AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY of N.S.W.

Saturday 20th July 1872 The Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney NSW)

AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF N.S.W.

A meeting of amateur photographers, called for the purpose of considering the desirability of forming a society similar to the one in London, which has been carried on very successfully for some considerable time, took place last night at the Oxford Hotel, King-street. Fourteen gentlemen attended and Mr E.B. Docker was voted to the chair. The chairman, at some length, stated the object of the meeting, and shewed the desirability of establishing an amateur photographic society in Sydney. Members he said would be able to exchange the negatives which were now lying idle in their chests, and they would also at the monthly meetings that would be held, receive hints and otherwise improve their knowledge of the art. He had watched the progress of the society in England and he had no doubt that if an association were formed in Sydney it would prove equally successful. The suggestion met with the approval of all present and the motion, "That it is desirable to establish a society to be called the Amateur Photographic Society of New South Wales" was carried unanimously. It was then agreed that the annual subscription be 21s. and a committee of five was formed to draw up a code of rules to be submitted to the next general meeting, to be held on an early day. Eleven of the gentlemen present joined the newly-formed society, and Mr T.W.F. Wilshire was elected treasurer pro tem. to receive subscriptions. A vote of thanks to the chairman for the pains he had taken to place information before the meeting, brought the proceedings to a close.

Tuesday 28th October 1884 The Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney NSW)

The first day's outing of the Amateur Photographic Society of New South Wales was held on Saturday afternoon, under most favorable circumstances and the company comprised between 30 and 40 members, amongst whom were a number of ladies. The Mascotte had been specially engaged to carry the party and about 2 o'clock a start was made towards Double Bay, where the Amateur Sailing Club were to rendezvous. A halt was there made and the scene being a very pretty and lively one, no time was lost in focussing and several pictures were taken by the dry plate process. The steamer was subsequently headed towards Fern Bay, a few minutes being given en route to those who desired to get a picture of the men-of-war in Farm Cove. On arriving at Fern Bay the company separated, wending their way over the picturesque shores of the Parramatta and Lane Cove River, where a number of views were taken. Refreshments were provided. The president, Mr E.L. Montefiore, occupied the chair and, before separating, he rose and congratulated the society on the success of its formal inauguration and trusted that the foundation of a good exhibition photographic views had that day been laid. About 6.30 p.m. the company returned to Sydney.

LECTURES AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

A very interesting and instructive lecture on "Photography" was delivered last evening at the School of Arts, Pitt-street, by Dr J.F. Elliott to a large and appreciative audience. The lecturer, who was introduced by Mr Montefiore, commenced by stating that his lecture would be one rather for the uninitiated than for the forward amateur photographer.

Dr Elliott then, traced the history of the art from Wedgewood's and Sir Humphrey Davy's, who are the supposed originators of the art - time, in 1802, to the various processes used at the present day. The lecturer then more fully described the apparatus required by the amateur, also the necessary chemicals used in the art of photography, also the many processes.

The dry process is more generally in use than the wet process by the amateur on account of the dry method requiring less apparatus and fewer chemicals, which to the landscape photographer is a great consideration. The lecture was illustrated by lantern views thrown upon a white sheet, the views being very beautiful and showing the very rapid strides now made by the profession.

Among the views shown were scenes on the Hawkesbury River, Gosford, National Park, Port Hacking, also some very excellent photographs of Paris before the France-Prussian war and since. Several of the views were received with admiration. The lecture was an exceedingly interesting one, and was listened to very attentively by all present.

Friday 5th March 1886 Evening News (Sydney NSW)

At the monthly meeting of the Amateur Photographic Society of N.S.W. on Thursday evening, a paper was read by Mr E.P. Bishop on the subject of "Enlargements". Mr Bishop gave a complete description of this interesting process and exhibited cleverly executed specimens and diagrams illustrating the process. A useful arrangement was shown by Mr Mundy, which allows the camera on the ordinary tripod stand to be shifted very easily to any position, either upward, downward, or to either side. A new Sydney firm, the "Australian Dry Plate Company" sent samples of its dry plates to be tried by the members at their outing at Manly on the 6th instant. After a few transparencies had been shown in the lantern the meeting terminated.

The second annual conversazione in connection with the Amateur Photographic Society of New South Wales, held in the vestibule of the Town Hall, was opened by his Excellency the Governor, last evening, in the presence of a large gathering of ladies and gentlemen.

The spacious and well-lighted salon, thronged as it was with the “amateurs” and their friends who had assembled to inspect the beautiful collection of photographs exhibited therein, presented a brilliant spectacle as the Governor, accompanied by Captains Terry and Baring, entered tho building. The Volunteer Artillery band played the National Anthem and Lord Carrington, who was received by the president and officers of the society, took his seat on a dais which had been erected in the hall. Shortly afterwards Mr E.L. Montefiore (the president of the society) welcomed the Governor, and thanked him for the honor he had bestowed upon them by consenting to open the conversazione. He also requested him to accept an album containing a number of photographs which had been executed by the members of the society. The speaker then announced to the members that Lord Carrington had consented to become the patron of the association and the statement was received with applause. Lord Carrington, in reply, said he had to return his most grateful thanks for the fresh proof of the kindness which had invariably been shown to him in the colony.

He accepted with gratitude the album which they had given to him, more especially because the views in it were the work of the amateurs. In conclusion he thanked the president for the compliment he had paid to him in making him patron of the Society, and said he wished the association every success. He then declared the conversazione to be open, and subsequently inspected the photographs, some of which were exceedingly beautiful. The different pictures were arranged on stands and distributed around the walls, and in one corner of the room the apparatus used by the amateurs was exhibited. A number of excellent photographs of many of the most interesting spots in the colony are shown, and some of them are well finished and mounted in capital style. The Botanical Gardens, the harbour, the suburbs, our mountain, river and coastal scenery, all have their admirers, and pleasing mementoes have been obtained of well-known spots and favorable holiday resorts, The photographic collection will remain open during the afternoons and evenings of today (Friday) and tomorrow.

Saturday 7th August 1886 Evening News (Sydney NSW)

The Amateur Photographic Society of N.S.W. conversazione and exhibition, which was opened by Lord Carrington on Thursday night was well attended on Friday afternoon and evening by the friends of the exhibitors, who were well rewarded for the visit.

The arrangement of the hall was the same as on the previous occasion; but as it was not so thickly crowded, the exhibits were seen to greater advantage, among which were some very fine views of local scenery, portraits of well-known residents, besides many other subjects and they were all so much above the average of photographic art that it would be hard to say which were the best.

Friday 31st May 1889 The Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney NSW)

The Sydney Amateur Photographic Society held its first general meeting on Tuesday evening last, Mr H. Paterson in the chair. A good number of members - ardent lovers of the art, with enthusiasm undamped by the weather put in an appearance. The object of the meeting was to elect officers and form rules. The new society takes up the position and work of the Amateur Photographic Society of New South Wales, recently defunct and the fully expressed earnestness of the members on Tuesday night promises well for its success. A new rule, to be submitted to the general meeting in June, is that ladies and minors be admitted as members at half the usual subscription. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.

Associated with the art exhibition at the Nepean Summer Festival was an exhibition of photography, in which both black and white and color photographs of outstanding quality were shown.

Besides entries from local camera enthusiasts, displays were received from the following camera clubs: Blacktown, Mosman, Springwood and Y.M.C.A.

In the competition held in conjunction with the exhibition, black and white open championship was won by B. Mutze, of the Springwood Camera Club, with a shot called "Lunar Landscape".

The interesting effect was gained by "turning up" a photograph of a stairway on the Faulconbridge water tower.

Second in this class was "Gathering Storm", by K. Musgrave also of the Springwood club. This photographer also took out third prize.

The black and white landscape championship was won by K. Musgrave, with J. Spieteri, of Y.M.C.A., second. First prize for the black and white portrait went to B. Mutze.

SLIDES

J. Porter, Y.M.C.A. won first prize for slides with an excellent shot, "Sand Patterns", taken at the Nepean River, Yarramundi.

An interesting entry taken at the engineering exhibition won second prize for B. Mutze and third went to F. Denley, Y.M.C.A.

B. Mutze's photograph of ice floating on a pool in Blackheath's park was highly commended.

An enthusiastic husband and wife team travels from Concord to help conduct Blacktown Camera Club.

They are Mr and Mrs G. Pughe, who hold the positions of club president and secretary respectively.

'We don't mind traveling out to Blacktown because the camera club always seems to be doing some thing,' Mrs. Pughe told the Argus.

The club's next important outing will be on Sunday, February 18, when members will travel via Mt. Keira to Shellharbour and Kiama.

Cars will leave from the corner of Wallgrove Road and Western Highway, Blacktown, at 8 am.

Blacktown follows the custom of most camera clubs by conducting a monthly competition. Points awarded in the competitions are totaled at the end of each year and a trophy is presented to the highest point-scorer.

Next competition night will be on March 6 in the committee room at Blacktown Bowling Centre.

The subject will be birds — either in cages or their natural environment.

Mrs Pughe said the recent competition for night photography, using available light, produced some interesting and in many cases, outstanding entries from club members.

Two photographers traveled into Sydney to look for suitable subjects.

Prospective new members should contact Mr and Mrs Pughe at UF 2328.

DUBBO CAMERA CLUB
TOP The original Dubbo Camera Club was formed on Thursday 29th March 1917.

27th March 1917 - from the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate
All persons interested in the formation of a Camera Club in Dubbo are requested to attend a meeting at the Railway Institute rooms, Talbragar Street, on Thursday evening, at 8 o'clock.

30th March 1917 - from the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate
A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Camera Club brought together a number of enthusiasts in the art of amateur photography in the reading room of the Railway and Tramway Institute on Thursday night, Mr. E. Ramus, President of the Railway Picnic Committee, was voted to the chair and in opening the meeting briefly announced the object of the gathering. The club would be run in connection with the Railway Institute, although it would not be confined to the members of that body. It should lead to social intercourse and would probably promote many enjoyable outings for members.

Mr D.B. Thomson moved that the name of the club be the New South Wales Railway and Tramway Camera Club. This was seconded by Mr R.D. Harris, and carried.

All those present handed in their names and the following officers were then appointed: Patron, Mr. Edmund Milne, Assistant Railway Commissioner, President, Mr E. Ramus; Vice-Presidents, Messrs. F. Lyle and R.D. Harris; Treasurer and Secretary, Mr J. Tull; Committee, Messrs. Ramus, Harris, Lyle, Weber, G. Simpson, V.B.J. Lesina, D. Bain, R. England, J.H. Campbell, R.M. Dickson, J. Tull, and D.B. Thomson, with power to add.

A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Thomson, Harris and Lesina and the President and Secretary, was appointed to frame draft rules for the conduct of the club and make provision for the amount of the annual subscription to be charged for membership.

It was decided to meet regularly on the last Monday in each month.

It was decided, on the motion of Messrs. Simpson and Thomson, to put in a non-competitive exhibit at the coming Railway Institute Educational Exhibition.

Mr. Thomson offered to donate two prizes of half-a-guinea each for a bird's-eye or panoramic view of the town of Dubbo, to be taken by a member of the club. The donation was accepted and Mr. Thomson thanked for his generous offer.

The Chairman, in closing the meeting, offered to give a lecturette on photography for half an hour on the 16th April. He thought that they had got things moving along on right lines now, and the future promised well.

2nd April 1917 - from the Leader, Orange NSW
Commissioner E. Milne has been elected president of the Dubbo Railway Camera Club just formed. One wonders why it is that a club of this nature does not obtain in Orange, where amateur photography forms one of the chief pastimes amongst our young folk.

11th May 1917 - from the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate
At a largely attended meeting of the Dubbo Camera Club, held at the Railway Institute rooms, Mr. E. Ramus (President) delivered a most instructive lecture on general photography. This was much appreciated by the large number of members of the Club present.

The pupils of the local High School have been invited to attend at the Institute rooms on Monday night next, when a demonstration in developing will be given. The members of the Club are also requested to be present.

18th May 1917 - the following from the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate
SNAPSHOTS FROM HOME LEAGUE Y.M.C.A.

Recently Mr Arthur Landon, organizing secretary for the Y.M.C.A. SNAPSHOTS League, visited Dubbo and arranged with the local Camera Club to start a branch of the League here. This was done. The objects of the League are to provide snapshots of the relatives, the home life, etc., of the boys fighting at the front. Application is made through the Y.M.C.A. overseas and the various branches throughout the world undertake to provide their snapshots free of charge. We would appeal to camera enthusiasts to join this League and assist in the good work. Mr G.W.J. Tull is the local Secretary of the branch.

18th May 1917 - the following from the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate
The DUBBO CAMERA CLUB

A special meeting of the above body was held in the Railway Institute on Tuesday night, when there were present: President E. Ramus (in the chair) and Messrs Campbell, Bain, Simpson, England, Rusden, Dickson, Tull (Secretary Lesina and Thomson. Apologies for absence were received from Misses Ison and Sears, and Mr Harris.

The principal business of the meeting was a lecture and demonstration by Mr G.C. Simpson on developing plates and papers. Two plates that were exposed last Sunday were developed and the lecturer explained his process throughout and the materials used. Two prints were then taken on gaslight paper and developed in a similar manner. The demonstration was followed with keen interest and at the close a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer.

This is the first of a series of further practical demonstrations. The chairman announced that through present members he would be pleased to gather in other students of photography, the Club being open to all.

10th February 1940 - from the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate

A preliminary meeting to form a Camera Club in Dubbo will be held at the Court House Hotel on Wednesday night next. All amateur photographers interested in the formation of such a club are asked to get in touch with Mr H. Jones, 34 Myall Street, Mr E. McGlynn (phone 50), or Mr H. Myers, Talbragar Street.

15th February 1940 - from the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate

A full rally of members of the above club and also many outsiders, Dr Handcock in the chair, attended at the Mechanics' Hall on Friday evening to witness a demonstration given by Messrs. Baker and Rouse's expert, Mr A. Rankin. The demonstration proved interesting beyond expectations.

Mr Rankin first demonstrated the new Kodak daylight developing machine, putting through local views in the machine in the brilliantly lighted room. The results were perfect, thereby proving that the old, stuffy dark room is obsolete. He then followed up the theme of daylight photography, making prints in the same bright light on the "pearl gaslight" paper, which resembled beautiful engravings. He concluded his demonstration by putting through a number of Sem P.O.P. prints, first placing them in a recently invented preparation - pretone - which entirely does away with all washing as under the old style. The whole process occupied not more than 15 minutes. When working on the old method this process would take hours and needed the greatest care to prevent imperfections, which were entirely absent in this new style of working.

A hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Rankin for his able demonstration was proposed by Dr Handcook and carried with acclamation. A vote of thanks was also tendered to Messrs. Baker and Rouse for the presentation of a number of books to the club.

A demonstration of photographic work was given by Mr A. Rankin (Messrs Baker and Rouse's expert) on the stage of the Goulburn Mechanics Hall on Friday night. Dr Handcock presided and about twenty five members and friends were present. The demonstration was exceptionally interesting and all were greatly pleased.

Mr Rankin first showed the capabilities of the new Kodak daylight developing machine by putting through a number of local views in a brightly lighted room. The results were highly satisfactory and proved that the stuffy dark-room is no longer a necessity. Beautiful prints from pearl gaslight paper were then placed in a new preparation called pretone, which entirely does away with all washing under the old system. The process occupied only about fifteen minutes as against hours formerly, besides turning out better pictures.

On the motion of Dr Handcock, seconded by Mr T. Williams, votes of thanks were accorded to Mr Rankin and to Messrs Baker and Rouse for publications and assistance to the Club.

The usual monthly meeting of the above club was held at the secretary's residence on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance of members. Mr Dick gave a demonstration of printing and development in gaslight on arolyte gaslight paper. Mr Dick handled his subject very satisfactorily, producing exceptionally good photos from all classes of negatives.

The entries for the president's prize competition were greater than for any previous one, and the same high standard of work as heretofore was shown, making the judging of the photos a difficult matter. The landscape competition was carried off by Mr Stevens and the best animal study by Mr J. Turner. The competition for next meeting is a flower study for a prize donated by Mr J. Turner.

Saturday 26th April 1913 Goulburn Evening Penny Post (Goulburn, NSW)

A movement is on foot to revive the Goulburn Camera Club, an institution which has been lying dormant for some years. Goulburn is one of the few large centers in New South Wales which lacks a club carried on for the benefit of amateur photographers and it is thought that the number of those who use the camera is large enough to justify the proposed club. A meeting will be held at the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening next, when a good roll up of amateurs is hoped for.

Saturday 3rd May 1913 Goulburn Evening Penny Post (Goulburn, NSW)

A meeting having for its object resuscitation of the Goulburn Camera Club was held at the Masonic Hall on Thursday night. The attendance was moderate, but enthusiasm prevailed and the long dormant institution was galvanized into life and successfully started on its new career.

Mr. G. Findlay was elected to the chair and moved - "That a club be formed to be called the Goulburn Camera Club, having for its object the promotion and encouragement of photography by the following means:- (a) Meetings of members for the interchange of ideas and experiences; (b) exhibitions, competitions, criticisms and advice tending to further a spirit of comradeship among members; (c) excursions with the camera; (d) papers and addresses and lectures, with demonstrations by members and others; (e) loan and exchange of each other's works.

Mr J.E. Foxall seconded the motion, which was carried.

The following officers were elected:- Patron, Mr F.K. Chisholm; president, the Mayor (Alderman Turner); vice-presidents, Alderman Steele and Messrs W.R. Costley, E.W. Johnson, S. Laws and C.E. Prell; secretary, Mr E.H. Dudley; treasurer, Mr J.E. Foxall; provisional committee, the officers and Messrs. J. Brown, G. Findlay, G. Murray, G.A. Penty, F. Potter and R.M. Wild. The following were appointed as a sub-committee Messrs E.H. Dudley, G. Findlay, and J.E. Foxall, to draft rules to be submitted to a meeting of provisional committee to be called about the middle of the month. It was decided that each member should do his best to secure names of intending members, and that a general meeting should be called early in June. The meeting then adjourned sine die.

Saturday 21st June 1913 Goulburn Evening Penny Post (Goulburn, NSW)

A meeting of members and intending members of the Goulburn Camera Club is called for eight o'clock on Thursday night next at the Masonic Hall. As this will be practically the inaugural meeting a large attendance is hoped for. A number of local photographic enthusiasts have signified their intention of joining the club and the newly formed institution should prove a success from every point of view.

Saturday 21st February 1914 Goulburn Evening Penny Post (Goulburn, NSW)

The sub-committee appointed to select rooms for the Goulburn Camera Club met on Thursday night, Mr G.A. Penty presiding. The secretary reported that, after numbers of disappointments and fruitless enquiries, he had secured a building suitable as a club-room next to Mr S.L. Furnor's store in Bradley street, opposite the Exchange Hotel.

The edifice, which was formerly used as a forage store, boasts little in the way of architectural beauty, but after a clean-up and with the necessary water and illuminant laid on, a very cosy meeting room and a spacious dark-room will be available at any time.

The club has for a time languished, but with a handy rendezvous a large influx of members is anticipated, and the institution should soon rank among the older societies of the city. A general meeting is to be held shortly, when plans for the future will be discussed and ways and means arranged.

Saturday 28th February 1914 Goulburn Evening Penny Post (Goulburn, NSW)

A meeting of the Goulburn Camera Club was held at the Masonic Hall on Wednesday night, Mr S. Laws, vice-president, presided over an enthusiastic attendance. The secretary reported that he had secured the building in Bradley Street opposite the Exchange Hotel. It was resolved to hold a working bee on Saturday afternoon next, when members will lay aside the camera and take to brushwork for a few hours.

The chairman kindly donated half a guinea towards furnishing the room and it was decided to devote the Mayor's contribution to the fitting up of the club-room, Mr Laws' donation to be expended on the dark-room.

The secretary was instructed to write to members for outstanding subscriptions and also to endeavor to secure donations of timber and fittings for the dark-room.

Hearty votes of thanks to the patron (Mr L.K. Chisholm), the Mayor (Ald. Turner) and Mr Laws for their contributions were carried by acclamation.

The treasurer reported a credit balance of £2 10/6. Three members guaranteed a quarter's rent, but it is hoped that with a room to meet in additional subscriptions will pay expenses. After an hour's informal chat on photographic subjects the meeting adjourned. It is hoped that the club members will shortly be called together to take part in the opening of the new rooms.

PHOTOGRAPHING SPIDERS

CHANCE FOR GOULBURN AMATEURS

Goulburn amateur photographers who wish to try their hands and cameras, at something out of the common might do worse than take up the study of spiders.

Mr J. Foxall, of the Lands Office, has received a letter from Mr Richard Hancock, of Hadleigh, Mary's Road, Stechford, England, in which the writer says:- "I am interested in the study of spiders and am desirous of getting into touch with any member of the Goulburn Camera Club who is interested in the study of natural history, with a view to obtaining either living specimens or photographs of them and their spinning work. I should he pleased to either purchase or exchange photographs from my large collection".

Mr. Hancock encloses two excellent photos., one of a grisly looking spider and the other of a large web laden with moisture, both beautiful specimens of the camera-man's work.

It is perhaps hardly necessary to add that the Goulburn Camera Club, founded by a trio of local enthusiasts, has since the war been in recess. It is hoped that the club will shortly be resuscitated.

Friday 8th March 1940 Goulburn Evening Penny Post (Goulburn, NSW)

SECRETARY'S LETTER

Sir, Not so long ago in an editorial you condemned the carping critics for their lack of interest in anything that has as its object the advancement of Goulburn.

Almost 12 months ago a number of camera enthusiasts formed a club, the active members of which had a splendid non-competitive exhibit at this week's show. This, in your own words, "commanded special attention as being easily the best display of photographs at a Goulburn Show for many years." These, and many other words of praise, appeared in the Penny Post of Tuesday last. The members of my club and I appreciate your gesture in trying to stimulate our effort to introduce a cultural movement which, by way of the camera, will provide expression for the artistically inclined.

But we consider it most inconsistent of your worthy paper that space was allowed for a paragraph appearing in the issue on Wednesday last under the heading of "Photography at the Show," the concluding lines of which not only ignore the existence of the Goulburn Camera Club, but would attempt to sweep the whole movement into "abeyance".

D.C. NAWELL

Hon. Secretary

There was no endeavor on the part of the Post to sweep any cultural effort in Goulburn into "abeyance." That depends upon the vigor of the cultural effort, not on the Post. We would be glad to receive anything in the way of reports of the work the Camera Club is doing. Editor.

Friday 31st May 1940 Goulburn Evening Post (NSW)

The Goulburn Camera Club's comprehensive non-competitive display to be exhibited this week at the Goulburn Show will speak well for the untiring efforts of the organizers and active members during the past 12 months. Elsewhere in today's issue the club announces a special competition and offers valuable prizes for the most interesting photograph token at the Show this week. Everyone interested in photography should give the club their active support.

Friday 31st May 1940 Goulburn Evening Post (NSW)

The committee of the Goulburn Camera Club have arrangements well in hand for their first birthday dance to be held in the Southern Cross Hall tomorrow night. Valuable prizes, including two miniature cameras, will be given away to the winners of the spot dances. Invitations may be obtained from La Sibyll Studios.

Monday 24th June 1940 Goulburn Evening Post (NSW)

The Goulburn Camera Club's first annual meeting held this month attracted a good muster of members, indicating that the club is very much alive.

It was decided to hold regular photographic outings in and around Goulburn, where there is a variety of subjects within easy walking distance to provide members with plenty of scope for their cameras. Prints from negatives taken during the excursions will be shown at the regular monthly meetings, when they will be open to criticism and judging.

The camera is no longer regarded as a toy for occasional use, but an absolute necessity in modern times. Without the cameras and men who know how to use them, our newspapers would be very drab indeed. Even the advertisements in a modern newspaper owe their existence to the artist and his camera.

In industry, the Navy, Army and Air Force, the camera is used to a much greater extent than is perhaps realized. A study of some of the official photographs showing enemy fortifications and the results of bombing raids strikingly illustrate but a few of the uses to which the camera is being put during the present war.

It may not be generally known that the officers and men of the Royal Navy are encouraged by the authorities to use cameras to record their life at sea and happenings upon their ships. Subject to censorship, of course, these photographs are being printed by the newspapers so that the general public may gain some insight into the lives of their defenders during war time.

Photography is an instructional and useful hobby and the Goulburn Camera Club provides an opportunity for enthusiasts to join in discussions and outings, thereby improving their photographs. It must be remembered that all have to start at the bottom in photography as in anything else; there is no easy way to success.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SALON MAY BE SENT ON TOUR

The international photographic salon organized by the Canberra Photographic Society may be sent to other capital cities for exhibition.

The proposal has been put forward by leading interstate photographers, who came to Canberra to see the exhibition.

The committee of the Canberra Photographic Society is expected to make a decision on the suggestion this week.

Visitors to the salon, which is being shown in the 2CA Theatrette, today will include members of the Goulburn Camera Club.

More than 500 persons have attended the exhibition already. It will finish its Canberra season on Wednesday.

Tuesday 29th January 1952 Goulburn Evening Post (NSW)

The Goulburn Camera Club held its election of officers at the annual meeting last Wednesday night.

Mr J. Steele was elected President; Mr H.P. Carman, Hon.Secretary; Mr G. Clegg, assistant Secretary; Mr Jackson, treasurer; Mr G. Mote and Mr Fisher, Publicity Officers and Mr P. Barling, a make-up expert.

At the meeting, the joining fee was fixed at 10/6 annually and an attractive program for the next few months was arranged, beginning with a lecture and demonstration by Mr J. Fisher on Wednesday, January 30, entitled "How to Process A Film".

After general business, the members arranged a "swap shop" for their unwanted photographic equipment, followed by an auction of unswapped gear.

The idea proved so successful that it was decided to keep a "wanted" and "for sale" list permanently displayed on the club room walls. It was surprising to see how keenly an item discarded by one member was sought by another.

Prize winners of the Historical Society's photographic competition, which is being exhibited in Rockman's show windows, were all members of the Goulburn Camera Club.

First prize in the historical section went to Mr G. Manion and in the historical and photographic section to Miss P. Robinson. Prints by Mr D. Ford and Miss N. Brown were highly commended.

SHUTTERBUGS IN PIX COMP

The Parramatta Camera Club members will take part in a State-wide competition in the Ensemble Theatre, Milson's Point, this month.

The competition, unique in theatrical history in Australia, will open on August 21.

Ensemble director, Mr Hayes Gordon, said yesterday was the first time camera clubs had been permitted unreserved entry to a theatre for photographic purposes.

Theatre managements generally maintained a strict ban on 'outsiders' taking photographs of a stage show, he said.

Members of the George Photographic Society (Rydalmere), Cumberland, Parramatta and Shell Refinery Camera Clubs have been been invited to participate in the competition at theatre party prices.

Members are asked to submit prints or color slides of a scene from the Ensemble's current production 'The Seven Year Itch.'

First, second and third prizes of photographic equipment to the value of £35 have been donated by Hanimex Pty. Ltd.

Photographic distributors, Goodman Bros., have also offered 10 consolation prizes of £1/1/- each.

One of the most unusual points about 'The Seven Year Itch' competition is that it is being held in Australia's only permanent 'theatre-in-the-round'.

The speaker will be editor of a leading Australian photographic magazine.

He will use examples of his own work to demonstrate the talk.

The club's growing pains may force it to move its headquarters.

LECTURE ON ART OF CLOSE-UP PHOTOGRAPHY

Parramatta Camera Club members will attend a special lecture on close-up photography later this month.

CAMERA CLUB BUSY

The lecture will be held at Parramatta Youth Centre building in Macquarie Street, on 22nd August at 8 p.m.

Member of Grace Bros, photography department - Mr Ron Jeffs, will give the lecture.

A club spokesman appealed for a good attendance at the lecture.

Close up photography is a most exacting phase of the art, he said.

Any advice from an expert of Mr. Jeff's experience will be invaluable to the keen amateur photographer, the spokesman added.

The club recently had a visit from a photographer of international standing.

He is Mr Keith Musgrave, who had his color prints accepted for a recent International exhibition of photography in Sydney.

Mr Musgrave demonstrated to club members his own method of color printing.

Many of the members were suprised by the system's simplicity, the club spokesman said.

Parramatta Camera Club is now in its third 'home' since a sharp increase in membership several months ago.

TOP MODEL POSES FOR CAMERA CLUB

A leading Sydney model will pose for portrait and pinup photographs at a meeting of Parramatta Camera Club tonight (Wednesday).

Members of the club and their friends will be invited to photograph the model and to enter their pictures in a club competition.

The model has not yet been named, but she was a finalist in several beauty contests earlier this year.

President of Parramatta Camera Club, Mr Reg Higgins, said yesterday the club was in creasing its activities the coming summer months.

OUTING

An outing has been arranged next Sunday to Mount Wilson, where members will be able to photograph bush settings, Mr. Higgins said.

With the approach of warmer weather, thousands of beautiful blossoms should be out to attract many of our members to the Mount Wilson outing, he said.

Mr Higgins said the introduction of a photographic model at tonight's meeting would create wide interest.

She will pose for photographers in street dresses and in swimming costumes, Mr Higgins said.

The club meets in the Parramatta Youth Centre and new members are always welcome.

PITTWATER CAMERA CLUB
TOP
Pittwater Camera Club by John Taylor

Pittwater Camera Club Inc began in 1966 when Did & Charles Usher placed an advertisement in the Manly Daily for photographers interested in forming a Camera Club. The first to reply was Jim Mullens so Pittwater Camera club was formed.

The first meeting was at Did & Charles Usher’s home in late November 1966. They provided this venue to promote interest in photography. It wasn’t until 1973 the Club moved to the Presbyterian Hall in Barrenjoey Rd, Mona Vale because the number of members had grown. Other venues were the Mona Vale Bus Depot & Loquat Valley School. We now meet at our lovely venue BYRA Pittwater Rd., Bayview.

Pittwater Camera Club in those days were affiliated with the Federation of Camera Clubs and entered interclubs, Top Shot and the Brookvale Show. They were able to improve their photography much as we do now. They had many now famous photographers as judges - Lionel Howes, Winifred Schmidt and Les Barnet (Department of Education Photography) listed by USA authorities as among Worlds Top Photographers. We are still affiliated with FCC and members enter Topshot and other competitions.

Charles Usher was President then Patron until 1985. Jim Mullens was made an honorary life member early 80’s. Jim at that stage gained his AFIAP and was awarded The Leo Whittle Sportsman Photographer of the Year for his services to photography.

The club has now embraced the Digital era and our members come from a wide range of backgrounds and have varied photographic interests ranging from Creative photography to Landscape and Portraiture to name just a few. We endeavor to cater to all these interests by providing training and encouragement to all members.

In 2006 they celebrated their 40th Anniversary.

Wentworthville Camera Club won both the color slide and black and white sections of a competition at the weekend against Springwood Club.

In the black and white section Wenworthville gained 335 points to Springwood's 305.

Wentworthville won the color slide section by 346 1/2 points to 321 1/2 points.

Twelve members from Wentworthville traveled to Springwood for the interclub competition.

Wentworthville member Mr Frank De Beer proved that glamor does not always count in the portrait competition.

He won the section with his print of a cow.

Springwood members concentrated on scenes while Wentworthville entrants preferred portraits or action studies.

Competition was close on the color slide section for individual entrants.

Springwood member Mrs Shirlow took first prize with a Spanish street scene.

She finished only a few points ahead of Wentworthville member, Mr Cres Clark, with a cleverly arranged snow scene slide.

Next meeting night at Wentworthville will be on October 20.

Wentworthville Camera Club boasts an active membership of 35 — one of the largest in the western suburbs.

The club was formed about nine years ago by six keen amateur photographers.

Some of these foundation members are still playing a leading role in club activities.

Club president, Mr R. Fink, said two recent events which keenly interested members were:

1. A lecture on color printing at the last meeting.

2. A full day's outing at Taroonga Park where members photographed animals and scenes.

Results of the Taronga Park competition will be announced on March 23.

Mr Fink may be contacted at YA 3081 or secretary, Miss M. Burke, at YA 9479.
