WAVERLEY CAMERA GROUP
The third meeting of the Group was held on November 14th. The President, Mr. J. Browne, presided and after general business, the Vice-President, Mr. L.G. Clark, gave a lecture on The Scope of Photography, reviewing some of the techniques and aspects of photography that will be covered in later lectures and demonstrations. Data sheets on various aspects of photography will be made available to members and this should prove a valuable service. Competitions and outings are also to be arranged.

Membership at present is small and new members will be welcomed. Enquiries should be directed to the Secretary, Mr. F.H. Green, Wellington Street, Bondi, N.S.W.

A special meeting called for February 4th was preceded by an impromptu screening of color slides. Through the generosity of a member, Mr. A. Rosen, permanent quarters were made available to the club. Meetings had previously been held in members homes.

On February 24th, L.G. Clark gave a talk on the relative merits of different types of cameras. He was of the opinion that the best quality results are easier to achieve with the larger cameras. Since many members are 35mm fans, discussion was quite animated.

A successful outing was held at Bundeena on March 8th.

Meetings are now held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 142 Glenayr Avenue, Bondi (near Curlewis Street).

On March 10th, three members gave lectures on Tank Development. J. Browne covered the use of the standard bakelite tank, A. Rosen showed the virtues of the apron type tank for 35mm, ease of loading and economy of solution, and L. Clark demonstrated the use of a daylight developing dish of his own design. A flash shot was taken, the "tank" was loaded in a changing bag and several minutes later, members were able to inspect the developed negative. This technique of immediate development can prove valuable in many cases.

On March 24th the Club’s first competition was held, A. Russell gained the first three places.

New members are still wanted. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Enquiries to the Secretary, F.H. Green, 20 Wellington Street, Bondi.

On April 14th there was a screening of color slides by members A. Rosen, L. Clark and W. Wilson. Mr. Wilson had a fine collection he had taken in England and Europe.

An Open competition was held on April 28th.
A GRADE: 1st, A.H. Russell; 2nd, J. Browne.
B GRADE: T. Kelly.

After the judging, L.G. Clark gave his views on Print Judging and his impressions of each of the prints submitted in the competition.

Prospective members should contact the Secretary, Mr. F.H. Green, Wellington Street, Bondi.

A Quiz Night was scheduled for May 12th, the idea being to answer any queries members may have had on photographic topics. The few questions asked showed either that the members were all very well informed or that some thought should have been given beforehand to the framing of suitable questions.

On May 17th three car loads of members and friends searched the district around Avalon and Narrabeen for pictures.

The Open competition of May 26th was judged by popular vote and resulted:
A GRADE: 1st, A. Russell; 2nd, J. Browne; 3rd, A. Russell.
B GRADE: 1st, L. Tingle; 2nd, T. Kelly.

On June 9th a demonstration of Portrait Lighting was given at the home of the Vice-President. Members brought their cameras and at the conclusion of the lecture much film was expended in capturing the charm of two attractive local girls, the Misses Pat and Colleen Gallagher, whom the Secretary had invited along as models. It would seem that the prime requisite for such a night is attractive models, its success is then assured.

The competition of June 23rd was an 'Open' and it was judged by popular choice.
A GRADE: 1st, A. Russell.
B GRADE: 1st, T. Kelly; 2nd, L. Tingle.

The club is still comparatively small but members are all very keen and we now have a good nucleus on which to build a vigorous organization as our membership increases. As yet there are no lady members, but any who wish to join will be most welcome. Enquiries should be directed to the Secretary, Mr. F.H. Greene, Wellington Street, Bondi.

The annual general meeting was held on July 14th, and the office-bearers were re-elected as follows: President, J. Browne; Vice-President, L.G. Clark; Secretary-Treasurer, F. Greene. The Committee consists of the above members, together with Messrs. A.H. Russell, T. Coates and H. Bergman.

The Club was formed only last October and growth has been slow but steady. An attractive program has been arranged for the next year including such topical items as ‘3D’, Color and Photomicrography. This being a small club, the lectures to date have all been given by club members, mostly by the Vice-President.

The Portrait Competition on July 28th resulted;
A GRADE: 1, L.G. Clark; 2, A. Russell; 3, L.G. Clark;. The winning print was a study of the President taken at the recent portrait lighting demonstration.
B GRADE: 1, F. Greene; 2, N. Browne; 3, A. Rosen.

The Gadget Night on August 11th saw quite a number of items presented, including enlarger parts, a Hi-Lo switchboard, tripod head, stereoscope and stereo-head, color viewer, portrait camera, and many other gadgets. It needs only a moderate handiness with tools to save the amateur a great deal of money, and apparatus can often be made which is not available commercially.

On August 23rd our Club and others were guests of the Eastern Suburbs Cameramateurs at Otford. Perfect weather and good comradeship combined in making it a most pleasant outing.

In the Open Competition of August 25th;
A GRADE: 1st equal, T. Kelly and J. Browne; 3rd, J. Browne.
B GRADE: 1st, L. Tingle; 2nd, N. Browne; 3rd, A. Rosen.

Once again there was a pleasing number of prints, showing that our members have at last become “competition minded”.

A demonstration on Enlarging was scheduled for September 8th. The Vice-President set up the necessary equipment in the club rooms and, having outlined the basic principles, made a couple of enlargements. Although most members do their own enlarging, such a demonstration is useful in drawing attention to differences in technique. One September 22nd, Mr. L.G. Clark gave a lecture on Print Finishing. After speaking on the various methods available, he gave a demonstration of routine spotting. Such handwork should be undetectable on normal examination of the print he said.

The Club approached the Eastern Suburbs Musical and Dramatic Society with a view to doing a few publicity photographs. Accordingly, portraits were taken of the cast of their recent show, The Firefly. The portraits were displayed in the foyer of the Methodist Hall where they caused much favorable comment. Here, surely, is an interesting field in which local camera clubs could gain valuable experience.

The Competition on October 13th was Landscape or Seascape.
A GRADE: 1st, J. Browne; 2nd equal, A. Russell and J. Browne.
B GRADE: 1st, N. Browne; 2nd, N. Browne; 3rd, L. Tingle.

The B GRADE prints made a much better show than the A GRADE.

There was a lecture on Flash Photography on October 26th, L.G. Clarke outlined the history of Flash and demonstrated the use of flashpowder. Flashpowder still has its uses, particularly outdoors, and is still the cheapest method of flash. Mention was also made of the latest techniques in flash. Portraits taken by J. Browne by both direct and “Bounce” Flash forcibly demonstrated the possibilities of the latter technique. A. Rosen and H. Bergman then ably outlined the use of Electronic Flash, both members being well experienced with this equipment. Flash has unlimited possibilities for Pictorial Photography, particularly as we get away from that flat lighting that flash-at-camera gives.

The screening of color slides on November 10th was preceded by a demonstration of the relative merits of matte and beaded screens. Several members then projected slides before handing over to the main lecturer of the evening, Mr, W. Carmody, who showed a large number of slides taken during a tour of Europe. Even though the slides were secondary to a more comprehensive movie record, and often taken under adverse light conditions, they proved of outstanding interest.

A successful photographic excursion was made to the Camden district on November 15th. The historic old church at Cobbity was also visited.

An Open Competition was held on November 23rd and resulted:
A GRADE: 1st, J. Browne; 2nd, J. Browne.
B GRADE: 1st, N. Browne; 2nd, L. Tingle; 3rd, F. Green.

We were fortunate on January 8th in having Mr. R.G. Robertson as our lecturer on 3-D Photography. He was ably assisted by Mr. Harris, who acted as projectionist. Two standard projectors were used and the projected color slides were viewed through polaroid spectacles.

Our competition, Men at Work, on January 22nd, was judged by Kevin Aston, of the Cameramateurs, who gave a helpful criticism of each print. It was interesting to note that the winner in A GRADE just beat the runner-up by virtue of its better print quality. The results were:
A GRADE: L.G. Clark.
B GRADE: 1, F. Green; 2, F. Green; 3, N. Browne.

Our lecture on February 9th was on Camera Movements. Although the use of cameras with such movements as rising and falling front, swing back etc., is usually confined to professional work, it was shown how they could be useful to the amateur for copying, architecture and table-top. A small blackboard was used to illustrate the image formation for the various movements.

On February 23rd there was a demonstration on Copying by Mr. L.G. Clark who first outlined the various commercial processes and told of the use made of copying by the various scientific libraries. A wooden optical bench was set up at an angle to the floor, and easel, lights and plate camera were placed on it. This arrangement is very convenient since the copy readily locates itself on the sloped easel, being held flat with a sheet of glass if necessary.

New members are still required. Enquiries should be addressed to the Secretary, Mr. F.H. Green, Wellington Street, Bondi.

On April 13th, Kevin Aston once more obliged the club when he gave members a lecture on the Elements of Composition. We confidently expect the pictorial efforts of our members to show an improvement as a result.

Our competition on April 27th was Tree Study. The results were:
A GRADE: 1 (Equal), L.G. Clark and J. Browne; 2, J. Browne.
B GRADE: H. Bergman; 2 (Equal), H. Bergman and F. Greene.

H. Bergman’s work has shown such improvement in the last year that he has now been promoted to A GRADE.

The club’s annual Ladies and Visitors Night will be held at 8pm on June 17th at the Presbyterian Hall, Castlefield Street, Bondi. Visitors will be welcome.

The First Annual Exhibition and Visitor’s Night, which was held by the Club on June 17th, drew a capacity crowd to the Presbyterian Hall in Castlefield Street, Bondi. The function marked the end of the first full year’s activities by the club and was most successful. The President, Mr. J. Browne, welcomed the visitors and His Worship the Mayor of Waverley, Alderman C.A. Jepposen, then officially opened the exhibition. He said he believed that it was the first exhibition of its kind to be held in the Municipality and declared that the Waverley Council would be happy to help the club in any way possible. We were also fortunate in having the Hon. J. Fitzgerald, M.H.R., to present the various prizes. Awards were:
A GRADE POINT SCORE: 1, J. Browne; 2, L.G. Clark.
B GRADE POINT SCORE; 1, N. Browne; 2, F. Green.

The trophy for the Most Improved Photographer was won by H. Bergman.

Mr. Kevin Aston judged the competition for the Print of the Year and awarded the Stanley Doctor Cup to A.H. Russell for his picture Wharf Entrance. This was a delightful 12 x 15 inch print taken with a Retina la Camera and brown toned on Bromesko by direct development. Mr. Aston then gave a commentary on a number of the outstanding prints. A number of color slides taken by the members were then projected.

The final event on the program was a screening of Color Movies taken by Mr. W.W. Carmody during his recent trip through Europe. Interesting highlights were the bullfights in Spain and night life in Paris.

A feature of the exhibition was the method of presentation of the prints. A total of 92 photos were displayed on racks which were designed and made by club members. Each stand was complete with its own lighting system which showed the entries to their best advantage and caused much favorable comment. If other clubs should be interested, details of the construction could be made available to them.

We feel that the Exhibition has put us on the map, and a vigorous program of club activities is planned or the next year. New members will be especially welcome and will help the progress of the club. Those interested should contact the Secretary, Mr. F.H. Green, Wellington Street, Bondi.

The club has been most fortunate in securing the use of attractive meeting rooms at the Waverley Community Centre at Bondi Junction. Not only are these most attractive quarters in a more central location, but the Centre is allowing the club the use of its large darkroom. Thus we become one of the few clubs in Sydney who are able to offer adequate darkroom facilities to their members. The club has also started a library; a benefactor has given a large collection of recent American magazines and photographic annuals which will form the nucleus of what will be an excellent library.

The Annual General Meeting was held on July 20th and the election of office-bearers resulted: President, Mr. L.G. Clark; Vice-President, Mr. A.H. Russell; Secretary-Treasurer, Mr. F. Green; Committee, Messrs, J. Browne, A. Rosen, T. Coates, J. Lamb, H. Bergman and R. Smith.

The new President praised the work of the previous President, J. Browne, who declined office since he will soon be leaving the district.

The Child Study Competition on July 20th was judged by the President and a visiting photographer from Katoomba, Mr. W. Green.
A GRADE: 1st, A.H. Russell; 2nd, J. Browne; 3rd, J. Browne.
B GRADE: 1st, R. Bittner; 2nd, R. Bittner; 3rd, A. Rosen.

A showing of color slides in aid of the Helen Keller Hospital for Blind Women and Girls was arranged by the Club at the Industrial Blind Hall, William Street, on July 30th and resulted in an entertaining evening.

Meetings will now be held on alternate Thursdays at 8pm at the Waverley Community Centre, Grosvenor Street, Bondi Junction. The club offers many attractive features to intending members, who are invited to contact the Secretary, Mr. F.H. Green, Wellington Street, Bondi.

WAVERLEY CAMERA CLUB
Our meeting on August 12th was a Gadget Night for the display of home-built photo equipment. A variety of equipment was shown including a stereoscope, switchboards, modified plate camera, chemical scales and flash equipment. The most interesting item, however, was an enlarger made by J. Browne which exhibited a high degree of workmanship.

Our President, who is an analytical chemist, was well qualified to lecture on Photographic Chemicals on August 26th. After outlining the chemistry of the photographic process and the formation of the latent image, he demonstrated the formation of the silver halides in test tubes, together with their reduction, fixation and toning. Reference was made to the function of the common photographic chemicals and to their properties, and members should now be more familiar with what happens during processing.

The meeting on September 2nd was devoted to a demonstration of portrait lighting so that members would have some prior knowledge of this subject for the studio night at Dolling’s Studio.

Our new premises at the Waverley Community Centre, Bondi Junction, have proved to be very comfortable and photographers are cordially invited to our meetings, which are held on alternate Thursdays at 8pm.

WAVERLEY CAMERA CLUB
Congratulations to the Eastern Suburbs Cameramateurs on once again winning the inter-club competition. The competition was judged by Mr. Hugh Tolhurst at St. George’s Hall, Paddington, on September 15th. The voting was close but the Cameramateurs well deserved their win.

On September 16th members were the guests of Dolling’s Studio at Bondi Junction. Mr. C. Dolling, ably assisted by his wife, demonstrated lighting techniques, and posed attractive model Toni Goodwin for the members to photograph. Miss Goodwin proved a patient and co-operative model and the members had a most instructive and enjoyable evening. Members were impressed by the ability of Mr. Dolling to judge the lighting contrast by eye and to obtain an attractive modulation of light on the background rather than to resort to subsequent dodging in enlarging.

The first use of our print racks was made in our new premises for an Open Competition on September 30th. To give the members experience in judging, a panel of twelve prints had been submitted to the A.P.-R. for pre-judging which was kindly done by Mr. V. Curnow. Members were advised how to judge the prints and their placings compared. A later analysis showed that the average placings, with the exception of one print, were in the same order as the original official placings. This has given us more confidence in the accuracy of our “popular judging”.

Members then voted on the competition prints and results;
A GRADE: 1st, L.G. Clark; 2nd, A.H. Russell; 3rd, L.G. Clark.
B GRADE: 1st F. Green; 2nd, N. Murdoch.

WAVERLEY CAMERA CLUB
On October 14th, the club had a Color Night and after a discussion between the members on their experiences with color, a number of members projected color slides. Of particular interest were a collection of Tahiti subjects and a series by B. Crossen featuring New Zealand.

Our members were the guests of the Photographic Society of New South Wales on October 26th, at a lecture on “Exposure and Development” by Mr. J. Hogarth of Kodak Ltd. This invitation was much appreciated and illustrates the goodwill that exists between the various clubs to their mutual benefit.

The Landscape and Seascape competition on October 28th, was judged by club members.
“A” GRADE: 1st, A.H. Russell; 2nd, L.G. Clark.
“B” GRADE: 1st, N. Murdoch; 2nd, P. Cartwright; 3rd, K. Chadwick.

The President then gave a talk on the history of the Carl Zeiss organization and its re-establishment in Western Germany after the war.
