BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The Ballarat Camera Club, recently formed, should prove an interesting body. As the rules are about to be drawn up, and as there are numerous amateur lady photographers in Ballarat, it is hoped that provision will be made for their initiation.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The inaugural meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held at Carter and Foord’s warehouse last evening. Mr. R. Radcliffe occupied the chair, and there were about 20 members present. The rules as drawn up were in the main agreed to, and it was decided to apply for a room for meeting at the Technical Art School, Sturt street. The chairman said he had seen the secretary of the school, and had been given to understand that it would be an easy matter to obtain accommodation. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the incoming committee, with a strong recommendation that quarters be found at the Art School if possible. It was decided that the club shall meet on the second Tuesday in the month, and the time and place of meeting next month will be advertised on the 11th July. The election of officers was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows - President, Rev. J.W. Griffiths (unopposed); vice-Presidents, Mr Geo. Reynolds and Mr. R. Radcliffe (unopposed); Hon.Secretary, Mr H.A.B. M'Kenzie (unopposed); hon. treasurer, Mr H. Foord (unopposed); committee (four to be elected, six nominations), Messrs Holland, Adair, England, and Nicholls. Accounts amounting to £1 5s 6d were passed for payment, and after Mr. T. Adam had kindly offered his services as lanternist at the next meeting, the gathering dispersed.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The second monthly meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held at the Technical Art School on Tuesday last, when a paper on "Landscape photography", and the fundamental principles of artistic composition, was given by Mr R. Radcliff, with illustrations. The winter competition pictures were then judged by Messrs. Reynolds and Figgis, the prize-winners being Messrs. M'Kenzie and Radcliff. As upwards of ten new members were elected at this, the first ordinary club night, the members are to be congratulated on such a promising debut. The next paper will deal with "The carbon process".

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held on Tuesday night at the Technical Art School rooms. A gratifying feature was the number of new members proposed, there having been 20 such as the last two meetings: The subject for the evening was the interesting lantern process, and a paper thereon was read by Mr W. England, who dealt chiefly with the principles involved and their application. A lucid explanation was given, and the subject further illustrated by numerous examples, showing faults to avoid as well as fine beauties of the process. At the close, a practical demonstration was given by Mr Adair, and a print developed before the members, many of whom knew nothing of the process, but expressed an intention, after seeing the results, to utilize such an artistic and simple printing method.

The annual meeting of the Ballarat Fine Art Public Gallery Association.

In July the Ballarat Camera Club was established, and obtained the use of the school’s dark room and a class room to hold its meetings in. This is another instance of the usefulness and advantage of the school to the general public.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
There was a large gathering of members of the Ballarat Camera Club at the meeting held on Tuesday evening, at the Technical Art School. The Rev. J.W. Griffiths occupied the chair. An interesting and instructive paper on “Instantaneous Work", was given by Mr R. Radcliffe. Lantern slides made by various members were shown by Mr T. Adam, who had charge of the lantern. The slides shown by Mr P. Shew were greatly admired, and a vote of thanks to him and Mr Adam brought a pleasant evening to a close.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The usual monthly meeting of the Northern Tasmanian Camera Club was held on Wednesday evening, the President (Mr. F.C. Birchall) in the chair. The hon. secretary announced that Dr. Morris Wilkinson was unavoidably compelled to postpone his illustrated lecture on Formosa. This announcement was received with regret by those present, who, however, expressed the hope that the doctor would be able to give the lecture at no distant date. In view of this postponement, Mr. Hill moved, and Mr. R. Gee jun., seconded "That on March 16th a developing evening be announced, the secretary to expose six plates on the same subject, and that they all be subjected to the action of different developers at the meeting". This was carried, and the opinion expressed that it would prove an interesting evening.

The secretary reported that, though he had both written and telegraphed, the exhibits sent to the exhibition of the Photographic Society of New South Wales in November last had not been returned. As several members intended sending their exhibits to Capetown, and these should have been forwarded by this time, some dissatisfaction was expressed. The matter was eventually left in the hands of the secretary till next meeting.

Schedules of the exhibition of the Ballarat Camera Club were handed round.

The remainder of the evening was devoted to judging a "holiday competition" for the best set of pictures taken during the holidays. There were two classes, (1) for whole plate pictures; and (2) for half-plate and under. The sets sent in were judged by the members present, and Mr. F. Styant-Browne was awarded a first-class club certificate in class 1 for a set taken at George Town and the River Nile, while Mr. A.H. Hill was awarded a first-class certificate in class 2 for a set of landscape and river view.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The first meeting of the Mount Gambier Photographic Club for the second year of its existence was held on Monday evening, under the direction of Mr. C. Newling, the President. The preliminary business included the election of a new member, the reading of correspondence, and the re-consideration of the question of the days of meeting. As regarded the last it was found that if the meetings are to be continued in the Institute Committee-room the only evening available to suit the majority of the members is Monday, and accordingly the decision of the annual meeting was not disturbed. The resignation of the auditor (Mr. R. Hutton) was received and accepted.

A prize-list of the first annual exhibition of the Ballarat Camera Club, to be held on May 10th, was received, and it is probable several Mount Gambier camerists may send exhibits.

The remainder of the evening was occupied with an interesting account by Mr. H. Hosking of his recent tour, with several companions, in Mr. W.H. Pascoe's steam yacht Irene, round the Victorian coast as far as Warrnambool and back. They visited Portland, Port Fairy and Warrnambool, and spent several days at each place, and Mr. Hosking showed a number of photographs of beautiful and interesting scenes taken at the ports. The story of the tour and the photographs which illustrated it afforded the members a very interesting hour.

The President and Mr. Underwood showed some very pretty cloud studies taken a few days ago at Port MacDonnell. Mr. Everitt's paper on "Lenses and their uses" was postponed till another evening.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The first annual exhibition of photographs in connection with the Ballarat Camera Club will be held in Christ Church Hall, Lydiard street, on Tuesday and Wednesday next, and promises to be very successful. Apart from the entries of all the leading local amateurs, a large number of pictures have been sent in for competition from other places in this State, and also from South Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania, and many of them are splendid examples of the photographic art. Each evening the lantern slides sent in for competition will be exhibited, and a musical program will be rendered, including selections on the pianola, which has been kindly lent for the occasion by Messrs Carter and Werner, who have also lent a large stereoscope, in which local views taken by Mr. E. Budge will be exhibited.

Thursday 12th May 1904  Page 6 - The Ballarat Star (Victoria)

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The Ballarat Camera Club exhibition, which closed last night, was an even greater success than the committee anticipated. Thanks largely to the liberality of the donors of prizes, the exhibition attracted a number of competitors from other parts of Victoria, and also from several of the other States, notably Tasmania. In all there were 257 pictures sent in for submission to the judges. A variety of printing processes were used in the various productions, and in most cases much artistic taste was shown in mounting the prints.

The classes in which there was the keenest competition were landscape, single-figure composition, and best set of six pictures. In the first of these classes the work was of a very high standard, and the winner, Mr A. V. Nicholls is to be congratulated on the distinction he has attained where so much good work was shown. Two examples were required from each competitor in landscape, and this proved the downfall of many of those competing, as in several cases the value of a very strong picture was minimized by the weakness of the print sent in with it. Apart from the prize pictures, some very good work was shown by Messrs Styant-Browne with A Country Road and Peaceful Eventide; R. Radcliff, J.H Lithgow, O. Coulson, J.A. Taylor, H.A.B. M‘Kenzie, and J. Hornby. In the single figure class, Mr E.C. Joshua's great picture, The Rigor of the Game, stands out as the finest picture in the room, and deservedly takes first in the class, and also secures the gold medal offered by Carter and Foord for the best picture in the exhibition. Other good pictures are A Barefoot Boy by Mr J.A. Taylor, and Old Age, by Mr T.H. Steward, of South Australia. The outdoor groups call for little comment, with the exception of Mr. H.A.B. M'Kenzie's Seven Little Australians, which is an excellently conceived and well executed picture. In the instantaneous class, Mr Radcliff's two exhibits are good examples of high-speed work, and the yachting pictures of Messrs A. Propsting, of Hobart, and D.S. Lord, of Geelong are very attractive.

The judges had a difficult task in making an award for the best set of six pictures, as most of the work sent in was particularly fine. Some of the sets contained one or two very good pictures, but the effect was weakened by others of not quite so good quality, and the judges finally decided that Mr Joshua’s set contained the greatest number of really good pictures, though he was close pressed by Mr Styant-Browne, of Tasmania. For an illustration of “In the Gloaming", Mr. M‘Kenzie takes first with a well-arranged study, and Mr Radcliff receives mention for a pleasing effect by the gum bichromate process. In enlargements a fair lot of pictures are shown, though the winning pair are well ahead of the others competing.

The lantern slides were not judged until the evening, but proved a very fine collection with a good variety of tone, and resulted in the prize being awarded to Mr. J. Glover of South Melbourne. Mr J.F. Holland is also deserving of great praise for his very original and cleverly dressed figure studies, his best picture being In Maiden Meditation. The club was fortunate in securing such competent judges as Messrs. Dearden, Figgis, and Martell, and is much indebted to them for their careful work, and also to those who assisted in the musical portion of each evening’s entertainment. Last night in addition to the competition lantern slides, a set of beautifully colored ones was shown. These were the work of Mr G.F. Shew and are undoubtedly some of the finest ever seen in Ballarat. The lantern was worked by Mr T. Adam. During the evening Messrs. Carter and Werner's pianola again played selections, and Mr Percy Rees sang Sunshine and Rain, Miss Octavia Rees acting as accompaniste. A set of 50 stereoscopic pictures by Mr. E. Budge was also shown, and were very much admired.

GORDON COLLEGE PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
The rapid advance made during the last few years in color photography was illustrated, to the members of the Gordon College Photographic Club on Friday night by Mr. Trowbridge, of Melbourne. He first practically demonstrated to the members the process of toning lantern slides, by using the copper toning bath, which enables the worker to obtain any variety of warm tones he should desire. Then, by the aid of the club's limelight lantern, Mr. Trowbridge showed on the screen a series of photographs taken by himself of fruits and flowers, all in their natural colors. The whole process of this most advanced type of photography was explained by the lecturer. The club had the privilege of being the first public body to see these slides. Many other slides of landscape, river scenery and other subjects taken in Australia were shown, including the winning set at the Ballarat Camera Club exhibition. A hearty vote of thanks, proposed by Mr. T. Lord, and seconded by Mr. Miller, was carried unanimously.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held at the club's rooms on Tuesday evening, a goodly number of members being present. Mr S.E. Figgis presided, in the absence of the President, Mr. R.G. Radcliff. After routine business, the syllabus of the evening was proceeded with and two prepared papers were read on "Bromides" and "Bromide Printing", by Messrs. J.A. Taylor and Gordon Montgomery. Both papers showed that the authors had carefully studied all details in preparation, and were practical in actual demonstration. Mr. H.A.B. Mackenzie gave a demonstration of bromide printing, which, together with the papers, was much appreciated. The subsequent discussion was evidence of the lively interest taken by the members in the subject of the evening.

PORTLAND PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
The first general meeting of the Portland Photographic Club was held on Thursday last, when 15 members were present. The President, Mr. Long, was unavoidably absent, and the chair was taken by Mr H.P. Bennett. The minutes were read and confirmed. A letter was received from the Hon.Secretary of the Ballarat Camera Club, stating they were pleased to hear a club had been started in Portland, and offering to give any assistance. The Ballarat Camera Club forwarded a schedule for their exhibition, and requested that some of Portland's members would compete, and promising to reciprocate when Portland held their exhibition. It is contemplated to hold the Portland competitions in conjunction with the P.S.A.C. spring show. A syllabus for the year was drawn up for presentation to the committee. The meeting then took the form of an explanation on cameras. Messrs. A.H. Andrews, H.P. Bennett, A.E. Taylor, M. Mabbitt and W. Carey all explained the uses of lens, diaphrams and the manipulation of different kinds of cameras. A very enjoyable and instructive evening was spent.

The monthly meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held at the rooms, Lydiard street, last evening. The President (Mr R.G. Radcliff) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. A large amount of routine business was transacted, including that pertaining to the annual exhibition in May next. In connection therewith Mr G. Montgomery was appointed exhibition secretary. The syllabus of the evening was the best developed negative of an unknown exposure, and the best resultant negative was adjudged by the judge. Mr. E. Figgis, as follows: Mr A. M'Kenzie, 1; Mr. R.G. Radcliff, 2; Mr J.F. Holland, 3.

A short paper was read by one of the members on photographic chemistry, and a conversational discussion by the members relating thereto ended a profitable evening. The next meeting will embrace amongst other business a competition for the lady members, "Child studies" being the selected test.

There was a good attendance of members and all enjoyed a most interesting lecture on Photography, with demonstrations, by Mr. Joshua, of Melbourne, whose subject, "Out of Door Photography", was so appropriate to the members of the club. The lecture was full of information to the amateur on landscape and composition.

A competition for Christmas postcards resulted in Mr H.A.B. M'Kenzie being adjudged the winner; Mr J. Hornby 2nd and 3rd, with Messrs. J.J. Holland and Gordon Montgomery highly commended.

The second annual exhibition of the Ballarat Camera Club, which is to be held at the Manchester Unity Hall, Grenville street, next Tuesday and Wednesday, promises to be even a greater success than that of last year. Many interstate exhibits have already arrived, and together with the work of amateurs in this State, will go to form one of the largest collections of artistic photographs to be seen in this State.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
ANNUAL EXHIBITION
The Second Annual exhibition of the Ballarat Camera Club was opened yesterday, and though, in point of numbers, it suffered badly through inclement weather, as a display of the work of members it had much to recommend it. Still it was hardly so good, even from that standpoint, as was last year's exhibition. Outdoor work is the most favored of the amateur. Figure studies are not their strong point, though there are several excellent displays of the kind, mostly from Melbourne. In landscape work the club had some really fine exhibits on view, and the whole of Victoria appears to have been ransacked to supply material for exhibits, although some of best have come from Ballarat itself. The pictures are well hung, some of them however, being rather too high for the spectators to appreciate their detail. As an all-round exhibition of amateur work it is well worth seeing, and doubtless the club will have a much larger public patronage to-day and this evening, then was the case yesterday.

The general arrangements were efficiently carried out by Mr. G. Montgomery and Mr. H.A.B. Mc'Kenzie, assisted by the following: President, Mr. R. Radcliff; Vice Presidents, Messrs. J.F. Holland and Jenkin; committee, Rev. J.W. Griffiths, Messrs. H. Adair, G. Montgomery, and A.V. Nicholls; auditor, Mr. Jas. Balicer; press correspondent, Mr. H. Fleay; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. H. Foord.

The judges were Messrs. J.C. Deardin, H.H. Smith, and F.J. Martell, and the following was the list of awards:

LANDSCAPE (two examples): 1st prize, gift of Kodak Company, G. Montgomery, 1; 2nd prize, gift of J. Scott, R. Radcliff; hon. mention, A.J. Campbell (Melbourne), and J. Hornby.

LANDSCAPE (two examples, open to ladies only): First prize, gift of J.F. Holland, Miss Agnes Thompson (Ascotvale); second prize, shutter, gift of Watson and Sons, Miss B. Arthur; hon. mention, Miss Marion Renfry (Melbourne).

FIGURE STUDIES (two examples): J.A. Taylor, 1; A.J. Campbell (Armadale), 2; hon. mention, J. Hornby.

OUTDOOR GROUP: M. Mabbit (Portland), 1; J.C. Fletcher, 2.

ENLARGEMENTS: Sydney Fox (Caulfield), 1; J. Hornby, 2; hon. mention, R.B. Arthur.

INSTANTANEOUS PICTURES: A. Propsting, (Hobart), 1; G. Montgomery, 2; hon. mention, Sydney Fox (Caulfield).

BEST COLLECTION OF FOUR PICTURES: G. Montgomery, 1; J.A. Campbell (Melbourne) 2; hon. mention, J.A. Taylor.

ILLUSTRATION OF MILTON'S LINES: "Now came still evening in the twilight grey. And in her sober livery all things clad”: D.H. Fox (East Malvern), 1; G. Montgomery (Ballarat), 2; hon. mention, Sydney Fox (Caulfield).

BEST PICTURE IN THE EXHIBITION: R. Radcliff, 1; hon. mention, J.A. Campbell (Melbourne).

In addition to the competitive work, Mr. J.F. Holland loaned some attractive sets of pictures, which attracted much attention. In the evening the Cremona Orchestra rendered an enjoyable program of music, and there was a lantern display of competitive slides of photo work by Mr. G.F. Shew. The exhibition will be continued this afternoon and evening.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The annual meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held on Tuesday evening in the Trades Hall, the retiring President, Mr R.G. Radcliff, in the chair. There was a fair number of members present.

The report for the past 12 months, presented by the secretary (Mr H.A.B. MacKenzie), showed that substantial progress had been made by the club, whilst the work of members generally had reached a high standard of excellence. Incidentally it was mentioned that two members of the club received the honor of having one of their pictures reproduced in the leading, photographic journal of the world. The treasurer’s report was equally satisfactory.

The elections for the various offices resulted as follows President, Mr G. Montgomery; Vice-Presidents, Mr. F.J. Martell and Mr. H. Adair; committee, Miss Ralph, Miss Eckberg, Mr. R.G. Radcliff and Mr. J. Hornby; Hon. Treasurer, Mr H. Foord; hon. auditor, Mr J. Balicer; hon. lanternist, Mr G. Montgomery; press correspondent, Mr J.L. Sugget; Hon.Secretary, Mr H.A.B. MacKenzie.

It was decided that in future the club should meet in one of the rooms at the School of Mines. After the business had been concluded a number of lantern slides forwarded by Messrs. Burrowes, Welcome, and Co., of Sydney, were shown, and these, with the remarks thereon, provided a pleasant night’s entertainment.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held in the club room, at the School of Mines, on Tuesday evening, under the presidency of Mr G. Montgomery. A most interesting syllabus for the ensuing six months was drawn up and approved by the meeting. The business of the evening was a lecture by Mr. R. Radcliff, “Beginners Difficulties". The lecturer dealt in an instructive manner with the difficulties usually experienced by beginners in the art and these were most lucidly explained by means of a camera. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held on Tuesday evening in the School of Mines. There was a fair attendance of members. Mr G. Montgomery occupying the chair. After the routine business had been disposed of, the subject on the syllabus, “Short Papers by Members", was entered upon. The first paper read was one by Mr. J. Taylor, upon "Trimming and Mounting”.

Mr. J. Hornby’s contribution was a most interesting one. Taking as the subject of his paper. "The construction of a Home Studio”, Mr Hornby showed the vast advantages possessed by those who had given this important part of photography their consideration.

The secretary, Mr. H.A.B. M'Kenzie, then read a paper, dealing with the treatment of over-exposed plates, and illustrated his remarks by showing several plates over-exposed, one to the extent of 3000 times.

The competition for the evening was "Views of Ballarat District", and as Mr A.B. Berry, of Berry, Anderson and Co., had presented five valuable prizes, a spirited, competition was the result. The award made by the judges. Messrs. Martell and E. Figgis, was as follows: 1, Mr G. Montgomery; 2, Mr H. Jenkin; 3, Mr J. Hodder; 4, Mr G. Montgomery and 5, Mr G. Montgomery.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The Ballarat Camera Club met in the club room at the School of Mines on Tuesday evening; the President (Mr G. Montgomery) being in the chair. It was decided to defer discussion relative to the annual exhibition until the next meeting. The item for the evening was "The platinum process", and the subject was introduced by Mr. Montgomery in an interesting paper. This was followed by a practical demonstration by the secretary (Mr H.A.B. M'Kenzie), which proved most instructive. The competition for the evening was “Snow Pictures", the winner being Mr. R.G. Radcliff, whilst Mr M'Kenzie took second place.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
There was a goodly muster of camera enthusiasts at the third annual meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club held at the School of Mines last night; the retiring President, Mr. G. Montgomery, being in the chair. The report showed that a steady advance had been made in the members work and it was mentioned that wherever the members had exhibited their work they had not on one occasion failed to carry off some of the leading prizes. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of nearly £3 which was considered very satisfactory. After an interesting paper on the new self-developing plate had been read by Mr. H.A.B. MacKenzie, the elections took place and resulted as follows:

President, Mr. H. Adair; vice-Presidents, Messrs. F.J. Martell and Hugh MacKenzie; committee; Messrs. R.G. Radcliff, J. Hornby, G. Hudson, and J. Gazzard; hon. treasurer, Mr. H. Foord; hon. auditor, Mr. J. Balicer; hon. lanternists, the President and secretary; hon. secretary, Mr. G. Montgomery. An exhibition of lantern slides brought a very pleasant evening to a close.

BALLARAT CAMERA CLUB
The monthly meeting of the Ballarat Camera Club was held on Wednesday evening last at the Technical Art School room. The president (Mr. G.H. Ballhausen), presided over a large attendance.

The item for the evening was a talk on "Photography at the Antarctic", by Mr. A. Hoadley, of the School of Mines staff who accompanied Dr. Mawson on his trip to the Antarctic. Mr. Hoadley illustrated his lecture by means of a map of the Antarctic and a large number of lantern slides made by one of the members of the club and the lecture proved most interesting and instructive. A vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer, on the motion of Messrs. Treweek and Verey, supported by Messrs. Pollard and A. Mackenzie. Mr. Hoadley, in responding, thanked the club for the great consideration shown to him by having the slides made for the lecture, which made his task easy and far more pleasant to all.
