It was decided that on Saturday morning, June 18th, a club outing would be held at the “Old Township”. As the spot selected is of both historic and scenic interest, it is expected that a number of interesting pictures will be obtained, prints of which are to be on display at the July meeting of the club.

At the conclusion of the general business, a very interesting and informative address on the subject of “Exposure” was given by Mr. C.D. Webster, to whom, at the end of the talk, a unanimous and hearty vote of thanks was accorded.

The first outing of the Club was held at the “Old Township” on Sunday morning, 18th June, when a fair attendance of members was present. The spot, besides being decidedly “photogenic”, is also of historic interest, being the site of the first settlement at Maryborough; and many shots were taken of Baddow House, the old home of the Aldridge family, the first white settlers there. Club members were impressed with the natural beauty of the locality, and soon shutters were clicking merrily. It is intended that the results of the outing shall be on display at the July meeting of the Club, and later on there will probably be a public exhibition of enlargements of the best photographs of the day.

Those who could not attend the outing missed an excellent opportunity of securing good photographs and, at the same time, participating in a most enjoyable social gathering. It is hoped that several similar outings will be held during the year, and that all members will take the opportunity of exchanging opinions with, and observing the technique of others.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held in the Adult Education Hall on Monday night. The President, Mr. B.H. Austin, was in the chair.

The most interesting item in general business was a letter from the secretary of the Barmera Show Society, South Australia, enclosing a schedule of competitive events for amateur photographers at their annual show in October. He expressed the hope that Maryborough Camera Club members would send in a large number of entries.

Members were greatly interested and compared the prizes offered with those given by the P. and A. Society here. For one item the first prize is £10 10/-, and there are quite a number of one and two guinea prizes.

Several members expressed their intentions of entering in one or more sections.

The special business of the evening proved to be most interesting and instructive, especially to the less advanced members. Mr. D. Cunningham gave a demonstration of sepia toning, using the ferricyanide and sulphide process.

Mr. C.D. Webster followed with a demonstration of intensification of a thin negative by mercuric chloride and ammonia process. The result, to the younger members, was thought almost miraculous.

Amateur photographers who have not yet joined the club do not realize what they are missing in not being present at these meetings.

It was resolved that, in addition to the regular meeting on the first Monday of the month that practical work should be undertaken by the members themselves on another night each month. It is intended to meet at Mr. Cunningham's residence in Meredith-street on Friday 25th August, at 7.30pm.

Each member will be at liberty to take whatever "props" he wishes to use in producing his table-top master-piece. The results will be displayed at the next ordinary meeting on September 4th.

At the August meeting members were treated to two extremely interesting demonstrations, “Sepia Toning”, by Mr. D. Cunningham, and “Intensification”, by Mr. G.D. Webster. Both demonstrators were warmly thanked by the President (Mr. B.H. Austin), and were also subjected to a barrage of questioning, which clearly showed the interest felt by the audience.

A prize schedule for the photographic section of the Barmera Show Society’s annual exhibition was received, and several of the more advanced workers express their intention of competing.

It has been decided that, in between the usual monthly meetings, there should also be an extra meeting each month, to be held at the homes of various club members. Accordingly, the next meeting will feature an attempt at Table-top Photography at the home of Mr. D. Cunningham on Friday night, August 25th. As this venture will be the first of its kind for most members, great interest is in evidence, and good attendances are expected.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
PUTS THEORY INTO EFFECT
At the last meeting members of the Maryborough Camera Club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Cunningham to make what was to most of them, their first attempt at table-top photography.

A very pleasant and instructive time was spent and the general feeling was that both photographically and socially it was a great success. Various pictures were taken with the aid of photoflood lights lent by Mr. Cunningham, and it was arranged that prints should be on display at the following meeting.

Supper was provided by Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. B.H. Austin and the lady members of the club, and before the gathering dispersed a flashlight picture of it was taken by Mr. Cunningham.

The monthly meeting of the club was held in the Adult Education lecture hall on Monday night. Various tabletop pictures taken by members were on display, and some very creditable results had been achieved. Several suggestions were made for future meetings and it was finally decided:
(1) To hold an Outing at Copenhagen Bend on Saturday afternoon, resultant photos to be shown at the October meeting of the club; and
(2) At the October meeting the president, Mr. B.H. Austin, would tell the members of his experiences in his early efforts at photography nearly 50 years ago, and of the gradual changes that have occurred since then.

In connection with the outing on Saturday afternoon it was decided that members should meet at the spot where motor cycle hill climbs are held, by 2pm, that afternoon tea would be provided by the members at about 3.30pm, and that the photographic results should be displayed at the October meeting.

On Friday night, August 25th, members met at the home of Vice-President Mr. D. Cunningham, to try their hand at table-top photography. Photo Floods were kindly lent by Mr. Cunningham, and many pictures were made. A most enjoyable and instructive evening was had by all.

At the regular monthly meeting on September 4th, the various “Table-Tops” taken by the members were on display, some very creditable results being achieved.

The outing to Copenhagen Bend was held on September 9th. The weather was almost perfect, with a nice cloudy sky to cheer the hearts of the band of enthusiasts who turned out. Films were used freely, and many good prints are anticipated at our next meeting.

Friday 27th October 1950  Page 7 - Maryborough Chronicle (Queensland)

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The Maryborough Camera Club, though not large in numbers, is decidedly enthusiastic and turned out in force on September 9th for their monthly outing at Copenhagen Bend.

The weather was just about perfect for photographers, and the clouds were good. Everything contributed to the making of perfect pictures — the dream of every serious amateur. The resulting prints and enlargements were on display at the October meeting of the club at the Adult Education Hall on October 2nd, when the chair was occupied by the vice president, Mr. Don Cunningham. An apology was received for the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. B. Austin. As anticipated, some very good photographs were shown.

At this meeting, arrangements were made for an outing at Deep Rock quarry on Saturday afternoon, 14th October, and in due course the outing took place. Owing, however, to the very unpleasant weather, conditions were not suitable for photography at the quarry, so the members went a few miles further along the Gayndah-road, where the billy was boiled modern style — on a primes stove and a few of the most enthusiastic members brought their cameras into action.

The next monthly meeting of the Camera Club will be held on 6th November at the home of the president, who has been asked to give a talk on photography as it was when he acquired his first camera (in 1902), and to tell some of his experiences during the years that have elapsed since then. The talk will be quite informal and Mr. and Mrs. Austin will be very pleased to welcome as many members as can possibly come along, including their wives and children too small to be left at home.

Club members (from beginners to advanced workers) are reminded that they have been asked to prepare a display of half-a-dozen of their best photographs (any size) for public exhibition, either late in November or early in December.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
First a humble apology for the emission of an item at the October meeting, when Mr. J. Kuskie gave a very interesting talk on lenses. This was much appreciated by members, who showed that appreciation by the customary vote of thanks.

The November meeting was held at the residence of the president, Mr. B.H. Austin. The special business was a talk. by the president on his photographic experiences over a considerable number of years. He mentioned having bought his first camera, a quarter-plate magazine box camera, in 1902. He was able to show one of his early efforts with this veteran — a photograph of Bluff Rock, near Tenterfield, which compared very favorably with one taken from almost the same spot with a Kodak 26 years later.

A resume of the discovery and of the early days of photography followed on through the years before the advent of Kodak Ltd., when the photographic businesses in Brisbane were Baker and Rouse and Harringtons Ltd.

Samples of photographs taken by the Daguerrotype process, and prints on P.O.P. albumenised paper, and later on gas-light and bromide papers, were shown, as well as a couple of negatives on Kodoid films — the forerunners of the present cut films.

Some old pictures of Maryborough and groups taken many years ago were also displayed. The quaint fashions worn by the ladies in the groups, caused interest and amusement.

At the conclusion of the address the speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A delicious supper, supplied by the ladies, brought a very pleasant evening to a close.

In the course of the meeting it was decided to hold another outing on Saturday afternoon, this time at the Island Plantation. Members are asked to meet at the old aerodrome corner at 2pm.

Saturday 25th November 1950  Page 6 - Maryborough Chronicle (Queensland)

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The projected outing took place on Saturday afternoon in ideal weather, and attracted the usual body of enthusiasts. The scene of operations was the Island Plantation, the lighting was kind, and the clouds were very attractive.

We confidently hope to be able to display quite a number of worth-while prints and enlargements at our December meeting and all are eagerly looking forward to comparing results with each other. Sunshades and filters were freely used, the latter ranging from light yellow to orange and even red. Ideas were freely exchanged, and the most delightful spirit of helpful camaraderie was displayed. As usual, a most delicious afternoon tea was supplied by the ladies and greatly appreciated by everyone present.

Since the meeting reported last week a letter has been received from the Brisbane Camera Circle suggesting an exchange of photographs for exhibition, and a reply is being sent asking for a display from the circle for our December meeting, pointing out that we are arranging for a display of our own prints during January and will send a selection of photographs from this display in return.

Once more we suggest that it would be in the interest of all amateur photographers who aim at being more than mere snapshottists to join the Camera Club and participate in all its activities. If they feel, as one young man told the writer of these notes, that they have nothing to gain by membership, we should be very glad to receive the benefit of their experience. We all have lots to learn, and the larger our membership the more attractive we can make our activities.

Saturday 9th December 1950  Page 6 - Maryborough Chronicle (Queensland)

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
In spite of very unpleasant weather, there was almost a full attendance at the December meeting of the club on Monday last, when regret was expressed at the illness of the Hon.Secretary, Miss Sonia Campbell. The meeting was in charge of the president, Mr. B.H. Austin, and the principal business dealt with concerned the inauguration of a "Print of the Month" contest.

After the idea had been explained, it was decided to adopt the scheme, and the first display of entries will be held at the January meeting of the club. Members may enter in either or both of two classes, to be known as Class A and Class B.

In Class A, entries must be mounted enlargements not smaller than 6in. by 4in., and must be entirely the work of the competitor. They may be toned, but not hand colored. Points will be allotted, and winning prints will remain the property of the exhibitor, but must be available for the Club Display in February.

In Class B, entries may be contact prints or small enlargements not larger than 5in. by 4in., to cater for users of miniature cameras. Entries in this class must have been taken by the competitor, but trade finishing will be allowed though not encouraged. Other conditions are the same as for class A entries. Judging, for the first few months, at least, will be by vote of the members present.

It appears certain that considerable interest will be taken in the contest, which will be open to members of the club, including any who join in time to enter prints for the competition.

A collection of 25 prize winners in A.P.R. competition was received from the Editor of the Australasian Photo Review for inspection by the members of the club. This gesture was greatly appreciated by the members, who should benefit considerably by the study of the best work of enthusiastic amateur photographers from other, and in most instances older clubs. Non-members of the club certainly missed a treat. It is hoped to have, early in the New Year, a further collection of prints from the Brisbane Camera Circle for display, possibly at the January meeting.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
Unfortunately no report was submitted on the October meeting, when the chief item of interest was an instructive talk on “Lenses” by Mr. J. Kuskie. A hearty vote of thanks gave evidence of the appreciation of the audience.

The usual monthly outing was held on Saturday 14th October, at Deep Rock Quarry. As often occurs, the weather was not suitable for photography, and very few exposures were made.

The November meeting was held at the residence of the President, Mr. B.H. Austin. The special business of the evening was a talk by the President on his photographic experiences over a period of forty-eight years. He mentioned having taken up photography as a hobby in 1902, when what is now Kodak Ltd. was Baker and Rouse, and hypo was 4d. per pound. The talk was illustrated by numbers of old-time photographs, including several “Kodoid” film negatives, the forerunners of the modern sheet film.

The Island Plantation outing was held as arranged, the weather co-operating splendidly. Our club is small in numbers, but there was practically a lull muster, and many exposures were made. A feature of these occasions is the splendid spirit of comradeship which prevails, adding tremendously to the value of the outings.

We hope to introduce very shortly a “Print of the Month” contest, and also to hold a public display of the members work in January, a local business man having generously offered the use of one of his windows for the purpose.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The December meeting was a most interesting one and attracted practically a full attendance in spite of the inclemency of the weather.

It was decided to introduce a “Print of the Month” contest to commence in January, and it seems certain that the idea will be taken up enthusiastically by the members. This contest will be held monthly, and the entries will be judged by the vote of those present on the night of each regular meeting.

It was also decided to hold a public display of prints in February, a shop window being generously offered for the purpose by a local business man, to whom the Club is sincerely grateful.

The main interest of the meeting was the display of twenty-five splendid enlargements, prizewinners in various A.P.-R. competitions, kindly lent for the occasion by Kodak Ltd. The collection was a most comprehensive one, and was greatly admired by the Club members who feel that they have learned much to help them in their own photographic work.

We hope, in the near future, to arrange an exchange of prints with the Brisbane Camera Group, and expect to add considerably to our photographic knowledge by the exchange.

Friday 9th February 1951  Page 6 - Maryborough Chronicle (Queensland)

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The Maryborough Camera Club held its first meeting this year on Monday night in Adult Education lecture hall.

There was a good attendance, and the chair was occupied by the President, Mr. B.H. Austin, who welcomed the members and referred regretfully to the departure from Maryborough of vice-president, Mr. Don Cunningham. He also expressed the pleasure of all present at the return to health of the Hon. Secretary, Miss Sonia Campbell.

It was resolved that the display of work by members of the club should be held early in March, provided that a suitable window could be obtained for the purpose. It was also derided that an outing should beheld on Saturday week, fuller details of which would be announced in due course.

A full attendance is confidently expected at the March meeting, when the principal business will be the judging of the prints submitted for public display by members of the club. An effort is to be made to secure a thoroughly competent artist photographer to be judge.

COMPETITION
Monday's meeting saw the inauguration of the print of the month competition, a total of nine enlargements being submitted. All showed a high standard of excellence. The entries were judged by a secret ballot among the members present, the first place being awarded to "Fantasy", a fine study of tree branches photographed against the light. It was the work of Mr. C.D. Webster. Second place was taken by an excellent warm-toned study of an old shed and some trees at Baddow. This, which unfortunately bore no title, was the work of Mr. P. Phillips. Third place was gained by Mr. M. Kuskie's picture, "Morning Stillness", a very interesting view of the Brisbane River showing the Grey-street bridge framed by part of Victoria bridge.

Other entries were a tree study at the Island Plantation by Miss Alison Murray and Miss Sonia Campbell; "Quiet Cove", a seaside view by Mr. J. Kuskie; "Australian Landscape", by Mr. C.D. Webster; and two studies by Mr. B.H. Austin — "Fast Falls the Eventide" and "Upward Leads the Pathway". Those who failed to secure the leading places will be on their mettle on future occasions, and are determined to defeat the winners of this month's competition.

Saturday 10th March 1951  Page 3 - Maryborough Chronicle (Queensland)

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
At the last meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club arrangements were made for the long-awaited public display of photographs taken by members.

Selection of the best submitted will be on show in one of Mr. Alan Strong's windows in Adelaide-street from Saturday afternoon for one week, and should attract much interest among lovers of artistic photography. Mr. Strong's action in placing his window at the disposal of the club is greatly appreciated.

After the display, the prints will be moved to the vestibule of the School of Arts, where the secretary, Mr. T.J. Strong, has granted the use of some of the display cases. It is hoped that a large section of the public, especially amateur photographers, will inspect the display.

A letter was received from the editor of the Australasian Photo-Review, conveying his good wishes for the success of the club. The president stated that he had received a number of official entry forms for the A.P.-R. contests.

The "print of the month" competition was judged by Mr. W.E. Parry, a local professional photographer. After stating that the quality of the work was decidedly good, and that he had had considerable difficulty in arriving at a decision, Mr. Parry announced the results as follows: "Solitude" by R. English 1, "Before the Storm" by R. English 2, "Our Wealth" by P. Phillips 3. Mr. Parry pointed out the good points and faults of the Winning prints in considerable detail, and those of the less fortunate entries, in almost as great detail.

Such constructive criticism should result in a marked improvement in the work submitted in future competitions. Mr. Parry has accepted the position of honorary judge, and it is requested that in future negatives should be available, so that his comments and advice may be even more helpful. The president, supported by Mr. Phillips expressed the club's gratitude to Mr. Parry, who suitably responded.

The president stated that Mr. English, winner of the first two places, was at present in hospital, and would probably be much cheered to hear of his success. Great interest was displayed in a number of excellent stereoscopic views and transparencies taken by Mr. Parry. Probably only the high cost of stereo cameras and viewers will keep some of the members from trying their hands at such an interesting branch of photography.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
FINE DISPLAY OF WORK BY AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHERS
A remarkably fine display of photographs, the work of members of the Maryborough Camera Club, at present on view in Mr. Alan Strong's Adelaide-street window, is a credit to the artists in every detail.

Landscapes, seascapes, portraiture and a very fine animal study show a sensitive approach to composition, a keen appreciation of tone values, and a selective sense for subject matter.

Gone are the exaggerated values from which most amateur photographs suffered when filters first came into popular use. The clouds and the sky tones in the seascapes and landscapes are perfect, and the filter has also been used to good effect in one or two other studies.

From every angle the subject which, on paper, would appear to have least interest, by comparison, is a basket from which eggs are spilling. This is a sample of technical perfection.

It is a pity that the enthusiasts have not appended their names to their exhibits, because this is work of which anyone could feel intensely proud.

A larger display would unquestionably raise funds for the club if a reasonable charge were made.

The club meets once a month in the Adult Education lecture room. The president is Mr. B.H. Austin, a well-known amateur photographer of many years' standing, and intending members can obtain information from Miss Campbell, of Campbell's studio.

The present exhibition is under the aegis of the Adult Education organization.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
Our first meeting this year was held on Monday night, February 5th, when there was practically a full attendance. The President welcomed the members, and referred with regret to the departure from Maryborough of Vice-President Don Cunningham. He also expressed the pleasure of all the members at the return to health of the Hon. Secretary, Miss Sonia Campbell.

This meeting saw the commencement of the “Print of the Month” competition, a total of nine prints being submitted. Most of these were 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" or 8" x 10" enlargements, and showed a very commendable degree of excellence. The entries were judged by secret ballot among the members present, first place being secured by Mr. G.D. Webster with “Fantasy”, a fine study of tree branches taken against the light. Mr. P. Phillips took second place with an excellent warm-toned print of an old shed and several trees. Unfortunately, the print was untitled. “Morning Stillness”, a very interesting view of the Brisbane River showing Grey Street Bridge framed by part of the Victoria Bridge, and pictured by Mr. M. Kuskie, was awarded third place.

Another of the popular club outings was held on Saturday afternoon, February 17th, this time at a very “photogenic” spot on the Mary River about six miles from town. The sky was overcast, with resultant flat lighting, but many exposures were made in the hope of obtaining that ever-elusive “masterpiece”.

The main business on 5th March was the “Print of the Month” competition, for which a dozen entries were received. These were judged by Mr. W.G. Parry, well-known local professional photographer, who kindly accepted the position of judge throughout the competition. After stating that the quality of the work was very good and the standard remarkably uniform, Mr. Parry gave pride of place to “Solitude”, by Mr. R. English, who also gained second place with “Before the Storm”. Third place was gained by a study of sheep, the work of Mr. P. Phillips.

The President, Mr. B.H. Austin, supported by Mr. P. Phillips, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Parry, who briefly replied.

Great interest was taken in a number of excellent stereoscopic views and transparencies made by Mr. Parry, who also provided three stereoscopes for the use of members for the evening. Though stereoscopy is a revival of an old-time branch of photography, most of the members made its acquaintance for the first time, and were delighted with the realistic appearance of the views.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
A successful meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held in the Adult Education Centre recently.

Members spent an interesting evening reviewing the club prints which had been on display in Mr. Alan Strong's window for two weeks.

Members were satisfied with the interest shown by the general public of Maryborough in the display and felt that their work was appreciated.

A club outing was held on Sunday afternoon, 22nd April. Members met at the Tinana Hall and proceeded to a photogenic spot along the Nerada-road. Members were able to find numerous subjects of photographic interest and an enjoyable and profitable afternoon was spent.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held on Monday, June 4th, in the Adult Education lecture room, and was presided over by Mr. B.H. Austin, who had missed a couple of meetings owing to absence from town.

He expressed great pleasure in the increased membership and attendance. The need for the introduction of new members and new ideas was becoming felt in the club, he said.

It has been considered that too much time was taken up with business matters at the meetings, and not enough was left for competitions, talks, demonstrations and similar activities. At the annual meeting in July, a sub-committee is to be elected to conduct as much of the business of the club as possible, and to draw up programs for the regular meeting nights and arrange outings, competitions, etc.

POPULAR OUTINGS
Another of the club's popular outings has been arranged to take place on the 24th of the month. This time the center of interest will again be the River-road, Tinana, which members can reach by proceeding along the Lindah-road right to its end, and turning to the right into the River-road.

All are requested to meet at the rendezvous as near to 9am as possible. They can be assured of some highly suitable spots for photography which will help them to forget for a time the rising costs of films and other materials.

The president reminded members that nominations for the various positions in the club must be in his or the Hon.Secretary's hands prior to the commencement of the annual meeting. They must be in writing and must bear the signatures of the proposer and seconder, and also of the nominee stating his willingness to accept the position.

The "Print of the Month" competition, as usual, brought out some good entries, this time nine of them. These were judged by popular vote, and the results were as follows: 1st, "Declining Day", by Mr. J. Kuskie; 2nd, "Telarah", by Mr. C.D. Webster; and 3rd, a lightly-toned study of pumpkin leaves and flowers, by one of the new members, Mr. W.S. McKewen.

OBITUARY

MR. BERNARD H. AUSTIN

Late on Monday afternoon death claimed a well-known Maryborough man, Mr. Bernard H. Austin, after a long illness, which he bore with great fortitude and philosophic calm. The late Mr. Austin gave a life time of service to the Education Department, with a break of a few years when he was country representative, many years ago, for a metropolitan newspaper. Born on 13th August 1884, at Maryborough, he was educated at Mrs. Barnett's private school, and later at the Christian Brothers and the Bundaberg South State School, where he won a State scholarship that gave him entry to the Maryborough Boys' Grammar School (now the State High). He was appointed to the teaching staff of the Central Boys State School on 25th June 1900. He remained at the Central for about 12 years, and later taught at the Maryborough West (Newtown), and at many country centres, where he gained a great love for country life and always spoke in deep appreciation of country people and country hospitality. The schools where he taught comprised Upper Wonga, Home Creek, Goondiwindi, Mt. Marshall, St. Lawrence, Montville, Thabeban and, finally, Torquay, where he retired on reaching his 65th birthday, on 13th August 1949. Bernie, as he was popularly known to his many close friends, took a keen interest in many sports, including foot-running as a member of the old Harriers' Club, cycling, tennis, golf, and in latter years, bowls, including membership of the Maryborough Bowling Club and foundation membership of the Hervey Bay Club. One of his best known hobbies was amateur photography, at which he was recognized as an expert. Much of his work touched a very high standard and he was always ready to impart his knowledge to younger men who showed a desire to learn. He played a prominent part in forming the Maryborough Camera Club as part of the Adult Education movement. He closely identified himself with the club's activities and with the Adult Education Centre. He was first president of the Pialba branch, where he conducted classes in leather work as well as at the Maryborough center itself.

In his younger days, when stationed at Maryborough, the late Mr. Austin was a keen worker for St. Paul's Church of England. He was a Sunday School teacher and also Superintendent for many years, as well as being a lay reader, mainly at St. Thomas's Church, Newtown, and at St. John's, Pialba. A keen lover of music, he spent many happy hours with the former Liedertafel Choir and the Philharmonic Society. For over 40 years he was a member of the Star of the East Masonic Lodge, and with a knowledge of first-aid, he became an honorary ambulance man in each center where he taught.

Many city and district-wide friends will treasure his memory. They extend sincere sympathy to his bereaved widow, Mrs. B.H. Austin, of 30 North-street, Maryborough, and two daughters: Doris (Mrs. H.J. Highfield, Maryborough), and Molly (Mrs. L.L. McPherson, Wavell Heights, Brisbane). The late Mr. Austin is also survived by one brother, Mr. Geoffrey Austin, Maryborough and three grandchildren.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held on Monday 12th November, in the Adult Education Centre.

On Tuesday night, November 20th, an outing was held to photograph buildings in the town with the available night lighting. Some interesting experiments were tried on the Granville and Lamington bridges. The results of this outing will be discussed at the meeting on December 3rd. For this meeting members have also arranged a showing of Kodachrome color transparencies.

An all-day outing to Gatakers Bay has been planned for Sunday, December 2nd. Members will leave Maryborough by car at 9am and will meet for an early picnic lunch by the beach at the Gables headland, Pt. Vernon. The afternoon will be spent taking pictures.

Any person interested in joining the Camera Club should contact the hon. secretary, Miss Sonia Campbell, c/- Adult Education Centre.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
CAMERA CLUB EXHIBITION
The Maryborough Camera Club exhibition of prints will be displayed by courtesy of G. Horsburgh and Co. Pty. Ltd., in their center window from Friday, March 21st, for two weeks.

This display has been enthusiastically prepared by members to represent the work done by the club during the year. Most exhibits are the results of shots taken on club field days, night outings or of shots taken for entries in club competitions. The club now holds two competitions each month - one ordinary and one special. Subjects for both competitions have been set till the end of the year.

Members now have at their disposal a library of photographic journals left to the club by its first president, the late Mr. B.H. Austin. In this collection are Australian Photographic Reviews dating from 1930, and a series of British and American photographic almanacs. These books are proving of great interest to members.

On March 25th, Kodak Ltd. are sending their representative, Mr. J. White, to talk to members on some subject of interest. He is bringing with him a movie film, "Functional Photography". This social evening will take place at the Adult Education Centre at 8pm. The film will show for 30 minutes. Non members who are interested will be made welcome.

The next meeting of the Camera Club will be held in the Adult Education Centre on Monday, April 7th, at 8pm. For information concerning the Club contact the honorary secretary, Miss Sonia Campbell, c/- the Adult Education Centre.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS SHOW HIGH STANDARD
A very fine collection of photographic prints, the work of members of the Maryborough Camera Club, is on display in Messrs. Horsburghs center window.

Since the prints were placed in the window yesterday morning many people have viewed them, and many complimentary remarks have been addressed to the persons responsible and to club officials.

This selection of the work of club members is of a uniformly high standard, and the display is one which would not disgrace any exhibition of prints.

All the work was done in Maryborough by club members in their homes, and each print shows a striving for perfection. There are child studies, still life, landscapes and seascapes, night scenes and table top miniature work.

Each print shows artistry in the selection of scene, in the composition of the subject matter and in effective cutting and mounting. In addition, a word must be said for the technical excellence of the reproduction and enlarging.

The prints, which are in black and white, in the main, with several in sepia, are by Miss Sonia Campbell and Miss Alison Murray and Mr. P. Groom, Mr. M. Kuskie, Mr. J. Kuskie, Mr. A.F. Kearney, Mr. W. McKewen and Mr. F. Lawrence.

These artists, for artists they are in their medium, are to be complimented on their showing. The standard of the work leads one to hope that before long the club will conduct a large-scale exhibition of prints in a hall where the excellence of their work may be properly appreciated.

(Compiled from the files of the Maryborough Chronicle for the week ended May 17, 1902).
A very successful meeting of amateur photographers was held on Wednesday night in Mr. Smith's board room, Adelaide-street. It was decided to form a club under the name of the Maryborough Camera Club. Mr. A. Hockley was voted to the chair. Mr. E.H. Warry was elected hon. secretary and Mr. F. Murray instructor.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
Emphasizing the present-day tendency towards rising costs, the resigning president of the Maryborough Players, Mr. V. Crew, told Thursday night's annual meeting of the society that one of two things would have to be done to cope with the situation. He said that the Players would either be compelled to reduce costs on future productions, or else a greater subscribing membership would have to be sought.

On the question of play publicity, Mrs. Kuskie told the meeting that she thought the society was asking too much of Maryborough Camera Club members in expecting them to provide free of charge photographic material which undoubtedly had helped publicize various productions in the past. Mrs. Dempster stated the society had requested the Camera Club to submit accounts in this regard for the past two plays, but no accounts had yet been received. Mr. Herbert moved, seconded by Mr. W. Robertson that the matter be left in the hands of the management committee to examine the position.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The annual meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club was held recently in the Adult Education Hall.

Despite the small membership of the club the year was most successful. Many outings, day and night, were held, and apart from photography, were enjoyable socially. Two interesting theatre evenings were held in co-operation with the Maryborough Players. At three of the meetings the members were shown a series of color slides on the Adult Education Board's magnificent slide projector. These pictures were taken locally and elsewhere by members of the club and by visitors, and the color rendering of quite a number of slides left nothing to be desired.

A representative from Kodak, Mr. Geddes, visited the club, gave a detailed lecture on color work, and stayed far into the night discussing problems with the members.

The monthly print competition continues, and the last one, was won by Mr. P. Groom.

EXHIBITION OF PRINTS
Mr. T. Strong, himself a photographer of wide experience, has kindly consented to show a set of prints each month in the School of Arts lobby.

The annual exhibition of prints attracted much interest when on view in Horsburgh's window, and the club is grateful to this firm for the use of its well-lit central window. The prints were sent to the Kingaroy Camera Club for display, and are now on the way to England.

The club was unfortunate to lose, by death, its LIFE MEMBER and FIRST PRESIDENT, Mr. Bernard Austin. It was his enthusiasm and wise guidance which fostered the formation and growth of the club. The membership was further seriously depleted when the president, Mr. C. Webster, moved temporarily to Brisbane, and the secretary, Miss Sonia Campbell, went to Sydney for several months.

The officers elected were: President, Mr. P. Groom; vice-presidents, Mr. F. Lawrence and Mr. J. Kuskie; Secretary-Treasurer, Mr. A. Kearney.

Considerable discussion has taken place on how to attract more of the hundreds of Maryborough camera owners to the club. It is proposed to cater for box-camera owners and beginners generally by mutual aid and demonstrations, thus promoting the objects of the club which are to create an interest in picture taking and to spread the knowledge of photography.

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
At a recent meeting of the Maryborough Camera Club members were treated to a display of prize-winning prints from the competitions of the "Australian Photo Review".

The Kodak firm has prepared a few series of these prints, and with the commendable idea of fostering pictorial photography generously circulates them among the camera clubs throughout Australia.

Members were soon absorbed in discussing the points of appeal and the strong and weak features of the prints. A good picture, besides pleasing the eye, appeals to the emotions. In some pictures it was found that the emotional appeal came through the title, indeed, some powerful pictures have been made to suit a preselected title.

In others the subject matter itself provided the spark to the imagination; the spontaneous laughter of the young child was the best example of this. It was instructive to study the portraits, and find out how the use of expression, right viewpoint of the camera, and the play of light and shade can lift a snapshot to a work of art. By clever use of light and shade in the right amount and in the right place, the photographers varied their landscapes from bold striking pictures where light was concentrated for emphasis, to soothing shade scenes where the light was diffused for soft effects and delicate tones.

The next outing is to be in the town area, where it is thought that many interesting subjects will be found.

In the landscape competition Mr. P. Groom won with "In the Clouds", followed by "Slip-rail Fence" and "Willows", by Mr. A. Kearney. In the "Men at Work" competition, P. Groom won with "Industry" and "Mending the Nets", followed by "Up Aloft" by A. Kearney. The pattern and texture competition was won by J. Kuskie with "Angles".

MARYBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB
The new year has brought to the Maryborough Camera Club an increase in membership and a pleasing renewal of activities.

During the holiday period the president of the Brisbane Camera Club, Mr. Fred Masters, was holidaying at the Bay. When he found time to spare from fishing and making Kodachrome color transparencies he called on as many of our members as he could contact. Much interesting discussion and exchange of ideas ensued. One plan was for our members to send a selection of prints every month to the three Brisbane judges, artists and photographers of high standing and international experience, for comments and suggestions. Mr. Doug. Smart of the Brisbane Club, and who was in Maryborough for a few weeks, also joined in the activities of our club and elaborated the print criticism idea. Our members are fortunate to be able to avail themselves of such expert guidance, and we hope more members will join our small circle to benefit from it.

Visits from such people as Mr. and Mrs. Masters and Mr. Smart bring home the fact that besides a gain in material knowledge, membership of such clubs brings about a strong bond of friendship and understanding with people far and wide.

COLOUR SLIDES
Mr. Doug Smart recently treated our members to an exhibition of color slides from his large collection. He gave us the benefit of his wide experience in color work with many tips and hints. It was very enlightening to follow the results of several experiments in exposure by which he showed the difference caused by as little as half a stop.

PRICE PROGRAM
In fulfillment of an offer to screen a program of his movie films to the club, Mr. Bill Yarker had us invade his home one night recently. The films were most interesting, and besides covering holidays as far afield as Melbourne, no local event of importance for some years missed being recorded. Line cameras are readily forthcoming in the Yarker household, and as the whole family is photographic minded, we went from floods to motor-bike racing, from sporting march-pasts to air pageants, from scout activities to those homely doings treasured in memory with the years. The technically inclined noted the striking difference in contrast of different types of film; the slower fine-grain films gave a picture of high contrast and sparkle, while the fast films produced a soft, gray effect with delicate tones in the shadows. Several of the films were in color, and fine pictorial results were obtained. Mrs. Yarker found elbow room enough to serve refreshments, and our gratitude goes to Mr. and Mrs. Yarker for an instructive and enjoyable evening.

Last Sunday was hardly a suitable time to study the play of light and shade, so we had to abandon our outing to Yengarie. On our program for next month is included another showing of color slides, and we hope to see a large attendance of club members and others who are interested.
