A meeting was held in Gordon College on Thursday 10th January 1889 for the purpose of considering the desirability of forming an amateur photographic group or association and after the matter had been thoroughly discussed it was resolved to advertise a meeting of persons interested in photography and also send post cards to people known as Amateur Photographers.

Nine gentlemen attended the inaugural meeting and the 15th January edition of the Geelong Advertiser announced to Geelongs 23,000 population the formation of the Society. The Society’s first president was Mr H.C. Roebuck, a prominent Geelong personality, with the first secretary being Mr J.E. Bennett.

The Geelong Amateur Photographic Association met at the Gordon Technical College last evening. The principal business was the election of a committee for the ensuing year, the members chosen being Messrs. H.G. Roebuck, A.P. M'Millan and J. Hill. Mr. A. Young was elected librarian and custodian of the apparata of the association. At the conclusion of the formal business of the meeting the members were entertained with a number of experiments in bromide photographic printing by Mr. Roebuck. There are so far about a dozen names on the membership roll of the association and it is anticipated that this number will shortly be largely increased.

A meeting will be held at the Gordon College this evening, at 8pm, of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association.

Wednesday 5th February 1890  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

The members of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association held a meeting last evening in the Gordon Technical College, Mr. G.F. Link in the chair. The object of the meeting was to reorganize the association and place it on a proper working basis for the current year. It was resolved to reduce the annual subscription from £1 to 10s and to provide a "darkroom", fitted up with all the necessary apparatus and chemicals, for use by the members on alternate Tuesdays. The officers of the association, it was agreed, should comprise a president, Hon.Secretary and Hon.Treasurer and custodian of apparatus. The former position was unanimously conferred on Mr. H.G. Roebuck, whose services to the association were referred to in very commendatory terms. Mr. J.E. Bennett, also an energetic and useful member, was elected as Hon.Secretary and Hon.Treasurer and the office of custodian of apparatus was allotted to Mr. R. Hocking, an enthusiastic student of the photographic art. The officers were appointed as a committee to conduct the affairs of the association and report progress every quarter. They were also instructed to consider and submit to the next general meeting a code of amended rules. The following program of work for the next meeting of the association, to be held on the 18th February, was arranged: Instruction in developing with pyro-gallic acid, Mr. H.G. Roebuck; developing with oxalate (being the process universally adopted in Europe), Mr. A.C. Bartlett; the hydro-quinone process, Mr. J.E. Bennett. The work may be inspected by any person interested or desirous of joining the association and ladies are specially invited by the committee to be present.

Saturday 13th September 1890  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

This evening at the Gordon Technical College a lecture is to be delivered by Professor Spence, of the Melbourne University. The subject, "The Discovery of a New Eye", treats, we understand, of some remarkable discoveries which have recently been made in physiological science and will be illustrated by the aid of the fine lantern which has been kindly loaned to the college by the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association. Judging from this gentleman's contribution to a former series of winter lectures, a great treat is to be anticipated. The council have been very unfortunate lately, the lecturers announced for the last two Saturday evenings having failed to attend. Professor Tucker was unable to deliver his lecture owing to illness, while Mr. Down, who was to have lectured last Saturday, missed his train. It is not, however, anticipated that any such disappointment will be in store for those who attend at the college to-night. The admission is free.

The annual meeting of the members of the Geelong Photographic Association was held last evening in the Gordon College, Mr. R.C. Hocking in the chair.

ANNUAL REPORT
The annual report and balance-sheet were submitted by the Hon.Secretary. The total income for the year was £21 1s 3d and the expenditure £21 8s 1d, leaving a debit balance of £3 6s 10d. The debit was caused by the heavy expenditure in putting the dark room in workable order. The lantern fund balance-sheet showed the receipts to have been £10 I5s and the expenditure £20 19s 6d, leaving a debit balance of £10 4s 6d due to the treasurer. This debit the committee hoped would be cleared off during the current year, as the lanterns would be in great request. Attention was directed to the increase in the number of members from 8 to 24. Demonstrations had been given during the year by the following gentlemen Messrs. H.G. Roebuck, R.C. Hocking, A.C. Bartlett, J.E. Bennett and Dr. Deare and a lecture had been delivered by Mr. G.F. Link. A donation of £10 had been received from Mr. P. Russell, which was lying to the credit of the association, awaiting the decision of the members as to the manner of expending it. In conclusion the committee desired to impress upon the members the desirability of a more regular attendance at the demonstrations and urged greater efforts in inducing others to take up the study of photography. The report was adopted on the motion of Mr. Nicholson.

CHANGE OF NAME
On the motion of Mr. Bennett, seconded by Mr. Bartlett, it was decided to change the name of the association to the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, it being considered that there would be advantages in regard to reduced rates of railway traveling by the title being altered as above.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The following members were elected for the positions named: President, Mr. H.G. Roebuck (re-elected): Hon.Secretary, Mr. R.C. Hocking: custodian and treasurer, Mr. A. Purnell: committee, Messrs. W.A. Nicholson, A.C. Bartlett and J.E. Bennett: auditors (for 1890 balance-sheet), Messrs. A.C. Bartlett and A. Purnell.

ELECTION OF MEMBERS
Messrs. J.B. Westacott, B.A. and C. Porteous were unanimously elected members of the association. The meeting then terminated.

UNCLE TOM'S CABIN
To-night the public of Geelong will have an opportunity of hearing this ever popular story, in the form of an illustrated lecture by the Rev. Dr. Porter. Judging from the lecturer's previous efforts, there should be a crowded house to greet him, especially as he has consented to come down from Ballarat to assist in raising the financial condition of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association. The Rev. Dr. Porter has had a lengthy experience in some of the slave states and is well able to graphically describe the various incidents along the life history of Uncle Tom, which the rev. gentleman had made a special study. The members of the mentioned association will work the oxy-hydrogen lime light apparatus, through which a number of superior views of the chief points in the life of Uncle Tom will be shown.

UNCLE TOM'S CABIN
An entertainment was provided last evening in the Mechanics Institute by the Rev. Dr. Porter and the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, the former giving a lecture, entitled "Uncle Tom's Cabin", pictorial illustrations for which were furnished by a series of photographic lantern slides worked by members of the society. There was a large attendance of friends, most of whom frequently signified their appreciation of the views presented and of the remarks of the lecturer, who chose rather to give general information regarding the negro slaves of America, than particulars of the story by Harriet Beecher Stowe, presumably taking it for granted that his hearers were all acquainted with the book and that moralizing upon the vicissitudes in the chequered lives of the slave dealers victims, would be very acceptable. The kind and generous hearts and impulses of the negroes and the hardships entailed by the oft recurring separations of families of slaves, furnished the main threads of the story Dr. Porter weaved for his hearers and at its conclusion some very beautiful views of statuary were shown on the screen, the explanations for which, however, had to be left to the imagination or memory of the audience as the pictures silently appeared and mutely vanished, without leaving to the uninitiated the least clue to their identity, though their names could easily have been also put on the screen with them.

ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held in the college Wednesday evening, the president (Mr. H.G. Roebuck) in the chair. The following gentlemen were elected members: Messrs W.A. Hargreaves B.A. and B.C.E. Hammerton, J.H. Dardell, P. and J. Hutchinson. All the retiring officers were re-elected with Messrs Humble and Hammerton as auditors. The annual report and financial statement had been received and showed that good progress had been made. The members' subscriptions had nearly doubled themselves, being for the year 1891 £14 5s as against £7 5s for the previous year. The system of supplying members with photographic materials has not only proved convenient but beneficial to the funds. The fine bi-unial limelight lantern has been in good demand during the year and has proved a great source of enjoyment and profit to tho association. The charges made for hire of same has helped to reduce the debt on it, which amounts now to £14 10s and it is hoped that by the end of the present year there may be a credit balance to this account. The thanks of the association are due to Messrs Humble and Nicholson for their valuable gift of a magnificent gas retort, the gift being highly appreciated by members in view of the low state of the club's funds at present owing to the heavy outlay in connection with the lantern. The accommodation provided by the college council in the new buildings should arouse the enthusiasm of the members, the darkroom being splendidly fitted up with all the most modern improvements in connection with the treatment of the plates. It is proposed to obtain the services of Mr. Ludovico W. Hart, of the Working Men's College, Melbourne, to instruct the members, at as early a date as possible, so that advantage may be taken of the favorable season of the year for pursuing the studies of this interesting occupation. An exhibition of members' work is to be held in May next and it is to be hoped that all will work hard to make it a grand success and that it may be the means of adding to the members roll. The thanks of the club are also due to Mr. R.B. Mockridge for having kindly lent his gasometer and retort until they were able to procure these accessories to the lantern for themselves. It was resolved to meet again as soon as the club had definite information with reference to the appointment of the instructor.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The following members were elected for the positions named: President, Mr. H.G. Roebuck: Hon.Secretary, Mr. R.C. Hocking: custodian and treasurer, Mr. A. Purnell: committee, Messrs. W.A. Nicholson, A.C. Bartlett and J.E. Bennett: auditors, Messrs. Humble and Hammerton.

Monday 29th February 1892  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

A special meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held in the college on Friday last, the president, Mr H.G. Roebuck, in the chair, Mr G. Brinsmead was elected a member. It was decided to form a class and get Mr L. Hart, the lecturer on photography from the Working Men's College, Melbourne, to conduct it. The Hon.Secretary of the club (Mr R.C. Hocking) was instructed to get the names of intending students with the night that would best suit each and give the list to the Hon.Secretary of the College. The only nights upon which Mr Hart is available are Mondays and Tuesdays and the lessons, consisting of theory and practice, will last for two hours and will be held every alternate week. Twenty students are required and the majority have been secured. The president made a donation of his share in the lantern to the society. It was announced by the Hon.Secretary that a member of the club, Mr T.G. Moore, had secured the prize for animal photography given by the "Boy's Own Paper" (England) and open to the world. The members were highly delighted that one of their number should have secured such a coveted honor. It was agreed to reduce the amount of ladies subscriptions from 10s to 5s per annum and to allow ladies of members' families to become members for the nominal charge of 2s 6d per year. A letter was received from the Gordon Sketching Club asking the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association to join with them in an exhibition they intend holding in June or July next. After a discussion it was decided to combine with the Sketching Club, so that a more attractive entertainment might be the result.

Wednesday 13th July 1892  Page 4 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

The members of the joint committee of the Gordon Sketching Club and the Geelong Photographic Association, met last Friday evening to make final arrangements for their approaching exhibition of work. It was decided to hold the exhibition in the lecture hall of the Gordon Technical College on Wednesday 31st August and Thursday 1st September next and the Hon.Secretary was instructed to write to the council of the college to obtain the necessary permission. The hours of opening and closing were fixed from 2pm until 5pm and from 7.30pm, until 10pm of each day. The prices of admission to be one shilling and sixpence for season and one shilling for single tickets. Members of the societies and students at the college will get the season tickets at a reduction of sixpence. During the afternoon the public will have the opportunity of judging for themselves the progress made by the members of both societies in their somewhat different departments of art and to those who are by nature gifted with a little insight into things, the value of these societies will become very evident. The evenings will be rendered additionally attractive by a series of beautiful limelight views of a varied and pleasing nature and an excellent program by some of our leading musical artists. The decorating of the hall and the arrangements of the exhibits are in the hands of a few ladies and gentlemen of notable artistic ability, so that altogether this exhibition and concert may be confidently looked forward to as a thoroughly refined and enjoyable treat for both eye and ear.

Thursday 1st September 1892  Page 3 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

The first public exhibition of local art under the auspices of the Gordon Sketching Club and Art Society and the Geelong Photographic Association, is of a very creditable character indeed and the public will certainly be disappointed if it is not made an annual affair. The exhibition is being held at the Gordon College and was thrown open for public inspection at two o'clock yesterday afternoon. It was patronized to an encouraging extent during the afternoon, but in the evening the attendance of visitors was so numerous that locomotion was difficult and the inspection of the pictures was not conducted under the most favorable circumstances. Those who desire to bestow more than a cursory examination upon the exhibits should avail themselves of the opportunity in the afternoon, when the light is more favorable and the promenade less restricted. Altogether 93 pictures have been hung, about 40 of which are intended for exhibition only. A fair percentage of the work entered for competition is very good indeed and the Sketching Club may certainly claim thus early in its existence to have achieved gratifying success in its mission to encourage and advance local original talent. Landscape paintings from nature predominate in the exhibition. Of these eight are from the brush of Miss C. Cole, a most industrious disciple of art, whose taste for the poetic is betrayed by the appropriate titles of her pictures. Miss L.H. Davey, whose work has on previous occasions been favorably brought under notice, exhibits some meritorious views of interesting bits of scenery about Geelong. Coastal scenery seems to be the favorite study of Miss Joyce. Seascapes are shown by Miss Ewart and Lynch's Anakie Gorge is the subject of a creditable exhibit contributed by Mr. A. Ramage. The only landscape views in black and white are those shown by Messrs. W. M'Rorie and M. Gough and they are worthy of more than passing notice. In the section for elementary landscapes four exhibits are contributed by Mrs. F.N. Cooper, the best of which are those depicting Anglesea River scenery from two aspects. The majority of the exhibits in the competitive class for figure drawing are shown by Miss Grieve. An interesting pastel drawing in the same class is exhibited by Mr. A. Ramage and a fanciful sketch in charcoal is entered by Miss Joyce. Some of the studies in still life and flowers are of considerable merit. One of the most natural is the picture shown by Mr. M. Gough, representing a plump looking teal. The "Last of the Roses", by Miss Cole, is a very pretty piece of work and was much admired. Some of the studies placed on view by Miss Joyce and Miss Wright in the same class have considerable merit. Mr. E.M. Blake has the field to himself in the architectural class and he is worthily represented by six water color drawings. Of course the best of the pictures are to be found among those placed on exhibition only. Everyone admires the exquisite skill shown by Mr. J.W. Sayer in transferring to canvas the pretty bit of scenery below Buckley's Falls, in which the paper mills form a conspicuous object. The picture represents the scene as it would appear under the softened light of the declining autumn day. The blending of shade is perfect and the dark, still water mirrored beneath the frowning mass of rock on the western side is shown in the most natural manner possible. The mill buildings, which in the full glare of noonday arc rugged and prosy looking, lose their hardness of outline in the deepening gloom and are mellowed in sympathy with the surrounding scene. The view of the Barwon from Prince's bridge, by the same gentleman, is also worthy of special notice. Miss H. Peters has loaned seven oil paintings to the collection for exhibition only, including landscapes, flowers and studies in still life. They are all excellent specimens of art work and the study of a spray of roses in a glass is among the best to be seen in the exhibition. "Where the rude axe was never heard", is the subject of a very pretty forest scene by Miss C. Cole. Sylvan scenes, located chiefly in the Dandenong ranges, form the subject of meritorious work by Miss L.J. Davey whose exhibits attracted much attention. Two excellent pictures, one representing a scene on the Barwon, are shown by Mr. H. Hayward. Three exhibits, indicating promise of better things, are shown by Miss V. Ramage. In addition to her other exhibits Miss Peters shows several capital charcoal studies. The photographic section of the exhibition is very largely contributed to by the members of the association and on the whole it would be difficult to find a better collection of amateur work. The enlargements are very good and the art work forms an attractive feature of the exhibits. Landscape and animal photography are also well represented and the ordinary visitors are interested by the exhibition of negatives and lantern slides.

The results of the competition in the art section are as under:
Class 1 - Landscape from Nature: Miss Cole (On the Wallaby), 1; Miss L.H. Davey (View on Spring Creek-road), 2.
Class 2 - Black and White Landscape: Mr. W. M'Rorie (On the Barwon), 1.
Class 4 - Figure drawing: A. Ramage, study of a model, 1; "Yellow Haired Laddie", by same competitor, 2.
Class 6 - Still life, flowers, etc. : Miss C. Cole (Last Roses), 1: Mr. M. Gough (Still life), 2; Miss Joyce (Pomegranates), 3.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
The first practical meeting for the year of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held in the college last Friday evening. There was a good attendance of members and a demonstration on "Gelatina-chloride printing on paper" was given by Mr. G.H. Brinsmead. The members brought a number of untoned prints with them and Mr. Brinsmead showed how they could be toned and fixed so as to procure fully the excellent results obtainable from the new paper and some really good work was turned out to the satisfaction of all present. At the next meeting members have to bring one print each finished in every way and the best will be chosen by ballot. There are also several new members to be elected the same evening and a full attendance of members is particularly requested.

The smoke social, which was postponed owing to other engagements, it was decided should be held on the 14th July, when the new session will be opened. After passing sundry accounts the meeting adjourned.

Last evening the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association held their second smoke social in the large lecture room at the college in Fenwick-street. It was numerously attended by the members, who had the privilege of introducing several friends and three very pleasant hours were passed, the reunion proving one of a most attractive character. The excellent photographic work of the association, framed, in books, on cards and in carte de visite form, occupied several of the tables and it proved highly interesting, not only to the various amateur photographers, but to the visitors, who were surprised at its excellence and delighted with the exhibition of photographic art. The pictures were not alone pleasing to the eye, many of them were reproductions of scenery familiar to excursionists and travelers, whilst a number of them were of a sufficiently meritorious character as to create a desire for travel to view the sights depicted. The advanced members were unremitting in their attention to visitors and in a kindly way explained the use of the camera and the enlarging lantern, which enlarges pictures from a quarter plate negative to 6ft. square if required. Parlor games with cards, halma, bagatelle, rope quoits and chess furnished means of enjoyment and during the evening light refreshments were supplied to the numerous, company. A humorous recitation was given by Mr Waierter and songs by Messrs F.W.D. Moore, Percival, Hocking, Hutton and T.G. Moore and by means of a powerful lantern photographic slides were shown by members of the association.

The monthly meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held on Friday evening. In the absence of the president Mr. J.B. Leitch occupied the chair and expressed pleasure at seeing such a large attendance of members. The Hon.Secretary (Mr. J. Hammerton) submitted a budget of correspondence and reported upon the meeting of delegates from the association with the College Council in reference to the exhibition to be held in the month of October. It was resolved that the association should make a special effort to produce a really good show of members work, as also all the latest novelties in the photographic world obtainable. With regard to the work being done for the Mechanics Institute bazaar Mr. T.G. Moore, representing the bazaar committee, desired to know the wishes of the association as to the disposal of the photos. After some discussion a very satisfactory arrangement was decided upon. The chairman was informed that one of the association's active members, Mr. Wm. Patterson, was about to leave for South Africa and when all present had contributed their quota of good wishes it was unanimously resolved that a letter signed by the officers of the association expressing regret at the loss of such a valuable member and serving as an introduction to kindred societies, be forwarded to Mr. Patterson. After the parting member had reciprocated in a suitable manner the members instead of adjourning (as is customary) to a light repast retired to the darkroom, where the subdued light of the ruby lantern served in a measure to hide their inward emotions and there they carried out the remainder of the business for the evening by the use of plate and developer.

A SHILLING BAZAAR
The bazaar which was opened in the Mechanics Hall last evening is one of a novel character in Geelong, the traffic in catching the nimble shilling being confined chiefly to the disposal of the goods in the various stalls on the art union principle.

The usual monthly meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held at the association's room last evening. Mr Hocking, vice-president, occupied the chair and there was a fair attendance. Arrangements were made for the exhibition to be held in October. After some discussion it was resolved to meet every Friday, to arrange the room and members are desired to forward their work at once. The association will be glad to receive a loan of old local photographs for the exhibition. It was resolved to get some photographic novelties for an evening set apart for them during the exhibition. First place for bromide work was awarded to Mr Hutton for a view at the You Yangs.

ART DECORATION AT FLEMINGTON
The privilege of inspecting and taking photographic views of the artistically decorated dining room set apart for the accommodation of His Excellency the Governor at the Flemington racecourse, was on Friday last accorded by the Hon.Secretary of the "Victoria Racing Club" to the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association in Geelong. Messrs T.G. Moore and Alex. Purnell were entrusted with the pleasurable work, which has been executed with great skill and a good idea of the magnificence of the apartment has been given by the eight panel and six whole-plate photographs taken of the interior of the room. The elegantly furnished dining chamber has been recently elaborately decorated, the eight panels of the walls each 10ft. by 2ft. being most artistically painted in oil colors, with every description of Australian wild flowers and the most delicate of foliage plants. The paintings are from the brush of Mrs. Rowan, whose artistic taste in a similar direction in the beautiful plates furnished by the "Town and Country Journal" is already well known. The colors of the flowers of Australian growth are faithfully portrayed in oils and the coloring decorations of the room all harmonize with the efforts of the painter, whilst the niches in the corners of the room are filled by beautiful Japanese vases standing 5ft in height. The lovely apartment with its decorative art has been reproduced by photographic skill of great excellence, by the amateur photographers from the Gordon College to the order of the committee of the "Victoria Racing Club" and the panelings as depicted by them have been forwarded to Baron Von Mueller, who will attach to them the botanical scientific names of the flowers and plants forming the pleasing subjects so beautifully painted at the Flemington course. In addition, the photographers secured some excellent views of the lawn, Maribyrnong grand stand and other interesting surroundings at the Flemington enclosure and their works will undoubtedly commend themselves. Mrs. Rowan, we understand, has been commissioned to decorate in oil paintings the ladies room at Menzies Hotel, Bourke street, Melbourne.

A neat little book in panel form, containing photographs printed in callotype, by Messrs. Sands and M'Dougall, of Melbourne, has just been issued and it will be distributed among distinguished visitors at the Melbourne Cup meeting of the "Victoria Racing Club", 1893 and will constitute a pleasing souvenir of the chief race gathering of Australia. The photographic panels represent the flora of tropical Australia, presented in the panel decorations in the Governor's room at the Flemington racecourse. The decorations have been painted by Mrs. F.C. Rowan and in the attractive little book the flora representations on the panels have been very kindly named by Baron Sir Ferdinand Von Mueller, K.C.M.G., M.D., F.R.G.S., Government botanist. The artistic panels were photographed by Messrs. T.G. Moore and Alex. Purnell, members of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association, from whose work the callotype representations have been pleasingly made.

A pleasant evening's entertainment was provided in the Sladen Hall, in Chilwell, last night, when a concert was given in connection with the Wilson Memorial Sunday school, which is worked under the supervision of the Geelong Presbytery. The Rev. A. Davidson occupied the chair and in the course of his opening remarks referred to the satisfactory progress made by the school under the superintendence of Mr J. Downie. All connected with the school were working earnestly for its advancement and it was pleasing to know that their efforts were not quite unfruitful. In the first part of the program songs were given by the Misses. M. Nicol and Sutherland and Mr Williams and Mr Baird recited "The newsboy's debt". A large number of views of local and other scenery were then shown with the aid of the Gordon College biunial lantern, worked by members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, to whom the officials of the school expressed their great indebtedness. The audience, especially the juvenile portion, appeared to be highly delighted at the excellent pictures. After the limelight views the concert program was continued and songs were given by the Misses Nicol and A. Maxwell and Messrs Ritch and T. Gibson and Mr. D. Brownlee recited "The curfew bell".

Last Friday evening the usual practice meeting of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association was held at the rooms and there was a large attendance of members. The evening was devoted to opal work for beginners, who were assisted by the senior members and some very good results were shown for the first time. The Hon.Secretary stated that all arrangements had been made for the 24th May annual picnic to be joined by the Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society and the ladies' social in the evening. The new retorts, which are made of copper, were shown to the members. They will save much time in working the lantern. After a most enjoyable evening the meeting adjourned.

Final arrangements were made last evening by the members of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association, in connection with the Gordon College, for the special excursion to be made to-day for practical work in the valley of the Moorabool river, near the pretty township of Batesford. In response to an invitation from the local association an intimation was received last evening from the Ballarat Amateur Photographic Association to the effect that six members of the goldfields society would take part in the excursion to Batesford and of that number two are lady exponents of the art of photography. Prior to leaving Geelong for the trip to the Moorabool an effort will be made by the photographers to obtain views at the local railway station of the entraining of the military people who are bound for Melbourne in order to take part in the Birthday review to be held in Albert Park. It was also agreed that a detachment of the photographers should be detailed off to take views of the muster and start at the Eastern baths at 11.30am of the Geelong, Ballarat and Melbourne harriers on their amateur run of six miles, also of the "line up" at Maud-street, near Swanston-street, for the final spin home and a view of the finish of the athletic contest. In the evening, at 7.30pm, a social entertainment of an attractive character is to be held in the lecture hall at Gordon College.

Monday 4th June 1894  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

A special meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held last Friday. Mr Hocking, vice-president, occupied the chair and there was a large attendance. Messrs Haines, Moore, Hocking, Purnell, Brinsmead and the Hon.Secretary were elected a committee to revise the rules of the association. It was decided to hold a concert in the college in aid of the funds of the association and to give a lantern lecture and concert in the hospital this month for the enjoyment of the inmates and Messrs Hocking, Moore, Dentry, Haines and Brinsmead were appointed to make all necessary arrangements. Correspondence was received from the Blue Book Company, London, asking for the members names, etc. and it was decided to send the required information. Seven prints were presented to the association by Mr Perry, of Melbourne, per Mr Miller and cloud effect prints, 18 in number, were received for the Baker and Rouse competition. At the next monthly meeting the advisability of holding an Inter-colonial exhibition will be considered.

Friday 22nd June 1894  Page 4 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

The members and friends of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association journeyed to the hospital on Wednesday evening last to give a musical and limelight entertainment to the inmates of the Benevolent Asylum. In anticipation of seeing something good the old folks sallied forth and took up their reserved seats in the new dining hall in which the concert took place. Mr. R.C. Hocking, vice-president, presided and the program consisted of vocal contributions by Messrs. W.G. and F. Galbraith, C. Dentry, R.C. Hocking, J. Smith, H. Stringer, G.H. Brinsmead and J.H. Harwood, the accompanists for the evening being Miss P. Johnstone and Mrs. Hocking. The musical part of the program was interspersed by limelight views, consisting of slides of different parts of the world, as well as a great many comic ones, including some of the old identities of the institution. The old folks seemed thoroughly to enjoy the evening's amusement and expressed the wish for another visit from the association before the winter is over. The company were greatly assisted in their efforts by the kindness of the officials and staff of the hospital, who did their utmost to promote the success of the entertainment, together with Messrs. Bartlett, Humble and Hammerton, who had charge of the lantern, Mr. W. Shaw for the use of conveyance and Mr. R. Mockridge for loan of slides. The proceedings were brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.

It is intimated that prize schedules and awards for amateur and professional classes and fuller information will be issued in a few weeks time, including rules and conditions for the guidance of exhibitors. Special prizes, which take the form of gold and silver medals and various apparatus, are announced in the amateur sections. The association would also be grateful for any offers of special prizes. The joint Hon.Secretaries are Messrs J. Hammerton, C.A. Haines and G.H. Brinsmead, from whom all information can be obtained.

Friday 26th October 1894  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

At a recent meeting of the Y.M.C.A. it was decided that on the night after their anniversary celebration, which is to be held on Tuesday 30th October, it would be a good thing to entertain the children of the Bethel and Mission schools together with other children, known to some of our Christian workers, to whom a tea and lantern entertainment would be a real treat. With this object in view, a few friends were called together to discuss the subject and it was resolved that it should take place in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Wednesday, 31st October. The lantern views are to be shown by members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association. Those present at the meeting were Mesdames Lewis, Robins, Middleton, Wilson, Misses Greenham, Vey, Rose and Messrs E. Orchard and H.T. Howard, each of whom will be pleased to receive contributions for the accomplishment of the object.

A grand Inter-colonial Photographic Exhibition and Congress is to be held in Geelong during Easter week of next year under the management of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association. The full programs for the interesting event have been distributed and they are engaging special attention by all interested in the progress of photography. The schedule includes special prizes by firms in England and America, chiefly gold and silver medals, for competition among classes reserved for all professional photographers in Australasia, as well as for amateur classes open to all amateurs in photography in the Australasian colonies.

The exhibits in the professional classes include portraiture, groups, special processes, colored portraiture, enlargements (opal or bromide), retouching, art compositions, illustrative, landscape and architecture.

The amateur classes include the following: Portraits not retouched, groups not retouched, retouching, landscape, seascape, yachting (instantaneous), architectural (exteriors and interiors), animals, stereoscopic, photos. obtained by artificial light, instantaneous photography other than marine, hand camera work, art pictures, enlargements, micrography, astronomical, photo. mechanical, special processes and lantern slides.

The carriage of exhibits from the various colonies visited by their steamers will be effected free of cost by Messrs Huddart, Parker and Co. and the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company. At the congress special papers or essays in regard to scientific photography will be read from the Government and other astronomers of renown in the various colonies and Mr Niven, of Ballarat, has promised to contribute book and scientific illustrations of photography.

Last evening the members of the Geelong Photographic Association held a smoke social in the Gordon College. The social was arranged as a complimentary entertainment to Mr. Alex. Cowie, who officiates as hon. correspondent of the association in London and who is on a visit to the colony. During the evening a large collection of views taken by the members in their excursions through the country and along the coast, was displayed on a screen with the aid of the society's large lantern. A couple of hours were very pleasantly passed in the meeting room and on behalf of the association Mr. J.B. Leitch cordially thanked Mr. Cowie for his valuable services abroad.

Monday 17th December 1894  Page 4 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

Last Friday evening the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association held their concluding series of meetings for the present year. They were chiefly engaged in packing and posting the complete prize schedules for the Inter-colonial Exhibition and Congress of Photography to be held in Geelong during Easter week in 1895. These schedules, it was intimated, could be procured on application at the Gordon College in Fenwick-street, or from any of the officers of the association. A vote of thanks, which was unanimously passed was ordered to be conveyed to Mr. William Gurr, M.L.A., through whose influence the Railway department had been induced to consent to the carriage by railway, free of charge, all exhibits sent to the Easter exhibition. A considerable part of the evening was passed by the members in viewing the various prints which were sent to Melbourne for the Baker and Rouse competition, Mr. G. H. Brinsmead being the winner, he having won the two rounds necessary Mr. Brinsmead is now entitled to the valuable trophy. Mr. J. Lindt, the judge for the competition, in awarding the prize remarked, "The print chosen as the winner in the batch submitted is all the more creditable, as the collection sent in shows marked improvement and progress generally". It was announced that several members of the association had made arrangements for spending the Christmas and New Year holidays in the picturesque district of Apollo Bay, where, no doubt, they would discover many choice pieces of landscape for their photo plates. It was decided to hold a competition for the best picture taken during the holidays and after wishing each other the compliments of the season the members dispersed.

Monday 21st January 1895  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

At a well attended meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association held on Friday evening, Mr R.C. Hocking in the chair, consideration was given to the arrangements for the exhibition and congress to be held at Easter. Correspondence was received from various firms, some of whom forwarded prizes and others intimated their intention of doing so. It was decided not to enforce rule 3, except in competitions for special prizes, as particularized. Owing to the removal of Mr Haines it was agreed that Mr Dentry should act as Hon.Secretary and it was further arranged that the association should meet every Friday.

The idea of the promoters is that an Inter-colonial congress should be held, each colony appointing delegates and that an annual exhibition be held in the several colonies in turn. Over 500 entries have been received at Geelong, these including about 2000 pictures. It is intended that congress meetings shall be held during Easter week, when lectures will be delivered and the various processes demonstrated.

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
Increased public interest is being taken in the inter-colonial exhibition of photography at the Gordon College, the attendance yesterday afternoon and evening being very encouraging. The congress meeting was opened by the vice-president (Mr R.C. Hocking), and was attended by ladies and gentlemen representing the Victorian Photographic Societies, as well as many of those of the neighboring colonies. A paper by Mr W.A. Boord, entitled "Cinderella", was read by Mr C. O. Dentry in the absence of the author. The writer treated his subject from an artistic standpoint, showing that photography is not a mere mechanical reproduction of natural scenes, but depends for its success largely on the artistic taste of its votaries. He showed that photography, formerly despised as a mechanical art by its elder sister painting, had forced its way forward till it had become recognized as a valuable adjunct to all artistic work. The paper was greatly admired, and the discussion which it evoked was particularly interesting. Mr G. F. Yeates, of Malvern, then gave an interesting demonstration on the intensification of negatives and positives, explaining his method by practical experiments. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to him at the conclusion of the meeting. In the evening a splendid collection of Tasmanian pictures were exhibited with the aid of the limelight by Mr. Yeates, the views of river, mountain and fern glades being exceptionally attractive. Vocal and instrumental selections given by ladies and gentlemen were also much appreciated. Special attractions will be presented this evening, but those who desire to examine the photographic views under the most favorable conditions should visit the exhibition during the day, and they will find that the time spent in doing so will pass very pleasantly.

Saturday 20th April 1895  Page 3 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

THE INTER-COLONIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
Owing no doubt to the approaching end of the Inter-colonial Photographic Exhibition, opened last Saturday afternoon, the attendance of visitors to the display yesterday afternoon and evening was exceedingly encouraging. It is to be regretted that the public have not responded as liberally as had been expected, but those who have not visited the exhibition will have the opportunity - the last one - of viewing the show to-day and this evening. It is unquestionably a splendid exhibition of photographic art in all its branches and to be appreciated must be closely inspected. As usual a conference was held yesterday afternoon, the meeting of those interested in the progress of photography being largely attended and the chair was occupied by Mr. J.B. Leitch, vice-president of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association.

An interesting paper entitled "Out of an amateur's note book", written by Mr. W.A. Hargreaves M.A., B.C.E., of the Brisbane Grammar School, was read by Mr. R.C. Hocking. It embraced a very pleasing variety of subjects affecting photography depicted in graphic language dealing generally with the art and to those versed in the study it proved highly instructive. At the conclusion of the paper a vote of thanks was passed to the essayist and the reader.

Those present at the Congress also passed a vote of thanks to Mr. R. Harvie, of the firm of Small and Co., of Melbourne, for the excellent assistance given by that gentleman to the council and delegates during the meetings and discussions which have taken place since last Saturday in connection with the exhibition.

Last evening's entertainment comprised vocal contributions by Mrs. Fennell and Messrs. F.W.D. Moore, F. Purnell, J. Keown and W.H. Percival and a recitation by Mr. E.D. Wilcox.

There was a most pleasing lantern slide exhibition of "Astronomical photography", including the sun, moon and stars, given by Mr. Sells of the Adelaide observatory. It was witnessed by a large and appreciative gathering of visitors, much interest being taken in the beautiful display.

The exhibition will be continued and closed to-day, winding up in the evening with a grand concert by local amateurs. Members of the Melbourne Exhibition trustees will visit Geelong to-day for the purpose of conferring with the executive committee of the Geelong Photographic Exhibition with the view of obtaining the removal of the photos to the metropolitan exhibition.

THE INTER-COLONIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
A visit was paid on Saturday afternoon to the photographic exhibition in the Gordon College, in Fenwick-street, by Messrs. Anderson, M.L.A., Bosisto and G.R. Fincham, trustees and Mr. Sherard, Hon.Secretary, of the Melbourne Exhibition. After closely inspecting the exhibits the visitors had an interview with the council of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association, under whose able management the First Inter-colonial Photographic Exhibition and Congress has been successfully held in this town. Mr. Bosisto spoke in terms of praise of the splendid exhibition of photographs and remarked that it was of an educational character to young people. He strongly advocated the removal of all the exhibits to the Melbourne Exhibition Building, where at present there is a photographic display and on behalf of the trustees he applied to the Geelong association to favor the Melbourne people with a view of the photographs. The request was supported quite as enthusiastically by Mr. Fincham, Mr. Anderson and Mr. Sherard, who stated that the trustees would have the artistic works kept in the Melbourne Exhibition for one month and that all expenses connected with transferring the Geelong display to the metropolis would be paid by the trustees. The council of the association afterwards held a meeting and gave the request careful consideration, it being finally resolved to comply with the application. It was decided to send a circular to the various exhibitors explaining the action taken and intimating that any exhibitor who disagreed with it could have his or her exhibit returned at once. In order that the exhibitors may have a guarantee that the exhibits forwarded to Geelong will be carefully looked after, it was resolved that all packing and unpacking should be performed by the members of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association.

Wednesday 24th April 1895  Page 4 - The Age (Melbourne, Vic.)

On Thursday afternoon next at the photographic exhibition, Mr. L.W. Hart F.R.M.S., will give a lecture on Photography, Its Educational Influence. The trustees have decided to continue tho photographic exhibition during May and hope to be able to arrange for the addition of the collection which has been got together by the Geelong Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association. The collection numbers 2000 exhibits from all parts of Australasia and should form a handsome addition to the present exhibition.

An interesting exhibition of photographic slides sent from the Ballarat Amateur Association was given last evening in the Gordon College, in Fenwick-street and it was witnessed by many of the members of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association. There were 60 exhibits of six slides, each displayed by means of the limelight lantern under the management of Messrs. G. Humble, J. Hammerton and W. Thacker. The object of the exhibition was to enable the appointed judges, Messrs. H.G. Roebuck, George Brinsmead and A. Purnell, to determine as to the merits of the photos, in competition for three prizes offered in connection with the photo. exhibition to be held in Ballarat on Thursday and Friday. The judges succeeded in making their awards, but the names of the successful exhibitors could not be ascertained. Very many of the subjects displayed were really excellent pictures and those who had the privilege of viewing them expressed their admiration of the works illustrated by means of the limelight.

A very interesting paper on bromide printing and enlarging was submitted on Friday evening by Mr R. Harvie, of Melbourne, to the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association at their annual meeting. The essayist, who illustrated his subjects dealt succinctly with the different plates suitable for the various descriptions of papers and by diagrams exhibited the several methods of testing the same. Pains were taken to vividly convey illustrations displaying the common faults of workers in using unsuitable papers for the negatives. Mr Harvie fully explained a splendid plan for making enlargements by daylight, the members of the association taking great interest in the methods depicted. During the course of his paper the lecturer exhibited about 40 prints, thus giving practical hints as to the processes to be adopted in bromide printing, all of which were greatly admired. Mr Harvie, at the conclusion of his paper, presented the association with a beautiful enlargement for display in the members room at Gordon College and two reference works for the library there. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer on the motion of Mr Leitch, vice-president of the association, who occupied the chair.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING
There was a very large attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, which was held in the College in Fenwick-street last Friday evening. The chair was occupied by Mr. H.G. Roebuck, president of the association and a large number of letters were read from different kindred societies and exhibitors at the Easter exhibition, relative to the progress generally of the photographic art. The report and balance-sheet submitted were considered to be of a satisfactory character, the financial statement showing that an amount of £176 odd had passed through the hands of the treasurer during the past twelve months, thus indicating the rapid strides made by the association since its inception. The report also referred to the late Inter-colonial exhibition held last Easter under the auspices of the association and although the affair just made the receipts balance with the expenditure still the exhibition proved a great success in the right direction, viz., of increasing the interest in photography throughout Australasia generally. The new syllabus for the ensuing six months, which includes many specially good items for the practical meetings of the association, was framed and adopted.

The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing twelve months: President, H.G. Roebuck (re-elected); vice-presidents, G.H. Brinsmead and J.B. Leitch; council, C.O. Dentry, A. Purnell, W.M. Waddell, J.F. Miller and A.E. Brately; Hon.Secretary, J. Hammerton (re-elected); Hon.Treasurer, W.H. Thacker; lantern engineers, G.H. Brinsmead, W.H. Humble, A.C. Bartlett and W. A very gratifying communication was received at the practice meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association on Friday evening, regarding the quality of the work exhibited at the recent Inter-colonial exhibition of photography. It was from the Ilford Co., well known to photographers, who were so delighted with the exhibits in the section for which their prizes were offered that they awarded extra medals. Several of the awards, it is pleasing to note, have come to Geelong, the following being the local prize-takers: Cabinet portraits, F. Monteath, gold medal; yachting, half plates, C.O. Dentry, silver medal; animals, G.H. Brinsmead, silver medal; instantaneous, G.H. Brinsmead, gold medal; Lantern plates, copying, G.H. Brinsmead, gold medal. In addition to the foregoing 24 gold and silver medals have been awarded to exhibitors in various parts of the colonies, which speaks well for the work exhibited at the first Inter-colonial exhibition. It was also reported that Mr Thomas Moore had been successful in winning the Australasian competition for best humorous picture.

TOWN COUNCIL COMMITTEES
Last evening a meeting of the Legislative committee of the Geelong Town Council was held in the council chamber.

A letter was read from the Railway Commissioners, suggesting that the corporation should provide framed photographs of views of Geelong for exhibition at the railway stations. The Geelong Amateur Photographic Association sent a letter stating that they would be willing to consult with the committee on the subject and Mr. H. Thacker submitted a handsomely framed group of photographs of views in Geelong and suburbs and offered to supply them at 17s 6d per each. On the motion of Cr Martin it was resolved not to take any action. Cr Appleton expressed disapproval of the decision and said that he would give £2 2s if other members would subscribe the remainder towards securing 20 copies of the framed, group of photographs submitted by Mr. Thacker.

A special meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held in the rooms on Friday evening. Mr Roebuck, president of the association occupied the chair and introduced Mr H.H. Baker, of Messrs. Watson and Son, Melbourne, who gave a most instructive and interesting lecture on "A natural photographic camera", the human eye being the ground work of his remarks which were illustrated by large diagrams and models of the eye. He explained all the various parts and gave numerous illustrations of defective eyesight and showed what an important part it takes in the happiness of the human race and compared it with the lens of the camera. The lecture was listened to with great interest, Mr Baker showing that he was master of the subject he had in hand. On the motion of Mr Dentry, seconded by Mr Wadelton, a vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer and the wish expressed by members to hear Mr Baker next session.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
About a dozen members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association connected with the Gordon Technical College assembled on Thursday evening at the meeting room and the president (Mr H.G. Roebuck) was in the chair. Mr. T. M'Kenzie was elected a new member of the club and a donation of £1 1s was received from the Geelong branch of the Fish Protection and Anglers Society towards the funds of the club. Mr J.H. Harvie, Hon.Secretary of the Victorian Amateur Photographic Association, was present and exhibited a number of stereoscopic transparent slides, the whole of which were admired and on behalf of the members of the association he represented gave a cordial invitation to any who cared to visit their club rooms. It was agreed that whole plate pictures be allowed to enter for the monthly competitions and it was decided that the next competition be for the best landscape and best instantaneous picture. An announcement was made that Mr. G.H. Brinsmead had secured the number of points for the best negative during the past month, with Messrs H.G. Roebuck and Waddell second and third respectively, while Mr Brinsmead also secured the prize for the best lantern slide. Other business of a less important description having been transacted, a smoke social was held as a fraternal compliment to Mr Andrew Cowie, a visitor to the colony and member of the club, who leaves for Scotland on Monday next. Eulogistic references were made to Mr Cowie by the president and several members, who all joined in wishing him a safe and pleasant trip home and expressed the hope that they would be able to see him amongst them again next year. The guest's health was proposed and in responding Mr Cowie stated that he was always pleased to be at their photographic assemblages and meet the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, who, he remarked, were amongst the most genial and courteous friends he had ever made. He did a great deal of traveling in different parts of the world and he did not know of a club in existence that showed so much enthusiasm in photography and gave strangers so thorough a welcome; whilst at the same time they allowed the use of their dark-room, utensils, etc. It was not every club that would do so and when he returned to Scotland he would do his utmost to gain the latest information in the art of photography and place it at the disposal of the members of the club. Light refreshments were freely partaken of during the evening. The convivial meeting of enthusiasts in photography proved decidedly interesting and instructive.

It will interest many of the successful competitors at the Photographic Exhibition held last Easter in the Gordon Technical College, in Geelong, to know that the prizes offered by the Britannia Works Co., Ilford, England (photographic plate manufacturers) have arrived. The prizes, which were received yesterday by Mr. Hammerton jun., jeweller, of Little Ryrie-street, consist of 28 gold and 14 silver medals, valued at about £100 and these have been won by competitors residing in all of the colonies excepting West Australia. The medals are really handsome trophies and will no doubt be highly prized by the successful exhibitors of their photographic skill. The obverse side of the gold medals contains a figure of Britannia seated in the highly polished center holding in her right hand a laurel wreath and in her left a photo-camera complete. On one side of the figure, within a circle, there is a representation of a steamer hearing a flag with the word "Ilford" and to the left is a bust figure looking upwards in expectation of being crowned with the laurel wreath. The reverse side contains the neatly inscribed name of the winner encircled by a beautiful laurel wreath. The silver medals are exactly similar to the golden trophy, but the subjects represented are upon an enlarged scale. It is intended to exhibit the medals in Geelong prior to forwarding them to the winners. All information regarding the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association may be obtained from Mr. Hammerton, the Hon.Secretary, by persons desirous of enrolling themselves as members of the club for the new year.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
THE JENOLAN CAVES
The members and friends of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association assembled on Friday to hear a lecture by Mr. J.H. Harvey on the above subject and the capacity of the large clubroom was severely taxed to provide for the large audience. Mr. Harvey, who is the Hon.Secretary of the Amateur Photographic Society of Victoria, promised some time ago to relate to the local club his experiences in connection with a trip to this underground wonderland when away for his holidays. The lecturer conveyed his hearers in imagination from Sydney to the gorge in the Blue Mountains where the caves are situated and by the aid of the limelight lantern reproduced some of the views by the way. Arriving at the caves the modus operandi is described, whereby the visitor is introduced to some of the difficulties of the undertaking, although afterwards amply repaid. The camera being kept in operation from start to finish revealed the mysterious formation of stalactite and stalagmite at every turn; also the provision wisely made by the authorities to protect these unique productions of nature's handiwork from the vandalism of visitors. The excellent slides prepared by the lecturer showed in many instances how his party had to traverse the limited apertures connecting the caves in a kind of caterpillar movement and the frequent collisions with sharp stalactites unless their movements were subject to the greatest care. The dangers also of falling down some of the holes contributed somewhat to the excitement of the trip. One of the chief attractions of the caves were found in this way. One of a party who got off the regular track, to the horror of his friends, suddenly disappeared to a lower level and his rescue led to the discovery of one of the finest of the caves. The lecturer, in showing the remarkable and fantastic formations, described also the beautiful colorings found in many parts, notably the "shawls", which in form and coloring were very realistic. The crystal cities, however, was one of the most wonderful, having all the city walls, turrets, fortresses, building and spires seen in a distant view of a great city. The lecturer was accorded a well deserved vote of thanks upon concluding his very instructive lecture.

The monthly meeting of the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association held on Friday evening was presided over by the vice-president, Mr Geo. Brinsmead and the business transacted was of a varied and comprehensive character. The members were present in full force and Messrs A. Glover, E. Parkinson, E.D. Wilcox and E. Creer were duly elected. Over a dozen photographic journals were received and correspondence from English and foreign countries was considered. A motion by Mr Waddell respecting the allowance of members to take part in the monthly competitions, whether held during the month previous to the meeting or before, was discussed and lost and nominations for offices for the ensuing six months were received. It was arranged to hold the annual meeting of the club next Friday and that the meeting be advertised.

Messrs Alex. Purnell, Leitch and Waddell were appointed judges for the many photographs entered for the monthly competition and the following were their decisions:

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING
There were present about 40 members at the annual meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, which was held in the college on Friday evening, the chair being occupied by the president (Mr. H.G. Roebuck). The report was read by the Hon.Secretary, Mr. J. Hammerton, jun. and it dealt with the growth of the association since its inception and reference was made to the progress the club had made in the past 12 months. The membership list now totaled 62 and it was stated that 25 new members had been elected during the year and although a sum of about £8 had to be paid for improvements to the club's lantern, the club had a credit balance at its disposal. A donation of £5 12s 6d had been made to the college council for use of a room for the members' photographic exhibition recently and pleasing reference was made to those gentlemen who had given practical lectures during the year. The club's members had been successful in winning prizes at the Ballarat, Tasmanian, Melbourne and the Australasian photographic competitions. "The Wombat", the club's journal, had been the means of improving the library collection and it was hoped that the journal would be a still greater success. Publications regularly received were noticed in the report and the best thanks of the association were tendered to the local press and "Australian Photographic Journal", for publishing accounts of the meetings and in conclusion it was hoped the next year's work would be as interesting and successful as what the past had been. The balance-sheet was of a decidedly satisfactory character and showed the receipts to be £59 13s 2d and the expenditure £52 18s 2d, leaving the club with a credit balance of £6 15s. The report and balance-sheet were criticized by Mr. George Brinsmead who congratulated the club upon the satisfactory position occupied by it and it was claimed that the club was the premier one of the colony, both in number of members and for quality of work done. He had often been spoken to in favorable terms of the work done by the members. He moved that the report and balance-sheet be adopted. This was seconded by Mr. J.B. Leitch and carried with acclamation.

THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS:
was then proceeded, with and Mr. H.G. Roebuck was re-elected to the presidency amidst applause. The following gentlemen were then declared elected to the vacant positions: Vice-presidents, Messrs. C.O. Dentry and J. Wadelton: treasurer, Mr. R.C. Hocking; Hon.Secretary, Mr. J. Hammerton jnr.; assistant-secretary, Mr. A.J. Wood; question-box editor, Mr. G.H. Brinsmead; librarian, Mr. Mathews; Press correspondent, Mr. W.E. Turner; general committee, Messrs. Waddell, Brinsmead, Leitch, Thacker and Mawson. A discussion ensued as to the appointment of lantern engineers, Mr. Waddell urging that they should appoint one chief engineer and two assistant engineers. Mr. Geo. H. Brinsmead was elected chief engineer and Messrs. Humble and Bartlett second engineers. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring officers on the motion of Mr. J. Hammerton and seconded by Mr. Waddell.

It was decided on the motion of Mr. Brinsmead and seconded by Mr. Wadelton, that a special meeting should be held to make arrangements for the continuance of the "Wombat", the society's journal. It was mentioned in reply to a question that the journal had more than paid its way during the year of publication.

The Hon.Secretary intimated that he had received the international set of slides which are exchanged by the Colonial and English societies and it was agreed that the slides should be shown at an entertainment to be held at the college on Monday 13th July. The suggestion of Mr. Mockridge that a collection be taken up at the half-yearly commencement was favorably received and a vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the proceedings.

Monday 31st August 1896  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

The ordinary monthly meeting of the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held in the club's rooms on Friday evening, one of the vice-presidents, Mr C.O. Dentry, being in the chair. A large amount of correspondence was dealt with, including communications from Mr Philip Russell, Ballarat Photographic Association and the Mechanics Institute, whilst a number of photographic journals were received for the club's library. The resignation of Mr. Bartlett, as assistant lantern engineer, was received and accepted and Master Harry Wrathall was elected a junior member of the association. It was decided, at the instance of the lantern engineers, to purchase a new duplicate retort. The Hon.Secretary of the local art society, Mr Arthur Ramage, attended the meeting and asked for the co-operation of the photographers in arranging for a concert to be held shortly and the request was acceded to. "Picture of the best animal" was the subject chosen for the next monthly competition and Messrs Roebuck, Leitch and S. Wrathall were appointed judges of the pictures entered in the fox terrier section and also for the best architectural representation on "sun" paper.

Monday 14th September 1896  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

The members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association derived a good deal of practical information in regard to lantern slide and transparency work from a lecture given on Friday evening by Mr J.H. Harvey, the Hon.Secretary of the Amateur Photographic Association of Victoria. A technical description of the methods followed with success by the lecturer in regard to the preparation and development of plates, was followed by a satisfactory demonstration, the different results attending the use of various processes being afterwards illustrated by means of the lantern. The pictures thrown on to the screen were conspicuous for clearness and fine tone and the lecturer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks at the close. It was announced during the evening that Mr Wrathall's prize for fox terrier pictures had been secured by Mr G.H. Brinsmead, with Mr Waddell second.

Wednesday 23rd September 1896  Page 2 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

The members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association met as usual on Friday evening, Mr C.O. Dentry, vice-president, in the chair. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr T. Baker, of Melbourne, who acted as judge in the architectural competition amongst the members and whose awards were as follow: "Wombat", 1st; G.H. Brinsmead, 2nd; and A.E. Bratley, 3rd. A letter containing some instructive hints respecting the development, etc., of the photographs was also received and discussed. During the evening a demonstration was given by Mr George Brinsmead in regard to the development of instantaneous plates and it proved very interesting to members. It was announced by the Hon.Secretary that he had received intimation of prizes having been awarded at the Ballarat Photographic Exhibition held during the week to the following members of the club, who competed in the open sections: Mr C.O. Dentry second in yachting and first in enlargements; Mr J. Hammerton, first for landscape and Mr A.J. Wood second for landscape.

That the Saturday half-holiday is thoroughly appreciated by employees and others was fully exhibited by the many picnic parties of young people who visited Queen's Park on Saturday afternoon last. In almost every quarter of the park could be seen young people enjoying themselves, whilst merriment and laughter was heard from as many quarters and the reports of guns fired by shooting companies and men in search of game were heard along the river. The weather was just perfect for the outing and fully aware of this fact some eighteen of the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association seized the opportunity and had an afternoon's outing and were successful in securing many a snapshot with their cameras, amongst the pictures taken being groups of ladies and gentlemen representing picnic parties, ladies piloting their way over the stoney bed of the river between the cement works and paper mills and several landscape views. Half a dozen novices or lately elected members of the club had their first lessons in working the camera and the energetic Hon.Secretary of the club (Mr J. Hammerton, jnr.) and some of the senior members, were only too anxious to impart any information they could to the younger members.

Friday 30th October 1896  Page 3 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

Last evening a smoke social was held in the Gordon College by members of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association. The object in view was a two-fold one, to bring new members into closer union with the seniors and to give a formal welcome to Mr. and Cowie, who has just returned from London. There was a large attendance of members and officers of the club and one of the vice presidents, Mr. C.O. Dentry, occupied the chair.

Much useful information as to the latest cameras and matters of interest to photographers gathered whilst in England Scotland, was furnished by Mr. Cowie, who, in responding to the toast of his health, which was proposed by Mr. Waddell, expressed his pleasure at being back amongst the members.

The prize photographs taken by the members during the twelve months, were exhibited and some beautifully executed enlargements by Messrs. C.O. and J. Dentry and Messrs. Baker and Rouse were greatly admired. The gold medal won by Mr. A.E. Bratley in the monthly competition was presented by the chairman, who congratulated the members upon the improvement shown by them in their work during the year. The medal bore the monogram of the association in the center, flanked on either side with engraved representations of cameras and tripods and the name of the winner was engraved upon the reverse. Mr. G. Brinsmead, the winner of the second prize, was presented with a silver medal and Master Harry Wadelton, who won the beginners competition, was the recipient of the association's silver badge.

Certificates won at the Melbourne and Inter-colonial Exhibition were presented to Messrs. Dentry, Wood and Hammerton. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Cowie for his donation of very acceptable gifts to the association. The Hon.Secretary was instructed to send a letter of condolence to Mr. J. Wadelton, one of the vice presidents, whose mother died recently.

A special effort had been made and a new limelight lantern secured and the club had now a lantern that was second to none in the town. The balance sheet as submitted showed that the receipts for the year amounted to over £30, whilst the expenditure had only totaled £25 and the ensuing year would be commenced with a credit balance of £5. The report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Messrs. Hocking and Miller.

Mr. J.H. Harvey, of Melbourne, besides explaining a number of first-class lantern views of the most picturesque parts of Toolangi, near Yarra Glen, which were thrown upon a sheet by the club's lantern worked by Messrs. H. Dentry and Brinsmead, gave a few "hints" for the guidance of photographers when engaged in "shadow catching". The views shown with the lantern were mostly the work of members of the College Club and reflected credit upon Messrs. A. Purnell, M'Phillimy, J. Wadelton and Brinsmead, who secured them when on a holiday trip last Easter with their cameras. Mr. S.R.J. Mawson, vice-president, occupied the chair and refreshments were handed round before the close of the proceedings with the singing of the National Anthem.

A pleasant social evening was passed last night by a large number of the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association who assembled in the club's rooms. Conversation was indulged in and a number of toasts were proposed and honored. Refreshments were provided and the president (Mr H.G. Roebuck) gave a special welcome to several visiting photographers. Mr A. Cowie was present and he placed on view a sample of the latest improved camera, the working of which was explained and generally admired. Discussions took place on the advance photography had made during recent years and a number of valuable hints were given the amateurs by Mr. Cowie, who also had on view a quantity of continental and other pictures of places of interest taken by him during his trip from England to the colony quite recently. At the close of the social several gentlemen intimated their willingness to take part in a photographic excursion to Maude, to be made on Tuesday next, Prince of Wales birthday.

A photographic excursion was made to Maude yesterday by about 16 members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association and some excellent scenes on the Moorabool were secured. The photographers left town in a drag hired from Messrs Cobb and Co. and, as the weather could not have been more suitable for "shadow-catching", the excursionists were very successful, returning to town about 9pm, thoroughly satisfied with their day's outing.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
We have received "The Australian Photographic Journal", a monthly publication. It is excellently got up and is replete with very interesting reading matter. The illustrations are especially good. The number also includes a special supplement containing photographs of Messrs H.G. Roebuck, R. Collins, Hocking and J. Hammerton, jun., the executive officers of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association. Amongst the reading matter of particular local interest is an article reviewing the work done by the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, Geelong, since its establishment.

AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL
The December number of the Australian Photographic Journal more than maintains the high standard of excellence reached by this magazine under its present management. The illustrations embrace a tri-color production, as a specimen of photo-engraving work published by the firm of Husnik and Haussler, of Prague. Several photographs of life in Johannesburg, the work of an ex-Australian photographer, are included. One of these, entitled "Expectation", is particularly attractive. Portraits of several well-known members of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association have a prominent place. The articles are of a varied character, ranging from technical dissertations to interesting serial tales — all likely to be read by the varied classes for whom this valuable magazine so well caters.

A large number of the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association attended the first meeting for the new year, held on Friday evening last. Mr J.H. M'Phillimy, one of the vice-presidents, occupied the chair. The resignation of Mr T. M'Kenzie as a member was accepted with regret. Correspondence was received from the Dunedin Photographic Society, inviting the club to assist in promoting an Inter-colonial Photographic Exhibition, but, after discussion, it was agreed to urge individual members to send exhibits, although those present could not see their way clear to combine and assist by sending a club exhibit. Prospectuses of the proposed photographic exhibition to be held at Ballarat during February were distributed and several of the amateurs intimated their intention of competing for the several trophies offered. The announcement by Mr J.H. M'Phillimy that he intended offering a valuable hand camera for competition amongst the beginners was received with applause and it is more than probable there will be keen competition for the trophy, which is a first-class one. It was agreed that a trophy be presented to the member of the club securing the greatest number of points in the competitions to be held during this year. "Best landscape" is the subject for February.

Some excellent pictures were secured during the Xmas holidays and entered for competition last Friday evening, with the following results:

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held last evening in the college buildings, the chair being occupied by the vice-president, Mr. Mawson. There was a fair attendance.

THE PRESIDENT
The absence of the president (Mr. H.G. Roebuck) was apologized for.

ANNUAL REPORT
In their annual report for the year ended, June 30th, the committee expressed pleasure that the association was holding its own financially and that the photographic work of the members had greatly improved during the year. Reference was made to the satisfactory membership list and it was mentioned that the competitions in the A and B sections during the last six months had attracted a large entry. The committee reported that trophies had been presented for competition by Messrs. Leitch, Mawson and Hammerton and that promises of trophies for the coming year had been made by Messrs. Thacker, Dentry, M'Phillimy and Baker and Rouse. It was stated that many valuable books and journals had been added to the library and the committee hoped that members would take advantage of this privilege more largely in the future. The excursion to Maude Valley by the association during the year was referred to in the report as a great success and the committee, in conclusion, expressed their indebtedness to those who had assisted with practical demonstrations, the college council and the local press. The report was adopted.

BALANCE-SHEET
The balance-sheet for the period under review was presented by the Hon.Treasurer, Mr. Hocking and it showed a surplus of £5 17s 1d, the receipts amounting to £81 0s 5d and the expenditure to £75 3s 4d. The Hon.Treasurer stated that a sum of £35 had been expended in the purchase of a tri-unial lantern and it was very satisfactory to find that despite that outlay they were on the right side of the ledger. The balance-sheet was received and, pending its confirmation by the auditors, was referred to the next committee meeting of the association.

NEW MEMBERS
Dr M'Callum was admitted to membership and Mr. Battye was proposed as a member.

A PROPOSAL
The chairman reported that Mr. W. Ham had questioned him as to whether the members of the association would be willing to compete for trophies for the best photos. of prize stock at the Spring Show of the Geelong Agricultural Society. He understood Mr. Ham wished to offer separate prizes for four groups of animals and the only conditions were that the pictures should become the property of Mr. Ham for presentation to the society. Nothing definite was decided upon, until full particulars as to sections and value of trophies were forthcoming and the chairman was instructed to further interview Mr. Ham on the matter.

VOTE OF THANKS
A vote of thanks to the retiring officers was carried with acclamation, on the motion of Mr. J. Hammerton jun., seconded by Mr. C. Dentry.

ROUTINE BUSINESS
A quantity of routine business was discussed and the meeting terminated.

A number of the members of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association journeyed with their cameras on Saturday afternoon last to Werribee, where they were met by members of the Victorian Association from Melbourne. The day was not the best for landscape photography, but, nevertheless, some really excellent pictures were, secured, the views on the river near the residence or Captain Chirnside having a special charm for the "shadow-catchers" who were in possession of stereoscopic cameras. A quick return, however, had to be made to Ives hotel, in order to escape the heavy rain which fell and where, after tea, a number of toasts were honored and an hour's entertainment entered upon, Dr Kaufmann, president of the Victorian Association, presiding. A most enjoyable time was spent and the Geelong club's members returned by the evening train.

Dentry gave a lecture on "The Photographic School of Experience". During his remarks Mr Dentry gave some valuable information regarding the choosing of a good lens and the uses of the "stops". The preservation and the manipulation of chemicals was detailed and the lecturer pointed out many ways in which photographers might improve upon their work. Those present were given a clear insight into the various systems of weights and measures and in conclusion Mr Dentry intimated that the Rembrandt system of lighting in addition to being used for plain portrait work, might also, with beneficial effect, be worked into the composition of landscape and other pictures. A unanimous vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer on the motion of Messrs J. Wadelton and J.H. M'Phillimy.

A practical demonstration of "carbon printing" was given last evening by Mr. W. Kett, of Melbourne, in the club room of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association before a large audience, which included many ladies and professional photographers. The demonstrator handled his subject in a masterly manner and many points were picked up by those present, who closely watched the practical demonstrations and remarks of Mr. Kett, who gave a lucid description of the four different processes of carbon printing, viz., single and double, transfers, transparencies and upon opal. The lecturer also tersely explained how the process could be transferred to ornaments and household articles. Mr. E. Mockridge sen., presided and after a number of questions had been answered by Mr. Kett, a cordial vote of thanks was passed to him for his instructive and interesting demonstration. The pictures printed and developed during the evening were handed round for inspection and they were greatly admired by all in attendance.

At the conclusion of the meeting of the Yarra-street Wesleyan Christian Endeavor held last evening, the president (Mr J.M. Cargeeg) intimated that it was the intention of one of their prominent members and officers (Mr W.H. Thacker) to leave them for a time, as he purposed taking a trip to London and other parts of the continent. Mr Cargeeg remarked that Mr Thacker's services would be greatly missed during his absence, but he trusted, after his holiday, that he (Mr Thacker) would come back amongst them and work with as great energy as he had done in the past. A few friends had subscribed together and purchased a traveling bag and handsome rug, which he trusted the recipient would appreciate during his lengthy voyage and it was with the greatest pleasure he handed these, together with a silver sovereign ease, bearing Mr Thacker's monogram, neatly engraved, to their departing officer. Mr Howard Hitchcock referred to the interest Mr Thacker had taken in the Endeavor Society and he wished him a pleasant voyage and promised him a royal welcome by the Endeavorers on his return. Mr Thacker briefly thanked the donors for their thoughtful and valuable gifts.

At the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association meeting on Friday last, Messrs Thacker and Jas. M'Phillimy, who purpose doing the journey to tho old land in company, were entertained and wished bon voyage and safe return.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held last evening, a fair number of members being present. Mr. T. Lord, vice president, being in the chair.

ANNUAL REPORT
This was to the effect that during the year the club had not made the progress the committee would liked to have seen, especially considering the advantages that are offered to members. The average attendance at the monthly meetings was 12 and the roll numbered 57. Reference was made to the absence of a couple of members who are touring the continent and the great interest which Mr. J.B. Leitch, who is with the Australian Imperial Regiment in South Africa, took in the club was commented upon. The satisfactory state, financially, of the club was referred to in the report and it was mentioned that during the year trophies awarded by Messrs. King, Thacker, Mockridge, Dentry, Roebuck, Wadelton and Hammerton had been competed for, while several trophies had been promised for competition for the following year. The club's gold medal had been won by Mr. H. Potter, Mr. Mockridge being second and Mr. C. Creer had secured Mr. Wadelton's prize for the greatest number of points received during the competitions. Practical demonstrations had been given by Messrs. Kett, J.R. Harvey and R. Harvie, of Melbourne and Mr. W.H. Watts, of Geelong and the thanks of the committee was tendered these gentlemen. Many good nights had been put in at enlargements. The attempt to form a photographic class had resulted in failure, but it was hoped that eventually the council would be able to secure the requisite number to start the class. It was suggested that during the coming year an exhibition of members' work should be held, but the committee left it with the members themselves to take the matter up. The balance-sheet showed the receipts, which included a credit balance carried over from the previous year of £5 6s 7d, to total £34 15s 1d, the expenditure amounting to £26 10s 7d, leaving a sum of £8 4s 6d to be carried forward to begin the new year with. The chairman commented upon the satisfactory state of the club's finances, but it was regretted that more interest was not taken in the club by the members. A conversational discussion took place and it was decided to endeavor to secure the better attendance of more club members and an effort is to be made to increase the membership roll. The report and balance-sheet were then adopted.

The Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association's exhibition of photography was concluded last evening and was largely attended. The fine specimens of the different branches of the photographic art were generally admired and the enlargement of the flashlight photograph taken on Thursday evening by Messrs. Baker and Rouse, photographic suppliers, at the opening ceremony, was amongst the collection. It is an excellent piece of work and has been presented to the association. The lantern slides prepared by competitors in that section were shown during the evening under the supervision of Mr. Trowbridge (of Baker and Rouse), who also explained the methods of Simplex paper printing. The musical program comprised vocal solos by Miss G. Howard and Messrs. G.R. King, C.O. Strong and H. Corrin, all of whom acquitted themselves with credit; and a mandoline solo by Mr. W.F. Connors, who was encored. Messrs. C.L. Andrews, M.L.A. and Mark Gough furnished recitals; and Miss Thompson officiated as accompanist for the vocalists. In the afternoon an exhibition of daylight developing by the Kodak Company's machine was given by Mr. H. Potter, of Mr. T.A. Dickson's establishment.

He had many samples of work to show, which were pleasing. This is a new branch of photography and doubtless will be followed up by many of the members. Mr. Leitch was accorded a vote of thanks for his interesting and instructive evening.

ANNUAL MEETING
The seventeenth annual meeting of the Geelong Amateur Photographic Association was held last evening in the Gordon Technical College, when a fair number of members who attended were presided over by Mr. J.B. Leitch, one of the oldest members of the club.

The annual report stated that the committee had much pleasure in presenting the seventeenth annual report and balance-sheet for the club year ending 30th June, 1906. The year just closed had been up to the standard. The number of members on the club roll totals 47, including 5 life members. Five new members had joined during the year. The club was in a sound financial position. The year's work as set out in the syllabus had been carried out as far as possible and very satisfactory work had been done. Enlarging had proved very attractive. The optical lantern had been engaged several times during the year and used on several occasions for the benefit of the club. The monthly competitions at times drew a good number of competitors, but finally was fought out by two members. The gold medal given by the club for the highest number of points gained on the year's work was won by Rev. E. Nye and the silver medal given by Messrs. Hammerton and Sons was won by Mr. H. Potter. The junior competition for the club's silver medal was won by Mr. F. Wright but a medal was also secured by Mr. Leckie, who had worked hard. The whole competition work was of high standard and the competitors are to be congratulated on their work. At Easter the club held an exhibition in conjunction with the Field Naturalists Club. This exhibition drew a very attractive display of photography; many exhibits came from other parts of the State and some from other States. Several of the members were fortunate in securing some of the awards. Regret was expressed at the death of Mr. Donald Lord, an ex-vice-president, who always took a great interest in the club and was one of the club's best workers. The thanks of the club are due to the firms and gentlemen who have from time to time come forward to help the club by giving demonstrations and lectures and to the editors of journals for copies of their publications for the use of members. Finally the committee urged every member to work, for it was only by constant work that a club could expect to make progress and the life of the club depended entirely on the individual interest shown by its members.

The balance-sheet showed the receipts to total £17/8/11, which included a credit brought forward of £4 odd and the expenditure aggregated £13/0/11, leaving a credit of £4/8/- to carry forward. The club's assets over liabilities totaled £81/13/6.

The chairman, in moving the adoption of the balance-sheet and report, said they were most satisfactory and he congratulated members upon the successful year's work. He trusted that even greater interest would be displayed in the coming year than that even of the past. The motion was seconded and agreed to.

The election of officers was then taken and resulted as follows: President, Mr. J.B. Leitch, vice-presidents, Rev. E. Nye and Mr. Jos. Smith; librarian, Mr. H. Potter; committee, Messrs. T. Lord, J.H. M'Phillimy, A.E. Bratley, W.H. Thacker; lantern engineers, Messrs. T. Forrest, H. Denmead and secretaries; press correspondent, Mr. H. Leckie, Hon.Secretary's, Messrs. C.T. Seeley and C. Greer.

It was reported by the Hon.Secretary that a parcel of photographic papers, which had been sent them by the Rotary Photograph Company, England, for a special demonstration, had been received in a damaged and useless condition, owing to having been opened by the Customs authorities and exposed to the light. The matter was considered by the meeting, when it was decided to make a claim upon the authorities.

Monday 16th July 1906  Page 8 - The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.)

Recently an English company sent out a parcel of magnetized paper to the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association Geelong, for demonstration purposes and when it reached the Hon.Secretary of the club it was in a damaged and useless condition, having been opened by the Customs authorities, who, in their examination of the parcel, allowed the light to get to the paper, with the result stated. The action of the Customs officials was severely commented upon by members of the photographic club at their meeting on Friday evening and the Minister of Customs is to be informed by the action of the officials concerned, while a claim for its value is also to be made.

The syllabus for the ensuing half-year was arranged and judging by the items, a very interesting period is before the members. It was decided to offer a silver shield to the winner of the most monthly competition's instead of the gold medal previously given by the club. The first monthly competition for the club's shield was "3 best lantern slides". The judging was by ballot by the members present, the result being:

LANTERN SLIDES:

FIRST:
Mr. H.L.S. Potter
SECOND:
Mr. H.V. Leckie
THIRD:
Mr. H.L.S. Potter

This was a good competition, 36 slides being, sent in.

The combined picnic of the Geelong Field Naturalists Club and the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association took place yesterday in the picturesque Maude Valley, whither a large party proceeded by drag. They found the valley looking refreshingly pretty in its spring garb and amongst the busy bird and insect life the naturalists had plenty of food for discussion. While they formed impressions mentally of the characteristics of the valley, the camera brigade recorded other impressions on the negative and had some delightful spots to work upon. Luncheon was served al fresco and the party returned to town shortly after dusk after a very profitable outing.

Trustees - Messrs. H.G. Roebuck, R.C. Hocking and A. Purnell;
Committee - Messrs. A. Muncey, J. Wadelton, J. Hammerton, P. Neilson, J. Smith;
Auditors - Messrs. J. M'Phillimy and W. Thacker.

Mr. H. Potter and Mr. H. Leckie resigned their positions of Hon.Secretary and assistant-secretary respectively, but the resignations were held over till the next meeting.

Lantern Engineers - Messrs. T. Forrest, H. Denmead and H. Potter.
Press Correspondent - Mr. H. Leckie.
Representative GCAPA - Messrs. G.H. Harvey and H. Potter, were appointed to represent the association at the conference of Photographic Societies in Melbourne next week.

The funds of the association showed a credit balance of £8/13/3.

The annual report, as follows, was read and adopted:
"Your committee have much pleasure in presenting the 18th annual report and balance-sheet for the club year ending 30th June, 1907. The year just closed has been one of progress and should prove of much benefit to those participating in the various evenings set apart on the syllabus. The meetings on many occasions have been well attended, but generally speaking not so well as they ought to have been. Enlarging nights have proved to be the greatest attraction, on some occasions as many as 20 enlargements being put through. The methylated spirit incandescent lamp lately purchased by the club has proved to be a first-class addition to the enlarging lantern. The optical lantern has been hired out on two or three occasions, sufficient funds being raised thereby to pay working expenses of the lantern for the year. The monthly competitions for this year have been made more popular by the presentation of the club's silver shield in place of usual gold medal which has been held by each winner of the monthly competition for the month following the win, there being six different winners during the year. The final for the shield was fought out by Mrs. Hammerton and Mr. H. Potter, the result being in favor of Mrs. Hammerton. In addition to the shield, through the generosity of some of the members, a prize of 5/- has been awarded to the winner of each monthly competition during the year. The work submitted for competition during the year is, if anything, above the average, but in some cases there is plenty of room for improvement. The medal presented to the juniors for the best work during the year in their section of the monthly competitions has proved of much value in encouraging our younger members, the work in some instances being quite up to senior standard. The winner of this medal is Mr. Theo. Whalley, Mr. S. Annear being second. The trophy of £1/1/- offered by the club for the member obtaining the most new members up to the end of June has been won by Mr. H. Potter, who nominated eight new members, Mr. H. Leckie being second with two nominations. During the past year improvements have been made in our club room, pictures have been re-framed and through the generosity of Messrs. Baker and Rouse, two very fine enlargements now hang on the walls of our room. The room has been renovated by coloring the walls, which helps to show off the framed pictures to a better advantage, the work of hanging the pictures being simplified by the addition of a picture railing round the room. Our club is also now in a sound financial position, as a glance at the accompanying balance-sheet will show, a good balance standing to our credit at the Savings Bank. Our membership ranks have been supplemented by the addition of 15 new members during the year, showing a membership of 58, including life members, being an advance of 11 members over the number for last year. Acting on the suggestion of the Hon.Secretary of our club, a conference was held during the month of May at the East Malvern Club's Exhibition and was a splendid success, the probable outcome of which will be the formation of a Photographic Club's Union in Victoria, which ought to greatly help our club, with others, in the advancement of the photographic art. Your committee wish to heartily thank all who have helped to make our evenings a success by demonstrations, or providing material for same lectures, etc., also to the donors of trophies for the monthly competitions. Our best thanks are also due to the local press for the generous publication of our weekly reports and to the editors of the "Australian Photographic Review", "Australian Photographic Journal", "Sharland's Journal of Photography", "The Bromide Monthly" and "Photography", for sending copies of their journals, also to the Smithsonian Institute for sending their valuable publications. Finally, before closing, we would ask the members to rally up during the coming year and make a special effort to attend and take part in the various evenings as regularly as possible and so encourage those who go to the trouble and expense of providing demonstrations, lectures, etc. and to those who want to improve their work there is no better medium than through joining in the monthly competitions and thus learning by their failures, as well as successes and in comparison with their fellow members work.

Mr. H.G. Roebuck was elected a life member of the association, in recognition of his past services.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held last evening under the chairmanship of Mr. W.H. Thacker. There was a fair attendance, including a number of junior members. The annual report was read by the Hon.Secretary, Mr. H.L.S. Potter and stated that the association was in a sound financial position, there being a balance in hand of £17/16/8. The membership was still keeping up to its high standard, the roll showing a membership list of 60 - 15 new members having been elected during the past year. The year had proved a very successful one. Many interesting and instructive demonstrations had been given at the weekly meetings and the members had not failed to show their appreciation of the efforts put forth on their behalf by the various demonstrators. Special thanks were due to Mr. J.H. Harvey, who had again favored them with lectures and demonstrations and also to Mr. H.C. Slocombe for his interesting evening with the lantern. During the early part of the present year the members had the privilege of viewing several excellent specimens of the new natural color photography on the Lumiere autochrome plates, exhibited by Mr. Kett, of Melbourne, who also gave an interesting talk on their manufacture and use. Since then, one or two of the club members had conducted experiments with these new plates, with very successful results. The competitions had not been so well supported by the members as was expected, but the committee hoped that the members would take advantage of their opportunities during the coming year and try and compete as often as possible and so help to keep up the interest in this most important item on the club's syllabus. The club desired to thank all friends who had acted as judges for the monthly competitions during the past year, also Mr. and Mrs. J. Hammerton for the donation of the junior silver shield and medal and Messrs. W.H. Thacker and T.A. Dickson for the presentation of trophies for competition.

The report also noted with pleasure that one of the most popular members, Mr. J.H. Harvey, had again been elected as Hon.Secretary of the Victorian Photographic Affiliation.

A number of club outings have been arranged for and it was hoped that the members would rally up and make the coming year a record one. The report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Messrs. T. Lord and J. Smith.

Mr. J.H. Harvey read the report of the Victorian Photographic Affiliation and outlined some important proposals to be taken in hand by that body during the year.

The election of office-bearers resulted: President, Mr. T. Lord; vice-presidents. Messrs. P. Neilson and J.H. M'Phillimy; trustees. Messrs. H. Roebuck, A. Purnell and R.C. Hocking; librarian, Mr. H. Potter; press correspondent, Mr. H. Mitchell; auditors; Messrs. Thacker and M'Phillimy ; Hon.Secretary and Hon.Treasurer, Mr. H.L.S. Potter; and assistant-secretary, Mr. H.V. Leckie.

It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs. J. Hammerton jun., who is at present suffering from illness. Various improvements in the club room were decided upon and on the motion of Messrs. Thacker and Lord it was decided to place on record the club's appreciation of the work of Messrs. Potter and Leckie.

GORDON COLLEGE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held at the College last evening. Mr. Thomas Lord presided. The annual report, submitted by the Hon.Secretary. Mr. H.L.S. Potter, showed the association to be in a sound financial position, there being a credit balance of £8 14/7. The assets totaled £73/6/7 and the liabilities nil. The membership totaled 52. Since last meeting they had suffered the loss of one of the most enthusiastic and active members in Mrs. J. Hammerton. During the year the club had made improvements in the dark-room and apparatus. A number of private lockers had been erected and a large dish rack put up. The lamp had been provided with alternative ruby and orange lights and a safe light assured in developing. The daylight enlarger had been fitted with an adjustable reflector and a small sheet had been obtained for the use of lanternists. Owing to the generosity of the president in donating a special attachment and reflector for the enlarging lantern, all defects had been overcome.

At the Victorian Photographic Affiliation, exhibition the club had been represented and though the exhibitors were not successful the work was quite up to the standard of most of the work exhibited. They were honored by the selection committee of the Dresden Exhibition in asking for six pictures from the club's Victorian exhibit.

At the annual meeting of the Victorian Photographic Affiliation, Mr. J.H. Harvey, one of the association's delegates, was unanimously elected president for the ensuing year.

The winner of the club's senior shield for the past year was Mr. H. Denmead, with four successes; and Mr. H. Leckie was second, with three wins. The committee desired to thank all donors of trophies and the gentlemen who gave lectures.

The balance-sheet showed that the receipts totaled £43 13 4: and the chief items were: Subscriptions. £18/6/6; and club outings, £6/4/6; while a balance of £17/16/8 had been brought forward from the previous year. The expenditure totaled £34/18/9 and the heaviest disbursements were: Rent, £6/6/-: printing, etc., £6/0/7; outings, £7/16/4; and sundries, £8/4/6. The report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Messrs. J. Hammerton, seconded by Mr. A. Mockridge.

It was decided to postpone the election of officers and the transaction of general business till a subsequent meeting.

The results of the enlarging competition, judged by Mr. J.H. Harvey, were announced as under:

SENIORS:

JUNIORS:

PERSPECTIVE IN PHOTOGRAPHY
Under the auspices of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, Mr. J.H. Harvey, of Melbourne, lectured at the College last night on "Perspective in Photography". Mr. Harvey is one of the most painstaking and thorough photographers in Australia and his observations last night on specially prepared slides to illustrate defects in perspective were exceedingly instructive. Whether on fore grounds and vanishing points, height of observation, use of the swing back, or the use of wide angle lenses he spoke with the judgment brought by long study and scientific calculations. By diagrams and data he conveyed to his audience some useful points in picture construction. A vote of thanks to the lecturer was carried on the motion of Messrs. J. Wadelton and G.R. King. Mr. T. Lord presided and the lantern was manipulated by Messrs. H.L.S. Potter and H.V. Leckie.

The 22nd annual meeting of the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association was held on Wednesday evening. Mr. W.H. Thacker presided over a good attendance. Mr. H.L.S. Potter, the Hon.Secretary and Hon.Treasurer, presented the report and balance sheet. The report stated that the past year had been one of great disappointment to the committee. It had been hoped that members would rally up and make the meetings more attractive and the attendance encouraging. Anticipations had not been realized, notwithstanding the fact that the equipment of the club was second to none in the State. A series of helpful demonstrations had taken place and outings for field work arranged, but without any signs of increased interest. Individual interest seemed to be lacking. There was no reason why the club should not stand amongst the first in the State. Unfortunately a number of members had been lost during the year : they included the energetic assistant-secretary, Mr. H.V. Leckie, who was a worker they could ill afford to lose. The club was in a sound financial position There was now a credit balance of £6/13/2. Assets were valued at £73/10/2 and liabilities were nil. Membership totaled 43 and that number should be considerably increased during the coming year. Thanks were extended to Mr. J.H. Harvey for his prominent interest in the club. During the year improvements had been effected in the direction of extending the dark room. The enlarging lantern was removed to a permanent fixture and was available for use by members at any time. The result of the competition for Mr. G.R. King's trophy, which had been running for two years, was as follows: Mr. H. Potter(22 points), 1; Mr. H. Leckie (8 points), 2; Mr. Watson (6 points), 3: In conclusion, hearty thanks were extended to all persons who had assisted the club. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts, including a credit of £4/16/11 brought forward from last year, totaled £29/14/5 and after all expenses had been met, there remained at present a credit balance of £6 13/2.

Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr. Lord; vice-presidents, Messrs. J.H. M'Phillimy and A. Mockridge; librarian, Mr. J.C. Collins; committee, Messrs. J. Wadelton, J. Potter; assistant-secretary, Mr. Smith; Press correspondent, Mr. Wilmot.

Messrs. J.H. Harvey and H.L.S. Potter were re-elected delegate's to the Victorian Photographic Affiliation and both made acknowledgments. Mr. Harvey spoke of the work done by the association during the past year.

A conversational discussion took place over the best way of stimulating interest in the club and several of those present promised to attend more regularly. It was decided to keep a roll book and Mr. Thacker undertook to give a prize to the most regular attendant.

The syllabus for the year was read and adopted. It includes several interesting competitions and the club will give gold and silver medals for the winners. On the motion of Messrs. Muncey and Wadelton, it was resolved to allow one point to all persons taking part in each competition. Mr. J. Hammerton will give a prize to the member taking part in most competitions. It was decided to send letters of sympathy to Messrs. Lord and Gurr in connection with their illnesses.

Votes of thanks, were passed to the officers, special reference being made to the energy of the Hon.Secretary (Mr. Potter). Saturday 15th February 1913  Page 9 - Geelong Advertiser (Vic.)

Leaving Geelong by the midday train a party of six of our local amateur photographers connected with the Gordon College Amateur Photographic Association, journeyed to Warburton in search of beauty spots on which they succeeded in securing several fine photographs. Much to the disappointment of all the 12.5 train was three-quarters of an hour longer in doing the journey to Melbourne, which meant losing the 2.15 train to Warburton and missing the sunset, which would have made a pretty picture in the mountains on that particular evening. However, we filled in the time in Melbourne by putting in an hour at the colts cricket match and then at the river regatta until the departure of the evening train. Arriving at Warburton at 9pm, we were at once impressed with it as an ideal place for the photographer, for in the darkness we could see the lights in the houses high up in the hills which completely surrounds this mountain resort. After a good tea and a chat with the people at Warburton House, we decided to turn in and make an early start next day. In the house we were divided into two parties by the proprietress, so we arranged that each should call the other at daybreak. Well, daybreak came only to find one of the divisions eager for an early morning walk, the other preferring to dream over what they were to see after breakfast. Making sure that the camera was in working order, we decided to take a walk down the Yarra towards the bridge. After a snap was taken along the river we made our way over to the mountain, where more good pictures were obtained. On our return for breakfast we found that our friends had taken a walk in fear they might have been subjected to severe barracking at the breakfast table. Our meal over we made our way to the Bridal Falls. By going by way of the timber mills we were enabled to get some fine views of the rough trolly track which runs in and out among the tall trees and fine tree ferns. When the falls were reached we were a little disappointed for the growth of ferns is so dense that we were unable to get at a spot where a good photograph could be obtained. The afternoon was spent in obtaining a panoramic picture of Warburton, with Mount Donna Buang and the surrounding hills in the background. Our second day was a most eventful one. Hiring a trap and a pair of horses we started off by way of the new road for the top of Mount Donna Buang (4080 feet), a distance of 13 miles, but only 2¼ miles if climbed straight up from Warburton. This is an ideal trip for the photographer, for as soon as you leave the township many views present themselves. Going round by the side of the mountain we first see country where fires have swept away beautiful trees which had taken hundreds of years to grow. As we ascend the hills the views become prettier and the fern gullies more dense.

Arriving at half-way house we do justice to some light refreshments and make another start. The lady at this house told us that we would not get past Cement Creek, for the fern gullies and road views are magnificent. However we secured several photos, at this place and decided to go on to the end of the new road, a few miles further on. Here we found several workmen who were busy constructing the road which is being made in the interests of tourists. We were informed that this road would only cost £750 to construct, as very little stone was encountered. The workmen, although cut off from the township, did not notice the loneliness, for they made their life happier by interesting themselves in Nature's beauties. I was surprised to see how tame many of the birds were; a wattle bird took crumbs from the hands of one of the workmen. At this spot we saw a lyre-bird fly across our track and down into a gully below. Having gone so far as we could by the road we decided to go back to Cement Creek, which is by far the best part of the journey. At this point two of our party made up their minds to walk home by way of a track which runs straight down the mount. It was on this track home that these enthusiasts wished to obtain another panorama of Warburton and district from the other side to which we had taken the one the day previous. They were doomed to disappointment, for a large bush fire started immediately to the left of them and the smoke swept right across the track and completely blocked the view. We have learned since that it was this fire that did all the damage to the surrounding district the night we left for home. This country is very fine for the stereoscopic camera and as one of our number had his with him we expect to see some lovely pictures at our next stereoscopic night. This is a sample of the many trips arranged by the Geelong Photographic Club.

Muncey (vice-president) presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet showed, that good progress had been made in the membership during the year and that the finances were in a very sound condition. The usual yearly outing was held in January last at Anglesea and thanks to the excellent arrangements made by the secretaries and to the generosity of Messrs. J. Hammerton and S. Mawson, it was voted one of the best outings yet held. In May last an enjoyable evening was spent at the Art Gallery by a large attendance of members and friends who were treated to an interesting and instructive lecture on several of the paintings on view, by Mr. A.G. Anderson, Art Master at the College. The club is also indebted to Mr. Anderson for a lecture entitled "The Art Sense in Amateur Photography". This gentleman is always willing to aid the club in every way at all times and his kindness is very much appreciated. Our thanks are due the Gordon College Council, who recognizing that the club is purely amateur and also educational, have granted us our quarters free: to Messrs. Kodak Limited for the free printing of our syllabus and the Photo Review; and to the various demonstrators. It was resolved to hold three competitions during the coming six months for members who have never won a prize and a very keen struggle is anticipated. The Director of the College (Mr. G.R. King) is a very warm supporter of the club and as a recognition of his many past kindnesses he was unanimously elected a life member. An attractive syllabus has been drafted for the coming half-year and it is expected that the various demonstrations will be keenly followed. All of last year's office-bearers were re-elected, with the exception of the librarian, which office is now held by Mr. C. Pearson.

Thus much time was lost and activities greatly curtailed, but members are now comfortably settled in new quarters, it has been decided to go on with the scheme and the following subjects will be demonstrated during the current half year, Developing, printing, toning, trimming and mounting. The outing held on 13th March, to Darley and district was most successful, the resultant competition being won by Mr. A.L. Gooch. Individual presentations were also made to Messrs. F.A. Williams and G. Rowe in appreciation of services rendered.

The innovation of having the monthly competitions divided into two sections, set subject as well as open, is proving quite successful.

The set subject for August was “Table-Top”, in which Ralph Hobson secured first award, with lesser placings to J. Marshall and F. Russell. In the open section, a print by J. Marshall obtained first place, with H. Smith a close second.

During the month Messrs. Bradley and Marshall conducted a Photographic Quiz, which proved a great success and provided members with interesting discourse. Mr. F.A. Russell gained the highest number of points and was the recipient of a trophy donated by the sponsors.

The Society is growing in strength and Messrs. J.H. Maxwell, R. Davies, J. Andrews and H.A. Wilson and Miss Margot Swason were elected to membership.

The Club’s motto, “We Grasp the Shadow”, is the subject of the September competition, the trophy for which is being donated by Mr. W.J. Porter. Our old friends, Mr. H.L.S. Potter and H. Denmead, have been appointed judges.

The Society is anxious to contact kindred provincial clubs with the object of exchange of portfolios of prints. Communications in this regard should be addressed to Mr. S. Hill, c/ Kodak Ltd., Ryrie Street, Geelong.

At the meeting held in the Bostock Memorial Hall on Wednesday 28th November, Mr. Garrett, of the Technical Advisory Service of Kodak (A/asia) Pty. Ltd., demonstrated some of the new Kodak, color processes.

One process, originating in the United States of America has, for several years, been unobtainable from that source. Through the ingenuity of the Australian Kodak Research Laboratory, the complete process is now available to the profession, this being the only country outside the U.S.A. to produce the process with locally manufactured material. In fact, the formula evolved to manufacture the colors in Australia has now been adopted in America in preference to its own.
