“At the risk of being contradicted and criticized, I venture this opinion, that a camera lover is not an amateur photographer, unless he learns the various procedures of mixing his own solutions, developing his own films, and printing and finishing his own prints. A mere child can release the shutter on any camera, and why, then, should so many dozens of grown-up camera owners prefer to remain children in photography?”

Mr. H.A. Bagley, during a lecture at the Wairarapa Camera Club this week.

WAIRARAPA CAMERA CLUB
AN INSTRUCTIVE LECTURE
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Wairarapa Camera Club was held in the Technical School last evening, there being a good attendance. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the President (Mr. E.W. Payton), Mr. R.H.D. Stidolph (Vice-President) was appointed to the chair.

The chairman opened the subject of the lecture on “Landscape Photography" by giving some useful hints. He dealt principally with “Bush Photography in Early Spring and Summer”, and “Figures in Landscape”.

Mr. H.A. Bagley gave some well directed suggestions on “Landscape and Pictorial Construction”.

After the lecture, the prints entered in the “self-toning” paper competition were submitted for general criticism, and subsequently the judging committee announced its decisions. In the seniors, Mr. E.W. Payton’s “A Touch of Winter”, Mr. H.A. Bagley’s “Whareroto”, and Mr. R.H.D. Stidolph’s “Pelican” were chosen as the best prints. Mrs.B. Welch’s “Log-waggon” and Miss Kendall’s “A Friendly Game" scored equally for first place in the junior section, Miss Shirley’s “Interior — No. 5”, taking second place, Mrs Newland’s “Blooms” third, and Mr. Miller’s “Boathouse” fourth.

The popular opinion of club members was expressed in the following order: Seniors: Mr. E.W. Payton’s “A Touch of Winter”, first, and his “Old Man Cabbage” second. Juniors: Miss Kendall’s “A Friendly Game” first, and Mrs Welch’s “Log-waggon” and “A Quiet Hour”, tied for second place.

Before closing this instructive and pleasant evening, Mr. Stidolph reminded members of the outing to be held this week at Akura. Also, that a large muster is expected at the next meeting, when Mr. Winzenberg will deliver a lecture, with demonstration, on “Portraiture and Groups”.

17th AUGUST 1922  Page 5 - Wairarapa Age

WAIRARAPA CAMERA CLUB
Quite a number of members and their friends attended the fortnightly meeting of the Wairarapa Camera Club in the Technical School last evening. Mr E.W. Payton, president, occupied the chair.

After the routine business was dealt with Mr Payton introduced Mr A.E. Winzenberg to the meeting, and said he would deliver a lecture on “Portraiture”. The lecturer reminded those present that portraiture outdoors offered a very wide field for photographic endeavor, and did not necessarily mean the use of a studio camera. Much beautiful work could be done with the amateur’s equipment, provided certain principles were followed. Mr Winzenberg described, by the aid of blackboard diagrams, a simple and useful method of arranging an outdoor studio. From this he discussed the arrangement of lighting to effect a good modeling of the subject’s features. The secret of good portraiture lay in the modeling, and no portrait should be a “map of the face”, soft diffusion being essential for pleasing results. Naturalness was an important factor in posing, and stiffness was to be well avoided. Mr Winzenberg then dealt at length with all the difficulties usually met with, and outlined by clear explanations how to overcome these by dodges and tricks. On the subject of groups, the amateur had opportunities of arranging these in many ways, and could make pictures “tell a story”. Exposure and development of plates was dealt with, and many useful tips were given.

Mr Winzenberg was kept busy answering many questions.

At the conclusion of this entertaining lecture, Mr Payton thanked Mr Winzenberg for his very able and interesting advice to amateurs.

Mr Sanson, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the lecturer and the members of the club for a very pleasant evening, and said he was pleased to note the progress of the Camera Club.

During a lecture at the Wairarapa Camera Club meeting (states the Age), Mr. Winzenberg emphasized particularly that English made brands of chemicals should be used in making up recipes, as in his experience he had found them infinitely superior to foreign makes. "It is only right", said Mr. Winzenberg, "that we should support British manufacturers, as they have proved themselves during and since the war adepts in manufacturing fine chemicals".

WAIRARAPA CAMERA CLUB
SYLLABUS FOR COMING YEAR
On page 1 of this issue appears the syllabus of the Wairarapa Camera Club. A glance through it shows the comprehensive nature of the meetings and competitions.

As entries for the various competitions do not close before the beginning of February, it will enable all members to have plenty of time in which to secure suitable photographs. Beginners are specially catered for, and have a competition all to themselves. The best photographic interpretation of "Masterton” will give amateurs an opportunity to bring forth something original, while the competition for "Landscape” should be keenly contested, as the prize is a Premo Film Pack camera valued at £3 2s 6d. The other subjects allow for those whose tastes lie in other directions.

At the next autumn show of the Masterton Horticultural Society the public will be enabled to view the entries in the above competitions. The attractive trophies offered should induce all camera enthusiasts to join the Club without delay. Beginners are especially welcomed, and their troubles and difficulties will be explained. If the Club can obtain a membership of about 200 it will endeavor to obtain its own club rooms, dark room, enlarger and library. You see the benefits, then why not join?

Attention is drawn to the subject set down for next Monday’s meeting. Lantern slide making is comparatively easy, and will repay the time spent in making them. Mr. H.R. Gibbs, who is an expert in this branch of photography, will show members exactly how to proceed in this fascinating work. All persons interested are cordially invited to attend.

A very interesting lecture, “Across Europe with a Hand-Camera”, was given last evening to members of the Wairarapa Camera Club by Mr. H.R. Gibbs, in the Y.M.C.A.

The lecture was illustrated by lantern slides. Mr. Gibbs ably dealt with his subject, and mentioned the historical associations of the many famous buildings shown. Commencing in England, he took his audience across France to Switzerland, the scenes depicted giving a good idea of the beauties of these countries. Mr. Gibbs also mentioned the different processes by which the various slides were toned. At the conclusion of his address the lecturer was accorded a vote of thanks.

The next meeting of the Camera Club will be held on 3rd December, when Mr. A.E. Winzenberg will give an evening on “Enlarging”.

Members of the Wairarapa Camera Club were indebted last evening to Mr. A.E. Winzenberg for an enjoyable and instructive lecture on “Enlarging”. Of the many and varied branches of photography, enlarging is the most fascinating, and those present gathered many dodges and helpful hints from Mr. Winzenberg’s address. Mr. Winzenberg said that he hoped that when electricity was available the club would invest in a projection enlarger for the use of members, as he felt sure that it would be greatly and appreciatively used. A vote of thanks was accorded to the speaker at the conclusion of his address.

The lantern slides illustrating the lecture, “With Allenby Through Palestine”, were specially lent for the occasion by Messrs Butcher and Sons, of London, and forcibly portrayed the triumphant campaign in perhaps the most interesting country in the world. Notable among the historical scenes shown were the first British Regiment marching through the old city walls of Jerusalem by the Jaffa Gate, on December 11th, General Allenby making his famous official entry, and General Sir Harry Chauvel, commanding the Desert Mounted Corps, making a triumphant march through the streets of Damascus. Many scenes depicted sites of immortal Biblical happenings. Mr. Velvin was thanked for his capable address.

WAIRARAPA CAMERA CLUB
The Wairarapa Camera Club are to be congratulated this year on securing an exhibition of the pictures of the Inter-Club competition, which has aroused considerable interest in camera work throughout New Zealand.

Although the competition has only been in existence six years, great rivalry exists between the two islands, but, as on previous occasions the honors are still with the South, the Invercargill Club having scored the highest points for the fourth year in succession.

The photographs are being shown in sections of each society, the whole comprising a very fine collection of over 100 pictures. Each picture is criticized by Professor Shelley, of Christchurch, thus enabling the average amateur to see where mistakes are made in lighting atmosphere, mounting and other details. George Chance, of Dunedin, holds the champion picture, a very fine piece of work, entitled “The Heads Otago”. Other well known artists are H.H. Gardncr, and W.F. Ferguson, Invercargill, who are only a few points behind. Among the Wellington circle the work of J.W. Jones and A.S. Mitchell gains the best awards.

In the Wellington Amateur Photographic Society, the pictures of G.H. Eaton have caught the judge’s eye. The Timaru and Auckland Societies are well represented.

The Wairarapa Camera Club have made their first entry into the competition, and although well down the list their work has been favorably commented upon and this has given the club the privilege of exhibiting the pictures in Masterton, not only for their own benefit, but for the sake of other amateurs who are anxious to improve their work. Later on it may help the Wairarapa Camera Club to compete more successfully with the older established camera clubs.

PHOTOGRAPHIC DISPLAY

FINE COLLECTION

A most interesting exhibition of excellent photographs is being made by the Wairarapa Camera Club in St. Matthew’s Parish Hall, where the photographs that were entered in the New Zealand Inter-Club Photographic Exhibition are on view.

The photographs are well-arranged on a stand and are divided into sections for each Society, those represented being Invercargill, Dunedin, Timaru, Christchurch, Auckland and Wairarapa.

Some of the pictures are so good that a visitor is impressed by the great advance that has taken place in amateur photography. There is a great diversity of subjects including portraits studies from life, landscapes, all very artistic. An amateur photographer visiting the exhibition could not fail to learn much. A review of the pictures by an expert critic is also obtainable, helping a visitor to appreciate the finer points of each picture.

The exhibition is open, from 2pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm, to-day and to-morrow, and is undoubtedly worth a visit.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION
The annual exhibition of the New Zealand Inter-Club competition camera pictures is to be held in Dunedin this week at the Dunedin Photographic Society rooms.

There are in all ninety-six exhibits, twelve from each club.

The photographs were judged at Invercargill by Mr. J.J.W. Pollard, and after being shown at Dunedin will be taken on to Christchurch.

To-night there is to be a private view for members, and Mr. A.H. O’Keeffe will give an address. Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and evenings the exhibition will be open to the public.

The standard this year is considered to be higher than usual — at any rate, the work is more even.
