SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
The Club prior to 1946 was known as the Sunraysia Cine and Photographic Club, but on return of many members from the forces and general reformation of the Club it was decided to change the name to that of the Sunraysia Camera Club, this title being more concise and to the point.

Contact with the Club by visitors to this district may be secured through the Hon.Secretary, R.J. Parsons, P.O. Box 36, Mildura, Victoria.

SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
The Club’s current syllabus has now been published, covering dates up to 1st August. Meetings are held at 10am on the first Sunday of the month in the foyer of the Ozone Theatre, Mildura, when any visitors and new members will be welcome.

A feature of the new competitions is the fact that Club Set Subject Contest is always scheduled for two months prior to the A.P.-R. Set Subjects of similar name; it is hoped in this manner to encourage members to enter the A.P.-R. contests. During August it is planned to hold the annual meeting and exhibition of prizewinning and salon prints.

SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
On the 7th and 8th May, this Club held its first post-war public exhibition, and the contributing factor to its success was the support given by the A.P.-R. and the following Clubs and Societies: Adelaide Camera Club, Griffith Camera Club, Photographic Society of New South Wales, Photographic Society of Victoria, Portland Camera Club, Wollongong Camera Club.

A well-known exhibitor was unable to contribute owing to unforeseen circumstances, and at a late date an appeal to the Editor was answered in the form of a large portfolio of prints, Australian and American, being sent to the Club.

The Club wishes to tender its thanks to the Editor for judging “A” and “B” Grade Open Contests and for rushing prints to Mildura so soon after an appeal had been made to him for some additional salon prints; also to kindred Clubs and Societies for the valuable and willing support so readily given. It is hoped that we can render as good a service to them at some future date.

Three Club competitions were conducted in conjunction with the Exhibition; Open “A” and “B” Grade, Typical Sunraysia Print, “B” Grade Child Studies.

Trophies were awarded by Messrs. A.J. Jenkins, F. Zaetta, and “The New Sunraysia Daily”.

The awards went to the following members;
“A” GRADE OPEN: L.G. Chandler (“The Cow Shed”);
“B” GRADE OPEN: E.J.R. Taylor (“Murray Sunset”);
TYPICAL SUNRAYSIA PRINT: E.J.R. Taylor (“Red Gum”);
“B” GRADE CHILD STUDY: L. Murphy (“The Clean Dirt”).

The public response to the Exhibition was good, and can be judged by the following remarks by two of the visitors. I quote: “You’ve got some corker snapshots here”, “That’ll lay a few of the local ‘snap-shotters’ in the aisles”.

The Mayor, Councilor A. J. Jenkins, opened the Exhibition and praised the general high quality of the work exhibited. Fluorescent lighting was installed by Mr. C.F. Russell, of Mildura, and the Sunraysia Camera Club strongly recommends the use of this type of lighting for any exhibition of photography. It brings out the very best in a print and is particularly comfortable for the eyes.

SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
The mid-monthly meeting for April was held on Thursday, 21st, with about twenty members present.

Our usual open competition was well patronized in each grade, the results being:
A GRADE: R. Parsons;
B GRADE: A. Stowe;
C GRADE: E. Ridding.

Later, some discussion took place on the “Queen of the Murray” contest, which was photographically covered by the club; this proved very enjoyable shooting.

Professional, Mr. F. Zaetta, was invited to our meeting and gave us a very interesting and somewhat amusing talk on portraiture, it has its lighter moments apparently. He is completely “sold” on view cameras; a certain expensive single lens reflex being “maybe alright for snaps!”

FRANK JENNER SHOWS HIS 16mm
KODACHROME RECORDS OF HIS NEW ZEALAND HOLIDAY TO
SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB MEMBERS.

Highlight of the evening was the projection of 50 Kodachrome transparencies from the Photographic Society of America, kindly loaned to us by the Editor, a gesture very much appreciated. Members were very impressed by the excellence of the slides, with the usual high praise going to Kodachrome. The P.S.A. collection ably embraces practically all subjects in photography, from landscape to flower study and from portraiture to still life.

Our latest information on Irvine Caldwell is that he is well settled in at Hamilton Hospital and is now endeavoring to start a Camera Club.

The visit from Mr. Roper, of Broken Hill, was very enjoyable, we spent an evening at George Mansell’s home swapping ideas, technique, etc. Mr. Roper also is trying to establish a club in his home city.

Recent activities of the Club have included a portrait night by the members, and a lecture - demonstration on lighting by Mr. Frank Zaetta. His remarks were most enlightening.

During the Christmas break, some of the members were very fortunate in visiting our old friend Ed. Taylor, now of Geelong. A very pleasant day was spent. We hope to see Ed’s name in the A.P.-R. again very soon.

We also had a visit from I. Caldwell, of Hamilton. He has covered quite a lot of country since acquiring his new car, and he should have some very good shots for competition purposes.

We are planning to arrange an exchange of prints with the Sydney Y.M.C.A. Camera Circle and, if successful, should be a forerunner to many more.

Congratulations to G. Mansell on being promoted to A Grade.

We lost two members at the beginning of the year, Alan Stowe to Bathurst, and Ted Domeyer to Melbourne.

Now the tourist season is coming on us again, visitors to the district note that we meet on the 1st Sunday in the month at the Ozone Theatre at 10am, and the 3rd Thursday at St. Andrew’s Hall, Deakin Avenue, at 8 pm.

SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
On the 23rd of June we were fortunate in having a visit from our old club member Ed. Taylor, now of Geelong. This was an occasion for quite a celebration.

An increasing interest is being shown by members in the field of Kodachrome transparency photography, this subject filled portion of the program before the arrival of our guest speaker, Mr. N. Favaloro, a very well-known naturalist who has just returned from a trip to Macquarie Island. The subsequent lecture proved most interesting and informative, and we hope to hear more at a future date.

As part of the meeting, prints from the exchange portfolio from the Y.M.C.A. Sydney were on exhibition. This exchange has proved very satisfactory and the members here have gained much in the experience of technical and pictorial work.

The meeting held on the 1st of July was devoted solely to a discussion on this portfolio. The ensuing remarks proved most interesting and instructive.

We would heartily commend all clubs, especially those away from the main metropolitan areas, to arrange for the inter-club exchange of portfolios so as to give members an opportunity to see the work of others. Our first exchange has already given members a renewed interest and fresh outlook.

SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
The August activities commenced with a 23-mile outing up the Darling River. The weather held good and the day proved an outstanding success.

On Thursday 17th August, the annual meeting was held, the following members being elected for office: President, J. Webster; Vice-President, G. Mansell; Hon. Secretary, R. Pugsley; Hon. Assist. Secretary, B. Koslowski; Hon. Treasurer, A. Garde.

The Annual Dinner was held at the Grand Hotel on Friday 25th; this occasion marked the giving and receiving of the awards for the past club year.

Unfortunately, the prints are still somewhere in N.S.W. and to date our Judges for this occasion, L. and M. Lyons, have not received them. Maybe we shall have another dinner!

The Club has been fairly active of late. Following on the Darling River outing, we toured to Hattah some weeks ago. The lakes of the region were really recorded, as were some of the trees, the daisy-covered fields and sand dunes, which abound everywhere. Though the weather was not ideal, the clouds parted for several hours allowing good lighting conditions.

Results of the Club’s annual “Picture of the Year” competition were J. Schliefert’s “Requiem" first, and E. Lawton’s “Hollyhock” second. “Requiem also gained first in the Club’s exhibit competition at the Mildura Show recently; (Remember it gained First in Class B, Open for September, with the A.P.-R., too.); Second prize at the Show was “Industrial Pattern” (also an A.P.-R. winner) by R.J. Pugsley. Third was E. Lawton’s “Hooked” — a fishing study. Mr. F. Cole, of Adelaide, was the judge.

The club held its Annual General Meeting on August 16th, which resulted in a change of office-bearers. The new executive committee now consists of George Mansell (President), Jim Dickson (Vice-President), Gordon Stott (Hon.Secretary), Edwin Lawton (Assist. Secretary) and Basil Kozlowski (Treasurer). The new secretary is Gordon Stott, his address being 120 Thirteenth Street, Mildura.

The annual dinner was held at the Grand Hotel, Mildura, on Thursday, 30th of August. Color films of his recent trip into the Northern Territory were shown by Mr. F. Jenner. He will shortly be visiting Western Australia, so members are hoping that this journey will produce more fine work.

The result of the Doug. Jenkins Memorial Trophy was announced at the dinner, the winner for this year being J. Crosbie, of Merbein, for his fine tree study.

The executive committee has drawn up a program for the next twelve months, the object being to create as much interest in the club as possible, with the activities being both instructional and entertaining.

On the recreational side, Mr. Len Murphy has the task of arranging the club outings. With these purposes in mind, the committee is looking forward to an interesting and progressive year.

A photographic exhibition was held by the Club in conjunction with the Mildura District and Returned Servicemen’s Agricultural and Horticultural Show for 1951.

The exhibition created considerable interest among the 24,000 people who visited the show over the two day period, Friday and Saturday, October 19th and 20th.

The competitive section was judged by J.P. Carney ARPS, APSA, of Griffith NSW, who commented, “A well presented exhibition”. He awarded First Prize and Medallion to J.M. Joshua, of Temora, NSW, for “Give Us This Day”, a very fine rural study. Second Prize and Medallion went to D. Orton, of Rockdale, NSW, for his child study.

There were five Awards of Merit: R.J. Parsons, R.J. Parsons, C.S. Christian, D.H. Featherstone, and J. James.

AT MILDURA SHOW
SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB

The Sunraysia Camera Club wishes to thank all competitors for helping to make the show a success. This would not have been so without the support of other clubs and entries from other States.

We also extend very special thanks to Kodak Ltd. for the loan of an appealing selection of A.P.-R. prize-winners prints, which made up the greater part of the non-competitive section.

This was a very successful show generally, but it also indicated how necessary it is for photographic societies to support each others exhibitions. This is more particularly so in country centers where camera enthusiasts are limited in number.

SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
The club has suffered a tragic loss in the accidental death on May 16th, of Andrew Garde, one of our most popular members. His passing is mourned by all who knew him.

Recent club meetings have dealt in considerable detail with the possibility of running an exhibition in conjunction with the local agricultural show society. But it was decided that the Club’s finances would not permit of this for the time being, at least. However, we understand that the show society will be conducting a photographic section on similar lines to Wentworth and Barmera shows.

We have recently been visited by Mr. Harold Power of Melbourne Technical College Visual Education Department. In an informal chat he gave members an insight into the mechanism of a particularly fine turreted 16mm movie camera with which he was equipped.

The most recent pleasure to which we have been treated, was a movie night, held on our last Thursday meeting. Among the films shown was “The Photographer”, a film on the ideals and technique of Edward Weston. The film itself appealed on artistic and technical grounds, but the subject matter was even more interesting, as it showed the beautiful simplicity and strength of Weston’s technique at its best. He makes no enlargements. All his prints are 8" x 10" contacts, with the composing done in the camera. Needless to say, he has the choice of a battery of lenses to enable him to acquire just the field of view he desires. The film, which was loaned by courtesy of the United States Consulate, was forwarded to us by E. Domeyer.

The club has been fortunate in securing a private box at Mildura Post Office and would request that any correspondence be despatched to this address: The Hon. Secretary, Sunraysia Camera Club, Box 277, Mildura, Victoria.

The annual meeting of the Sunraysia Camera Club was held last month and election of office-bearers resulted: President, J. Dickson; Vice-President, L.J. Murphy; Secretary, G. Stott; Treasurer, B. Kozlowski; Equipment Secretary, R.J. Parsons; Press Correspondent, J. Crosbie. The annual dinner was held later in the month and the results of the Doug. Jenkins Memorial Trophy were announced.

The judging was accomplished by Mr. E. Robertson, of Adelaide, and the Silver Plaque was won by L.G. Chandler for his print “The Fishers,” which is reproduced below and was in the October 1952 A.P.-R., and the Bronze Plaque went to G. Stott. Presentation of the trophies was made by the retiring President, Mr. G.H. Mansell. The evening concluded with a talkie screening of “Sons of Matthew” by member F. Jenner.

A further highlight in our activities was a visit by Mr. Keast Burke, who stayed one night on his way from Adelaide to Melbourne. His screening of American and Australian color slides and a selection of Clarence B. Young’s color transparencies of life in New Guinea was greatly appreciated.

The opportunity was taken at this meeting to make a presentation to our popular secretary, Gordon Stott, on the eve of his approaching marriage. The presentation was made on behalf of the members by Mr. Burke. Good luck, Gordon! We hope your interest in photography will not wane and that subjects for your camera will increase as the years go on.

The Annual General Meeting of the club was held on 20th August, and the following office bearers were elected: President, R.J. Pugsley; Vice-President, R.N. Gryst; Secretary, G.L. Stott; Assistant Secretary and Print Steward, W.J. Webster; Treasurer, B.J. Kozlowski; Equipment Secretary, R.J. Parsons.

Our first outing of the year was a trip to an area on the Murray, downstream from Mildura, abounding in billabongs. It turned out to be quite a day.

We hope to have more outings this year, as it has been found the best method of collecting worthwhile material and strengthening club membership.

SUNRAYSIA CAMERA CLUB
On 19th August the Fourteenth Annual Meeting was held in St. Andrew’s Hall, and, as a matter of interest, though I doubt if at all legal, it was conducted on a tape recorder by the President, Mr. Pugsley, who happened to be away on holidays. All went well until Mr. Pugsley was re-elected. He did not anticipate that! Office-bearers are: President, Mr R.J. Pugsley; Vice-President, Mr. J. Webster; Hon.Secretary, Mr. G. Scott; Treasurer, Mr. B. Kozlowski.

It was decided to hold the Annual Dinner, also the screening of the Fifty Best Kodachromes and presentations, at the Merbein Hotel, where our foundation member Mr. R. Tonby played the role of 'mine host' The Print of the Year (The Doug. Jenkins Trophy) went to G. Mansell, and the Andrew Garde Trophy to Mr. G. Stott.

A new syllabus has been arranged for the year. Print competitions will be as set for the A.P.-R. except that they will close one month earlier. A good beginning was made when we exhibited at our first meeting a folio of prints from the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies, together with comments from Mr. Crouch and Mr. Broadhead made on a tape recorder. This method is the first of its kind we have had and we do hope to see more of this scheme. The prints were excellent and the comments equally so.
