THlRD WOLLONGONG SALON

The Wollongong Camera Club Third International Salon to be held in January 1948, will offer an excellent opportunity for N.S.W. photographers to view work of an International standard. Entries have been received from fourteen different countries.

We would counsel all A.P.-R. readers who live within a reasonably close radius of Wollongong to try to attend. It is suggested that perhaps Saturday 24th January 1948, would be the most convenient date.

Wollongong Camera Club will be very glad to welcome all visitors and would like them to make themselves known whilst there. Readers intending to visit the Salon are invited to write to the Secretary, Mr. B. Jessop, 13 Bourke Street, Wollongong, giving details of parties, times of arrival.

The Salon will be held at the Margaret Wakehurst Girl’s Club, Smith Street, Wollongong and will be open each afternoon and evening from 19th to 24th January 1948, inclusive.

THlRD WOLLONGONG SALON

Once again it is our privilege to present the Third Wollongong Salon and to thank all who have contributed to its success, with special reference, of course, to our judges, Laurence Le Guay ARPS, L.A. Lyons and Clarence B. Young ARPS, APSA.

350 prints were received this year, although the total was slightly less than before; this was in the Australian entries, being due to the concurrence of the Albury and Portland Salons and the late return of prints from Adelaide, who found themselves unable to adhere to their published program.

The 350 entries comprised 139 Australian and 211 overseas prints. An encouraging note was the large overseas entry, especially Europe, prints being received from England, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.

All prints were viewed by the judges at least three times, the first two on a revolving easel and the third with the prints displayed in groups. No voting was done on the first round, the judges watching the general quality of the entries.

On the second round, votes were counted and the prints separated into three groups. Those obtaining three votes were classed as "in", while those with none were "out". Those with one or two votes were put in the third group and called "doubtful". Before continuing, the "outs" were gone over again, in case there had been any mistakes and a number of prints were transferred to the "doubtful" group. (The recorders noted that a few of these were eventually accepted).

The "doubtful" prints were then judged again. They were spread out to the limit of the available space, between 30 and 40 being displayed at a time. As some were removed to either the "in" or the "out" group, others replaced them until the supply was exhausted. Although a deal of discussion ensued, all prints accepted received the unanimous vote of the judges, who finally accepted 129 prints.

There were 45 prints accepted with three votes on the first round of judging and of these K.V. Arntzen (U.S.A.) and Erno Vadas (Hungary) each had four. These 45 prints were then displayed, and the judges selected the following as the 10 best:

Although the best of the Australian work compared very favorably with the overseas prints, it remains a fact that a large number of Australian workers do not attribute sufficient importance to print quality. As it would appear that there is only one way of convincing unsuccessful entrants on this point, we have made arrangements for a Sydney showing of a group of approximately fifty selected prints. By the courtesy of Kodak, a selection of the prints will be displayed in their new Gallery, 1st Floor, 386 George Street, commencing noon on Wednesday 28th January, until Wednesday 4th February. In addition, it may be possible to show a further series in the windows of the Kodak Branches in Sydney.

Should this arrangement prove popular, it is hoped that next year we will be able to organize a showing for the entire Salon in Sydney as well as in Wollongong.
