ABSEILERS BRING BLUFF INTO FOCUS
The Bluff at Encounter Bay was the focus of attention for more than 40 of the State's camera buffs at the weekend. All lenses were aimed at three men making their way down the side of the rock face with the aid of some very narrow-looking rope.

It was the fifth successive year the federation had held its seminar in the town at Queen's Birthday Weekend.

About a dozen camera clubs throughout the State were represented by 39 members who stayed at Victor during the weekend and by a number of photographers who traveled down from Adelaide for the day.

The people attending the seminar ranged in age from 20 to 70 years-old.

As well as balancing on the rocks at the base of the Bluff while they photographed the cave explorers, the federation members also visited Urimbirra Wildlife Park where they were given a lecture on the park by Tom Easling and a talk on nature photography by Steve Doyle. Later they were given a lecture on cave diving by Terry Rerdon.

The main speaker at the seminar was Stan Bankin, from Geelong, Victoria. He talked on camera care, artistic photography, and his 20 years experience behind a camera.

PHOTOGRAPHY CHAMP
Victor Harbor High School year 12 student, Scott Hedges, has excelled in the South Australian Photographic Federation competition.

Scott had all seven of his entries accepted into the competition and gained four merit certificates.

According to his father Stephen Hedges, this placed him second in the state as he gained the most individual awards.

The competition proved to be fruitful for Scott, but he had to overcome tough competition from Prince Alfred College and Banksia Park High School who had the most entries of any other schools.

Scott said he was the only entrant from Victor Harbor High School and it was good to go in a competition and do well. More than 138 photos were exhibited by 60-70 photographers.

TOP SHOT

Stuart Roberts of the South Coast Camera Club has won the newly presented prestigious David White Memorial trophy for the top landscape slide at the South Australian Photographic Federation annual exhibition. Mr. Roberts photograph of Hindmarsh falls was taken using a tripod and slow shutter speed - it was also judged top of the pictorial section.

The following is reproduced from the South Australian Photographic Federation June 2012 Newsletter, written by Howard Speed.

The South Australian Photographic Federation was formed on the 1st February 1962 when the Doug Mullins chaired a meeting of representatives from Photographic Clubs in South Australia and established an administrative body to govern amateur photography.

The 1950's was a "boom" decade when people began to tour our country more than ever before, taking photos with 35mm color slide film. Many people wished to improve their images so they joined camera clubs but as most of these new clubs lacked experience, they turned to the The Adelaide Camera Club [founded 1899] for speakers and judges. The Adelaide Camera Club could not handle the demand so Doug Mullins solved this problem by establishing the South Australian Photographic Federation. Over the past 50 years the South Australian Photographic Federation has conducted exhibitions at State, National and International levels. Likewise South Australia has hosted National conventions and seminars and has helped raise the standard of work for all members.

The The Adelaide Camera Club is one of the oldest clubs in Australia and the only club in South Australia to have survived both World Wars and the Great Depression. The The Adelaide Camera Club also absorbed the original South Australian Photographic Society [founded 1885] of which one print "Darby and Joan" dates from those days and is one of the few remaining and on display.

The main aim of the South Australian Photographic Federation is to encourage and promote amateur photography in SA.

South Australian Photographic Federation is affiliated with the Australian Photographic Society and the Photographic Society of America.
