PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF QUEENSLAND

FORMED 8th FEBRUARY 1954

The Photographic Society of Queensland Inc., represents affiliated photographic clubs in Queensland and northern New South Wales and promotes the art and science of photography in all its forms.

The Photographic Society of Queensland charter is to provide an array of services to our affiliates and their members, such as: Competition opportunities, Accredited Judges and Guest Speakers for club events, Forum and Workshop opportunities, Remote Judging services, a range of equipment that clubs may borrow and Public Liability Insurance coverage if required. And as a bonus there is also the opportunity for our affiliated Clubs to mount a Photographic Exhibition, free of any charge, at a very visible Gallery provided exclusively to Photographic Society of Queensland by our good friends at Photo Continental (Mt Gravatt Central, Brisbane).

All members of affiliated camera clubs are automatically members of Photographic Society of Queensland. As a member of Photographic Society of Queensland, you are afforded the opportunity to network right across Queensland and northern New South Wales with other people and other clubs who share your passion for photography. The Photographic Society of Queensland committee includes members from clubs from the south of the state to the far north.

QUEENSLAND PHOTO MEETING
A meeting will be held at the rooms of the Royal Geographical Society in Ann Street on Monday at 8pm to form the Photographic Society of Queensland.

While there have been several active photographic groups in Queensland there has been no society with a State-wide coverage on every branch and aspect of photography. The formation of the Photographic Society of Queensland will aim to bridge this gap.

The society will be open to both amateur and professional photographers and will cater for still and cine sections, the latter under the direct control of the Queensland Amateur Cine Society which lists among its members the world title winner, Mr. Keith Hall.

There are already in this State a number of first-class workers who have gained recognition in the international salons of photography through out the world and the society hopes to take full advantage of their presence in a series of lectures and demonstrations of technique. Beginners needs will be catered for by special classes.

At the last meeting of the Ipswich Photography Society members entered freely into general discussion and a lot of useful information was the result. Last week a few members attended the inaugural meeting of the Photographic Society of Queensland thereby becoming foundation members. It is hoped that in the near future a building will be available as headquarters for the use of all members for lectures, as a workroom, library and for exhibitions and as a rest room. The next meeting of the Ipswich society will be the usual monthly competition night. The set subject is "Night photography without flash". An open event will be run in conjunction. The judges again are Messrs. W. Sneyd and C. Zeilstra. At the last meeting Mr George Londy was welcomed as a new member and the society is still hopeful of many more new members in the near future.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF QUEENSLAND
At a very well-attended meeting on 8th February, at the Royal Geographical Society Hall in Brisbane it was decided to form a Photographic Society of Queensland. The meeting was arranged by a group of keen photographers headed by Dr. Buchanan, President of the Brisbane Camera Group and Mr. R. Gregory ARPS, who sent out a circular to a number of bodies and individuals who were known to be interested in the project. The response was highly satisfactory and most persons circularized stated their willingness either to attend, or, if unable to do so, to become foundation members.

The meeting opened with a brief introduction by Dr. Buchanan and Mr. R. Gregory took the chair. Mr. Gregory outlined the aims and objects of the proposed Society, indicating where the Society could fill gaps existing in the photographic life of the State. There was a pressing need for a permanent headquarters of photography in the capital city of the State where a visiting photographer could be sure of meeting his photographic friends. A strong central body would be immensely useful in providing good lectures, demonstrations and shows and would be in a position to assist greatly the beginner and the country workers as well by organizing postal portfolios. A central body commending State-wide respect would also be able to stage annual exhibitions covering all branches of photography and would be the natural body to represent the State’s interests in a future All-Australian Federation.

Over one hundred foundation members were enrolled and it was decided ultimately to seek Royal patronage. It is understood that the Society will approach the Queensland Amateur Cine Society to explore ways and means of co-operation between the two bodies to their mutual advantage and for this purpose it was agreed to invite the Queensland Amateur Cine Society to nominate a member to join a Committee about to be selected by the meeting to draw up a Constitution and Rules of this Society. A series of groups was formed to run within the Society. The Chairman asked each group to nominate one member of a Constitution making Committee, and the following members were nominated: Pictorial Group, Dr. A. Buchanan; Color Group, Mr. Keene; Medical Group, Mr. Hollywood; Scientific and Technical Group, Mr. A. Martins; Press and Sport Group, Mr. W. Jones; Cine, Mr. Burne; Candid, Mr. Kemp; Miniature, Mr. Vance; Nature, Mr. R. Close. The house agreed that a total of 15 members would constitute the Committee and after a number of names had been submitted the following five members were elected by ballot: R. Gregory, G. Grant-Thomson, D. Pfoor, M.F. Masters and Dr. Sager. In case the Queensland Amateur Cine Society decided not to nominate a member to this Committee, Mr. McDonough was chosen to sit on the Committee to bring the number to the required fifteen.

It is hoped to carry out the work of this Committee with the least delay and to prepare a constitution and body of rules for the everyday working of the Society as soon as possible. These will be submitted to a general meeting, in approximately two months time, at which the election of office-bearers will take place and a program will be prepared for the coming season.

In closing this historic meeting, Mr. Gregory expressed his gratification at the excellent response the organizers had met with, as evidenced by the keen attendance that night. He was in no doubt now that there was every prospect that the new Society would be a strong and worthy advocate of photography in this State.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF QUEENSLAND
The general meeting at the beginning of February appointed a committee to draw up a constitution. This committee held several meetings under the chairmanship of Mr. R. Gregory and using a copy of the constitution of the “Royal”, it drafted a constitution based on the Royal Photographic Society document, modifying it to suit local needs and conditions. All references were deleted to Associateship and Fellowship, since we feel that eventually these must rightly be the prerogative of an all-Australian body.

However, we have yet to present the constitution for ratification to a further general meeting in June, the exact date of which is not yet fixed. We feel, however, that there should not be a great deal of attention. The draft has been submitted to a solicitor, corrected and suitably modified so that it will also comply with “The Companies Act”, under which we will probably register it in order to give our Society sound legal standing.

FIRST ANNUAL SHOW A BIG SUCCESS
The first annual competition of the Ipswich Photography Society was held in the C.W.A. Hall last Saturday and proved a big success in every way. Prints displayed totaled 104, giving the Judges a very busy time during the afternoon. The evening proved a delightful one for the members and friends present, distinguished guests including the Mayor and Mayoress (Alderman and Mrs J.T. Finimore), Dr. Buchanan, Secretary of the Photographic Society of Queensland and President of the Brisbane Camera Group; Dr. S. Patterson, Patron of the Ipswich Photography Society, Mr H.A. Snape, of Kodak (Australasia) Pty., Ltd., Mr L. Scruse, of C.T. Lorenz Ltd., other members of the Brisbane Camera Group and the judges, Mr Ralph Gregory, President of the Queensland Photographic Society and Mr Garth Grant Thomson. The President of the Ipswich Photography Society (Mr Allen Griffiths) spoke on the aims and accomplishments of the society and introduced the Mayor, who was appreciative of the work presented and expressed a desire to help in any way.
