ST. GEORGE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
On the meeting of September 1st, members of the St. George Photographic Society were guests of society member, noted photomicro-grapher, Mr. W.E. Hamilton, for a showing of micro movies. Before the showing Mr. Hamilton explained the method of taking movies through a microscope and the resultant showing proved Mr. Hamilton to be a man of extreme capabilities and patience. Moving pictures of flies actually taken through the eye of another fly, minute organisms tripping and eating other such organisms, and germs that gather in one's teeth, were but few of the wonders revealed, and the society extends its sincerest appreciation and thanks for the splendid exhibition in showing these films and also to Mrs. Hamilton for a most excellent supper.

The next meeting will be on September, 15th at the clubroom, lower hall, Palais Grande, Rockdale. Further details may be had from the Hon.Secretary, S.C. Bartlett.

At the meeting of September 15th of the St. George Photographic Society a "print criticism" night was held. All members entered prints and all prints showed a grasp of the basic needs of prints for exhibition and competition work. Criticism was by the president, Mr. S. Cross, who outlined to members the ways and means of making good prints better.

A further milestone in the history of the society has been passed with the inception of its first lady member, Mrs. L. Mitchell of Ramsgate, and it is hoped in the future to see more ladies in this society.

At the next meeting on September 29th a lecture will be given by Mr. Robertson of KODAK and this should prove a most instructive and enjoyable evening.

Meetings are held at the lower hall, Palais Grande, Rockdale, commencing at 8pm. Further details from the Hon.Secretary, S.C. Bartlett.

At the meeting on September 29th of the St. George Photographic Society a most interesting lecture on "The Technique of Development" was given by Mr. Robertson, of Kodaks Ltd. Mr. Robertson demonstrated the action of developers and chemicals on films and papers, and he showed where as two chemicals would only partly develop a film or paper, the addition of others would bring about full development. At the conclusion of the demonstration many questions were asked and all were answered by the lecturer.

The next meeting will be held on October 13th at the clubroom, Lower Hall, Palais Grande, Rockdale, commencing at 8pm. Further details from the Hon.Secretary, S.C. Bartlett.

At the meeting of October 13th of the above Society a demonstration was given on "Portraiture by Artificial Light" by club member Mr. J. McMillan. Mr. McMillan first explained what was meant by high and low key lighting, then with the aid of a dummy head and two lights, it was shown how to light the face for the best possible effect, first removing or lowering the patches of light and dark shadow.

Later a spotlight was added, and the use of this was also demonstrated. Many photos were taken by members under the guidance of Mr. McMillan, and these will be discussed at the next meeting on October 27th.

The Society was very pleased to welcome its second lady member, Mrs. Hamilton, wife of well known and pioneer photo-micrographer Mr. W.E. Hamilton.

The Society meets at the lower hall, Palais Grande, Rockdale. Further details from the Hon.Secretary, S.C. Bartlett.

At the meeting on September 1st, members were guests of Mr. W.E. Hamilton, well known photo-micrographer, at his home at Rockdale.

Many very interesting scientific films were shown, including Public Enemy No. 1 “The Fly”, and “The Hydra and the Water Flea”. Also shown were color films of beans growing, flowers opening, etc., all taken with the aid of a special time-lapse machine built and perfected by Mr. Hamilton. A color film, entitled “Burragorang Valley”, showed how, by skillful editing, a film of interest only to those directly concerned could be made into one of general interest.

On September 15th a “Print Criticism” night was held. All members entered prints, and these showed some grasp of the basic principles needed for exhibition and competition work. A most excellent and constructive criticism was given by the President, Mr. S. Gross.

Our regular meeting was held recently in the club rooms at the Palais Grande, where a very interesting color show was screened by Mr. Gale ARPS. This program was actually a travel record of a trip through Europe and the British Isles and back to Australia.

Mr. Hamilton thanked Mr. Gale for showing his films which, he considered, were of a remarkably high standard pictorially.

The next meeting was held on May 10th, and fortnightly from that date.

At our meeting on June 7th we had the pleasure of the company of Mr. J. Metcalfe and Mr. H. Jones ARPS.

Mr. Metcalfe gave a very interesting lecture on the merits of the artist and the photographer. He emphasized that whilst the camera is always limited to taking that which it sees and relying on the photographer to use it to the best advantage, the artist with his brushes has a much wider scope in the application of his colors to the canvas.

Both Mr. Metcalfe and Mr. Jones brought along examples of their work, and after explaining the ways in which they had obtained them, they answered many questions.

Increasing attendances at the fortnightly meetings of the society continue to reflect its good progress.

The meeting on 20th June was in the capable hands of Mr. John Thorpe, of the Photographic Society of New South Wales.

Mr. Thorpe screened a number of color transparencies of outstanding merit, and his exhibition was of great interest because of the growing interest in color by members of the St. George Society.

Notwithstanding the power restrictions, the next meeting on the 4th July took place; but the original item, “Photomicrography” by Mr. W.E. Hamilton, was postponed until power for his movie projector is available. Under illumination provided by carbide lamps, Mr. J.A. Mulligan, of the Sydney Morning Herald photographic staff, explained, with practical demonstrations, the uses of various speed flash equipments and their applications to color and monochrome. He produced - for the inspection of members many fine color transparencies made by this method, the exposure being 1/10,000 part of a second.

The Society held its first house exhibition on the evening of 8th August. The evening was made the occasion for the presentation of trophies won during the previous 12 months.

In welcoming visitors, among whom were members of the Commonwealth Bank Camera Club, Mr. Keast Burke ARPS, of Kodak, Messrs. Metcalfe and Jones ARPS, of the Photographic Society of New South Wales, and members of the Y.M.C.A. Group, Mr. Tunks, the President, remarked that the Society had just celebrated the second anniversary of its formation. To form a basis of comparison, early work was exhibited against members latest efforts.

Mr. Metcalfe commented on the exhibits, and gave constructive suggestions both for the benefit of members individually and for the progress of the Society as a hole.

Visitors were entertained at supper, after which Mr. Ern. Jones screened a number of color transparencies.

Since the last report of this Society went to press in the A.P.-R. two meetings and one field day have been held by the Club.

On September 26th, Mr. McMillan, with the aid of graphs, lectured on negative development and gave particular emphasis to the fallacy of attempting to treat successfully under-exposed negatives by any process.

During the period under review competitions embracing “Moods of Nature” and “Pattern and Texture” were held. The former contest was won by Mr. J. Free and the latter by Mr. D, Orton.

The outing held on October 3rd was well attended by members and the results are anticipated with interest, particularly in regard to coming competitions.

Fortnightly meetings of this Society continue to attract many members, and with the growth of the organization the Council is now considering the advisability of holding separate meetings for demonstrations. This would enable the usual meeting night to be given over to competitions and lectures, which do not entail the use of any special apparatus, and may eventually lead to the Society meeting every Monday instead of alternately as at present.

The last outing was held on 20th November, and consisted of a day’s launch cruise on the harbour. The attendance (30 members) was most encouraging to the organizers, Messrs. E. Jones and J. Free.

Competition points to date are as follows;
A GRADE: K. Warland, 11; J. Free, 25; D. Orton, 10.
B GRADE: G. Geeves, 50; E. Jones, 40; E. Ashley, 32.

The sympathy of all members of the Society goes to club member Arthur Hadley, who is undergoing treatment at Yaralla Military Hospital for injuries received whilst a P.O.W. in Burma.

Among the announcements made by the President of the St. George Photographic Society at the last meeting, held in the Rockdale Clubrooms on 2rd April, was an intimation to members that their committee had at last achieved some measure of success in their efforts to obtain premises for the unrestricted use of members as darkrooms and a studio. Further negotiations will be necessary before the premises in question are obtained, but no hitch is expected in the final negotiations.

The main item on the agenda was an interesting demonstration of Composite Printing given by Mr. Butt, of Kodak Ltd. As members have already had demonstrations by Mr. Butt, the mention of his name was sufficient to ensure a large attendance. The lecture terminated in successful attempts by members at handling the work demonstrated by the lecturer.

The meeting concluded in the judgment of the open competition. A GRADE was won by Mr. L. White; second and third places (equal) were obtained by Mr. Barnes. Mr. N. Brooks was the successful exhibitor in B GRADE.

Practical photography under artificial light has been to the forefront very much. The meeting on 20th March was given over to this subject. Three young ladies were good enough to give their services as models, with the result that three separate lighting sets were working simultaneously.

On 13th April members were entertained by the Commonwealth Bank Camera Club at the latter’s clubrooms in the Head Office of the Commonwealth Bank, Sydney. The occasion marked the third anniversary of the formation of the Club, and the presence of the St. George Group constituted a return visit for one given in December last year, Hope was expressed that a common interest will bring about closer co-operation between the two bodies.

The syllabus for the last month included a demonstration of portrait lighting by Mr. K. Warland and the conducting of a seascape competition, which was won by Mr. Orton (A GRADE) and Mr, Buchan (B GRADE). Mr. Mclnnes was successful in winning the set negative competition. Re-allocation of the Alderson Cup in June has given added momentum to competition entries, the point-score position at present being: G. Geeves 67, E. Jones 53, J, Free 49.

Activities for the month ended with an outing to The Oaks, five cars taking members through slippery, mud-soaked tracks in search for pictures.

Competition year of the Society concluded on 19th June, when final results for the previous twelve months were decided, Mr. J. Free was the winner in A GRADE, and B GRADE honors went to Mr. E. Jones. Set Negative Competition was won by Mr. G. Geeves. The prize awarded to the most improved worker for the year went to Mr. Jones.

The meeting on 3rd July opened the competitions for the ensuing year. The large number of prints submitted was judged by Mr. Nasmyth, who had previously addressed the meeting by speaking on different toning processes. Mr. Nasmyth touched on many points and outlined various processes, and gave practical demonstrations as to what can be achieved by the discriminate use of various toning methods.

During September, portrait and character studies under artificial light took precedence over other branches of photography.

On September 11th the meeting broke into three sections, each member being allotted a model. By a system of rotation, each member was enabled to approach the problem of artificial lighting for models of diverse characteristics.

The outcome of the evening proved highly successful as, at the following meeting, photographs made on the practical portrait evening won awards in the portrait competition, A GRADE going to Mr. W. Davies and B GRADE to Mr. V. Marr.

Mr. G. Robertson, of Kodak, addressed the meeting held on 9th October. His subject was composition, and before an interested audience he demonstrated the salient points of his lecture by an analysis of works by contemporary photographers.

During recent weeks the Society has been particularly fortunate in obtaining the services of Mr. R. Nasmyth and Dr. A. E. F. Chaffer, who spoke on the evenings of 16th April and 14th May respectively.

Mr. Nasmyth, though working under restricted conditions, gave an admirable demonstration of brom-etching, using the potassium permanganate cutter in place of the more widely known ferricyanide or Farmer’s Reducer process.

Dr. Chaffer’s evening took the form of a talk on photographic optics, and with the use of diagrams demonstrated the difference between the simple meniscus lens and the larger and more expensive objectives consisting of four or more components. He concluded his lecture by demonstrating how photographers could improve their work by making wider use of the hyper-focal distance, and gave the formula by which this could be ascertained for any type of lens.

Dr. Chaffer then kindly consented to judge the open competition, and gave the A GRADE award to Mr. Orton and the B GRADE to Mr. Buchan.

First of the competitions for the ensuing twelve months opened on 9th June, and was won by Mr. J. James, the subject being “Centre Jour”.

Members received a thorough insight into the art of making character and portrait studies on 25th June when Mr. John Hearder FRPS, gave a practical demonstration, and revealed to his listeners the ease with which first-class work can be done with simple equipment. Using only two photofloods augmented by a spotlight, Mr. Hearder gave an exhibition of lighting his model and background — a procedure which, if studied thoroughly, must lead to a marked improvement in the work of those present.

Congratulations of all members go to Mr. Dave Orton who, in a recent Australia-wide exhibition sponsored by the Sunraysia Camera Club, held at Mildura, won the bronze medallion. Mr. J. James also received honorable mention in the same exhibition.

Recent activities of the society included a color competition judged by Dr. A.E.F. Chaffer, who spoke on each transparency as it was projected. Dr. Chaffer’s criticism was most useful and constructive, and included many hints whereby pitfalls in color work may be avoided.

The monthly monochrome competition set subject was “Central Railway Station”.
A GRADE: 1st Mr. W. Davies.
B GRADE: 1st Mr. R.J. McMillan Jnr.

During the same evening, Mr. Cyril Jackson showed his interesting and entertaining one-man exhibition.

Mr. A. Bower received a Certificate of Merit for a high-key portrait in the Inter-Club Competition held recently.

A large number of members paid a visit to Mr. Williamson’s commercial studio on October 12th and were very impressed by the working arrangements of studio and darkroom.

A general discussion of arrangements for various outings occupied the evening of October 26th.

The competition, People at Work, brought forth no A GRADE prints, and the results in B GRADE were: 1, Mr. A. Bower; 2, Mr. A. Bower; 3, Miss H. Sinclair.

The night of November 9th was devoted to pictures around the city and harbour, and the meeting was well attended. On November 23rd, Mr. Tolhurst judged the Portrait Competition and his remarks and advice were apt and to the point.

The results were:
A GRADE: 1, K. Ryan; 2, K. Ryan.
B GRADE: 1, A. Bower; 2, C. Walker; 3, A. Bower.

The prize for the Best Print of the Night was won by A. Bower.

Mr. B. Townsend, of the Kodak Lecture Division, forwarded a collection of slides on "Outdoor Photography at Night”.

The Annual Christmas Party and Presentation of Awards for the year’s work was held on November 30th. Color slides by the members were shown first; then the awards were made. Messrs. Davies and E. Jones were equal for the A GRADE and received a second-timing clock. K. Ryan received the B GRADE award of a book of photographic interest. He also won the Alderson Cup for the highest points of the year. A good selection of movies was then screened.

The color slides were shown at the December 7th meeting and a written commentary was read from Mr. Gale, who had judged the slides. The results were: 1, Mrs. H. Sinclair; 2, J. Viness; 3, C. Walker.

As arranged for February 15th, the members assembled at the clubrooms in Rockdale and proceeded by car to the city to photograph the Royal Tour illuminations. The prevailing wet weather proved to be a mixed blessing, keeping the spectators to a minimum, and adding much to the pictorial value of the various scenes. Later, when the members adjourned for light refreshments, it was agreed that the evening was a great success.

The Annual General Meeting was held on March 1st and the election of officers resulted: President, Mr. E. Jones; Vice-President, Mr. V. Marr; Hon. Secretary, Mr. C. Walker; Treasurer, Mr. K. Warland; Assistant Secretary, Mr. A. Bower; Publicity Officer, Mr. J.L. Jones; Committee, Messrs. J. Free, J.L. Jones, R. Challenger and Miss H. Sinclair.

Information regarding the Club activities, may be obtained from the President, Mr. E. Jones.

The Model Night on March 15th proved to be as popular as ever, with a good attendance of members, all of whom appeared to have at least one camera and tripod. Two sets of lights were provided for the two professional models who were engaged for the evening. Judging by the various lighting techniques employed, the members had learned from previous model nights and appeared to be striving for greater individuality.

On March 29th, a most interesting lecture was given by Mr. Nasmyth entitled Exposing the Negative. This was one of the most comprehensive, yet down-to-earth lectures delivered at the Society for some time. Mr. Nasmyth clearly explained the reason for negative contrast changing with development time. He later gave a demonstration to prove his previous statements, by photographing a subject which included both the light source and a dark object, both of which were well recorded on the negative, showing what can be done by proper exposure and development.

Mr. Nasmyth then judged the Landscape and/or Seascape competition, the results being:
A GRADE: 1, J.L. Jones; 2, K. Ryan; 3, K. Ryan.
B GRADE: 1, H. Minton; 2, B. Wall; 3, C. Walker.

The subject for April 12th was a Color Slide Exhibition by Members, and as usual with this popular subject, the meeting was well attended. Quite a wide variety of subject matter was submitted for projection, ranging from Nature Studies and Landscapes to Royal Tour Illuminations; the majority of the latter were taken on a recent night outing. Altogether there were quite a number of slides of very high standard, and judging from members comments, much useful data was gained.

On May 3rd, the Society was fortunate in having Mr. A.W.W. Gale to lecture on Composition and Print Finishing. Mr. Gale commenced by showing the various fundamental forms of construction; he then showed the changes that could be produced in these forms by perspective. The foregoing was then applied to a collection of very fine prints, when Mr. Gale pointed out the various forms contained in them, and demonstrated how they could be strengthened by suitable retouching with oil-color, which he deftly applied. The Society was most thankful to Mr. Gale for his capable handling of such a difficult subject.

There was to have been a lecture by Mr. W.G. Davies on May 10th, but, owing to illness, Mr. Davies could not attend. The meeting then took the form of an impromptu screening of members color slides and 8mm movies.

A lecture was given by Mr. A.R. Eade on May 24th, the subject being Enlarging. Mr. Eade gave a short description of the various processes involved, and followed up with a very complete demonstration, including such items as dodging with the aid of test strips in place of the usual guesswork. Mr. Eade then consented to judge the Competition, Child Study.

His placings were;
A GRADE: 2, E. Jones.
B GRADE: 1, H. Minton; 2, L. Jones; 3, L. Jones.

A Model Night was held on June 7th, and proved as popular as ever with a good attendance of members. It was interesting to note the increased number of members using color film compared with past model nights. However, this might have been due in part to the two very attractive professional models and ample lighting facilities provided. The members went home feeling they had spent a very successful evening.

A very interesting lecture on Composition was delivered on June 21st by Mr. John Clucas of the Kodak Lecture Service. This all-important subject was covered from a different angle, as not all the slides projected were the “finished article” but contained the whole of the negative area. Each of these was followed by slides suitably trimmed to improve the composition.

The lecturer then consented to judge the competition Action Shot, and the results were:
A GRADE: 1, J.L. Jones; 2, J.L. Jones.
B GRADE: 1, J.B. Wall; 2, H. Minton; 3, H. Minton.

Part I of a lecture entitled "Colorfacts" was presented by Mr. Townsend of Kodak Ltd. on July 5th. Due to the ever-increasing interest in color photography, the members had been looking forward to this lecture which proved to be very absorbing, since it covered everything from the Munsell system of color specification and reproduction of colors in reversal film, to the practical application of color photography.

On July 19th, Mr. B. Townsend of the Kodak Lecture Service presented Part II of the lecture Colourfacts. While the arrangement and presentation of this lecture was a lesson in itself, it answered many problems experienced by our color-workers. Any remaining problems were dealt with in a very capable manner by Mr. Townsend at the conclusion of the lecture. He then judged the open competition, the awards being:
B GRADE; 1, Miss H. Sinclair; 2, H. Minton; 3, Miss H. Sinclair.

It was decided at rather short notice to hold an outing on July 25th, and this was reasonably well attended. If the distance walked and general enthusiasm shown is any indication some good prints should result.

Instead of the usual meeting on August 22nd, a visit to Mr. John Hearder’s studio was a welcome change. Mr. Hearder gave a most interesting demonstration of Portrait Lighting with the aid of an attractive model. Several of the members recorded Mr. Hearder’s arrangements with their own cameras. This was rendered somewhat difficult by the large number of members present. The Society is indebted to Mr. Hearder for his very fine gesture, from which we feel we have benefited considerably.

On August 16th the Society was privileged to witness the demonstration by Mr. Dumpleton and his technical assistant of a revolutionary new type of movie projector. The new projector, which was a prototype, put up a good performance during the evening, when 8mm, 9.5mm and 16mm films were shown, all on the one machine, with optical sound on 9.5mm and 16mm. As the majority of members are technically minded, they were interested not only in the demonstration, but also in the machine itself.

A demonstration of Silk Screen Printing was given on August 30th by Mr. N. Thornton, who took us from the original artists drawing to the high contrast positive necessary for contact printing on the carbon tissues which he exposed and processed, Mr. Thornton then demonstrated the method of applying the special lacquer to the screen to produce excellent reproductions of the original artist’s drawing.

September 7th was a most important occasion, for at this meeting the amalgamation of the Hurstville Camera Club with the St. George Photographic Society took place. After the initial formalities, election of officers was held, the results being: President, L. Richards; Vice-President, J. Free; Secretary, C. Walker; Assistant Secretary, H. Sinclair; Treasurer, I. McAuley; Committee, W. Davies, N. Books, B. Watkins, V. Marr.

With the amalgamation of these two active clubs, the St. George Photographic Society now has some eighty-odd financial members, and the use of very modern premises at the St. George Business Men’s Club, 18 Croft’s Avenue, Hurstville, a bright future is assured.

Meetings will be held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Visitors and intending members are welcome.

On September 21st a “Model Night” was held, and as usual on these nights the services of two professional models were obtained. With some of the more experienced members to assist with the arrangement of the lights, a very successful evening was had by all.

The lecture for October 7th, entitled “Character Study Make-up”, was presented by Mr. Cliff Noble, who commenced by displaying and describing the various items used in this very interesting branch of our hobby. Mr. Noble then chose one of the members to act as his model. He demonstrated the various facial changes which could be brought about by the application of a suitable grease-paint, and concluded by completing the make-up with the addition of whiskers and a very effective moustache, the result of Mr. Noble’s efforts being the transformation of an otherwise pleasant member into a rather sinister-looking character.

Mr. Noble judged the monthly competition, “Still Life and Table Top”, and the results were;
A GRADE: 1, W.G. Davies; 2, W.G. Davies; 3, W.G. Davies.
B GRADE: 1, M. Harvey; 2, M. Harvey; 3, J. Quinn.

After amalgamation with Hurstville Camera Club, the St. George Photographic Society
is one of the largest clubs in the Sydney metropolitan area.
Our picture shows part of the combined membership.

On October 19th, Mr. J. Hoey gave a lecture entitled “Exposure to Exhibition” which was quite up to his usual high standard. Commencing with the exposure of the negative to the printing and retouching of the final print.

After the lecture, which was much appreciated, Mr. Hoey judged the competition Child Study, the results being:
“A” GRADE: 1, N. Brooks; 2, (no award); 3, W. Davies.
“B” GRADE: 1, J. Quinn; 2, A. Thurston; 3, Helen Sinclair.

November 2nd saw a most absorbing “Demonstration of Equipment” by Mr. Newhouse, who brought along an enviable array of the latest equipment.
