ROCKHAMPTON CAMERA CLUB
The members of the Rockhampton Camera Club spent the afternoon on Saturday at the Botanical Gardens. The light was very bad, but one or two good negatives were obtained by the more advanced amateurs in the party. The President (the Rev. W. Smith) photographed the whole group, at the same time giving an illustration of the necessary exposure to suit the conditions then prevailing. Pictures were also taken by the different members of the Club and these will be produced at the next meeting of the Club and a comparison made of the different results. The Treasurer (Mr. S. Hunter) then entertained the members at afternoon tea.

Grimley gave an interesting demonstration of contact printing with coralite bromide paper with the aid of the gaslight. He explained the exact amount of exposure required for such work and each sheet of paper was developed in the presence of the members. ROCKHAMPTON CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting (June) of the Rockhampton Camera Club was held on the 2nd June. There was an excellent attendance of members, including four ladies. After business of a formal nature had been transacted, the prints and negatives obtained from the outings since the last meeting were handed round and criticized. Some very nice work was shown. Mr. F.S. Grimley (vice president) then gave a most lucid and interesting demonstration on the working of coralyte bromide paper. As a test to the members from his demonstration, he kindly offered three enlargements in coralyte paper to the best print in coralyte that can be produced by next meeting. Seven new members were admitted to the club. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Grimley for his instructive demonstration. I think our club is going to prove a most successful concern, judging by the interest that has been taken in it, and I will let you know how it is getting on from time to time.

ROCKHAMPTON CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the members of the Rockhampton Camera Club was held on the premises of Mr. W.S. Hunter, East street, last night. The President (the Rev. W. Smith) occupied the chair, and there were eighteen others present.

A letter was received from Mr. J. Jupp, of Proserpine offering to exchange prints of North Queensland scenery in return for views of the district around Rockhampton. Members desirous of possessing the North Queensland views were advised to send any spare prints they had through the Secretary (Mr. H. Thomasson).

Five new members were elected, bringing the total membership up to thirty-five.

It was decided to engage an omnibus and drive to Thozet's Creek for the next afternoon outing, to take place on Saturday, the 16th July. It was agreed to hold the next monthly meeting at the residence of the President, when that gentleman would give a demonstration how to make lantern slides from negatives.

The President and Messrs. W.S. Hunter and F.S. Grimley were appointed judges in connection with the competition for the two best prints on coralyte paper. The prize were enlargement of the winning prints, presented by Mr. Grimley. Mr. W. Wetherell won the competition, with Miss Skinner second. It was decided to give a prize of a packet of half-plates for the best print representing a study of animal life, the prints to be judged at the September meeting.

The President gave an interesting account of his recent visit to Melbourne in connection with the Methodist Conference. He stated that he was present at one of the lessons in photography at the Technical College in Melbourne and witnessed a demonstration on the three-color process. He added that photography was regarded as a technical subject in Victoria, but not in Queensland, and the Queensland Government refused to subsidize it as such. In referring to the smartness with which photographs were turned out in Melbourne he said that on one occasion when the conference adjourned for lunch, the delegates, totaling over 100, had their photographs taken by an enterprising photographer just outside the building, and when they returned to resume business in the afternoon the finished photographs properly mounted were offered for sale.

Mr. Grimley said that he took a photograph of the swearing in ceremony at the time of the Commonwealth celebrations in Sydney and on the following day he went to a firm of photographic dealers to present it with a photograph of the ceremony, but to his surprise he found the picture of the same ceremony already in the window and was told it had been there since the previous afternoon. A criticism of the prints from negatives taken at the previous outing brought the meeting to a close.

A NATURAL SIZE PHOTOGRAPH
We have seen a photograph of the Lady Northcote nugget, which was found on the 6th instant by Messrs. T. Davidson, R. M'Eacharn, and J. Tonkin at the Dee rush, and which weighs 171 oz. 12dwt., taken by the Rev. W. Smith, the President of the Rockhampton Camera Club. The print gives the natural size of the nugget and shows distinctly a gold sheen. The photograph must be pronounced a very successful one from many points of view. It is the intention of Mr. Smith to forward copies of the photograph to the Governor-General (Lord Northcote) and Lady Northcote.

ROCKHAMPTON CAMERA CLUB
The opening of the rooms of the Rockhampton Camera Club in Alma Street took place on Thursday 22nd February. The President (Mr. F.S. Grimley) occupied the chair, and there were about eighty members and friends present. In his opening remarks Mr. Grimley said that the rooms had been opened for the purpose of encouraging photography in all its branches. For nearly two years the club had been working under difficulties in not having rooms of its own, but through the courtesy of Mr. W.S.A. Hunter, the Hon. Treasurer of the club, they had been able to hold their meetings at his premises in East Street, and he took the present opportunity of thanking him. As there was to be a lantern slide competition, and also a number of other local slides made by the members shown that night, the friends present would have an opportunity judging the work of the members. They could see by the photographs on the walls that some good work was being done. He hoped that in the near future the membership would be doubled, or even three times as large as it was at present. They intended to form a class for the encouragement of new members. He hoped that they would spend an enjoyable evening - Mr. Grimley then exhibited lantern slides of Ireland, Scotland, and America on the screen, which were much admired. Some of the local slides were good, and caused a great amount of interest, as the places were known to most of those present. In the lantern-slide competition, Mr. F. Toyne secured first place with a picture of miners working at the Dee Rush. Mr. Grimley announced that Mr. E.N. Symons had offered a prize of two packets of lantern plates for best lantern slide made by a member of the club, and that the competition would take place in a month’s time. During the evening Mr. H. Nielsen gave several selections on his gramophone. Before the gathering dispersed, the President said that the members could not let the present occasion pass without in some way showing their thanks to the Treasurer, and he had much pleasure in handing Mr. Hunter a photo album.

With the view of making the acquaintance of visiting knights of the camera, it has been decided to throw the club rooms open during Carnival Week, and visitors may be assured that no effort will be spared to make their visit as pleasant as possible.

It is pleasant work to have to report the good feeling existing between the clubs of Rockhampton and Mt. Morgan, and we are at present in receipt of an invitation from the Golden Mount to a day’s picnic with them. These social functions play an important part in the life of our club, as it tends to keep up the enthusiasm, and is the means of getting the young amateurs into the ranks. Our club at present is troubled with the lantern slide epidemic. At the demonstrations the number of visitors is remarkable and judging by the applause the epidemic is not likely to abate for some time.

AN EXHIBITION OF PICTURES
An exhibition of world's prize pictures will be made under the auspices of the Rockhampton Camera Club in the Protestant Hall at eight o'clock to night. The collection includes about 120 pictures, forty-six of which have gained prizes in high-class competitions. As the price of admission is only nominal, and the collection of pictures is an excellent one, the opportunity should not be missed of viewing it. The pictures, which will be returned to Melbourne on Wednesday next, were kindly lent by Messrs. Baker and Rouse, who are the Australian agents for the Kodak, Limited.

ROCKHAMPTON CAMERA CLUB
The public exhibition, held recently, was a great success. Considerable interest was taken in the Kodak £1,000 competition, pictures lent by Messrs. Baker and Rouse, who also got together the Brisbane pictures, and forwarded them to the Rockhampton Camera Club. These, and the fine collection sent forward by the various camera clubs, were a revelation to the visitors. The lantern was operated by Mr. F.T. Grimley, and an excellent lot of slides, contributed by local and Brisbane workers were put through.

CAMERA CLUB
Local Body Formed
AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHERS

A large number of amateur photographers met on Thursday night to discuss the formation of a camera club. Mr. J.H. Wood presided. Those present decided to form a club, which is to be known as the Rockhampton Camera Club. The objects of the club were decided upon: "To advance amateur photography by means of lectures, practical demonstrations, field outings, exhibitions, oversea correspondents, and helpful advice by correspondence with country members, also any other means to further the knowledge of club members".

It was further decided that membership be open to all amateur photographers. The membership fee was fixed at a nominal amount. Meetings will be held alternate Thursdays. Until other arrangements can be made meetings will take place at Kodak, as the club has not yet been able to arrange for a suitable meeting room. Members were advised at the conclusion of the meeting to bring forward any point on photography for discussion.

MAYOR WELCOMES PROPOSED EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS
Judging by the enthusiastic manner in which the Mayor of Rockhampton (Mr R.W. Evans) was greeted a decision of the trustees of the Queensland National Art Gallery to send a selected number of pictures and etchings from the gallery to be exhibited in Rockhampton and other coastal towns, there is little doubt that arrangements will be made for a display locally.

"IT is an excellent idea and will do much to encourage an interest in art", said the Mayor. "About thirty year ago the Queensland. National Art Gallery staged a similar exhibition in Rockhampton and it created considerable interest. Paintings were exhibited in the School of Arts and opportunity was taken by local artists, prominent among which was Mrs N.M.M. Davidson, to copy these work of art".

The Mayor expressed the opinion that the main hall of the School of Arts was about the only suitable place available for the exhibition. He was prepared to take the matter up with the City Council and see what could be done regarding subsidizing the proposal so far as Rockhampton was concerned, but, as the expense would be small, he did not anticipate any difficulty in that direction.

ROCKHAMPTON CAMERA CLUB
The Mayor recalled the time when the Rockhampton Camera Club — of which he was promoter and secretary — staged an exhibition in premises formally occupied by McVeigh, coach-builder, in Alma Street. "Those were the days when you had to sensitize printing paper and an amateur photographer's room was like a chemist's shop", said the Mayor, who has in his possession "snaps" that he took more than 40 years ago.

CAMERA CLUB MEETING
At the fortnightly meeting of the Rockhampton Camera Club, held at the Government Health Laboratory last Thursday night, it was decided that members of the club should accept an invitation to accompany members of the Rockhampton Naturalists Club on their field days.

Mr H.G. Simmons, who represented the Naturalists Club at the meeting, said that it would be advantageous to the members of both clubs if they could combine their outings. He said that the naturalists wished to obtain photographic records of specimens gathered during their outings and at the same time the members of the Camera Club would benefit by the experience gained on these field days. A combined field day at Lion Mountain has been arranged for Saturday, July 29.

The president of the Camera Club (Dr K. Porter) thanked Mr Simmons on behalf of the photographers and assured him that they would be pleased to accept the invitation.

Special business for the night was a lecture by one of the Camera Club members (Mr H. Baker) on photographic filters and their uses. This lecture proved interesting to all members and provided material for an enlightening discussion on the composition of light and the effects of filtered light on the various photographic films.

Another Camera Club member (Mr F.W. Webb), concluded the night's program with a lecture and practical demonstration on fashion photography and several other club members then took photographs under Mr Webb's direction.

CAMERA CLUB MEETING
An own choice print competition for the Junior section of the club and a lecture on 35mm cameras and technique were the highlights of the fortnightly meeting of the Rockhampton Camera Club last Thursday night.

It was pleasing to see the large attendance and the number and quality of prints entered in the competition, which was won by Master K. Gricks, with Mr J. Bartholomew second and Miss J. McKinlay third. Guest speaker for the night, Mr T. Bencke, was called upon to give a personal criticism of the competition prints, and imparted some valuable information regarding points of composition and print quality on which prints are judged.

In his informative lecture on 35mm cameras and technique, Mr Bencke traced the history of 35mm cameras back to the first Leica, which was built by Oscar Barnack, an instrument maker for the Leitz microscope factory in Germany in 1914 - a period when a photographer's reputation was judged by the enormity of his camera.

Mr Bencke outlined the advantages and disadvantages of miniature cameras (there are more advantages than disadvantages - any 35mm fan will tell you) and impressed several points which should be digested by all camera users. Topmost of these points is the necessity of knowing well the mechanical workings of a camera, so that one's mind is free to concentrate on the artistic side of making a picture. The lecture was concluded with a detailed account of the precise processing so necessary in miniature work, and the club members showed their appreciation by a spontaneous round of applause and an invitation to "call again".

The combined Naturalists Club - Camera Club outing to Lion Mountain, which was to have taken place today, had to be canceled due to unsuitable weather, but it is hoped that a date will be set for a similar field day at the coast, sometime in August.

A full attendance is expected for the next meeting, two weeks hence, when art teacher, Mr C. Haywood, will give a lecture on pictorial composition, in conjunction with a landscape and seascape competition and a showing of photos of the Hartley Memorial. Visitors are cordially invited to attend the meeting which commences at 8pm on August 10 at the Commonwealth Health Laboratory.

CAMERA CLUB MEETING
On the eve of his departure for Melbourne, the president of the Rockhampton Camera Club (Dr. K.C. Porter) expressed his regrets at having to tender his resignation due to his transfer.

"I wish to thank the members of the Camera Club for their cooperation in the past, and wish them every success in the future", he said as the farewell party given in honor of himself and his wife at the conclusion of the club's fortnightly meeting last Thursday night.

The secretary (Mr. R. Gabriel) presented them with a small token of remembrance on behalf of the club and wished them God speed on their motor trip South.

Other activities for the night included a lecture on pictorial composition by the guest speaker, Mr. C. Haywood, and a landscape and seascape competition. In his talk, Mr. Haywood, although speaking solely from an artist's point of view, divulged many important points which apply to all branches of the graphic arts. He illustrated his lecture with some of his own water colors and rough pencil sketches.

"If an artist knows what to leave out of a picture he knows how much to include in the picture", Mr. Haywood stressed.

While this advice may seem redundant at first sight, it is, however, a very true statement, but unfortunately it is very hard for a photographer to move a tree that detracts from the beauty of a scene.

Another point made by the lecturer was: "Learn the elementary rules of composition and then forget them. After that let your feelings rather than your eyesight guide you in your picture-making efforts".

The junior section of the print competition was won by Mr. M. Brookfield, who has been a consistent winner in the past and should be due for a promotion to the senior section in the very near future. The senior grade was a little disappointing, as there were only three prints entered. Mr. H. Baker, another consistent first place-getter, took first and second places with two fine pictures in this section.

The club should have a worthy successor to Dr. Porter for the presidency in Mr. F.W. Webb, who was elected without an opponent.

Top of the bill for the next meeting night is a talk on cameras by the club secretary, Mr. "Russ" Gabriel, followed by a competition of flower shots. Looks like the bees will have to stand back for the next fortnight and let the cameras in close to collect some pollen on the lenses.

ROCKHAMPTON CAMERA CLUB
Due to the absence of a good showing of character study prints at the fortnightly meeting of the Rockhampton Camera Club last Thursday night, the time for this competition has been extended to give the members more time to collect some prints.

The president (Mr F.W. Webb) made an effort to find out why members were reticent to enter prints for the competitions. As many of the members possess only box cameras, they said that they are unable to take close-ups and many of the competition subjects are therefore outside the scope of their equipment. One club member gave a short talk on how to take close-ups with a box camera with the aid of a supplementary lens, such as a spectacle lens, held in front of the camera lens.

The subject for the next competition is "Hands". To the uninitiated, this subject may seem too common to warrant a second look, let alone a photograph; but very often it is the everyday object that makes the best photographic subject. Hands, when treated properly, make a picture that can tell a story which hundreds of words may not convey.

Of particular interest to all members was a practical demonstration on print retouching and finishing by Mr F. Webb. Starting with a "raw" black-and-white print, Mr Webb proceeded to show club members how to work on the print with a knife, pencil and brush, until the finished article was completely devoid of all disturbing marks and blemishes, and contained some highlight areas which were not in the original, but which made a world of difference to its quality.

It may be a good plan if several members get together and make a photographic record of the various stages of Mr Webb's demonstration, because of its value to photographers who intend exhibiting their work in the future, but do not have the "know-how" on how to make their work more acceptable to salon and competition judges.

AUSTRALIAN PICTURE WINS WORLD AWARD

THIS picture won first prize in the tenth Kodachrome World Color Slide Competition held in Paris, it's called "Heading Home", and it netted photographer Reg Fitzpatrick, of Rockhampton, Queensland, a world trip for two and a handful of dollars. Judges at the competition, organized by Kodak-Pathe of France, Air France, and the Paris magazine "Jours de France", selected Reg's slide from among 70,000 entries from dozens of countries. It's the first time this prize has been awarded to a non-French entry. Reg made his winner by combining the images from three separate slides - the horses, the clouds, and the sun were originally separate pictures. The competition was quite a triumph for Australian photographers. In all, 600 prizes were awarded, 19 of which went to Australia, and 13 of these to Queenslanders. Rockhampton and district netted six of these. Reg and his wife, Marj, are now on that world trip, and will return to Australia in mid-September. Just for the record, Reg, a pharmacist, also entered the winning picture in the pictorial section of the Rockhampton Camera Club National Exhibition of Color Photography - and won second prize.
