    ROBYN COLLIER - AUSTRALIAN ARTIST

AUSTRALIAN WILDERNESS LANDSCAPE AND SEASCAPE ARTIST
Robyn is well known as a prominent Australian wilderness landscape and seascape painter of contemporary realism who started painting in the early 1970’s – when traditional art was really taking off and Sydney Galleries were frequent and successful. Most of what she has learned has been learned from the observation of nature and constant hard work – being a self realised artist. Having spent many years painting en plein-air she then graduated to studio work and subjects requiring more time and reference while still retaining the Alla-Prima technique. (Direct painting, wet-in-wet).

At some stage in the mid 1980's I was fortunate enough to be taken on a trip into the Burragorang Valley, which had been flooded in the 50s to make way for Warragamba Dam – now Sydney’s water supply. Back in those earlier times, the Burragorang Valley was a mecca for famous artists and I firmly believed that there was not much left after the flood waters had slowly enveloped the farmland and cut off the old silver mining town of Yerranderie. What a wonderful surprise to see magnificent bluffs, rolling valleys, abandoned homesteads and intimate waterways. This trip started me on a journey where I came to love the painting of places that were not widely painted by other artists – where the human touch was less apparent. The then Sydney Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Board commissioned me to paint many paintings of their catchment areas, which gave me access to even more wonderful hidden places. This relationship lasted for a good fourteen years or more and was a big influence in my art career.

Robyn has bush walked extensively over her 40 year career as a visual artist and still walks several times a week. Her real love is traveling to remote areas – wilderness subjects and areas of difficult access being her special niche. Studio work by definition, can be very limiting in its inspiration if time is not taken to absorb the energy of the natural world. Love of walking takes her to some very special and isolated places – most too long in distance to carry heavy painting gear – enjoying the interpretation of special moments that only a camera can capture. The interplay of light and shadow or the unravelling of a complex pattern on water, the fleeting moment of a cliff turning purple in the late light, are all the type of moments difficult to capture convincingly without a camera at the ready. But it is the human element of re-composing the subject and the interpretation of the image in a new way that creates a painting over a photograph. As an artist Robyn is invigorated by the challenge of the painting of more difficult and intimate subjects. However always mindful that it is a painting that she is creating she rarely relies on one photograph alone – which is the aid, not the end result.

Painting will always be her first love, but feels enriched by being able to impart knowledge to others who are also enjoying the journey of art – something that has formed and enhanced her life beyond belief.
While photographs and digital prints adorn many modern-day walls, nothing, she feels, can take the place of an artists skill and interpretation in paint. It is this element that makes original art so special. Surely it is only this human creative element that can give rise to the the feeling of awe and the comment "How did they do that?" And it is so true that art can change the way we feel.

During this time Bronwen has amassed hundreds of international acceptances with hundreds of different images in approximately 30 countries, including many International awards. Some of her images have been acquired for photographic art collections both in Australia and overseas. Whilst being successful in most sections, her strongest interest has been in photography of people, encompassing portraiture, social documentary and stage images. She has also enjoyed working with Creative imagery.

Bronwen does presentations and judges for Clubs, Nationals and International Exhibitions. In 2005 she was awarded a state service award, SSVAPS for her contribution to photography in Victoria. She spent four years on the organizing committee for the VIGEX International Photographic Salon, including 3 years as their Vice President. As a member of the Australian Photographic Society she has served as a Verifying Officer, since 2008, for Honors applicants and also served on the APS Honors Sub Committee for 4 years during which time she was the Coordinator of FIAP Distinctions.

A strong believer in photography as an art form Bronwen also values photography as an important means of capturing history, When she judges, Bronwen loves to see images that are unique with the makers own artistic interpretation and images that stimulate visually and mentally. Entry into the world of offshore international salons has been a tremendous source of inspiration and stimulation for Bronwen. She believes that exposure to a world of incredible images, touched by culture, location and world events, has broadened the way she approaches photography. It has pushed her to improve her photographic skills and it is a path upon which she has mentored many other photographers.

    BILL HENSON

DOB 7th October 1955, Melbourne

Bill is one of Australia's most notable leaders in Contemporary photography. Bill studied visual arts and design with Louis Athol Shmith (Australian, 1914–1990) at Prahran College of Advanced Education. Other notable influences on his work include the famous Melbourne painter and his long-term partner Louise Hearman (Australian, b.1963) and the award-winning film director Paul Cox (Australian, b.1940). Although Henson did not complete his degree, Shmith showed his work to the photography curator at the National Gallery of Victoria, which led to Henson’s first solo exhibit in 1975. Since his first exhibit, the artist has shown his work in Australia and many other countries around the world. Some of his most notable exhibit venues include the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Venice Biennale. Common themes that can be seen in Henson's work include Chiaroscuro (stark light to dark tonal contrasts), bokeh (blurry imagery), and a reflection of a strong sense of musicality.

As Edmund Capon (Australian b.1940), the art director of the Gallery of New South Wales, says: "Henson's images are carefully choreographed moments of suspenseful drama, veritable symphonies of decadence and beauty, of squalor and opulence, of mysterious darkness and ominous light, of quiet obsession and subversive ecstasy." One of Henson's most famous projects, known as the Paris Opera Project, was created in 1991 to give viewers a sense of listening to music. The project was produced in an attempt to generate images designed to show the feelings stirred by music.

In more recent times, Henson has shifted his focus to both urban and rural landscapes. His works portray a sort of Romanticism with dark and abandoned fringes of the city that often include lone figures tormented by longing and sadness. Henson's project entitled 3 Decades of Photography captures three decades of his work, and is meant to demonstrate that a series is never over, but is instead only a work in progress.

TIM NEWBERY AFIAP, AAPS, ESFIAP, HonEFIAP, HonFAPS

I have been interested in natural history since I was a small child in England.

My early involvement with natural history in Australia was spent in conjunction with the then Curator of insects at the South Australian Museum rearing and working out life histories of Australian lepidoptera. This research soon lead to the need to put together a photographic record of our rearing.

My first camera for this project was a Praktica and I remain indebted to John Mack Senior for starting me off on the right track. My current equipment is Nikon for 35mm and Hasselblad for a larger format work. As a photographer I have exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas and am called on frequently to judge and lecture on nature photography.

As a nature photographer I am vitally concerned with the safety of my subjects whether birds, plants, insects or animals. Wherever possible my subjects are photographed in their natural environment and completely unrestrained. For birds, insects and animals this often means spending a considerable time "in the bush" and having extreme patience.

I enjoy the use of black and white as there is a delicacy about good monochrome pictures that is not possible to achieve with color. However I always use color film as well as black and white when photographing. I will only use Kodak materials in particular Kodachrome for color because it is the film that results in the most accurate colors without the often extreme color saturation of the more modern films.

    ROGER SKINNER

DOB 7th June 1950, Ryde, NSW

Roger Skinner moved to Muswellbrook in 1976. He and his wife Lorraine and their sons Lachlan and Eliot, live on a small rural holding near the town, where he operates a photographic business and studio on a part-time basis.

Encouraged into photography by his father, Roger began making photographs in 1963, at the age of thirteen. He served his “apprenticeship” like so many others, in the laundry, making contact prints with a slide projector. He took a more serious interest in photography following the purchase of a Minolta SRT 101 in 1969, but he did not begin exhibiting until 1979.

His first taste of success was as a member of Muswellbrook and District Camera Club in that year, and then winning the Northern Photographic Federation 1979 Slide of the Year Competition.

Also in 1979 he met Frank Watters, the director of the Watters Gallery in Sydney and worked with him on a four month commission for the Australia Council – The Upper Hunter Environmental Exhibition. This exposed Roger to the work of leading Australian contemporary photographers such as John Delacour, Wally Barda, Wes Stacey and others. Their more personal work changed many of his attitudes to photography. He continued to enter National Photographic exhibitions with mixed success, but began to drift more towards art prizes as a forum.

His photograph based art works received critical acclaim from around 1987-88, when he was awarded a Highly Commended in the Muswellbrook Open Art Prize, First Prize and two Highly Commendeds in the Singleton Art Prize and First Prize in the Scone Art Prize, all within twelve months. The latter was purchased by Max Watters for inclusion in the Max Watters Collection recognized as one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary Australian art, outside the capital cities. Roger’s work has continued to be included in private and gallery collections including Muswellbrook Regional Gallery, Stanthorpe Regional Gallery, Maitland City Gallery, Manning Art Gallery, Tweed River Regional Art Gallery and the Queensland Art Gallery.

He now concentrates on exhibiting in galleries and selected competitive exhibitions. He has won First Prize twice in the McGregor Prize for Photography and also Second Prize in this competition.

He has also won First Prize in the Muswellbrook Photographic Award (1998) and is the inaugural winner (1999) of the Josephine Ulrick Photography Prize for Portraiture. These awards are recognized nationally as Australia’s most prestigious photographic prizes.

Roger has exhibited in group exhibitions at the Art Gallery of NSW, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Brisbane and the Centre For Contemporary Photography, Melbourne.

He has also staged three one-man shows: Diving Into Silence; The Dynamics of Process and Self Centred.

Awarded two FIAP Gold Medals (1992 – monochrome and color prints) and three Certificates of Merit (1991) from the International Salon of Creative Photography, Surrey, England, of which HRH The Duke of York is Patron.

He is also the recipient of two silver awards (1998, 2000) from the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. In 1997 he received Photographer of the Year in the Landscape Category from the Queensland Museum and the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland.

Roger’s work has been requested for publication in reference textbooks for Year 12 HSC art students. He has taught photography as a consultant at Muswellbrook High School, St. Joseph’s College, Aberdeen and Scone Grammar School.

Roger is in demand to share his expertise and knowledge of photography. He has been Guest Editor of PHOTOgraphy Magazine and has had articles and reviews published in Australian and international magazines.

He has lectured on his own work and contemporary photography, is a regular guest lecturer at camera clubs and has judged numerous competitions including the Sydney International Exhibition of Photography and the McGregor Prize for Photography.

1980 joined the Australian Photographic Society.

1988 - Executive Director of the Australian Photographic Society's Contemporary Group.

Roger is the founding Chairperson of the Australian Photographic Society's Contemporary Group.

PRINTWORKS is a dedicated group of amateur photographers based in Adelaide, South Australia. At the moment it consists of eleven members and although this number has varied in the past, the group remains small and entry is by invitation only.

The PRINTWORKS group was established in 1985 with co-founding members John Hodgson, Howard Speed, Deane Staples and Trevor Hill. The only original founder still remaining with the group is John Hodgson.

The group consists of some of the best photographers in this State and its function is primarily to promote Adelaide’s amateur photographers internationally and act as a vehicle for its members to enter international exhibitions mainly for the purpose of gaining international honors.

The reason for the small number of members is mainly due to ease of sending exhibition prints overseas. Often an exhibition also includes group discounts for entry fees. Initially only prints or slides were sent but with the digital age the group has branched out into this category as well. However, as most of the group wish to keep the print alive, most exhibitions inviting print entries are patronized.
