WEST AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC FEDERATION
The inaugural meeting of the Photographic Society of West Australia was held at the Postal Institute on Friday, 19 February 1960, the Society became known as the West Australian Photographic Federation and later became an Incorporated Association.
Mr Gray, Secretary of the Australian Photographic Federation contacted Ted Roche suggesting that a photographic society be created in Western Australia. A number of camera clubs existed in the State at the time and as a collective, we could be a member of the Australian Federation. At a committee meeting of the The Western Australian Camera Club, Eddie Edwards agreed to start the ball rolling, calling ourselves the Photographic Society of Western Australia.
At the inaugural meeting officers elected were: PRESIDENT - E. Edwards; HON.SECRETARY - Mrs. Parker; COMMITTEE (Temporary) - Mr. Miller, Mr. Baker, Mr. Roche.
In May 1961 the Photographic Society of West Australia was officially recognized and the only change to the committee being Mr Kaune replaced Mr Miller.
The constitution was adopted on 13th October 1961 and all clubs whose registration was paid by 31st October 1961 were declared Foundation Members.
The aims of the West Australian Photographic Federation include:
- Promotion and recognition of photography generally and particularly as an art form.
- To assist and co-ordinate the activities of camera and photography clubs within the state of Western Australia.
- To encourage fellowship and promoting social activity between clubs and their members.
- To facilitate the exchange of ideas.
- To embrace new ideas and technology associated with photography.
- Provide blanket Public Liability Insurance for Affiliated Clubs and WAPF Events.
The principal activities are:
- The ANNUAL EVENT arranged each year by a different Host Club with assistance from West Australian Photographic Federation Committee. The Event includes the inter-club photo competition, lectures, demonstrations, exhibitions of photography, tours and the fellowship of persons with shared interests. The West Australian Photographic Federation provides financial support to ensure facilities, speakers and sponsors can be booked in advance.
- The FEDERATION INTER-CLUB PRINT COMPETITION. This is for club entries, and is now run in concurrently with the Annual Event.
- An annual DIGITAL PHOTO COMPETITION.
- An annual WAPF UNDERWATER PHOTO COMPETITION.
- The annual JEAN CLAYTON PHOTO COMPETITION.
- The FELLOWSHIP WEEKENDS - TRIPS. Designed to get members "Out and About". This is the best and most rewarding aspect of the federation. In addition to learning, members enjoy the sights of this fantastic state whilst enjoying the fellowship of the members and the common experiences of photography.
- REFLEX is the the official publication of the West Australian Photographic Federation first appeared in the hands of club members in August 1968, as a result of the desire of the President Mr Tony Wilding, Hon.Secretary Mr Desmond Booth and the executive members, Ray Munro, Keith Tostevin and Bill Bailey, to provide all club members with news of happenings in the photographic world.
- 2006 - REFLEX was published on a needs basis and was mailed to each member through Australia Post. A survey conducted in 2007 saw changes made that included distributing the Reflex by email and by mail on a subscription basis.
- 2010 - REFLEX re-emerges as a PDF only document, emailed to all clubs on approximately a quarterly basis. The current editor is Kingsley Klau (2010-12).
