That there was a big increase of general interest in activities of the The Western Australian Camera Club during the past 12 months was shown in reports received at the 22nd Annual General Meeting of the club on Thursday night. It was stated that meetings, lectures, demonstrations and field days had been held and numerous photographic prints had been exhibited at meetings. There was an attendance of 40 at the meeting. Representatives of the Van Raalte Club, Perth, the West Australian Miniature Camera Club and the West Australian Amateur Movie Club were present by invitation. The president of the Camera Club (Mr R.C. Steele) was in the chair.

The Christmas recess having concluded, the West Australian Miniature Camera Club resumed its activities on Wednesday night, when 32 people attended a general meeting at the club's room, 1034 Hay-street. Mr Morris Marks was in the chair. The subject of the exhibition contest was holiday surfing, and a large number of photographs were exhibited in the separate classes for mounted and unmounted prints. The prizewinners were:

HOLIDAY SURFING: MOUNTED PRINTS:

HOLIDAY SURFING: UNMOUNTED PRINTS:

N. Chester G.S. Smith M.L. Morris R. Bleakley H.L. Heffron

Mr A. Knapp gave helpful advice in the course of a brief criticism of the exhibits. It was decided that the next outing be held on March 16th, on the river and that it be followed by a social at night. Another decision was that the subject of the competition at the meeting next month be child studies on unmounted prints of half-plate and whole-plate sizes. The speaker of the evening was Captain A.S.C. Mansbridge, who has traveled extensively in the Northern Territory and central Australia. He spoke of his experiences during a trip from Port Augusta to Alice Springs occupying 2 1/2 years and declared that, contrary to a common belief that central Australia was a desert waste, it could support a large population with proper methods of settlement, for water could be obtained at a maximum depth of 40ft. within a radius of 200 miles of Alice Springs.

The art of spotting and touching up of prints - was the subject of a lecture given by the President of the The Western Australian Camera Club (Mr R.C. Steele) last week at the general meeting of the club. Twenty-four members submitted entries for the photographic study, "Pets," and Mr A.L. Hefren was successful, with Miss H.M. Wright as runner-up. Several members submitted samples of Dufay Color work, being experiments carried out since the previous meeting, when Dufay work was introduced. Members of the West Australian Miniature Camera Club were guests for the evening.

ADVENTURES WITH A CAMERA
Nearly 100 members of the Van Raalte Club, Perth, Miniature, Y.M.C.A. and The Western Australian Camera Clubs enjoyed an interesting and instructive talk on experiences with a camera in unusual places by Captain Frank Hurley on Wednesday night at McNess Hall. The President of the The Western Australian Camera Club (Mr R.C.S. Steele) presided. The South Polar expedition under Sir Douglas Mawson was used to indicate the many difficulties facing a photographer where the very low temperatures affected the films and the operation of the camera and opened up a new technique for the man with the camera. Captain Hurley said that he had the unique experience of seeing the ship's dip needle stand up on end when they were at the south magnetic pole. He related thrilling experiences during the return trip with gales at 70-80 miles per hour, blizzards and storms Which drove the ship 70 miles off its course. A trip across Australia was the next experience, totally different to that of the polar trip, described by Capt. Hurley. A trip south with Shackleton again gave the audience some vivid experiences of the work associated with these explorations. "Comradeship among the members of the crew was my greatest recollections of this trip", said the lecturer.

Steps are being taken to establish a permanent salon of photography in Perth, where the public may study examples of camera art. It is proposed to invite camera clubs all over Australia to contribute to the standing exhibition from time to time. This announcement was made at the monthly meeting of the Miniature Camera Club on Wednesday night by the president of the The Western Australian Camera Club (Mr. R. Steele), who was an official visitor.

Another visitor, Mr. J.A. Jeffery, of the Van Raalte Club, Perth, gave a lecture on the functions and behavior of certain chemicals in photography.

The awards in the monthly competitive exhibitions were as follows:

The first meeting of the Miniature Camera Club of Western Australia, after 34 years recess, was held on Wednesday, the 13th March. The business was mainly concerned with picking up the threads after the long recess, but the enthusiasm of the members was very marked. It was decided to hold a print exhibition for the April meeting, when an address will be given by Mr. T. J. Lambert, of Kodak Limited. The annual meeting and election of officers will take place at the monthly meeting in June. Visitors and intending members are heartily welcomed.

The April meeting was held at the rooms. Fourteen members and ten visitors were present. Routine business being concluded, an address was given by Mr. T. Lambert, of Kodak Limited, on negative exposure and developing.

A short talk on the fluoride coating of lenses was given by two visitors — Mr. S. Tough (Perth), and Mr. Malcomson (Melbourne) — which was very much appreciated. A member’s exhibition of 24 prints was criticized by Messrs. T. Lambert and H.E. Sainsbury. The competition subject for the May meeting will be “Home Portraiture”, together with an open section. Six nominations for new members were received — which augurs well for the future of the Club.

At the 33rd monthly meeting, ten new members were elected. The business of the evening being finalized, an address on Photo-fluorography was given by Mr. A.B. Biggs, a club member. The address proved to be of great interest to his audience, and showed the great part the miniature camera had played in the medical services in World War II.

The exhibition of Home Portrait prints was judged and criticized by Mr. Jack Dent, of the Van Raalte Club, while the open competition was judged and criticized by Mr. Jack Finney, a club member. The 35mm Kodachrome slide exhibition by Mr. Mark Morris was of great interest to the members, particularly the slides of Gilbert & Sullivan Operas, which showed that Mr. Morris was an expert in this particular field of color photography.

The monthly meeting was held on June 12th, when an address was given by the President, Mr. N.G. Ellison, entitled “Print Quality and its Attainment”. The subject covered from the exposure of the negative through to the finished print, and was listened to intently by the members. Numerous questions were answered.

The print exhibition was judged and criticized by Mr. J. Finney.

The general meeting closed, and the Annual meeting was held, when new officers were elected for the coming year. Mr. Mark Morris, Vice-President, was unanimously elected to President, with Mr. J. Finney as Secretary, and Mr. J. Purcell, Treasurer.

On July 10th despite an unfortunate last-minute accident to the lecturer, Mr. Parrose, which prevented his appearance, an interested gathering provided its own answers to questions selected by the President on technical and general subjects. Prints were criticized by Mr. G. Smith and N.G. Ellison, after which the President (Mr. M. Morris) projected interesting Kodachrome motion pictures.

A Club Library has been established and Librarian, Mr. G. Smith, duly appointed. Selection and criticism of members prints will be left in the hands of a special committee consisting of Messrs. Ellison, Conochic, Finney, Richards, Smith, Morris and Parker.

New membership applications and complete plans for future competitions, outings and activities generally augur well for the success and progress of the Club.

48th GENERAL MEETING
The President, Mr. M.J. Bateman, occupied the chair whilst the formal business of the evening was conducted. Later, one of the members, Mr. T.J. Lambert, gave an interesting address on color transparency processes.

At the outset the speaker explained that some applied processes were by no means new, and pointed out that many an old-school photographer had dabbled in the use of such methods as the Finlay screen process. He then showed up-to-date examples of the application of that principle in Agfa-color and Dufay-color. These were later examined microscopically, and the differences in their individual screens were clearly demonstrated. Mr. Lambert then moved on to deal with the more recent developments in the Kodak processes, Kodachrome, and more particularly Ektachrome, examples of which were shown. At the conclusion of the lecture Mr. Lambert answered many questions.

Results of the competitions were:
SET SUBJECT, “CLOUD STUDIES: 1, Mr. Lambert; 2, Mr. Parker.
OPEN SUBJECT: 1, Miss L. Allen.

The Club meets on the second Wednesday of every month in the Chamber of Commerce Board Rooms, 5th Floor, C.M.L. Building, and any interested m miniature camera work are cordially invited.

The 50th general meeting was conducted with the immediate Past President (Mr. M. S. Morris) in the chair. Among the guests was foundation member Mr. W. Gibson.

The paper for the evening was on the paper negative process and was presented by Mr. N. G. Ellison. He dealt very ably with his subject and showed finished examples of his work, together with the positives, negatives, etc., with the work done on them. At the outset Mr. Ellison said a few words dealing in a general way with the advantages of the process. He then went on to a practical discussion of the technique employed in producing the prints, and drew attention to the fact that while he spoke only of the one method, there were others available and the field for experiment for those so inclined was extremely wide.

The judging followed, with the ballot result being: 1, Mr. R.G. Steele; 2, Mr. J. Searle; 3, Mr. J. Searle.

The September meeting was held in the club rooms, C.M.L. Buildings, on Wednesday night, 21st September. The President, Mr. J.R. Dodds, occupied the chair, and after a welcome was extended to visitors and the general business discussed, a print criticism of prints submitted by the members was given by Mr. N. Ellison and Mr. G. Smith. The entries were excellent, and showed a great improvement on previous meetings. Later, the twenty members and eight visitors present enjoyed a showing of Kodachrome transparencies on loan from the Photographic Society of America.

All persons interested in becoming members of this Club will be supplied with full details by contacting either the President, Mr. J.R. Dodds, or the Secretary, Mr. C. Thomas.

The November meeting was held on the night of the 17th in the club rooms. During the general business it was decided that, owing to the close proximity of the December meeting to Christmas, the meeting be carried over until January, 1950.

The lecture for the evening was given by Mr. Orris, of the The Western Australian Camera Club, the subject being “Filters and Their Uses”. Those present especially appreciated the trouble that the lecturer had gone to in compiling his diagrams and the practical demonstration he gave with the use of a prism. The lecture was most enlightening and instructive. Following the lecture, a print criticism was given by Mr. N. Ellison.

Prints for the proposed exhibition are asked for and may be left with the Secretary, Mr. Thomas, at the monthly meeting.

The first meeting for the new year was held in the club room on the 18th January, 1950. The attendance was good and the interest shown in the activities and discussions speaks well for the year to come.

Following the general business, the visiting lecturer, Mr. R.G. Button, a member of the Amateur Cine Club, showed a selection of some of his films. This included “Gateway to the South” and “Tinglewood”, the latter being selected by the Victorian Amateur Cine Club as one of the “Best Five Films for 1947”, while the first named was placed sixth in last year’s judging. Although it could not be classed as a lecture, it was certainly an education to the club members on what can be done with a cine camera.

Prints for the proposed exhibition of members work are still requested, and may be left with the secretary at the monthly meetings.

A “Model Night” was held in the clubrooms on the 19th April, 1950. Members arrived loaded up with their cameras and gear, and sat patiently through the general business.

Following the general business, Mr. N. Ellison gave a short address on the lighting which each model present required, and then handed over to the members. The battle for “shooting” positions then started —tripod legs spread all over the floor, while “ardent” photographers attained attitudes which previously had been associated with acrobats and ballet dancers.

At the close of the evening, the President passed a vote of thanks to the models for the part they had played in the advancement of photography, to Mr. Ellison for his enlightening address and, finally, to Mr. M. Morris for the loan of the lights, without which the evening would not have been possible.
