Members will be asked to bring suitable negatives to work on.

Saturday 12th August 1939  Page 5 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The annual meeting of Newcastle North Camera Club was held on Wednesday, August 9. A good roll up of members was present to hear what was to be done in the coming twelve months.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr. E. Barlow: Hon.Secretary, Mr. F. Stanbury; Treasurer, Mr. R. Sargent.

The retiring president (Mr. Laws) gave a brief resume of the activities during the past, and asked members to give new officers the same loyal support that had been afforded to him and his fellow officers.

He also presented the club with a framed photograph of those members who participated in the first outing.

Members are reminded that the August competition is "Shipping" and the closing date is the first meeting night in September.

The next meeting of the Newcastle North Camera Club on Wednesday night will decide the window competition. and entries will be received up to that date. The artificial light competition will also close that night.

The club has initiated another point score competition, for the six months ending December. Winners of each monthly competition will be eligible.

Mr. Stanbury was the winner of the point score competition just concluded. His print was a technically sound and well composed study of a coiled rope on a wharf.

Mr. R Sargent was the winner of both the recent window and artificial light competitions. The subject for September is "Landscape".

Saturday 9th September 1939  Page 5 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The outbreak of war has caused Newcastle North Camera Club to postpone indefinitely its "shipping" competition. At the last meeting, members were warned against using their cameras in the vicinity of wharves, oil tanks, forts and similar subjects, and the club decided to rearrange its list of competitions for the coming months to order to avoid such subjects.

September's competition is "landscape" and it will close on the date of the first meeting in October. Attention has been drawn to the series of lectures held at Kodak's Newcastle branch each alternate Friday night. The next is on September 15.

Saturday 7th October 1939  Page 5 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

Club competitions were advanced a further point at the meeting of the Newcastle North Camera Club on Wednesday night. The standard of prints submitted was above the average.

A special open competition proved popular with members. The prints in this group will be of interest when the judges give a ruling.

This type of competition will be repeated later. A special prize will be provided for a competition to close on Wednesday, November 1. The subject will be "A Vase of Flowers".

Members are reminded that the monthly subject will be "Sport".

Saturday 21st October 1939  Page 5 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

Monthly competitions held by the Newcastle North Camera Club continue to attract large entries. Last month's subject was Landscapes, and was won by Mr. Sanderson, with Mr. Sanbury in second place. A special open com- petition went to Mr. Clack, the prize being a parcel of bromide printing paper.

Members are reminded that two competitions close next meeting night. The first is the regular monthly event, the subject being Sport, and the second, a special subject - a vase of flowers. Entries for both competitions close on Wednesday, November 1.

The club this week decided to organize a bus picnic, details of which will be arranged later.

Saturday 4th November 1939  Page 5 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

A beginners class for the benefit of novices and young members is being started by the Newcastle North Camera Club, and anyone interested should get in touch with the Hon.Secretary.

The club has instituted a membership drive, and will award a complete color outfit to the one who persuades the most recruits to join before Christmas.

December 13, has been set aside for a social night, and in reminding members of this fact, the club announces that everyone is welcome to attend.

The competition subject for November is a cloud study.

Saturday 18th November 1939  Page 5 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

An interesting talk on the coloring of prints was given to members of the Newcastle North Camera Club on Wednesday night by Mr. G. Shortland, who dealt with both oil and crayon methods.

At the end of the talk, Mr. Shortland answered many questions, which tended to show that the subject had greatly appealed to members.

The club is receiving plenty of inquiries concerning its proposed beginners class, which will start early in the New Year. Full details may be had from the Hon.Secretary (Mr. F. Stanbury).

The only fee payable for club services is the usual membership fee.

Saturday 16th December 1939  Page 3 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

A social gathering on Wednesday night marked the end of Newcastle North Camera Club photographic activities for 1939. Members had an enjoyable night, topped off with the screening of a film in Kodachrome by Mr. Edwards. The film was made available by the Newcastle manager of Kodak's (Mr. Dudley).

The first meeting for 1940 will be held on January 10, when the beginners class will commence. Anyone interested is requested to get in touch with the Hon.Secretary (Mr. F. Stanbury).

Saturday 27th April 1940  Page 3 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

Continued progress is reported by Newcastle North Camera Club, the headquarters of which is at Tighe's Hill. Membership is increasing, and a general all-round keenness is being shown. Meetings are held on alternate Wednesdays, the next being on May 1.

Members at present are being assisted greatly by a series of lectures on all phases of photography. The next talk Is on chemistry of photography. to be followed by one on stellar photography and another on X-ray work.

Regular monthly competitions are held, the current one, closing on May 1, being on birds and animals. The last competition was won by Mr. F. Stanbury. the Judges commenting on the excellence of his work.

Intending members should get in touch with Mr. E.V. Campbell, of Tighe's Hill.

Saturday 3rd August 1940  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

A most interesting lecture was given to members of Newcastle North Camera Club on astronomical photography by Mr. Howarth. Members derived much pleasure and instruction from this lecture, for it is a branch of photography with which few men are conversant, but Mr. Howarth's explicit explanations, and his beautiful slides of the apparently unseen left nothing to be desired. Members have been kindly invited to his observatory, and all are looking forward to a very pleasant and instructive evening. In spite of the cold weather, membership is gradually creeping up, and members, generally, are showing a very marked improvement in the class of work they are turning out.

Saturday 28th September 1940  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

HELP TO BEGINNERS
The Newcastle North Camera Club decided at its last meeting that more help should be extended to beginners. To this end it was arranged that all prints from club outings should be enlarged in the club-room on the meeting night following the outing. At least one film will also be processed. As a further aid the beginners class has been reformed and members who enroll will be coached in all branches of the art.

The next meeting will be held on October 2. Prints In the texture and silhouette competitions are due on that date.

Saturday 8th February 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

Members paid a visit to Mr. Howarth's observatory on Monday, February 3, and spent a very enjoyable evening, the intricacies of stellar photography being well expounded by Mr. Howarth.

The competition held in connection with the Spitfire Canoe Derby has closed, the winner being Mr. J. Brown, of Mayfield, and the runner-up Mr. F. Stanbury, of Tighe's Hill. The prize was a silver cup presented by Mr. F. Jeans, of The Spitfire Canoe Derby committee.

New members were welcomed at the last meeting on February 5, and it was decided to hold a competition in connection with the police carnival, to be held at the Show Ground on February 22. First prize is a silver cup, entrance fee sixpence per print (to be unmounted), and the competition is open not only to club members but to the general public as well. Competition prints to be left with Campbell, chemist. Tighe's Hill.

Saturday 22nd February 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

An interesting lecture on the manufacture and projection of lantern slides was given to members of Newcastle North Camera Club this week by Rev. Nicholls, of Waratah. Mr. Nichols demonstrated the superiority of slides made by projection (bromide) over those made by contact printing. He explained that the maker was able to trim projected slides, the same as with ordinary enlarging. He illustrated his talk with examples projected on a screen, showing errors and methods of correction, and also dealt exhaustively with toning and thiocarbamide processing. Newcastle North Camera Club is running a competition, which is open to the general public, in connection with the Police Carnival. A silver cup has been provided for the winning print. Entries, which are 6d each, are to be left with Mr. Campbell, chemist, Tighe's Hill, on or before March 1.

Saturday 15th March 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

Continued progress and sustained enthusiasm by members are reported from Newcastle North Camera Club, which is now preparing for its salon in June.

It is expected that many very creditable prints will be exhibited at the salon.

Membership of the club has increased considerably and a high level has been maintained in spite of the many enlistments. In fact, officials aver that the club has sufficient members in the A.I.F. to form a branch of their own.

At the fortnightly meeting held this week it was decided to extend for 14 days the camera competition held on the events at the recent Police Carnival. Prints are sought from the general public, and these may be left at Campbell's Chemist Shop, Tighe's Hill. A fine cup has been given for this competition.

Last week-end the club had a camera outing at Toronto, where a great deal of experimental work was carried out. Members who participated are awaiting the results eagerly.

The annual picnic will be held at Morisset on March 23. Members of the public are invited to attend and take their cameras.

New members have been given instruction in developing, printing and enlarging, with excellent results. The club has its own dark-room and complete equipment for the use of members, and it meets fortnightly at Tighe's Hill.

Any information concerning the club may be had from Mr. Campbell, chemist, Tighe's Hill, or Mr. C. Glass, manager of Washing H. Saul's branch at Mayfleld.

Saturday 19th April 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

Intensification and reduction of negatives was the subject chosen by Mr A.T. Ullman at the last meeting of the Newcastle Photographic Society.

Mercuric chloride was the method used for intensification and the negative chosen for the demonstration was so thin that it was impossible to make a satisfactory print on the most contrasty paper. After treatment in mercuric chloride, however, the negative could easily be printed on a normal or medium grade printing paper.

Reduction was then demonstrated with success by the use of the well known Farmer's Reducer. Negatives to be reduced were so dense that printing was almost impossible. When treated they were of average density.

Coming lectures to the society include lantern slides, by Mr Nicholls, of Waratah; microscopic photography, by Mr Hamilton (Sydney) and a talk by Mr Paul Home, of Kodak's. Invitations to attend are extended to all photographers, including members of Newcastle North Camera Club and the Cessnock Photographic Society. More details of these lectures will be available shortly.

The Council of the Newcastle Photographic Society early in May is instituting a beginners class twice a month. The subjects to be covered will be exposure, developing the film, contact printing and enlarging. This class will be open to all, not only society members. Those desiring to enroll are asked to write to the Hon.Secretary, Mr E.C. Sinclair, Box 18, Newcastle, or to call at Kodak's Ltd., Wolfe Street, Newcastle. The classes are free to all.

DIANA'S NOTES BY THE WAY
JUST how much snapshots from home mean to the fighting men abroad re quires little explanation on my part, but I do want to say a word of appreciation for the work of members of the Snapshots from Home League. This organization is working through the Y.M.C.A., and is now established throughout Australia. Any soldier who requires a snap of his home, mother, sister, or girl friend simply writes to the Y.M.C.A. or the League and the job is done. In Newcastle, an enthusiastic band of amateur photographers has been working on the scheme for many months. Unheralded and unsung, they have taken dozens of photographs for soldiers overseas, and tramped many weary miles in the course of doing so. The Newcastle North Camera Club is one of the chief organizations doing this work. The Hon.Secretary is Mr. F.A. Stanbury. Either the Y.M.C.A. (Mr. T. Laing) or Mr. Stanbury. at 27 Mitchell-street, Tighe's Hill, will be pleased to hear from those desiring this service.

Saturday 14th June 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The next meeting of the Newcastle North Camera Club will be held on June 25. Monthly competition results must be finalized on this date so that the annual presentation of trophies can take place at the club's "smoko" to be held on July 7.

As this is a holiday weekend no outing has been arranged but a weekend trip to Barrington Tops has been arranged for the near future. Those members intending to take this trip should get in touch with the club secretary, Mr. T. Parkinson.

The secretary reported a letter of appreciation from the organizer of the Y.M.C.A. regarding the club's cooperation in the "Snapshots from Home League" effort.

A vote of appreciation was also recorded for the invitation, from the Newcastle Photographic Society, for members of the above club to attend recent lectures given by members of the Royal Photographic Society lecturing at Newcastle.

Saturday 21st June 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The Newcastle North Camera Club lecture series for Junior members is progressing favorably and seems very popular judging by the number attending. Next meeting night, June 25, at the club-room, Tighe's Hill, the lecturer will be Mr. E. Barlow. His subject. "Filters: Their Uses and Effects", should prove both Interesting and entertaining.

Members please note that arrangements have been completed for an outing to Barrington Tops on July 19, leaving Saturday at noon, and returning Sunday night. Fourteen members have already expressed a desire to attend this outing, and any others wishing to do so please get in touch with the club secretary, Mr. T. Parkinson.

Saturday 28th June 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The Newcastle North Camera Club meeting on June 25, was largely attended. The lecture given by Mr. E. Barlow, instead of being "Filters and Their Effects", was really a treatise on the different negative emulsions and their color sensitivity, and how the use of filters corrected or over-corrected different colors.

Mr. Barlow illustrated his lecture with numerous prints and explained that unless the photographer knew to what extent a particular film was color sensitive, filters could not be used to their best advantage in color correction. He has promised "Filters and Photographing Colored Objects" as a further lecture on some future date.

Last Saturday, 16 members attended a lecture given by Mr. W. Filmer at his laboratory at Toronto. Mr. Filmer gave a lecture on lens corrections and light, and afterwards gave a demonstration of microscopic slide making and projection of same. Mr. Filmer may be remembered as a science lecturer at Newcastle Technical College, and is a keen microscopic worker. A visit to Mr. Filmer's residence is well worth any amateur photographer's while.

The next club meeting will be held at the clubroom, Tighe's Hill, on July 9, when the annual smoko and presentation of prizes will take place.

Saturday 5th July 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The Newcastle North Camera Club meeting will be held next Wednesday night at the club rooms, Tighe's Hill, when the annual social, presentation of trophies, and election of officers will take place.
The series of lectures, which is being delivered for the benefit of beginners, is proving popular. Judging by attendances.

The activities of individual members now cover a wide field of photography. Members are watching with keen interest, the work of Messrs. G. Shortland and P. Stansbury, who have recently been concentrating on table top photography, and the photo-micrographic achievements of Mr. C. White, whose photography of "wogs", etc., with self-made micrographic camera is both excellent and unusual.

Members please note that the trip to Barrington Tops will definitely take place on Saturday, July 12.

Saturday 2nd August 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The high spot of the meeting of the Newcastle North Camera Club on Wednesday, August 6, will be a demonstration of processing negative material by the president (Mr. Stansbury), following a demonstration of exposure to Junior members at an outing on Sunday, August 3.

This is the second of a series of lectures being given by senior members for the benefit of beginners. Anyone wishing to attend the lectures are asked to interview Mr. Campbell, chemist, Tighe's Hill.

The winner of the point score competition for the year just ended was Mr. G Shortland. Mr. R. Tucker holds the club trophy for the best individual print submitted.

Saturday 15th November 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

R. Tucker won the Newcastle North Camera Club monthly competition for September, with T. Goodchild second and G. Shortland third. Glassware is the subject for this month, and members are asked to take their cameras to the club room next meeting night. Subjects are to be photographed there.

To-morrow members will have an outing at Dora Creek, leaving Hamilton station by train about 8.30am. The club's annual social is set down for December 10. An interesting feature at club meetings at present is a "quiz" session. Members are asked certain questions, and then the correct answers are supplied.

Saturday 6th December 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The Newcastle North Camera Club, November competition on a flower study from a garden, was won by G. Shortland, with R. Tucker second and F. Stanbury, third.

On December 10, the club is holding its bi-annual social. An outing at Bandory Grove has been arranged for this week-end, and members interested are asked to get in touch with the president.

Several new members have joined lately, and the membership is progressing satisfactorily. The "glass" competition closes next meeting night, December 10.

Saturday 20th December 1941  Page 4 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The Newcastle North Camera Club held its bi-annual social last meeting, and an enjoyable night was spent by club members. As next meeting falls on Christmas Eve, there will be no meeting, but business as usual on January 7, when a lecture will be given by Mr. Campbell. Last month's competition was won by R. Tucker. The competition for December, "Landscape", closes next meeting, January 7.

Saturday 17th January 1942  Page 2 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

The Newcastle North Camera Club season opened at the club-rooms during the week and the president wished all members greater successes in the photographic sphere in the coming year. The lecture on "Toning", which was to have been given at the last meeting has been deferred until next night, Wednesday, January 21.

The monthly competition for January is "Advertising", to close on February 4. The social secretary reported a highly successful social held in December, and the treasurer reported a successful year financially, with membership satisfactory, despite the military duty demands of some members.

Saturday 7th February 1942  Page 2 - The Newcastle Sun (NSW)

An outing has been arranged by Newcastle North Camera Club for Toronto to-morrow and also on Sunday, February 15, one week later, for those members who cannot attend on the first outing. Members are to meet at Hamilton Station at 10.30am, on both days. There was a discussion on future competitions at the last meeting.

A special meeting night has been arranged for Wednesday next, February 11. The club has a special negative to work on, for enlarging purposes. Beginners are sure to gain extra knowledge from this instructive night. All members and intending members are invited to be present.

Friday 1st October 1943  Page 8 - Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners Advocate (NSW)
