INTERCLUB COMPETITION 2011 - 2012
The current 2011-12 round of Photographic Society of America Interclub competitions has been completed and our Club has done extremely well, placing 5th out of 26 clubs overall in Group D. There is a good chance we will move up to Group C for the next round which starts in October 2012.

Congratulations to all members who had images entered over the course of the 4 competitions: Anne O‘Connor, Astrid Claase, Athalie Taylor, Felix Staub, John Shepherd, Kai Johnson, Phillipa Alexander, Richard Claase, Rod Oliver, Ruth Timperon and Trevor Bunyard.

Highlights of the competition include: Athalie Taylor, "Mandarin Duck" image receiving 15/15 points in the April competition. Athalie has received an Award of Merit ribbon for her image.

Phillipa Alexander also received an Award of Merit for her, "Bear with Two Cubs" image in the February competition and these two images will now go into the "Best of the Best Competition" to be held in June 2012 so our club will have a presence in that competition as well.

Anne O‘Connor, Richard Claase, Ruth Timperon and Felix Staub have all received Honorable Mention ribbons for their images with Felix receiving an Honorable Mention on no less than 4 occasions for each one of his entered images.

Later this year, after the Best of the Best Competition, both the Award of Merit and Honorable Mention images are placed on a DVD prepared by the Photographic Society of America which is circulated to each of the participating clubs. The Best of the Best images are also presented each year at the Photographic Society of America conference in America.

AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
AWARDS RECEIVED AT APSCON
Three Northern Tasmanian Camera Club members received awards at the national photography conference APSCON dinner in the national Art Gallery, Canberra on Friday 21st September.

As well as receiving the Photographic Society of America Proficiency Distinction (PPSA) announced in the August DRUM Anne O'Connor, Phillipa Alexander, and Felix Staub, all received Australian Photographic Society awards as well.

Club President Anne and Felix both received the State Service honors for Australian Photographic Society (SSAPS) for State Service to photography in Tasmania. Anyone who has been associated with Tasmanian Photographic Federation or is a member of Australian Photographic Society in recent years will recognize the dedication of both to photography in Tasmania and know the awards are truly merited.

Felix was also honored with an "Excellence" of International Federation of Photographic Art (EFIAP), recognition of photographic achievements.

Phillipa Alexander, who unfortunately was unable to attend the presentation, was awarded "Associate" of the Australian Photographic Society (AAPS) and "Artiste" of International Federation Of Photographic Art (AFIAP) as well as receiving the PPSA.

Club members also won personal recognition in the Australian Interstate Photographic Competition (AIPC) which is conducted at APSCON each year.

INTERCLUB COMPETITION 2012 - 2013

FINAL RESULTS

PROJECTED IMAGE DIVISION

The Projected Image Division Inter-club Competition is open to all Photographic Society of America member clubs. This competition consists of four competitions/rounds during each competition year held in November, January, March and May. Each participating club may submit up to six images from six different club members in each round for a maximum of twenty-four images per competition year. The subject matter for the images submitted is unrestricted or “open". Club members with the best images receive recognition; approximately 10% are given Honorable Mentions and 10% receive Awards. The three clubs in each group with the highest total scores at the end of the season also receive recognition. This year the top 3 clubs from Group D will move up to Group C next season, and the lowest average scoring clubs from Group C will move to Group D. The top 3 clubs in the C Group will move to Group B. The logic is to attempt to keep the competitions more evenly matched. This is the 2nd year that Northern Tasmanian Camera Club has entered this Competition, 1st year in Group D this year in Group C.

INTERCLUB COMPETITION 2016 - 2017

The Northern Tasmanian Camera Club achieved third place in the Photographic Society of America Inter-club Competition in E grade for 2016 - 2017. As a result, the club has been promoted to D grade. There is strong member support for continuing to participate in the Photographic Society of America Inter-club Competition. It may be that the Northern Tasmanian Camera Club will be the only Australian camera club to participate in the 2017 – 2018 competitions.

The club is anxiously waiting for the results of the fourth round of the Inter-club competition in C grade. The club entered a strong set of six images. A high placed score in the fourth round may see the club promoted to “B” grade next year.

A decision has been made by the club committee to enter the Nature Inter-club competition. Similar format to the above Inter-club competition. The definition of nature is broad; and can include landscape images e.g. waterfalls. Images should not include “the hand of man” or have elements cloned into or deleted from images.

As a result, Northern Tasmanian Camera Club has been promoted to Group B for the next competition. This continues the trend. We have now advanced from Group E to Group B in successive seasons, which is a massive achievement, considering that the competition gets tougher in the higher grades.

Many thanks to Phillipa Alexander for organizing this year’s participation in the Photographic Society of America Inter-club competition. Phillipa’s intuition about what makes top class images has been on display with the Photographic Society of America Inter-club entries.

The Photographic Society of America Inter-club competition is an excellent activity for our club to be involved in. It is a very good way to channel our skills in photography. It also sends a message that we are prepared to challenge ourselves and compare ourselves to other camera clubs around the world.

Next year, as well as competing in Group B of the Photographic Society of America Inter-club competition, we will be competing in the Photographic Society of America Inter-club Nature competition. Time to check your nature photograph collection and send any potential winners to Phillipa.

Photo taken by Frank Styant Browne of a horse drawn caravan often used for overnight stays by Northern Tasmanian Camera Club members. In 1896, Frank Styant Browne, one of the founding members of Northern Tasmanian Camera Club, undertook a trip with the caravan from Launceston to the East Coast, lasting about 14 days and staying at locations along the way. He was accompanied by Joshua Higgs Jr, artist, pictured here painting in a photo taken by Frank Styant Browne. Frank Styant Browne’s account of the excursion recalls many of the characters they encountered on the trip. The pair followed this excursion up with a trip through the Meander Valley.
