Stanley William Eutrope was born in Melbourne and became interested in photography around 1914 when the very impressionistic style was at its height. He would have been able to see the work of the chief Victorian exponents of this style, John Kauffmann and J. Temple Stephens.
Eutrope began exhibiting around 1917 and in that year was invited to become a member of the Victorian Pictorial Workers Society, a counterpart to the Sydney Camera Circle. He became expert at the bromoil process.
In 1920, Eutrope moved to Sydney in connection with a musical instrument business selling gramophones and records. During the Depression this business closed and Eutrope accepted a position as manager of Harrington’s photographic supply company’s Brisbane branch.
He returned to Sydney in 1967 after his wife’s death to live with his daughter in Sydney.
Eutrope’s work was noted for decorative and graphic effects in fine bromoil prints.
